Την καθαίρεση του ιερέα που προκάλεσε σκάνδαλο στην Ελληνορθόδοξη Εκκλησία των ΗΠΑ με τα φετιχιστικά όργια στα οποία επιδιδόταν με την παντρεμένη ερωμένη του ζητεί από το Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο η Αρχιεπισκοπή Αμερικής.

Κατά την Ιερά Επαρχιακή Σύνοδο της Ιεράς Αρχιεπισκοπής Αμερικής, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη υπό τον Αρχιεπίσκοπο Αμερικής Δημήτριο στις 13 και τις 14 Οκτωβρίου, αποφασίστηκε μεταξύ άλλων το «ξύρισμα» του ιερέα Γεωργίου Πασσιά, ο οποίος έχει ήδη παραιτηθεί από την ενορία του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα στη Νέα Υόρκη όπου ιερουργούσε από το 2006.

«Η Ιερά Σύνοδος συνεζήτησε επίσης καί θέματα πειθαρχικής φύσεως κληρικών, καί συγκεκριμένως μεταξύ άλλων καί τήν περίπτωσιν του π. Γεωργίου Πασσιά, διά τόν οποίον καί απεφάσισεν ομοφώνως νά εισηγηθεί τήν καθαίρεσιν αυτοού εις τήν αρμοδίαν αρχήν του Οικουμενικοού Πατριαρχείου» αναφέρει χαρακτηριστικά το ανακοινωθέν που εξέδωσε η Σύνοδος.

Ο 67χρονος ιερέας, που είναι πατέρας τεσσάρων παιδιών, έχει εξαφανιστεί μετά το ξέσπασμα του σκανδάλου, παρακαλώντας μάλιστα με ανακοίνωσή του που φρόντισε να διανεμηθεί στο ποίμνιό του να μην τον αναζητήσει κανείς γιατί θα φροντίσει να αφοσιωθεί «στη μετάνοια». Αντιθέτως, η ερωμένη του Έθελ Μπουζάλας, την οποία εμφάνιζε ως βαφτισιμιά του, με e-mails που στέλνει στους ανωτέρους του ιερέα ξεδιπλώνει με όλες τις λεπτομέρειες την σκανδαλώδη πολυετή σχέση τους, κατά την οποία όπως υποστηρίζει είχε μείνει και έγκυος.

Η παράνομη σχέση απασχόλησε έντονα τον ομογενειακό Τύπο, αλλά και την εφημερίδα «New York Post» στις αρχές του μήνα, όταν διέρρευσε το οπτικοακουστικό υλικό που έστειλε στην Αρχιεπισκοπή ο ομογενής εν διαστάσει σύζυγος της 45χρονης Περουβιανής καλλονής, στο οποίο ο ιερέας φαινόταν, μεταξύ άλλων, να παρακολουθεί σε σεξουαλική έξαψη την ερωμένη του να διαλύει κεκάκια με τα οπίσθιά της.

Hobart Hellenes offer advice to Middle Eastern newcomers.

With Australia about to take the highest number of refugees since the early days of mass migration from southern Europe, two elderly Greek Australians in Tasmania this week reflected on their own experiences and offered advice to the latest wave of migrants.

Responding to the crisis in Syria which has left over seven million people homeless, in his last days as prime minister Tony Abbott announced an additional 12,000 refugees fleeing the Middle East will be able to call Australia home.

The policy shift will see the total number of migrants under Australia’s refugee and humanitarian programs rise to 25,750 in a single year. Tasmania has committed to doubling its usual annual intake of refugees this year to about 1,000. Victoria will take four times that number and NSW is scheduled to receive about 7,000.

As the nation reflects on the imminent arrival of the refugees, the ABC sought the advice of a previous generation who migrated Down Under in the years immediately after World War II.

With just a few shillings in his pocket when he arrived in Melbourne in March 1950, Nick Anagnostis left his family in Lesvos in search of a new life in the southern hemisphere.

“I was 15 years of age, I came on my own, without knowing anyone, and without knowing the language,” he told the ABC.

“I wasn’t feeling well at all, I was in tears sometimes, because I was really, really on my own.”

His first job was in a family friend’s milk bar in Sydney. At 17 he bought his first business, a restaurant in Port Stephens. Soon after he sold up and moved to Tasmania where he bought a second restaurant which he owned until the mid-sixties.

In Hobart, where he later ran a successful corner store, he met his wife Helen, and three children and 10 grandchildren followed.

Nick says he feels for those displaced by the Syrian conflict, thousands of whom have sought refuge in his ancestral island on their journey to western Europe.

“The island I come from is very close to Turkey, and every day there are hundreds and hundreds arriving there,” he said.

“We should help those people. They should leave their problems behind and start a new life. Forget where they came from because this is paradise, in every way. If there is paradise then this is where we’re living,” says Nick, who adds that Australia’s island state has only one down side. “The only thing in Tasmania is, we’ve got beautiful beaches and the water’s a bit too cold.”

Fellow Tasmanian John Anagnostoru came to Australia in 1951 when he was 26 with a young wife and child.

John left Greece because of the inability to find work in the country shattered by civil war. After working for NSW Railways at Sydney’s Central Station for a number of years, he moved his family to Tasmania to escape the racism and discrimination they experienced in the NSW capital.

“We were known as ‘new Australians’,” he says. “Very unfriendly, people were. I mean, you’d go in a street for instance and ask someone for directions and they wouldn’t stop to talk to you.”

John says Tasmanians were much friendlier and the family decided to stay. He went on to work for the Post Master General, now Telstra, for 35 years.

He and his wife were blessed with two children and now have three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

John’s advice to newly-arrived refugees is to take any job that’s on offer.

“Try to assimilate with the Australian people, and abide by the laws of the country,” he said.

“People should not be in their own corner, they should mix with the local people.”

Federal MPs unite on Marbles reunification

Australian Opposition Leader Bill Shorten joined more than 60 MPs, dignitaries, and leaders of the NSW and ACT Hellenic communities on Wednesday at the launch of the Parliamentary Friends of the Parthenon group.

The group, established to encourage the Australian Government to back international efforts for the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, was convened by Victorian MP Maria Vamvakinou, with the Greens’ Adam Bandt and Nick Xenophon as co-convenors.

To rapturous applause, Mr Shorten began his speech by saying that after 200 years it was “time for the marbles to go home” and that Australia, with its “long and healthy links to both Greece and Britain” was ideally placed to lend its voice to the campaign.

“From Lord Elgin, Neil Kinnock and Tony Blair, it’s fair to say the Brits have been resolute, but it would not be wise to underestimate the Philhellenes around the world, and their collective call for the sculptures to be repatriated,” he said.

The Labour leader added that he hoped the Parliamentary Friends group would strengthen the ongoing campaign to bring together the sculptures and see them returned to their place of origin and installed in the Acropolis Museum.

With leaders of the Australian Hellenic Council and a host of parliamentary heavyweights in the audience, including Phillip Ruddock, Tony Burke, and Mark Dreyfus, along with former speaker Anna Burke, Greece’s ambassador to Australia, Mr Haris Dafaranos, said he felt “humbled to be in the cradle of Australian democracy to salute efforts to re-engage Australia” on the issue.

“It is very important to keep up the interest of the Australian public on the sculptures issue, if we are able to keep alight this torch of philhellenism in Australia this is a great encouragement for the people of Greece.”

Former ABC managing director Mr David Hill, Chairman of the International Association for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures, said the formation of the Parliamentary Friends group was a vital landmark for the global campaign.

“There aren’t many wrongs in the world that you can put right, but this is one of them, and with your support we’ll one day see justice done,” he said.

Elly Symons, vice president of Australians for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures, whose efforts were instrumental to the formation of the group, told Neos Kosmos the initiative was key to enhancing Australia’s role as an advocate for the Marbles’ reunification.

“Australians recognise the importance of honourable repatriation of cultural heritage to its rightful owners and its great to have this formally acknowledged by our politicians,” she said.

“The defacing of the Parthenon 200 years ago is no different to the bombing of the Bamiyan Buddhas by the Taliban and the destruction of Palmyra by ISIS – all go by the name of ‘cultural heritage destruction’.

Ms Symons said that Australia’s “strong sense of justice and proud philhellenic tradition” and the new bi-partisan Parliamentary Friends group made the country a potent international voice on the Marbles’ repatriation.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της Αμερικανικής Επανάστασης σερβιρίστηκε το πρώτο «κοκτέιλ» σε Γάλλους στρατιώτες στη Νέα Υόρκη. Το γευστικό μείγμα ποτών ήταν δημιούργημα της Μπέτσυ Φλάναγκαν, ιδιοκτήτριας ενός μπαρ στο Έλμσφορντ της Νέας Υόρκης.

Η Μπέτσυ ήταν χήρα, καθώς ο άντρας της είχε σκοτωθεί στη μάχη και κρατούσε το μπαρ με τον Ιρλανδό πατέρα της. Το μπαρ ήταν ιδιαίτερα δημοφιλές σε Αμερικάνους και Γάλλους στρατιώτες.

Η Μπέτσυ συνήθιζε να τους σερβίρει γευστικά ποτά που τα ονόμαζε Μπρέισερ. Ένα κοτέτσι που βρισκόταν δίπλα από το μαγαζί και άνηκε σε έναν Άγγλο, δημιουργούσε μεγάλο πρόβλημα στους ιδιοκτήτες. Ο θόρυβος των πτηνών εκνεύριζε την Μπέτσυ και τον πατέρα της γιατί δεν μπορούσαν να κοιμηθούν.

Αντίστοιχα, ο Άγγλος ενοχλούνταν από την οχλαγωγία του μαγαζιού. Το κλίμα για τους Βρετανούς δεν ήταν ιδιαίτερα ευνοϊκό την περίοδο εκείνη και οι σχέσεις των δύο γειτόνων, όπως και των δύο χωρών, ήταν εχθρικές. Ο Φλάναγκαν με την κόρη του, θεωρώντας ότι οι κότες διατάρασσαν την ηρεμία των πελατών, αποφάσισαν να τις σφάξουν. Η σφαγή έγινε χωρίς έλεος και η επόμενη μέρα άλλαξε την ιστορία των μπαρ…

Η Μπέτσι σέρβιρε ειδικό μενού με φρέσκα κοτόπουλα. Ανάμεσα στους πελάτες ήταν πολλοί Γάλλοι στρατιώτες. Όταν το γεύμα τελείωσε η Μπέτυ τους προσκάλεσε στο μπαρ και τους σέρβιρε τα Μπρέισερ που έφτιαχνε, διακοσμημένα με ουρές κοκόρων. Οι πελάτες έκαναν πρόποση στην υγεία του ηττημένου Άγγλου αναφωνώντας «Vive le cock-tail» και συνέχισαν να πίνουν τα μεθυστικά ποτά της Μπέτσυ.

Το Κοκτέιλ προέκυψε από τον συνδυασμό των λέξεων «Κοκ» που σημαίνει κόκορας και «τέιλ» που σημαίνει ουρά. Η προέλευση της ονομασίας από την έμπνευση της Μπέτσυ είναι η δημοφιλέστερη που έχει διατυπωθεί. Η πρώτη επίσημη αναφορά στο κοκτέιλ έγινε το 1803 και η πρώτη καταγεγραμμένη συνταγή ανήκει στον καπετάνιο Αλεξάντερ το 1831.

Μείωση κατά 1,7% κατέγραψε η δύναµη του ελληνικού εµπορικού στόλου, από πλοία 100 ΚΟΧ και άνω, τον Αύγουστο 2015, σε ετήσια βάση, έναντι µείωσης 2,4% που σηµειώθηκε κατά την αντίστοιχη σύγκριση του έτους 2014 προς το 2013.

Σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της Ελληνικής Στατιστικής Αρχής, η ολική χωρητικότητα του ελληνικού εµπορικού στόλου, από πλοία 100 ΚΟΧ και άνω, μειώθηκε κατά 1,5% τον Αύγουστο, έναντι αύξησης 1,0% που σηµειώθηκε κατά την αντίστοιχη σύγκριση του έτους 2014 προς το 2013.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has seized 10 kilograms of the drug ice, intended for a suburb in Canberra, and arrested a Nigerian national in a joint operation with Australian Border Force.

AFP officers said Australian Border Force in Sydney discovered the methamphetamine concealed in statues, which had been imported into Australia from China earlier this month.

The drugs, expected to have a street value of $10 million, were intended for the north Canberra suburb of Kaleen.

ACT police took control of the operation and continued with a controlled delivery of the drugs to Canberra.

Police said after the package was delivery to a residential address in Kaleen, the three statues were collected by the Nigerian national and driven to a second address in Kaleen, before being opened.

Yesterday, officers arrested Nigerian national at the Jolimont Centre in Canberra, when he tried to board a bus to Sydney.

Police said the man had on him the packages that had been removed from the statues.

The 32-year-old man had arrived in Australia in July this year on a student visa.

A search warrant was executed on one of the houses in Kaleen where police said similar packaging and statues were located.

The AFP also seized a car from the property.

The 32-year-old man is due to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, where he will be charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug.

Deputy Chief Police Officer Andrea Quinn credited the seizure to collaboration between law enforcement agencies.

“We continue to work closely with our partners to prevent this destructive drug reaching our streets,” Commander Quinn said.

Greek government raises the price of the country’s most popular archaeological site from A$19.06 to A$80.44

Pericles’ symbol of Democracy, the Parthenon, has been turned into the symbol of a cash-strapped nation overnight.

In search of a money-generating solution, Alexis Tsipras and the Ministry of Tourism decided to capitalise on the citadel’s popularity, increasing admission fees.

To replenish the government’s finances, the Greek economy has targeted the streams of tourists arriving to visit the cradle of the famous Athenian civilisation.

Athens is reportedly hiking the Acropolis ticket from A$19.06 to as much as A$80.44 per person, sparking many negative comments.
With more than 10,000 tourists visiting the holy rock each day during peak season, the current entrance fee was dubbed “unacceptably low” by SYRIZA party officials.

Alexis Tsipras’ government has argued additional revenues from tourists could offset austerity measures demanded by international bailout creditors, such as higher taxation on all private education.
“By introducing the price adjustment at state museums and archaeological site entrance fees, we can repeal and replace that measure that affects many more Greeks,” said Culture Minister Aristides Baltas in a recent statement.

Greek travel agents, however, fear drastically soaring prices fourfold will not help the country’s finances breathe but deter potential visitors from coming.

“The value-added tax hikes on all goods and tourism services, as well as the announced increases to the ticket prices of museums and archaeological sites, burden the travel package so much that it will become uncompetitive in the end,” said Lysandros Tsilidis, the president of the federation of Greek travel agents.

The Acropolis won’t be the only Greek treasure to suffer, however, as the Greek culture ministry confirmed higher prices will also come in at 200 state museums.

Popular tourist sites, the likes of Ancient Olympia and the Minoan ruins of Knossos in Crete, will also more than double their entrance fees.

The new prices will apply between April and November 2016, with a 50 per cent discount for the rest of the year while unemployed Greeks will be granted free entry.

Meanwhile, the number of people visiting Greek museums in June, rose by 9.5 per cent over last year, with receipts rising by 13.4 per cent, according to figures published on Wednesday by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT).

There was a 7.8 per cent rise in the number of visitors to archaeological sites during the same month. Receipts rose by 10.1 per cent.

Between January and June this year, visitors to museums have risen by 11.8 per cent and receipts by 17.2 per cent. During the same period, there was a 11.2 per cent rise in visitors and 10.7 per cent increase in receipts at archaeological sites.

Συγκεκριμένα, τα βλέμματα εστιάζονται σε δύο προπονητές: τον Γιούργκεν Κλοπ που θα βρεθεί για πρώτη φορά στον πάγκο της Λίβερπουλ στο εκτός έδρας ματς με την Τότεναμ και στον Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο που βιώνει την πιο έντονη κρίση στην προπονητική καριέρα του. Αν δεν καταφέρει να νικήσει ούτε την Αστον Βίλα που βρίσκεται σε τραγική κατάσταση, τότε ίσως και να έχουμε θέμα προπονητή στο «Στάμφορντ Μπριτζ».

Αξιοπρόσεκτη είναι η παράδοση των αναμετρήσεων της Γουότφορντ με την Αρσεναλ στο πρωτάθλημα Αγγλίας, καθώς στο σύνολο, οι «κανονιέρηδες» υστερούν έχοντας μία νίκη λιγότερη (7 έναντι 8).

Ωστόσο, όλες οι νίκες της Γουότφορντ σημειώθηκαν τη δεκαετία του 1980, στη «χρυσή» εποχή του συλλόγου, με τον Ελτον Τζον διοικητικό ηγέτη και παίκτες όπως ο Τζον Μπαρνς, ο Λούθερ Μπλίσετ και ο Πατ Ράις.

Η ομάδα του Βίγκο προέρχεται επίσης από βαθμολογική απώλεια (0-0 με τη Χετάφε), αλλά παραμένει αήττητη ως τώρα και έχει βεβαίως ως «παράσημο» το εντυπωσιακό 4-1 επί της Μπαρτσελόνα, τον περασμένο μήνα στο «Μπαλαϊδος».

Το αποτέλεσμα στο «Μαδριγάλ» μπορεί να επιτρέψει σε Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης και Μπαρτσελόνα να αναρριχηθούν στην κορυφή, καθώς ισοβαθμούν στη δεύτερη θέση με τη Θέλτα.

Οι δύο «αιώνιοι» του ισπανικού ποδοσφαίρου αγωνίζονται εντός έδρας το Σάββατο και έχουν φαινομενικά εύκολες αποστολές, με τους «μπλαουγκράνα» να υποδέχονται τη Ράγιο Βαγεκάνο και τους «μερένγκες» τη Λεβάντε. Η ερώτηση ποιός μπορεί να νικήσει την Μπάγερν Μονάχου στην μπουντεσλίγκα, εξακολουθεί και υφίσταται, καθώς η αντίπαλος του Ολυμπιακού στο Champions League παραμένει πρωτοπόρος και χωρίς βαθμολογική απώλεια.

Υποψήφιος «θύτης» στο πλαίσιο της 9ης αγωνιστικής είναι η Βέρντερ Βρέμης που υποδέχεται τους Βαυαρούς και θα επιδιώξει το καλύτερο δυνατό.

Παράλληλα, η Σάλκε, αντίπαλος του Αστέρα Τρίπολης στο Europa League, φιλοξενεί την Χέρτα Βερολίνου και είναι το λογικό φαβορί.

Το «Derby d’Italia» που κλείνει την «αυλαία» της αγωνιστικής δεσπόζει στο πρόγραμμα της 8ης ημέρας, με την οποία επαναρχίζει το ιταλικό πρωτάθλημα μετά τη διακοπή για τις εθνικές ομάδες.

Η Ίντερ υποδέχεται το βράδυ της Κυριακής (21:45) στο «Τζιουζέπε Μεάτσα» την πρωταθλήτρια Γιουβέντους και θέλει τη νίκη για να παραμείνει σε απόσταση… βολής από την κορυφή, την ώρα που η «γηραιά κυρία» προσπαθεί να αφήσει πίσω το κάκιστο φετινό ξεκίνημα (2 νίκες, 2 ισοπαλίες και 3 ήττες) και να μειώσει την απόσταση από τις ομάδες που προπορεύονται στη βαθμολογία.

Ένα απ’ τα παραδοσιακά ντέρμπι του Championnat, αυτό ανάμεσα στην Μονακό και την Λιόν, ξεχωρίζει απ’ το πρόγραμμα της 10ης αγωνιστικής, με την οποία συνεχίστηκε την Παρασκευή το γαλλικό πρωτάθλημα.

Οι δύο αντίπαλοι συνέχισαν να απογοητεύουν με τις εμφανίσεις τους, τους οπαδούς τους, καθώς για μια ακόμη φορά δεν κατάφεραν να πάρουν το τρίποντο.

Ιδιαίτερα οι γηπεδούχοι Μονεγάσκοι, έχασαν μια ακόμη ευκαιρία για νίκη, καθώς παραχώρησαν ισοπαλία 1-1 στους φιλοξενούμενους. Το 1-0 έκανε στο 39′ ο Πάσαλιτς, ενώ στο 85′ ο Ράφαελ ισοφάρισε για τη Λιόν

An angler has won $10,000 after catching the first of 76 fish tagged as part of a tourism promotion in the Northern Territory.

Fisherman Liam Hale said there were “a few expletives” after he saw the tag that indicated the fish was part of the Million Dollar competition.

“I can’t even think anymore. It is very surreal,” Mr Hale told media on Saturday after his prize was confirmed.

He almost missed out on the fish, after his line became tangled with his son’s, who had hooked a catfish at about the same time, but they were able to free the lines.

“When we got it in the boat… it was covered in algae so we thought it was an old fisheries tag and when I pulled the algae off I saw Million Dollar competition written on it,” he said.

There was a hold up with confirmation that Mr Hale had won the prize because he is an employee of Qantas, which is sponsoring the promotion.

“I wasn’t supposed to be registered,” Mr Hale said.
“The terms and conditions have been amended.”

The executive director for marketing at Tourism NT, Adam Coward, said it was just a remarkable coincidence that an airline employee had won the prize.

“We went through the whole process and we could see no advantage to the person who won here,” Mr Coward said.

Mr Hale’s son, Kai, said it was “very, very exciting” to be on board the boat when they landed the fish.

“We weren’t expecting to catch a $10,000 barra at all,” he said.

NT Chief Minister Adam Giles tweeted on Saturday night that there were reports one of the tagged fish had been captured, and on Saturday he sent another message with confirmation of the catch.

As part of the Million Dollar Fish competition anglers that register can win $10,000 if they catch one of 75 tagged barramundi, with another tagged fish worth $1 million for the person who catches it.

Some have been sceptical of the chances of catching one of the fish, which were released over an area of about 374,000 square kilometres across the Top End.

The Million Dollar Fish competition runs until February 29, 2016.
