The Greek destination topped Italy’s Venice and the northern Dalmatian coast of Croatia

The Peloponnese has been named as the number one European destination of 2016 by travel guide publisher Lonely Planet.

On its website, the publisher writes: “Now more than ever the Peloponnese is the perfect destination for absorbing traditional Greek life, compelling history and inspiring landscapes.
“Travellers to Greece tend to flock to the myriad islands or marvel at the iconic Acropolis, but one of the country’s most diverse, vibrant regions is often forgotten: the Peloponnese.
“It remains an affordable enclave of magnificent ancient sights like Olympia, Mycenae and Mystras, which are scattered across a rich landscape of stone villages, teal seas and snow-capped mountains.”

The Top Ten experiences listed in the southern Greek region clearly conveyed why it topped the list, with experiences varying from visits to the seaside town of Nafplio, the shipwreck dive in Navarino Bay at Pylos, catching a show at the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus, to bird-watching at Gialova Lagoon, amongst others.

Following the Peloponnese in the Top 10 must see European destinations, were Aarhus in Denmark, followed by Italy’s Venice, the Dordogne in France, Lviv in Ukraine, England’s Warwickshire, Extremadura in Spain, the east coast of Tenerife, Textel in The Netherlands and Croatia’s northern Dalmatian coast.

HE IS just seven years old, has been missing for two days, and now his parents have admitted they left their son in the mountains of north Japan as ‘punishment’.

Yamato Tanooka has been lost in the Hokkaido mountains since Saturday, with his parents conceding yesterday he had not got lost as they hiked and foraged for vegetables as they first told police.

Now they have admitted they lied, and abandoned him in the area populated by brown bears to teach him a lesson. They left him alone for five minutes, and could not find him when they returned.

Hundreds of emergency service workers continue combing the area looking for Yamato.

His father told a TV Asahi reporter he did not dare admit the truth while requesting a search.

The parents walked about 500m away from their son before returning, TV Asahi reported.

Islamic State has started selling sex slaves on Facebook in a desperate attempt to raise much needed funds.

The cash-strapped terror group has had its income stream devastated by sustained bombing of its oil refineries and smuggling routes.

Now the group is looking for other, more barbaric ways of paying its fighters and funding its reign of terror.

“To all the bros thinking about buying a slave, this one is $11,000,” said a May 20 Facebook posting, attributed to a German Islamic State fighter who calls himself Abu Assad Almani.

Another woman being sold, also for $11,000, had been crying when her photo was taken.

“What makes her worth that price? Does she have an exceptional skill?” one IS sympathiser asked about the woman in the second photo.

“Nope,” Alamani replied. “Supply and demand makes her that price.”

Facebook reportedly shut down the account within hours, and is playing a cat-and-mouse game with jihadist accounts which are spouting propaganda and organising recruitment and calling for donations.

More than 700 sex slaves have been treated by UN doctors, after being liberated or escaping the group.

Islamic State’s territory has shrunk by 40 percent in Iraq and 20 percent in Syria since its 2014 peak.

Thousands of elite Iraqi troops are poised to assault one of the Islamic State group’s most emblematic bastions, Fallujah.

The week-old operation has so far focused on retaking villages and rural areas around the city, which lies 65km west of the capital Baghdad.

The jihadists were also under pressure from Kurdish fighters east of their northern Iraqi stronghold Mosul and from US-backed Kurdish-led fighters in Syria.

Panathinaikos beat AEK 3-0 in the Athens derby on Monday to return to the top of the play-off table, along with PAOK that saw off host Panionios 2-0.

The Greens scored their first win against any of the top-five teams in the league this season, and it was a very convincing performance over the recently crowned Cup winners.

Finnish midfielder Robin Lod opened the score for Panathinaikos at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium and Marcus Berg made it 2-0 before the half-hour mark, with AEK being tired from playing three games within just over six days. It therefore conceded a third to Viktor Klonaridis in injury time.

PAOK has taken seven points from three games after beating Panionios at Nea Smyrni on Monday.

Stefanos Athanasiadis scored first and Robert Mak added his goal for a rather comfortable victory for the Thessaloniki club. Panionios missed a late penalty and has practically lost all hope of making the top spot that leads to the Champions league qualifiers.

Panathinaikos and PAOK are now on seven points, AEK has five and Panionios one.

On Thursday there are the reverse fixtures as PAOK hosts Panionios and AEK greets Panathinaikos.

Ένα απίστευτο περιστατικό, που ανεβάζει τον πήχη σε αυτό που αποκαλούμε εξάρτηση από την πίτσα, σημειώθηκε στο Σίδνεϊ της Αυστραλίας.

Ο πρωταγωνιστής του βίντεο, που τραβήχτηκε στον αυτοκινητόδρομο Μ7, σέρνει πίσω από το όχημά του ένα τρέιλερ πάνω στο οποίο υπάρχει ένας φορητός φούρνος πίτσας. Ο φούρνος είναι αναμμένος και, προφανώς, ψήνει μια πίτσα καθ’ οδόν!

Η οδηγός οχήματος που βρισκόταν πίσω από τον «λάτρη της πίτσας» τράβηξε το βίντεο και το πόσταρε, σχολιάζοντας: «Αναρωτιέται κανείς αν αυτό είναι αρκετά ασφαλές. Μια φωτιά. Μέσα σε φούρνο για πίτσα. Στον αυτοκινητόδρομο. Μαζί με ένα αυτοκίνητο. Είναι ένα ερώτημα»…

Ένας γιγάντιος καρχαρίας προσκυνητής, το δεύτερο μεγαλύτερο είδους ψαριού στον κόσμο, πιάστηκε στα δίχτυα ψαράδων ανοιχτά της Λέσβου. Εντελώς ακίνδυνος, ο προσκυνητής ή σαπουνάς τρέφεται αποκλειστικά με πλαγκτόν.

Η αναπάντεχη ψαριά στη Λέσβο είχε μήκος 7 μέτρα, αν και το συγκεκριμένο είδος (Cetorhinus maximus – Κητόρινος ο μέγιστος) μπορεί σε σπάνιες περιπτώσεις να φτάσει τα 8 μέτρα.

O προσκυνητής ζει σε εύκρατα νερά σε όλο τον κόσμο και πιστεύεται ότι διαχειμάζει σε μεγάλο βάθος.

Μόνο ο φαλαινοκαρχαρίας (Rhincodon typus, είδος που επίσης υπάρχει στη Μεσόγειο) έχει μεγαλύτερο μέγεθος, με μέγιστο μήκος γύρω στα 14 μέτρα.

Και τα δύο γιγαντόσωμα είδη τρέφονται κρατώντας το στόμα ανοιχτό για να φιλτράρουν μικροοργανισμούς από το νερό.

Λόγω της υπεραλίευσης, και οι δύο γιγάντιοι καρχαρίες κατατάσσονται στα ευάλωτα είδη.

Ο προσκυνητής στη Λέσβο είναι ο δεύτερος που εντοπίζεται στα ελληνικά νερά το τελευταίο διάστημα, έπειτα από έναν προσκυνητή που βρέθηκε πριν από λίγες μέρες νεκρός στη Σύρο.

Στις ελληνικές θάλασσες υπάρχουν συνολικά 35 είδη καρχαρία, ανάμεσά τους και ένας λευκός καρχαρίας που εντοπίστηκε πριν από λίγα χρόνια ανάμεσα στη Ρόδο και το Καστελόριζο.

Αποκαλύφθηκε στα Χανιά, στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων για την 75η επέτειο της ιστορικής μάχης

Ένα ακόμα μνημείο αφιερωμένο στους Αυστραλούς και Νεοζηλανδούς, που, μαζί με τους κατοίκους του νησιού, πολέμησαν στη Μάχη της Κρήτης, αποκαλύφθηκε στα Χανιά, στο πλαίσιο των εκδηλώσεων για την 75η επέτειο της ιστορικής μάχης.

Το μνημείο, τοποθετήθηκε στη γνωστή στους ξένους ως 42nd Street, στην περιοχή Τσικαλαριά, και σε αυτό συμπεριλαμβάνεται η αναμνηστική πλάκα «42η οδός» που δωρίστηκε από την Αυστραλία στα Χανιά και δείχνει το σημείο όπου έλαβε χώρα η ιστορική μάχη μεταξύ των συμμάχων και των γερμανικών δυνάμεων στις 27η Μαΐου 1941, με τη συμμετοχή Αυστραλών και Νεοζηλανδών.

Η πλάκα αυτή, μήκους ενός μέτρου και βάρους 80 κιλών, φιλοτεχνήθηκε στην Αυστραλία από τον καλλιτέχνη Ρος Μπαστιάν, και απεικονίζει Αυστραλούς και Νεοζηλανδούς κατά τις τελευταίες μέρες της Μάχης της Κρήτης.

Στην τελετή των αποκαλυπτηρίων ήταν παρόντες ο γενικός κυβερνήτης της Νέας Ζηλανδίας, Τζέρι Mαταπαράε, ο πρέσβης του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου στην Ελλάδα, Τζον Κίττμερ, ο Αυστραλός πρέσβης, Τζον Γκρίφιν, με τις αντιπροσωπείες τους, μικρός αριθμός βετεράνων της Μάχης και πολλά μέλη οικογενειών βετεράνων που είχαν πολεμήσει στην Κρήτη.

«Με την παρουσία μας σήμερα εδώ η 42η οδός βρίσκει τη θέση, που της αξίζει στην πρόσφατη ιστορία» ανέφερε κατά την τελετή, μεταξύ άλλων, σε σύντομο χαιρετισμό του ο δήμαρχος Χανίων, Τάσος Βάμβουκας.

Στο σημείο όπου βρίσκεται το μνημείο, έχουν τοποθετηθεί και πληροφορικές πινακίδες που αναφέρονται στα γεγονότα εκείνης της περιόδου.

Giannou and Ikonomidis included in squad

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has announced a 23-man Socceroos squad for the two friendly matches against the Greek national team in early June.

Postecoglou has named 10 changes to the squad which will face England on 28 May, and he has been able to name a number of players unavailable to him for selection for the England game. The Dodoni series against Greece falls in the FIFA window for internationals, freeing up Socceroos playing in China and Japan from their club obligations.

Players coming into the squad include Tim Cahill, Apostolos Giannou, Matthew Leckie and Nathan Burns as well as defenders Trent Sainsbury and Matthew Spiranovic.

The coach says he expects the addition of these players to benefit the squad significantly. “It will be enormously beneficial, and I think also the fact that they’re playing until the final weekend. They’ll all be in good condition and they’ve all been playing regularly which is important.”

In keeping with past practice, the Socceroos boss has also brought in new players for a potential debut for the Socceroos. They include Jason Geria, Alex Gersbach, as well as keeper Mark Birighitti, called in for the injured Mark Langerak. These follow the four new faces named in the squad for the England friendly in Sunderland on 28 May – Mark Degenek, Brad Inman, Jamie McLaren and Stefan Mauk.

In total Postecoglou has named 32 players for the two squads, all in keeping with his plans to develop a deep pool of players. “I’m not going to a World Cup again sweating on guys being fit and not having options if they’re not. We’ve got to go into every camp, every game, knowing that if we’re missing one or two, we’ve got others to call on.

“The two Greece games, one being after the other, I’ll take an opportunity to get a look at most of the guys. It’s important in these friendly games we do that. But we’re putting out teams that we think will be able to play our football and give an opportunity to as many as possible.”

Panathinaikos host AEK at Leoforos Stadium

The Athenian derby between rivals Panathinaikos and AEK Athens takes centre stage in the Greek Super League play-offs tonight.

Recently crowned Greek Cup Winners AEK will travel the short distance to Ampelokipoi where they will take on PAO in round three of the play-off mini league.

AEK will seek seeking to maintain its lead at the top of the play-off table after it climbed to the summit on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Panionios, just three days after its cup 2-1 victory over Olympiakos at the same stadium.

AEK went ahead through captain Petros Mantalos goal when the Greek international scored in the 57th minute.

Before the game AEK paraded the Cup’s trophy to the thousands of AEK fans who rushed to cheer on the players for beating Olympiakos in Tuesday’s final behind closed doors.

AEK is now on five points, Panathinaikos and PAOK have four, and Panionios has one.

AEK visits Panathinaikos at 20:30 Greek time tonight, prior to that Panionios hosts PAOK.

«Θα έρθουν εδώ και θα μπουν στην ουρά για επιδόματα» δήλωσε

Η πλειονότητα όσων ζητούν άσυλο στην Αυστραλία, «δεν ξέρουν ούτε να διαβάζουν, ούτε να μετράνε, ούτε να γράφουν ούτε την ίδια τους τη γλώσσα»: Σχόλια που θα ήταν εμπρηστικά από τον καθένα, αλλά ακόμη περισσότερο όταν λέγονται από τον (υπηρεσιακό) υπουργό Μετανάστευσης.

Οι αναφορές του υπουργού έχουν βάλει φωτιά στο προεκλογικό σκηνικό της Αυστραλίας, η οποία έχει ήδη τηρήσει σκληρή στάση απέναντι στο μεταναστευτικό ρεύμα από χώρες της νοτιανατολικής Ασίας.

Οι αριθμοί προσφύγων και μεταναστών που φτάνουν στην Αυστραλία είναι ασύγκριτα χαμηλότεροι, όπως σημειώνει το Reuters, από εκείνους στην Ευρώπη και ο ΟΗΕ, έχει επικρίνει την αυστραλιανή πρακτική των «υπερπόντιων» κέντρων κράτησης.

Η θέση της συντηρητικής κυβέρνησης, ενόψει των εκλογών της 2ας Ιουλίου, είναι ότι η Αυστραλία πρέπει να πάρει επιπλέον 12.000 Σύρους πρόσφυγες, πέραν του ετήσιου «πλαφόν» των 13.750 ατόμων. Η αντιπολίτευση των Εργατικών ζητά διπλασιασμό του αριθμού σε 27.000 σε ορίζοντα δεκαετίας.

Ερωτηθείς γι’ αυτήν την πρόταση των Εργατικών, ο υπουργός Μετανάστευσης, Peter Dutton, είπε σε συνέντευξή του στο Sky: «Η μεγάλη πλειονότητά τους δεν ξέρουν ούτε να διαβάζουν ούτε να μετρούν ούτε να γράφουν στη γλώσσα, έστω και στη γλώσσα τους, και πολύ περισσότερο στα Αγγλικά» είπε.

«Οι περισσότεροι θα κατέληγαν στις ουρές των ανέργων για τα επιδόματα κοινωνικής ή υγειονομικής ασφάλισης» υποστήριξε, λέγοντας ότι «θα ήταν ένα τεράστιο κόστος, και δεν εξυπηρετεί σε τίποτε να εξωραΐζουμε την κατάσταση».

Τα σχόλια προκάλεσαν θυελλώδεις αντιδράσεις από την αντιπολίτευση. Οι Εργατικοί -οι οποίοι μεν προτείνουν σταδιακό διπλασιασμό σε όσους δίνει άσυλο η Αυστραλία, αλλά έχει υιοθετήσει προτάσεις για επαναπροώθηση σκαφών ανάλογες εκείνων που ήδη ακολουθεί η συντηρητική κυβέρνηση- κάλεσαν τον πρωθυπουργό Τέρνμπουλ «να καταδικάσει Turnbull» τις αναφορές του Dutton.

Ο ίδιος ο Malcolm Turnbull περιορίστηκε, στη συνέχεια, να πει, ότι η Αυστραλία είναι «μία από τις πιο επιτυχημένες πολυπολιτισμικές κοινωνίες, και αυτό επειδή έχουν επενδύσει χρήματα σε υπηρεσίες υποδοχής, στο να διασφαλίσουμε ότι πρόσφυγες που έρχονται στη χώρα μαθαίνουν τη γλώσσα και έχουν τα εφόδια να ενσωματωθούν και να εργαστούν».
