Police are carrying out aerial and land searches to find a yacht believed to have been carrying two men whose bodies washed up on a beach north of Newcastle yesterday.

A 77-year-old man from Smiths Gully, Victoria, and a 71-year-old from Duns Creek, New South Wales, left from Brooklyn for Port Stephens on Thursday afternoon.

Their bodies were found about 3:00pm on Friday in an isolated area on Birubi Beach.

Sergeant Ian Allwood said the search was being coordinated by the Marine Area Command.

“Today we are having a further search of the Stockton Bite area, particularly using land-based resources on Birubi [and] Stockton Beach and we’ll also use air resources to search the bite for the missing yacht and hopefully a debris trail,” he said.

“Today the conditions have moderated. It’s a really good visibility day and the seas have abated somewhat from what they were yesterday during the incident so we are hopeful of finding something.”

He said the men had been responsible with their navigation but something had obviously gone wrong.

“It’s certainly a tragedy, the fact is that our hearts go out to their families,” he said.

“They’ve tried their best to be responsible in their navigation plan and obviously something has happened and the circumstances around that will be investigated by the coroner.

“At some stage something has happened that’s caused them to be in a dinghy and off course.

“When we’ve recovered the two deceased we’ve also recovered the dinghy on Birubi beach.”

The New South Wales Government has announced a billion-dollar overhaul of the state’s sporting infrastructure, including plans to build new stadiums at Parramatta and Moore Park.

Premier Mike Baird said it was the biggest investment in sporting and major event infrastructure in NSW since the Sydney Olympics.

The first project in the package will be a new 30,0000-seat stadium at Parramatta in Sydney’s south, which would be completed by 2019.

The plan also includes a new rectangular stadium at Moore Park in Sydney’s east, seating between 50,000 and 55,000 people, a new indoor arena near the CBD, an outer-western Sydney sporting venue and the completion of the SCG upgrade.

The Government is looking to acquire the lease of Olympic Stadium to redevelop it, which could potentially include building a retractable roof.

It said $600 million had already been set aside for the package as part of Rebuilding NSW and it would allocate more funding in the future.

Mr Baird said the package was dependent on sporting codes agreeing to put on major matches in NSW and he wants the NRL grand final to remain in Sydney.

“The longer we can keep it here, the better, and the critical part of this process is to ensure — whether it be the NRL, whether it be the soccer, whether it be Rugby Union — this city will get the best events it can for the next generation,” he said.

Plan about putting NSW ‘back in the game’

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres said for too long, Sydney and NSW had “fallen behind the rest of the pack”.

“We are setting forward a pathway so that every sports fan can come to a stadium that suits their needs, that suits the sports they are passionate about,” he said.

“It’s time Sydney and NSW got back in the game.”

Parramatta Mayor Scott Lloyd welcomed the news, saying the existing Parramatta stadium, built in the 1980s, desperately needed to be replaced.

“For so long we’ve been waiting for a world-class stadium and we’ve got it now in Parramatta,” he said.

He said because of its location in the heart of Parramatta, the new Parramatta Stadium would be a huge drawcard for sports fans who want a complete night out.

“Parramatta is an ideal destination,” he said.

“We’re going to have light rail running straight past, if you want to walk out of the stadium you can be seated at a restaurant within 10 minutes.

“We’ve got great parking, great facilities, great public transport. What better place to have a world class stadium?”

David Borger, the western Sydney director of the Sydney Business Chamber, said it was great news.

“This investment by the Government will supercharge the economy of this area,” he said.

Wool shorn off an overgrown sheep found near Canberra on Wednesday has set an “unofficial” world record for the heaviest fleece removed in one shearing, the RSPCA says.

The sheep, dubbed Chris, underwent a risky shearing operation to remove 40.45 kilograms of wool.

It smashed the previous world record held by a sheep in New Zealand called Shrek, whose fleece weighed 27 kilograms.

Yesterday a national shearing champion took on the challenge to clip the sheep, which was rescued by RSPCA staff after being reported by a member of the public.

It was so woolly its life was at risk, as sheep can develop serious medical conditions if they are not regularly shorn.

Vets were worried the animal could die from shock during the shearing, so it was sedated during the process.

The RSPCA estimates the sheep, which could barely walk due to the mass of wool, had not been shorn in more than five years.

It took four-time Australian Shearing Championship winner Ian Elkins and four helpers 42 minutes to shear the sheep.

An average fleece that has not been shorn for 12 months weighs about 5 kilograms and takes three minutes to shear.

Mr Elkins said it was a difficult job.

“It was a challenge but the sheep was calm and the vets gave it a mild sedation before we started the shear,” he said.

“We started on the belly, just laid it on its back, kept it comfortable.

“There were parts of the sheep where we had to cut it in different layers because the problem for me shearing it was the weight of the fleece was pulling on the skin and we wanted to keep the skin cuts to a minimum.”

After shearing, the sheep weighed in at 44 kilograms.

With 35 years in the sheep shearing business, Mr Elkin said he had never seen anything like it.

“I’ve shorn a few sheep with two years’ worth of fleece unshorn, they would cut 10 or 12 kilos,” he said.

“Sheep are shorn every 12 months and an average weight would be 5 kilograms. For this to cut over 40 kilograms and smash the world record, Shrek the New Zealand sheep, he cut 27 kilograms, it’s unbelievable.”

One runaway Tasmanian sheep, known as Shaun, lived in the wild for six years and was found with fleece that weighed more than 20 kilograms.

 Mr Elkins believes the fleece will not be sold.

“Because of the length of it, it’s 42 centimetres long. It will have no commercial value but it will be interesting to see what the RSPCA do with it, whether they put it in a museum or something like that,” he said.

RSPCA ACT Chief Tammy Ven Dange said she was pleased with how smoothly the shearing process went.

“He’s a Merino sheep, and he needs to be sheared all the time, they’re bred for that specifically, so if you don’t do it this is what happens,” she said

“It’s actually a life or death situation… This animal would not have made it through the summer had we not done that, we were just lucky to find him when we did.”

She said the sheep was already feeling more comfortable in its own skin, and that the RSPCA would spend seven days trying to find its legal owner, before sending it to a new home.

“He’s a new man in many ways, he’s actually moving really well, he’s already eating, he actually came up to us for a cuddle.”

“If we can’t find the legal owner then we’ll put him up for adoption.”

Ο παπά Στρατής έχασε τη μάχη με τον καρκίνο

Ο παπά Στρατής, ο «Καλός Σαμαρείτης» της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ.
Σε ηλικία 57 ετών έχασε τη μάχη με τον καρκίνο ο παπά Στρατής, ο «Καλός Σαμαρείτης» όπως τον χαρακτήρισε η Ύπατη Αρμοστεία του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες, αφήνοντας όμως σπουδαία παρακαταθήκη αλληλεγγύης και ανιδιοτέλειας.

Στο νοσοκομείο Λαμίας διακομίσθη το απόγευμα της Τετάρτης ένας 22χρονος από την περιοχή του Δομοκού μετά από δάγκωμα οχιάς.

Σύμφωνα με το lamiareport.gr, ο νεαρός δαγκώθηκε από φίδι, την ώρα που εκτελούσε αγροτικές εργασίες, παρόλο που φορούσε γάντια.

Ο 22χρονος αρχικά νοσηλεύτηκε στην παθολογική, ωστόσο επειδή του χορηγήθηκε αντιοφικός ορός, ο οποίος μερικές φορές προκαλεί επιπλοκές, για καθαρά προληπτικούς λόγους, μεταφέρθηκε στη Μονάδα Εντατικής Θεραπείας.

Μένουν σε μια περιοχή του Γάγγη ποταμού και είναι 46 χρονών. Είναι γνωστές σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Όχι απλά επειδή είναι ενωμένες σιαμαίες, αλλά επειδή έχουν 2 κεφάλια, 4 χέρια και έναν κορμό. Έχουν 2 ξεχωριστές καρδιές, ένα κοινό στομάχι και κοινά νεφρά. Το κάτω μέρος του σώματος τους είναι κοινό με 2 πόδια. Ο κόσμος τις ξέρει σαν spider sisters, αδελφές- αράχνη. Τα ονόματα τους όμως είναι Ganga και Jamuna Mondal.

Μέχρι στιγμής στη ζωή τους η λέξη έρωτας δεν υπήρχε στο λεξιλόγιο τους. Ποιος θα μπορούσε να ερωτευτεί αυτές τις δυο γυναίκες. Και όμως η τύχη παίζει περίεργα παιχνίδια. Οι ίδιες μεγάλωσαν μόνες τους αφού οι γονείς τους τις εγκατέλειψαν όταν ήταν νήπια, επειδή θεωρούσαν ότι ήταν κατάρα από το θεό τους.

Ο έρωτας λοιπόν είναι τυφλός και χτύπησε με τα βέλη του τις 2 αδερφές. Τον βρήκαν στο πρόσωπο ενός νέου του Jasimuddin Ahmad. Πλέον μένουν όλοι μαζί και δηλώνουν και οι 3 σφοδρά ερωτευμένοι. Ο Ahmad, δουλεύει και όταν γυρνάει στο σπίτι οι 2 αδερφές τον προσέχουν και τον ξεκουράζουν.

«Όταν πρωτοείδα τον Jasimuddin, κατάλαβα ότι είναι ο άνδρας που θέλω να μοιραστώ τη ζωή μου» θα μιλήσει η μια εξ ονόματος και της άλλης σιαμαία, αδελφή και η άλλη συμπληρώνει: «νιώθουμε γεμάτες. Μας γεμίζει με την αγάπη του και εκείνος.»

Ο ίδιος ο Jasimuddin Ahmad θα πει: «Τις αγαπώ και τις 2 και προσπαθώ να τους δώσω όση αγάπη και φροντίδα μπορώ.»

Χάνονται στο τίποτα, στην άβυσσο που υπήρχε πριν γεννηθεί, ή περνούν σε μια διαφορετική και άυλη διάσταση, κάπου που μπορούν να βλέπουν και να μην επεμβαίνουν;

Η φωτογραφία του νεκρού παιδιού, έχει προκαλέσει παγκόσμια κατακραυγή για το ρόλο των ισχυρών κρατών, στις πολεμικές συγκρούσεις, που δημιουργούν τις προσφυγικές ροές.

Μπορεί μια εικόνα να μας ξυπνήσει; Ο 3χρονος Aylan Kurdi έχασε τη ζωή του προσπαθώντας με άλλους πρόσφυγες να περάσει με δυο βαρκάκια από την Τουρκία στην Ελλάδα. Η Ευρώπη συνεχίζει να στέκεται άβουλη και αμήχανη απέναντι στο δράμα των προσφύγων.

Την αθλιότητα της Δύσης, που προκαλεί πολέμους και μετά “ενοχλείται” από τις προσφυγικές ροές, αλλά και την ανεπάρκεια των ηγετών της, που διαβουλεύονται μήνες χωρίς να δίνουν λύσεις, καταδεικνύουν οι συγκλονιστικές φωτογραφίες του νεκρού αγοριού, η σορός του οποίου εντοπίστηκε στις ακτές της Τουρκίας.

Η βάρκα που το μετέφερε μαζί με άλλους 23 μετανάστες προς την Κω, βούλιαξε, το παιδί πνίγηκε και η σορός του ξεβράστηκε σε τουριστικό θέρετρο. Το εντόπισαν με το πρόσωπο κάτω σε μια παραλία στο θέρετρο της Bodrum. Οι μετανάστες είχαν επιβιβαστεί, σε δύο μικρές βάρκες και ξεκίνησαν από το Bodrum με στόχο να φτάσουν στην Ελλάδα.

Σύμφωνα με τις τουρκικές αρχές, το παιδί ήταν ο 3χρονος Σύρος πρόσφυγας Aylan Kurdi, ο οποίος πνίγηκε μαζί με τον 5χρονο αδερφό του και τη μητέρα τους. Ο πατέρας κατάφερε να επιβιώσει. Συνολικά έχασαν τη ζωή τους 5 παιδιά και μια γυναίκα. Άλλοι επτά άνθρωποι σώθηκαν από σκάφη του Λιμενικού ενώ δύο έφτασαν κολυμπώντας στην ακτή, καθώς φορούσαν σωσίβια.

Το περιστατικό στη Bodrum, δεν είναι το πρώτο, ούτε το τελευταίο. Καθημερινά εκατοντάδες πρόσφυγες επιχειρούν να φτάσουν στην Ελλάδα και από εκεί να κατευθυνθούν προς άλλες χώρες της Γερμανίας. Μόνο την περασμένη εβδομάδα υπολογίζεται ότι 23.000 άνθρωποι έφτασαν στην Ελλάδα, ενώ τους πρώτους 9 μήνες του 2015 έχουν περάσει τα ελληνικά σύνορα πάνω από 150.000.

Η μακρά πορεία αυτών των ανθρώπων, είναι γεμάτη εμπόδια, όπως αυτά που πρόσφατα έβαλε η Ουγγαρία με τους φράκτες και την απαγόρευση να περάσουν από τα εδάφη της με προορισμό τη Γερμανία. Την ίδια στιγμή η Ευρώπη για άλλη μια φορά, δείχνει αμήχανη και περιμένει χωρίς να λαμβάνει αποφάσεις, αυξάνοντας τις πιθανότητες να δούμε και στο μέλλον τέτοιες εικόνες.

“Είναι ξεκάθαρο πως την τρέχουσα προσφυγική κρίση στην Ευρώπη δεν μπορεί καμία χώρα να την επιλύσει από μόνη της. Όλες οι ευρωπαϊκές χώρες και η ΕΕ πρέπει να δράσουν μαζί και να βοηθήσουν εκείνες τις χώρες, οι δυνατότητες των οποίων έχουν φτάσει ήδη στα όρια τους όπως η Ελλάδα, η ΠΓΔΜ και η Σερβία”, δήλωσε ο Φεντερίκο Φόσι, εκπρόσωπος της Ύπατης Αρμοστείας του ΟΗΕ για τους Πρόσφυγες.

“Η σημερινή κατάσταση δείχνει πως πολύ συχνά οι πρόσφυγες περιγράφονται ως ένα φορτίο για πολιτικούς σκοπούς. Λαϊκιστές πολιτικοί εμφανίζονται ο καθένας τους κάθε μέρα στις τηλεοράσεις. Η δημοσιογραφική κάλυψη πρέπει να είναι υπεύθυνη και να επιτρέπει στους ανθρώπους να σχηματίζουν τη δική τους άποψη στη βάση μιας δίκαιης και ισορροπημένης ενημέρωσης”, πρόσθεσε απευθυνόμενος σε όσους βάζουν το πολιτικό κέρδος ή το πολιτικό κόστος πάνω από την ανθρώπινη ζωή.

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι η συγκεκριμένη φωτογραφία διαλύει κάθε επιχείρημα, των λαϊκιστών και των ακροδεξιών, που έχουν εύκολες τις λύσεις του “κλεισίματος των συνόρων” και των μέτρων “μηδενικής ανοχής” απέναντι στους απελπισμένους.

Και για να θυμηθούμε και τους εγχώριους οπαδούς της απανθρωπιάς και της ηλιθιότητας, αξίζει να αναρωτηθούμε αν αυτό το παιδάκι που εντοπίστηκε νεκρό στις ακτές της Τουρκίας, είναι “λαθραίος” και “επικίνδυνος τρομοκράτης” ή αν “θα το παίρναμε σπίτι μας”;

Ο ομοσπονδιακός βουλευτής Barton, Νίκος Βαρβαρής

Πάνω από $12 εκατ. θα μοιραστούν οι δήμοι

Ο ομοσπονδιακός βουλευτής Barton, κ. Νίκος Βαρβαρής, ανακοίνωσε ότι οι Δήμοι της εκλογικής του περιοχής, θα λάβουν τα επόμενα δύο χρόνια σημαντικές επιδοτήσεις για διάφορα προγράμματα.

Όπως ανακοίνωσε, η ομοσπονδιακή κυβέρνηση διαθέτει πάνω από $2,3 δις για τους Δήμους της χώρας, μέσω των Επιδοτήσεων Οικονομικής Αρωγής (FAG) και οι Δήμοι της έδρας Barton θα λάβουν πάνω από $12 εκατ. κατά το τρέχον οικονομικό έτος.

Αναλυτικά, ο Δήμος Hurstville θα λάβει $2.352.873, ο Δήμος Kogarah $1.674.175, ο Δήμος Rockdale $2.969.082 και ο Δήμος Canterbury $5.064.559.

«Η κυβέρνηση του Συνασπισμού έχει δεσμευτεί για βοήθεια στους Δήμους, προκειμένου να παρέχουν τις υπηρεσίες που χρειάζεται» είπε ο κ. Βαρβαρής και διευκρίνισε ότι οι Δήμοι μπορούν να διαθέσουν τις επιδοτήσεις αυτές χωρίς περιορισμούς, ανάλογα με τις ανάγκες τους σε τοπικό επίπεδο, που μπορεί να είναι υποδομή, ψυχαγωγία, περιβάλλον, προσλήψεις ή οδικά έργα.

Ο κ. Βαρβαρής πρόσθεσε ότι οι Δήμοι μπορούν, επίσης, να ωφεληθούν από άλλα ειδικά προγράμματα, όπως το Roads to Recovery ύψους $3,2 Δις, Bridges Renewal Program $300 εκατ., Heavy Vehicle Safety Program, $200 εκατ., και το Black Spot Program, $200 εκατ., προγράμματα ειδικά σχεδιασμένα για μείωση των συγκρούσεων στους αυστραλιανούς δρόμους.

Ο κ. Βαρβαρής δήλωσε ότι θα διατεθούν πάνω από $100 εκατ. με το Bridges Renewal Program για επισκευές και ανανέωση γεφυρών στους Δήμους της χώρας, υλοποιώντας την δέσμευση της ομοσπονδιακής κυβέρνησης Συνασπισμού για έργα υποδομής και υπηρεσίες μέσω των Δήμων.
