Την ευκαιρία να μειώσει τη διαφορά των εννέα βαθμών από την πρωτοπόρο Γιουβέντους, έχει η Ρόμα, που υποδέχεται την «βέκια σινιόρα» στο «Ολίμπικο» τη Δευτέρα, στο πλαίσιο της 25ης αγωνιστικής του ιταλικού πρωταθλήματος. Σχετικά δύσκολη έξοδος για την τρίτη Νάπολι, που φιλοξενείται την Κυριακή στο Τορίνο από την τοπική «Γκρανάτα».

Σε ό,τι αφορά τη Λάτσιο, δοκιμάζεται στην έδρα της Σασουόλο, ενώ Ιντερ και Φιορεντίνα αναμετρώνται την Κυριακή, έχοντας προκριθεί στη φάση των «16» του Europa League, η μεν Ιντερ κόντρα στην Σέλτικ, η δε Φιορεντίνα κόντρα στην Τότεναμ.

Ένα ματς-φωτιά περιλαμβάνει το πρόγραμμα της 27ης αγωνιστικής της Premier League. Η Λίβερπουλ υποδέχεται την Μάντσεστερ Σίτι την Κυριακή στο «Ανφιλντ» σε αναμέτρηση που… κόβει την ανάσα. Οι πρωταθλητές μείωσαν τη διαφορά από την πρωτοπόρο Τσέλσι στους πέντε βαθμούς και θα προσπαθήσουν να «σφίξουν τη θηλιά» γύρω από την ομάδα του Μουρίνιο, η οποία την ίδια μέρα παίζει στον τελικό του League Cup με την Τότεναμ.

Όμως, η Λίβερπουλ κέρδισε έξι «χρυσούς» πόντους στα δύο τελευταία ματς, με Τότεναμ και Σαουθάμπτον και κατάφερε να «αναστηθεί». Πλέον είναι μόλις δύο βαθμούς πίσω από την τέταρτη θέση που οδηγεί στο Champions League, 12 αγωνιστικές πριν από το τέλος. Ωστόσο, αυτό που συνδέει τις δύο αντιπάλους, είναι το ευρωπαϊκό «αντίο». Η Σίτι έχασε στο Μάντσεστερ από την Μπαρτσελόνα και μπορεί να ελπίζει μόνο σε θαύμα, ενώ η Λίβερπουλ αποκλείστηκε χθες από την Μπεσίκτας στη φάση των «32» του Europa League.

«Μαύρη» ήταν η ευρωπαϊκή βραδιά και για την Αρσεναλ που ηττήθηκε 3-1 από το Μονακό στο Λονδίνο και θα προσπαθήσει να «συνέλθει» με νίκη την Κυριακή εναντίον της Εβερτον. Η Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ παλεύει για να επιστρέψει στο Champions League και δεν έχει περιθώρια για απώλειες, ειδικά στο «Ολντ Τράφορντ» όπου υποδέχεται το Σάββατο τη Σάντερλαντ.

Όσον αφορά την Αστον Βίλα, ο κατήφορος μοιάζει ατελείωτος. Μετά από 8 ήττες και 3 ισοπαλίες στους τελευταίους 11 αγώνες, οι «Χωριάτες» αντιμετωπίζουν τη Νιούκαστλ στο «Σεντ Τζέιμς Παρκ» αναζητώντας την πρώτη τους νίκη στο πρωτάθλημα από τις 7 Δεκεμβρίου!

Η απροσδόκητη εντός έδρας ήττα της Μπαρτσελόνα από τη Μάλαγα, το περασμένο Σάββατο, έδωσε την ευκαιρία στη Ρεάλ να αποσπαστεί τέσσερις βαθμούς στην κορυφή του ισπανικού πρωταθλήματος, μία διαφορά που οι «μερένγκες» θέλουν (τουλάχιστον) να διατηρήσουν ως το μεγάλο ντέρμπι της 22ης Μαρτίου στο «Καμπ Νου». Για να το πετύχουν, οι πρωταθλητές Ευρώπης πρέπει να ξεπεράσουν δύο συνεχόμενα επικίνδυνα παιχνίδια, το πρώτο εκ των οποίων είναι την προσεχή Κυριακή στη Μαδρίτη με αντίπαλο τη Βιγιαρεάλ.

Όσο κι αν το «Μπερναμπέου» παραμένει αλώβητο μετά την ήττα από την Ατλέτικο τον Σεπτέμβριο και παρότι η ομάδα του Κάρλο Αντσελότι θα εμφανιστεί ξεκούραστη, αφού δεν είχε αγώνα μεσοβδόμαδα, το ματς αυτό κρύβει παγίδες για τη Ρεάλ, που ακόμη δεν έχει ξεπεράσει πλήρως την αγωνιστική κάμψη του τελευταίου διμήνου. Η Βιγιαρεάλ άλλωστε πραγματοποιεί πολύ καλή πορεία, βρίσκεται στην έκτη θέση και διαθέτει στις τάξεις της τον παίκτη-αποκάλυψη της φετινής Primera Division, τον Αργεντινό Λουτσιάνο Βιέτο.

Έχει αποδείξει δε ότι είναι πολύ επικίνδυνη στα εκτός έδρας ματς με τους «μεγάλους», νικώντας 1-0 την Ατλέτικο και χάνοντας στις λεπτομέρειες από τη Μπαρτσελόνα (3-2), σε ένα παιχνίδι όπου προηγήθηκε δύο φορές. Το ευχάριστο για τον Αντσελότι είναι ότι πιθανότατα θα έχει ξανά στη διάθεσή του τον Λούκα Μόντριτς, που επιστρέφει μετά από τρίμηνη απουσία, ενώ αντίθετα θα απουσιάσουν και πάλι οι τραυματίες Σέρχιο Ράμος και Χαμές Ροντρίγκες.

Η Μπαρτσελόνα από την πλευρά της δεν έχει -θεωρητικά τουλάχιστον- δύσκολα παιχνίδια ως το «classico» και ελπίζει σε βαθμολογική απώλεια της Ρεάλ, είτε την Κυριακή είτε την επόμενη εβδομάδα στο Μπιλμπάο, προκειμένου να την πλησιάσει σε «απόσταση βολής». Οι Καταλανοί ξεπέρασαν το σοκ της ήττας από τη Μάλαγα με τη μεγάλη νίκη επί της Μάντσεστερ Σίτι στο Champions League και το Σάββατο αντιμετωπίζουν εκτός έδρας την προτελευταία της βαθμολογίας Γρανάδα. Στο ίδιο γήπεδο είχαν ηττηθεί πέρυσι (ελέω ενός μεγάλου ματς του Ορέστη Καρνέζη), αλλά αυτό το… σενάριο δύσκολα θα επαναληφθεί φέτος.

Στο μεταξύ, σπουδαίο παιχνίδι γίνεται την Κυριακή στο «Σάντσεθ Πιχουάν», όπου η Σεβίλη υποδέχεται την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης, σε μία μάχη με φόντο την έξοδο στο Champions League.

Η ομάδα της Ανδαλουσίας έχασε έδαφος την περασμένη εβδομάδα, λόγω της ήττας από τη Σοσιεδάδ, και χρειάζεται οπωσδήποτε νίκη για να παραμείνει στο… κυνήγι της τετράδας, ενώ οι «ροχιμπλάνκος» καλούνται να ξεπεράσουν την απογοήτευση της ήττας από τη Λεβερκούζεν και τις σημαντικές απουσίες (Κόκε, Σικέιρα, Σαούλ) και να πάρουν ένα θετικό αποτέλεσμα, που θα τους διατηρήσει στην τρίτη θέση.

Τους πρωταθλητές ακολουθεί σε απόσταση τριών βαθμών η Βαλένθια, η οποία φιλοξενεί το μεσημέρι της Κυριακής τη Ρεάλ Σοσιεδάδ, μία εβδομάδα πριν ταξιδέψει στη Μαδρίτη για το κρίσιμο ματς με την Ατλέτικο.

Με γκολ του Γκονζάλεθ λίγο πριν την εκπνοή του ημιχρόνου, η Εσπανιόλ επιβλήθηκε 1-0 της ουραγού Κόρντομπα, στην αναμέτρηση με την οποία άνοιξε η «αυλαία» της αγωνιστικής.

Απίστευτη ανατροπή έκανε η Καέν στη Μασσαλία! Ενώ βρέθηκε να χάνει με 2-0 από τη Μαρσέιγ στο 63′, μέσα σε 20 λεπτά έφερε τα πάνω – κάτω και με 3-2 πήρε τη μεγάλη νίκη στο παιχνίδι με το οποίο άνοιξε την «αυλαία» της 27ης αγωνιστικής στο γαλλικό πρωτάθλημα.

Οι γηπεδούχοι μετά την ήττα αυτή μάλλον μένουν εκτός τίτλου, ενώ ο Μαρσέλο Μπιέλσα είναι πολύ δύσκολο να συνεχίσει στο τιμόνι της ομάδας.

Δύσκολο έργο έχει η πρωτοπόρος του Championnat, Λιόν, στην προσπάθεια της να παραμείνει πρωτοπόρος, καθώς στο πλαίσιο της 27ης αγωνιστικής, δοκιμάζεται στην έδρα της απρόβλεπτης, Λιλ.

IF the Sydney derby becomes a battle of the fittest, it’s a fair bet that it will go right down to the wire.

Since day one the Wanderers have prided themselves on fitness and preparation as good as any in the league. When results have dipped, they have just pushed harder.

But come Saturday, even amid the fervency of a partisan Parramatta crowd, you get the impression that their opponents won’t be fazed. For a crucial part of Graham Arnold’s rebuilding of Sydney FC has been to entrust the players to Andrew Clark, the conditioning coach he inherited at the Mariners and who became — according to a colleague of both — “almost like Arnie’s shrink”.

A sounding board for Arnold on tactics and potential signings, as well as the players’ fitness regimen, Clark has his eyes on next week, next month and next season, and where the players should physically be at for each of those points.

“Athletic development is not a quick process — anyone who tells you that they can come in and in six weeks have changed someone is full of shit,” he said. “It’s a slow, consistent process to see the results.

“It’s been a step by step process that’s nowhere near finished, though things are going in a positive direction. We’ve just got a long way to go.”

His remit — working with all of Sydney’s medical staff, as he is quick to emphasise — covers everything from the stretching and gym work that begins every day, to the food the players eat to fuel their recovery program. Each player completes a wellbeing questionnaire each day, part of data compilation that guides the training program of every player in the squad.

“At the Mariners I’d been working with the players for up to 10 years, and I just knew in detail how their bodies would react to certain training loads,” he said. “At a new club you start all over again, and it’s an all-consuming period at the start to start to compile all the data you need.

“Every individual has different problems that you have to address within the structure of team training.

“Look at say Bernie Ibini and Shane Smeltz, two classic cases of completely different needs to be at their best. Smeltzy is someone who I’ve really had to study along with my medical team, to understand how his bodywork.

“I’m sure he had to learn about us too, but you can feel when a player is beginning to turn the corner and get a bit of faith. When you see a player regain belief in themselves, that’s all you need to get job satisfaction.”

The key to is giving the players everything they need — which is why, with issues over the pitch at the club’s usual training ground, the gear from cones and weights to the lunch buffet have to be packed up and ferried to wherever the team is that day, from Leichhardt Oval to Allianz Stadium.

Then “they get given a number of different ways for their recovery — all of it based in food. We control their diet by making breakfast and lunch available every day, and provide the greatest recovery tool.

“We have 17 year old kids in and around the team — what would they know about what to eat in the first 30 minutes or two hours after training?”

Above all it’s science with a human interface; because for all the data collected, “the best model is sitting down and talking to people, keeping communication going”, Clark said. “The best regulator of training is a person’s brain — if you’re feeling tired you’re tired for a reason. You have to listen to the person.

“Because of the long off season here, and the way the season finished last year, they were a little bit behind where they should have started from when we came in.

“We’re slowly starting to get there. Every day we’re in a better place, and if that continues we’ll end up in a really good place.”

Simon Mignolet looks dejected at the Ataturk stadium, Istanbul

Simon Mignolet insists Liverpool can’t afford to dwell on their “devastating” Europa League exit as they prepare for Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The Reds crashed out 5-4 on penalties to Besiktas after a 1-0 defeat at the Ataturk Stadium made it 1-1 on aggregate.

Dejan Lovren missed the decisive spot-kick as Slaven Bilic’s men advanced to the last 16.

Liverpool, who had practiced penalties in the build up to the game, now have little recovery time prior to Sunday’s noon kick-off at Anfield.

“Everyone is devastated to go out, especially like that at the end of 120 minutes,” Mignolet told the ECHO.

“Having put so much effort into the game, it’s a real disappointment to go out.

“We defended well for 120 minutes. We practice penalties every week in training but a shootout is always a lottery and it’s so disappointing to go out.

“We have to look forward and prepare ourselves as best we can. We need to recover and then go again on Sunday.

“It’s another big game and we need to try to get back to winning ways. We have to focus on the job in hand.”

We are together in good moments and in bad moments

Mignolet insists there was no blame attached to Lovren, who blazed his penalty over when he had the chance to take the shootout into sudden death.

It continues the £20million centre-back’s miserable start to his Reds career.

“I don’t want to single anyone out,” Mignolet said.

“I’ve always said when you win, when you lose, when you go through, when you go out, it’s always as a squad.

“You are always together in good moments and bad moments.

“I think 1-0 at home was a good result for us. Then you hope to score an away goal but it didn’t happen. Besiktas played well.”

We still have a lot left to play for this season

Going out of the Europa League means Liverpool must now secure a top-four finish in the Premier League if they are going to play Champions League football next season.

Mignolet believes they are capable of bouncing back and achieving that target.

“Of course we can do it,” he said.

“We always said we want to get in the Champions League for next season.

“We’re still in the FA Cup and we’re close to the top four in the Premier League so there is still a lot to play for this season.

“It’s not easy at this moment when you’ve just come out of the dressing room and we’ve gone out of Europa League but we have to put it behind us.

“On Friday morning our preparations start for the Manchester City game.”

The Western Sydney Wanderers have a strange knack at getting results when they need them most.

Somehow they’re Asian Champions but last on the A-League ladder. On Wednesday they managed to secure the only Australian win in the ACL qualifying rounds, but just a couple of days before they fell 2-1 against Adelaide Untied.

It’s been a weird couple of months for Wanderers fans. Nothing is really certain for the club.

At least today, they enter derby territory, where spectacle and fan rivalry trump form.

If you had to bluff at the result, Sydney FC would be the natural victors.

The team haven’t lost a match since December, albeit with a couple of draws in the mix too. They managed to claw back from a 3-3 draw with Melbourne Victory to smash through the Central Coast Mariners 4-2 last week.

Coach Graham Arnold says the team must remove all emotion to really have the upper hand in the derby.

“Form goes out the window when it comes to a derby,” he says.

“It’s great for the fans, it’s great for the game, but for us we have to go out there and play our own game, remove all emotion and play to our strengths.”

Arnold says he’ll be expecting to come up against a re-energized squad despite the mid week travel.

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic left five players behind to be able to field a strong team tonight.

The government rolled back from its earlier decision to suspend all football matches indefinitely and instead called a suspension for just one week that will only affect the Super League.

The decision came under the condition that authorities and clubs will adhere to promises given for containing violence.

After his second meeting with prime minister Alexis Tsipras, deputy minister for sports Stavros Kontonis announced that the Super League action of this coming weekend is suspended, but all other leagues and cups will carry on as scheduled.

“The decision of the government regarding the combating of violence is definitive and irrevocable,” he said.

“It is impossible to tolerate business interests developed in the field of sports because this runs counter to sports and the fans. All that happened in match at [the Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium between Panathinaikos and Olympiakos], where it was only thanks to a miracle that we did not have any fatalities, as well as everything that happened at the board meeting [of the Super League] have created a terrible atmosphere.

“Under these circumstances it is impossible to have games played this Sunday. I have stressed to the football authorities in our meeting that the law providing for fan clubs must be enforced.”

The minister confirmed that they would meet with the sport’s representatives and the authorities next week to see if there has been enough progress made.

He didn’t shy away from saying the suspension will continue if the situation remained the same.

Mr. Kontonis has asked the League to enforce the use of electronic tickets, to eliminate the fan associations and turn them into clubs, to install cameras in all stadiums as well as a number of other measures.

According to Greek law the government can only force a one-week suspension each time. Already this Super League season has been suspended twice for one week each time.

Late this week fierce clashes were reported at Lamia in the second-division match between the local club and Anagennisi Karditsas where a number of people were injured.

It follows clashes in a Super League meeting after the president of Olympiakos reportedly hurled a glass of water at his Panathinaikos counterpart, Yiannis Alafouzos, and a bouncer allegedly punched Panathinaikos vice-president Vassilis Constantinou in the face.

The league was suspended previously after a fan was killed in clashes during a third division game and from a violent attack that saw a referee official seriously injured.

It still might be early days, but Greek Australian fans will be ecstatic with the way the NPL season has started.

Four out of six Greek sponsored teams have taken home wins in the first round of the NPL, with South Melbourne, Bentleigh Greens, Port Melbourne Sharks and Heidelberg United leading by example.

The not so lucky Oakleigh Cannons and Northcote City will be vying to make amends and join the four this week, as they take on some interesting opponents.

Northcote City have a tough match against Melbourne Knights tonight, after their 4-1 thrashing by Green Gully is still raw.

Coach Goran Lozanovski has been quietly realistic about his side’s health, after some shock transfers left him and the club reeling.

Defender Kristian Konstantinidis left the squad a week before the season start moving to 2014 champions South Melbourne, while captain Adrian Chiapetta secured a move to Oakleigh Cannons.

“[It’s] hard to swallow sometimes but if a player does perform and have a good season, suddenly these big clubs come poaching them and start giving them all the dreams that they think are going to happen in one season,” he told The Corner Flag this week.

“It’s part and parcel of football. It’s disappointing on our behalf, especially losing KK [Kristian Konstantinidis] a week before the season starts, but I’ve been a player, I understand where they come from and it’s a bitter pill to swallow, but you need to move on.”

Northcote City management has told Neos Kosmos that the club is being realistic about its revival, and expects a fully fledged premiership contending team in the next two years.

A team that is a far cry from its 2014 self is Port Melbourne Sharks. Eric Vassiliadis’ team has carved out its first solid win of the season after a hugely successful pre-season.

Calling the club the NPL’s “best kept secret”, Vassiliadis saw his team secure a clinical 3-1 win against Hume City last week.

Former Northcote City boy, Trent Rixon proved he was worth the money after he scored two out of the three goals for the team and will be integral in their match against Pascoe Vale tonight.

FFA Cup darlings, Bentleigh Greens come back to more familiar territory when they take on Dandenong Thunder Saturday.

The Greek sponsored team took on NPL newbies North Geelong last week and came out with a 2-0 clean sheet while Dandenong Thunder almost mimicked them with a 2-1 win over Werribee City.

Greens coach John Anastasiadis has been working hard to gel the new team, with six of the starting 11 in the North Geelong match being new recruits.

Oakleigh Cannons might have been the first casualties of the season after their disappointing 1-0 loss to South Melbourne, but Miron Bleiberg’s boys aren’t ones to dwell on lost chances.

They’ve had more than a week to fix any problems before they take on current leaders Green Gully on Monday.

They were the better team last week, showing an impressive style on the pitch and pushing the ball back to their side amazingly quickly.

Sadly, their tries fell short, with South Melbourne’s goalie making a number of tough saves.

The Green Gully match will be a great test to show if the club has any premiership chances this year.

Heidelberg United started their season on a high thanks to former A-League player and young Socceroo Daniel Vasilevski. His two goals and plus Kaine Sheppard’s kick catapulted the team to a very easy 3-0 win over Pascoe Vale.

George Katsakis’ side take on Werribee City on Sunday in their new makeshift home of Epping Stadium brimming with confidence.

South Melbourne have a seemingly easy match tonight, travelling to Geelong to take on a defeated North Geelong.

South weren’t that impressed with their opening performance last week despite winning the match. On the back foot for most of it, the players weren’t fussed with Oakleigh winning possession for the majority of the second half.

Complacency is a worry for coach Chris Taylor, as the team enters the season as champions.

Olympiakos drew 2-2 with Ukranian outfit Dnipro at home this week to bow out of the Europa League, despite facing an opponent which on paper had appeared relatively easy.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Kiev, Olympiakos tried to overturn its deficit in front of a capacity crowd at the Karaiskakis Stadium, but its early lead came to nothing owing to the team’s persistent defensive frailties.

With just 13 minutes gone Kostas Mitroglou broke free inside the box, after a Luka Milivojevic clever pass through, and slotted the ball into the Dnipro net for 1-0.

Yet just eight minutes later a free-kick from the left taken by Ruslan Rotan was only half-stopped by Roberto, and Artem Fedetskiy beat the Olympiakos defence to the rebound to head the ball in for the equalizer.

Milivojevic left Olympiakos with 10 men for 40 minutes after tackling an opponent from behind near the halfway line to earn himself a straight red. This was followed by a number of chances that Dnipro had to lead on the night.

In the last few minutes of the game Olympiakos chased a winner and earned a penalty two minutes from the end that Chori Dominguez turned into the hosts’ second goal.

However Croat striker Nikola Kalinic restored parity on the night as he outran the Olympiakos defenders and rounded Roberto for 2-2.

Demoralised home fans chanted “that’s not how we dream of Olympiakos” on their way out of the Karaiskakis Stadium.

Οι Βέλγοι προηγήθηκαν με τον Μίτροβιτς στο 29′ όμως οι Κοζλόφ, Γιουσούποβ και Κουράνι χάρισαν την πρόκριση στην Ντιναμό.
