Gough Whitlam dismissal recreated on Twitter by Museum of Australian Democracy

images74XI6RNM

The Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) in Canberra is using Twitter to mark the 40th anniversary of the 1975 dismissal of the Whitlam government.

From today, MoAD, based at Old Parliament House, is “live tweeting” the events of the dismissal, through the voices of participants like then prime minister Gough Whitlam, caretaker prime minister Malcolm Fraser, and governor-general Sir John Kerr.

The Twitter campaign, using the hashtag #Dismissal1975, will run until November 11 – following the timeline of the historic time in Australia’s political history.

MoAD senior historian Libby Stewart said the campaign would bring to life the intrigue and the drama of the dismissal, while also helping highlight the changes in the way Australians now engage with democracy.

“For many people it is hard to imagine a time when information was not so readily available to everyone across the country,” Ms Stewart said.

“If the Whitlam Government had access to a 24-hour news cycle and social media channels like Twitter, the chain of events that led to the dismissal might have gone a very differently.”

Writer Paul Daley was in charge of collating the information into tweets of 140 characters or less.

“The dismissal of the Whitlam government was a historic moment in Australia’s political history and one of a few rare moments in world-wide political history where a head of state has used the powers arguably granted by that position to act independently of advice of the government,” Mr Daley said.

“Faced with a vast body of research-books, media, transcripts of speeches, personal recollections and the official documents – this became a wonderful, confronting and challenging project.

“It was certainly a journey of discovery that brought me a new perception of and intrigue with events of almost half a century ago.”

#Dismissal1975 will also share and feature some of the iconic documents, film and photos from the dismissal, including the letter of dismissal signed by the then governor-general, now housed at the National Archives.

MoAD director Daryl Karp said the campaign was about getting Australians to engage with politics in a different way by using channels they use every day, particularly a younger generation.

“Museums around the world are changing the way that they help their audiences interact with their exhibitions,” Mr Karp said.

“At the museum, digital technology is part of our toolkit to enrich users’ experiences and create collaborative communities that engage in lively conversations.”

MH17 victim’s father not expecting answers as Dutch authorities prepare to deliver final report

5627416-3x2-340x227

Dutch authorities will unveil a partial reconstruction of the Malaysia Airlines jet that crashed over Ukraine as they deliver their final report at a media briefing in The Netherlands.

They are expected to confirm it was brought down by a Russian-made Buk surface-to-air missile.

On Tuesday morning in The Netherlands, Thomas Schansman will get in his car and drive an hour south bracing himself to hear more details about his son’s death.

He has spent much of the past 15 months trying to block the heartache of that day in July last year but the release of the Dutch Safety Board’s final report is an important step.

“It’s the first time the families will all be together to be told formally what brought down the plane,” Mr Schansman told the ABC.

“We all know it was a Buk missile but to hear them tell us that in a formal setting is important.”

MH17 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when the Boeing 777 crashed over eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed rebels were fighting Ukrainian forces.

The Dutch lost 193 citizens. There were 38 Australians onboard.

The Dutch Safety Board’s chairman Tjibbe Joustra will speak with the families, show them pictures, take questions and provide them with copies of the report.

They will then stay in The Hague and watch a live broadcast of the media conference at the Gilze-Rijen air base.

Australian families will not get a similar briefing and the Australian Government will not get a copy of the report before it is published.

The Ambassador to The Netherlands, former Senator Brett Mason, will be at the media briefing.

Mr Joustra has already said there will be no time for questions or separate interviews.

But the media will be given access to a reconstruction of the jet that has been completed using wreckage salvaged from the crash site.

Families will be able to visit the airbase in the days following to also see it.

Mr Schansman does not have great expectations that he will learn anything new in the report.

“I do expect the safety board will say something about the responsibility of the air traffic control systems or also the responsibility of the different countries involved like Ukraine,” he said.

What he really wants is an apology for what he firmly believes was an accident.

“If we are able to find the people who are responsible for it and if they are willing to say, ‘Guys, we never intended to shoot down this aircraft’, that is what I’d like to hear — that it was an accident, that it was never their intention,” Mr Schansman said.

“But, I have not heard from Russia, I’ve not heard from anybody in this regard.”

Missile maker says it will unveil ‘real reason’ for crash

The most widely-credited explanation for the crash was that a Russian-built Buk missile was in the hands of rebels and was fired by mistake at the civilian jet.

But there were other theories including Russian suggestions the Ukrainians brought it down with an air-to-air missile.

Mr Schansman called them “crazy stories”.

“I find them unbelievable and when I read them I skip them over as soon as I see these kind of stories,” he said.

There is still a criminal inquiry underway but Mr Schansman doubts anyone will ever be charged or found responsible for operating the missile launcher.

That report is not due until the middle of next year.

And in another twist, the Russian maker of Buk missiles said it would also hold a briefing on Tuesday to unveil the “real reason” for the disaster.

It was previously said the Buk model in question was last produced in Russia in 1999 and was used by the Ukrainian military.

Court told of violent reaction to blue scissor pills

untitled

IT reads like a confronting anti-ice advertisement. A man is taken to hospital suffering from the effects of illicit drugs, but out of nowhere he snaps, attacking staff and security guards.
As he struggles, it takes half a dozen people to pin him down and sedate him. But the drug isn’t ice.

It’s a dangerous, synthetic, LSD-type substance referred to by police as 25I-NBOMe and known on the street as ‘‘Blue Scissors’’.

The drug – also commonly referred to as ‘‘Tripstasy’’ because it has the effects of ecstasy and LSD – gets its name from the insignia stamped across the blue pill.

And it is believed to be similar to another psychadelic and potentially psychotic drug from the NBOMe series, 25c-NBOMe, also known as ‘‘Blue Batman’’, which was blamed for several deaths and dozens of hospitalisations before it surfaced in the Hunter 12 months ago.

Police say ‘‘Blue Scissors’’ arrived in the Hunter earlier this year.

The drugs potential affects were outlined in Newcastle Local Court on Monday when Beau Adam Powell, 26, of Wallsend, was sentenced for a random and frenzied attack on a hospital security guard.
Powell told police he couldn’t remember anything after snorting half a pill of ‘‘Blue Scissors’’ in May this year.

He was taken to John Hunter Hospital and was being brought in on a stretcher when he suddenly leapt over the rail and sprinted towards a few security guards.

See your ad here
He swung a number of punches at one guard, hitting him in the head twice and had to be tackled to the ground.

Once on his stomach, doctors and hospital wardsmen piled on top of him in an attempt to grab his hands. As he tried to struggled free and spit at those on top of him he was sedated.

The Newcastle Herald reported on Saturday that a 22-year-old man with no criminal record was facing a maximum sentence of life behind bars after he was allegedly caught supplying more than 30 times the large commercial quantity of ‘‘Blue Scissors’’.

The man allegedly told police he thought the light blue tablets he was selling where ‘‘pingers’’, a street name for ecstasy or MDMA.

The commander of the state’s drug squad, Detective Superintendent Tony Cooke, said ‘‘intelligent people’’ were taking their lives into their own hands by taking the drugs.

‘‘The logo and the colour of the pill is not some type of trademark or a sign that quality assurance is guaranteed,’’ Detective Superintendent Cooke said.

‘‘These are being made by crooks who are in it for the dollar only, they have no care for the users.

‘‘These are intelligent people taking these drugs, if they can’t work out that these drugs are harmful to them then who can.’’

The head of Newcastle City drug unit, Detective Sergeant Scott Wheeler, said the blue scissors drug seemed to have appeared in the Hunter a few months ago.

‘‘It is a simple message, people can never be confident of what they are taking,’’ Detective Sergeant Wheeler said.

‘‘These substances are being made by people who have no regard for the users.’’

With no memory of the assault, Powell had nothing to say on his behalf on Monday, telling Magistrate Les Brennan he was at the ‘‘mercy of the court’’.

Magistrate Brennan told the court he had recently read about the dangers of the psychotic drug.

‘‘What if you’d killed one of these blokes?,’’ Mr Brennan said.

‘‘You would have no memory of it.

‘‘You know better than I do about the ice epidemic in this state.

‘‘This is not ice but it fits the same category. ‘‘The way you reacted, the way the hospital staff had to react, indicates you were pretty violent that day.’’

Powell was sentenced to an eight-month suspended jail term to be served by way of a good behaviour bond. Court documents state Powell and another man crushed up one of the blue pills and snorted half each at home about 11am on May 4 this year.

Both men had a bad reaction to the drug and decided to call an ambulance, court documents state. Paramedics spoke to Powell and the other man and decided to take them to hospital. But on the way Powell began acting aggressively.

Paramedics called ahead for security and Powell was placed on a stretcher when he arrived at John Hunter Hospital. Court documents state Powell began ‘‘tossing and turning and striking the bed with a closed first’’. He started to yell and swear and when the other man tried to calm him down he replied: ‘‘How the f – – – can I do that? F – – – you.’’ Then Powell suddenly put one hand down on the stretcher and vaulted over the rail. He sprinted towards a few security guards with his hands raised near his head in a fist, court documents state.

He swung his right arm with a closed fist towards the victim, who managed to move his left arm and block the punch.

Powell then punched the victim twice in the face, one punch connecting with his temple and one with his cheek, court documents state.

Powell had to be pinned to the ground by security guards before several doctors and hospital wardsmen came to their assistance and tried to grab Powell’s hands. Powell tried to spit at the wardsmen and staff had to place a mask over his face and sedate him.

When he was interviewed by police, Powell said he took the drug ‘‘Blue Scissors’’ and couldn’t remember anything after that. Police said he was cooperative and genuinely remorseful about the entire incident.

$20m for Rutherford Technology High

untitled

RUTHERFORD Technology High School is poised to become a national leader in high-tech education with almost $20 million being spent on state-of-the-art classrooms, administration buildings and outdoor areas.

A massive construction program started at the Avery Street school in October last year and is expected to be completed early next year.

Unprecedented growth in Maitland’s western suburbs and a school population of 1050 students were the catalysts for the state government committing to the multi-million project.

Principal Michael Whiting said the construction works means students now and in the future will have top quality resources particularly in practical areas like science, industrial arts, performing arts and special education.

Construction started late last year with a canopy built over three court areas at the rear of the school hall.

Mr Whiting said the canopy was unusual in that it has no structural beams going across it. It is believed to be a first in NSW.

“This now means we have three all-weather courts and an area to use for sporting activities and assemblies,” Mr Whiting said.

The school’s car park has been increased from 29 to 112 car parking spaces in phase one of the construction project.

Phase one also included an upgrade of the school’s administration block, a new COLA (covered outdoor learning area) and landscaping at the front of the school.

Mr Whiting said phase two will include the upgrade of six science labs to state of the art labs, the installation of a commercial kitchen and bistro and a refurbished home economic area.

There will also be a new performing arts area and a two-storey block comprising 19 general classrooms plus five special education classrooms are being built on the western end of the school.

The school’s quadrangle area and main playground area are also being upgraded and a new canopy is being constructed over the industrial arts area to form an outdoor construction area.

The Maitland Tutorial Centre has been relocated from South Street Telarah to the school on its Weblands Street side.

“The works have come about because this is such a huge growth area and the projected growth figures are very high,” Mr Whiting said.

“Figures show this area will continue to grow and we are getting the school ready for that anticipated growth plus providing the extra resources we need to run the VET (vocational education and training) courses we want to run,” he said.

“The resources we have will be great and this is a big win for the community, for Maitland and for the kids who will be coming to this school in the future,” Mr Whiting said.

The construction contract to upgrade Rutherford High School was awarded to Richard Crookes Construction in October 2014.

Billionaire Con Makris heads the field in BRW Rich 200

Seven Australians of Greek descent feature in the BRW 200 Rich List published this week, the annual inventory of Australia’s two hundred wealthiest individuals and families.

Leading the charge is veteran South Australian property developer Con Makris and family, ranked at 47, with an estimated worth of $1.03bn, up from $940m in 2014.

Former barrister and founder of Jubilee Mines, Perth’s Kerry Harmanis, is Australia’s second wealthiest Greek, coming in at 83 with $617m, up $7m from last year.

Sydney car king Nick Politis, owner of WFM Motors and chairman of Sydney’s Roosters NRL club, is valued at $594m; a cool $184m increase on his 2014 standing.

Fellow Sydneysider Theo Karedis comes in at 91. The principal of Arkadia Property Services, who made a fortune in the liquor sector and diversified into property, saw his stock rise from $500m a year ago to $559m this year.

Meanwhile, Melbourne’s own Harry Stamoulis fared more modestly over the same period, with his 2014 estimated wealth of $540m increasing by just $1m. Mr Stamoulis, whose new mansion in Toorak said to be worth $60m is nearing completion, drops from his previous number 86 position on the Rich List to 95.

Victorian Spiros Alysandratos, chief executive of Consolidated Travel Services is estimated to have seen his net worth grow to $332m in 2015. Mr Alysandratos, who is ranked 174, down from his 163 ($320m) ranking last year, was reportedly inspired to start his wholesale air ticketing services in the 1960s after having trouble booking a flight to Europe.

Geneva-based George Koukis, who migrated from Greece to Australia in 1971, is in 175th spot. Mr Koukis’ wealth – estimated at $332m – is derived from his banking software company Temenos, a business which he bought for less than $1 million in 1993.

Named in the BRW Rich Families List, the Paspaley family ranked no. 15 with $891 million.

HSC 2015: 70,000 students sit first HSC exam as test goes global

1444636940414

High school students from Belmore to Baghdad began their HSC exams on Monday, with the largest cohort in history taking on the first English exam.

At 10:30 am 70,000 students, in 13 locations around the world, put pen to paper, ready to dump as much knowledge onto the page as they could cram into their heads.

Sweaty palms grew sweatier as the stifling heat forced the doors of Wyndham College in Sydney’s west to be opened.

Inside the school hall a sick bucket maintained a vigil as students toiled with Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Nerves would span the globe for this year’s exams, with several hundred students sitting the tests overseas.

More than 13,000 kilometres from Wyndham College, a consular official minded an expatriate teen writing in Baghdad, while in Barcelona, as in the Sydney CBD, students battled to get creative with the idea of, “discovery”, the first time the theme has been used for the HSC English exam.

This years essay asked students to look at the process of discovery through “uncovering what is hidden and reconsidering what is known”.

While the theme may have changed, tactics have not.

Students at Wyndham prepared by memorising responses and then moulding them to questions.

“Teachers lie when they say you can’t memorise an English essay,” said 17-year-old Tanya Arora. “Believe me, you can.”

The Wyndham College student said like many of her classmates that she was confident about the test and was feeling “one step closer to freedom”.

Harrison Bleakley, 17, said his nerves had faded once he realised he was going to be able to adapt his pre-prepared responses to the questions.

“A lot of the hype around the HSC itself gets you a bit nervous, but once I got in there and saw the questions I forgot about it,” he said.

On first glance, teachers were happy with the first exam of the HSC season too. The questions were suitably vague for a first-year theme, they said.

“All in all it was a really fair paper,” said a former HSC marker and senior teacher at Wyndham, who cannot be named because he is not an authorised spokesman for the department.

The international push to this year’s HSC comes as up to 15 NSW private schools offer the International Baccalaureate as an alternative to the HSC.

But the President of the Board of Studies, Tom Alegounarias, denied there was any threat to the dominance of the state’s 48-year-old testing system.

“To be frank, the International Baccalaureate is a couple of hundred students. There are different horses for different courses. We are 75,000 students, it really isn’t a question of comparison.”

He added that the great challenge for the HSC’s future was that it meets the demands of an increasingly global student base.

“Australia and Sydney in particular are international places. It has to be an international credential.”

“It’s very important that those universities, Harvard and Oxford, regard [the HSC], and we are pleased to say that they do.”

The HSC exams continue on Tuesday with paper two of the English exam.
