The Western Sydney Wanderers’ shocking injury run looks set to continue with the club sweating on the result of scans on Mark Bridge’s groin injury, which could see the forward sidelined for several weeks.

Bridge was hurt during the first half of the 1-0 loss against Brisbane Roar on Sunday, managing to play out the first 45 minutes before needing to be substituted.

The club is already without striker Brendon Santalab and utility Shannon Cole (both shoulder injuries) for the rest of the season and Brendan Hamill (torn quadriceps) may not make it back in time for the final few domestic matches.

Coach Tony Popovic revealed that Bridge appeared to have injured either his “abdominal or groin” after the match, admitting the early prognosis “doesn’t look good” as he hobbled into the changerooms.

Western Sydney returned to Sydney on Monday from their unsuccessful trip to Brisbane and only went through a light session, with their gruelling schedule giving Popovic and his assistants little opportunity to put much work his squad.

The Wanderers were hoping to get a swift answer on the extent of the injury but will not have the results of the scan until early Tuesday. However, he is certainly out of the club’s upcoming home matches, against Melbourne City on Wednesday and then against Melbourne Victory just 48 hours later.

The coach said he believed that Bridge’s injury was not just the result of a sheer accident at Suncorp Stadium, saying the seeds of such soft-tissue injuries were sewn in the absence of a proper pre-season and an unforgiving match schedule.

“I think it’s an accumulation [related injury],’ Popovic said. “We certainly didn’t do the pre-season that we’d done in the first two years, we missed 50-odd days of training going through the Asian Champions League.”

“We wouldn’t change it for anything, winning the ACL, going to Morocco, but when we came back we were certainly not at the level that we wanted to be at and hence we’ve picked up a lot more injuries than we did in the first two years.”

The stifling humidity in Brisbane took a major toll on two sides still trying to recover from their midweek Asian matches, with the Roar staying on a high after their 1-0 win over Urawa Reds – with a Brendan Borrello strike deciding both matches.

“It was a really tough game. The conditions were difficult, both teams trying to back up from ACL commitments, and physically we found it difficult,” Popovic said. “We’ve got a lot of players that are new to the club, we’ve got a lot of players now that are unfortunately long-term injuries – we’ve got five, possibly another one.

“Physically I think we’re struggling. The effort’s there, the commitment’s there but we’re just not quite at the level that we want to be.”

With the A-League season all but finished for the Wanderers, despite having a third of the season still to play, Popovic is likely to start trying even more players with a view to deciding who he wants to keep for next season.

There’s a strong chance the Wanderers will field two entirely different sides for the matches against City and Victory, with those players who fronted up against Brisbane more likely to be rested against City to give them extra time to prepare for the Victory game.

Journeyman Nick Ward was recently added to the A-League squad and the 29-year-old, who has not played professional football since taking to the field with the Newcastle Jets in April last year, may get a chance to make an impression and save his career.

Midfielder Nick Kalmar, technically only eligible for the Asian Champions League, looks set to also be re-activated as an injury-replacement player for Bridge, three weeks after his last injury deal expired.

After facing the Victory on Friday night, the players then fly to South Korea for their battle with FC Seoul the next Wednesday and then race back to Sydney to face the Newcastle Jets at home on the subsequent Saturday –before trips to Brisbane and Perth await in the week after.

Λίβερπουλ έμεινε στο 0-0 με τη Μπλάκμπερν στο “Anfield” και πλέον θα χρειαστεί και δεύτερο ματς στην έδρα των “ρόβερς” για να αποφασιστεί ποια εκ των δύο θα πάρει το εισιτήριο για τους “4” του Κυπέλλου, παρόλα αυτά ο Ρότζερς εξακολουθεί να έχει ακλόνητη πίστη στους ποδοσφαιριστές του.

Ο Βορειοιρλανδός τεχνικός ξεκαθάρισε πως η ομάδα του έχει όλες τις δυνατότητες να φύγει με τη νίκη από το “Ίγουντ Παρκ” ενώ δεν παρέλειψε να κάνει αναφορά στον διαιτητή Μάρινερ, λέγοντας πως έκλεισε τα μάτια το απόγευμα της Κυριακής σε πέναλτι υπέρ της ομάδας του.

“Φυσικά και πιστεύω ότι θα μπορούσε να μας δοθεί ένα πέναλτι στο πρώτο ημίχρονο. Ο Άνταμ Λαλάνα είχε βάλει το σώμα του ανάμεσα στη μπάλα και στον αντίπαλό του και ενώ πήγαινε να κάνει το σουτ ανατράπηκε.

 Πιστεύω ότι ήταν ξεκάθαρο πέναλτι. Χρειαζόμασταν λίγο την τύχη με το μέρος μας για να ανοίξει το παιχνίδι. Εάν είχαμε πετύχει γκολ στο πρώτο 20λεπτο ίσως το παιχνίδι να είχε ανοίξει”, δήλωσε αρχικά ο Ρότζερς και πρόσθεσε:

“Πρέπει να πάμε στο Μπλάκμπερν για να κερδίσουμε αλλά είμαστε σίγουρα σε θέση να το κάνουμε αυτό. Ο στόχος μας σε αυτό το ματς ήταν να είμαστε μέσα στο παιχνίδι της πρόκρισης στα ημιτελικά. Δεν πήραμε τη νίκη αλλά εξακολουθούμε να είμαστε μέσα στο παιχνίδι”.

 Να σημειωθεί πως η Μπλάκμπερν και Λίβερπουλ θα χρειαστεί να περιμένουν έναν μήνα για να λύσουν τις διαφορές τους καθώς η ρεβάνς των δύο ομάδων στα προημιτελικά του FA Cup αναμένεται να γίνει 7 ή 8 Απριλίου.

Bring on Arsenal: Rooney is fired up for FA Cup quarter final

Louis Van Gaal believes Wayne Rooney’s passion and hunger can inspire Manchester United to FA Cup glory.

Rooney has never won the FA Cup, the only domestic honour the United and England skipper has yet to lift in his illustrious career.

The 29-year-old has twice been a runner-up in the competition and is desperate to make it third time lucky by lifting the famous trophy at Wembley on May 30.

United take on Arsenal at Old Trafford tomorrow for a place in the semi-finals and Van Gaal will look to Rooney to give his side the edge they need to overcome Arsene Wenger’s side.

“I don’t know how Rooney will motivate the dressing room but I think he shall do that because he is very motivated as a captain and a player,” said Van Gaal.

He wants to win a title, he has not won the FA Cup and that is something that is missing.

“My first championship with Ajax was very important for me. It was also an emotional thing and you have seen how he was motivated in the last minute of the game against Newcastle.

“You saw him running and pressing for a lost ball [which led to United’s late winner] and that was fantastic.

“Every human being has his own identity and character and this is Wayne’s character.

“He has also picked up red cards because of that character, but against Newcastle it was fantastic.”

Despite criticism for their perceived lack of flair under Van Gaal, United’s late win at Newcastle showed they have not lost the fighting spirit that became their trademark under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Van Gaal believes that spirit and refusal to accept lost causes – epitomised by Rooney’s determination that led to the goal at Newcastle – can help steer them to an epic victory over Arsenal.

“We’ve shown a lot of times we have been coming back in the last minute, even when we are behind,” said Van Gaal.

“At Newcastle we scored out of nothing because the ball was already lost, but because of Wayne’s spirit he made it very difficult for his opponent.

“We’ve shown a fantastic fight and I’m very proud of our players.”

Although securing a top-four finish and an immediate return to the Champions League remains Van Gaal’s priority, the Red Devils boss is keen to win the FA Cup in his debut season.

After lifting the Capital One Cup with Chelsea a week ago, Jose Mourinho said he “fed on trophies”, with Van Gaal admitting he is the same as the Special One.

“You can say you play for your profession, but that’s not enough you want to win something,” said Van Gaal.

“The players want to win something, as well as the manager and the fans. If you can win a title like the FA Cup in England, it’s very important.

“When you fight for something and you get it, you are pleased, and that’s why Jose Mourinho is saying that.

“When you compare coaches with one another, titles are very important.

“When a player wins they have already the experience of winning a final, so there are a lot of positive things.”

Tomorrow’s tie marks the start of a big fortnight for United, who then face Tottenham and Liverpool in games that could go a long way to deciding whether they make the top-four.

ney acknowledged as much when he said: “It’s the start of a big two or three weeks for us, but we’ve done okay in the big games this year, although we could do better.

“It’s exciting for us. These big games here, you want to be part of them. The FA Cup quarter-final is massive for us.

“We haven’t been to a cup final for a few years and we want to try and win the competition, so I’m looking forward to that.

“The FA Cup is a massive trophy. It’s a trophy I’ve grown up as a youngster watching. I was fortunate enough to see Everton win the FA Cup in 1995. I was nine-years-old.

“It’s something I’d love to do and hopefully it’ll be this year.”

Στα… τσιμέντα αφιερώθηκε το πιο εντυπωσιακό ντέρμπι της χρονιάς που έληξε με νικητή τον Παναθηναϊκό κόντρα στον ΠΑΟΚ (Παναθηναϊκός – ΠΑΟΚ 4-3) για την 27η αγωνιστική της Σούπερ Λιγκ. Και λέμε στα «τσιμέντα» γιατί η Λεωφόρος ήταν άδεια λόγω τιμωρίας για τα επεισόδια με τον Ολυμπιακό. Χατ-τρικ του Μπεργκ με τους «πράσινους» να συνεχίζουν να κυνηγούν (55β.) τον Ολυμπιακό (58β. με ματς λιγότερο).

Η Καλλονή χάρη σε γκολ του Πετρόπουλου κέρδισε τον Πανιώνιο (Καλλονή – Πανιώνιος 1-0), με τους ηττημένους να μένουν κοντά στην επικίνδυνη ζώνη του υποβιβασμού.

Ένα πολύ σημαντικό «διπλό» εν όψει της συνέχειας πανηγύρισε η Κέρκυρα, η οποία επιβλήθηκε της του Παναιτωλικού στο Αγρίνιο (Παναιτωλικός – Κέρκυρα 0-1), χάρη σε γκολ του Γκαζαριάν.

Ο Μπεργκ έπιασε… πελάτη τον ΠΑΟΚ με χατ-τρικ

Με «χατ τρικ» του Μάρκους Μπεργκ (27′, 70′ & 87′) και ένα γκολ του Καρέλη (63′), ο Παναθηναϊκός επικράτησε 4-3 του ΠΑΟΚ, στο πλαίσιο της 27ης αγωνιστικής της Σούπερ Λιγκ, στο άδειο γήπεδο της Λεωφόρου, λόγω τιμωρίας των γηπεδούχων, αλλά και της γνωστής απόφασης του υφυπουργού Αθλητισμού, Σταύρου Κοντονή. Οι «πράσινοι» έφτασαν τους 58 βαθμούς και μοιράζονται το «ρετιρέ» με τον Ολυμπιακό που έχει πάντως αγώνα λιγότερο. Στην 3η θέση με 50 βαθμούς έμεινε ο «Δικέφαλος του Βορρά», τα γκολ του οποίου σημείωσαν οι Αθανασιάδης (42′), Σκόνδρας (60′) και Νομπόα (93′).

Περισσότεροι από 3.000 φίλαθλοι του Παναθηναϊκού συγκεντρώθηκαν πραγματοποιώντας συλλαλητήριο, έξω από το γήπεδο όπου παρακολούθησαν το παιχνίδι από γιγαντοοθόνη διαδήλωσαν για όσα συμβαίνουν στο ελληνικό ποδόσφαιρο.

Στο αγωνιστικό μέρος, μοιρασμένη κατοχή μπάλας και μέτρια θέαμα, χωρίς μία πραγματικά καλή φάση περιλάμβαναν τα πρώτα 25 λεπτά της αναμέτρησης… μονοτονία που «έσπασε» ο Μάρκους Μπεργκ στο 27ο λεπτό. Το 1-0 για τους «πράσινους» ήταν συνέπεια ωραίας ενέργειας του Ζέκα από δεξιά που πέρασε τους αμυντικούς και με σέντρα πριν η μπάλα περάσει τη γραμμή σημάδευσε το κεφάλι του Σουηδού.

Στο 41′, ο ΠΑΟΚ δημιούργησε σημαντική ευκαιρία με τον Νομπόα να βρίσκει τον Αθανασιάδη, αλλά αν και οι Ταυλαρίδης, Σίλντενφελντ δεν μπόρεσαν να τον αναχαιτίσουν, σημάδεψε άουτ. Ένα λεπτό αργότερα, όμως, ο Στέφανος Αθανασιάδης κατάφερε να στείλει την μπάλα στα δίχτυα με πλάγιο βολέ μετά από σέντερ του Σκόνδρα από δεξιά, για το 1-1.

Στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, ο ΠΑΟΚ μπήκε δυνατά, άσκησε πίεση στον Παναθηναϊκό κερδίζοντας το ένα κόρνερ, μετά το άλλο. Η πίεση του «Δικέφαλου του Βορρά» έφερε αποτέλεσμα στο 60΄, όταν ο Γιάννης Σκόνδρας έπιασε σουτ με το αριστερό και στέλνοντας την μπάλα στη γωνία του Στιλ έδωσε προβάδισμα στην ομάδα του, με 2-1.

Ο Παναθηναϊκός, όμως δεν άργησε να ισοφαρίσει σε 2-2, αφού ο Νίκος Καρέλης -είχε μπει αλλαγή στο 50′ στη θέση του Βίκτωρα Κλωναρίδη- τοποθετήθηκε έξυπνα στην πλάτη της άμυνας του ΠΑΟΚ και μετέτρεψε σε γκολ την πάσα του Μπεργκ, στο 63ο λεπτό. Η πολύ καλή συνεργασία Μπεργκ και Καρέλη συνεχίστηκε χαρίζοντας ένα τρίτο γκολ στους γηπεδούχους, στο 70΄: Η ανατροπή για τους «πράσινους» ήρθε από τον σκόρερ του πρώτου γκολ, Μάρκους Μπεργκ, με τον Σουηδό να κάνει το 3-2 απέναντι στον Ιτάνζ.

Στο 73′, ο Καρέλης έφτασε μία ανάσα από το γκολ, όταν νίκησε τον Ρικάρντο Κόστα, όμως υπό την πίεση του Πορτογάλου αστόχησε εν τέλει. Ο Παναθηναϊκός πέτυχε πάντως και 4ο γκολ στο 87΄ με σκόρερ τον συνήθη… ύποπτο, Μάρκους Μπεργκ, ενώ στο 93΄ ο Νομπόα μείωσε σε 4-3.

Την κορυφή του ισπανικού πρωταθλήματος απολαμβάνει η Μπαρτσελόνα μετά το επιβλητικό 6-1 επί της Ράγιο Βαγιεκάνο, εκμεταλλευόμενη το στραβοπάτημα της Ρεάλ από την Ατλέτικο Μπιλμπάο.

Το παιχνίδι κρίθηκε, ουσιαστικά, από τα δύο γκολ των «μπλαουγκράνα» στις αρχές κάθε ημιχρόνου, δηλαδή του Λουίς Σουάρες στο 6ο λεπτό και του Χεράρδ Πικέ στο 49ο. Έκτοτε η αναμέτρηση μετατράπηκε σε προσωπικό σόου του Λιονέλ Μέσι, που έκανε χατ-τρικ σε 12 λεπτά απέναντι στον συμπατριώτη του τερματοφύλακα της Ράγιο, Κρίστιαν Άλβαρες, με τον «ψύλλο» να φτάνει στα 30 γκολ για φέτος (όσα και ο Κριστιάνο Ρονάλντο) και συνολικά στα 272 στο ισπανικό πρωτάθλημα!

Να σημειωθεί πάντως ότι ο κορυφαίος άσος χρειάστηκε να εκτελέσει δύο φορές το πέναλτι για το 3-0, καθώς ο Άλβαρες απέκρουσε το πρώτο χτύπημα αλλά ο διαιτητής Χιλ Μανθάνο διέταξε επανάληψη καθώς παίκτες της Ράγιο μπήκαν στην περιοχή πριν σουτάρει ο Μέσι, ενώ στη φάση που η Μπαρτσελόνα κέρδισε την «εσχάτη των ποινών» αποβλήθηκε με δεύτερη κίτρινη κάρτα ο Τίτο (55΄) για τράβηγμα στον Σουάρες.

Ο αγώνας είχε πάντως… συγκινήσεις ως το τέλος του. Στο 80΄ ο Μανθάνο καταλόγισε πέναλτι εις βάρος της Μπαρτσελόνα και απέβαλε με απευθείας κόκκινη κάρτα τον Ντάνι Άλβες για το μαρκάρισμα στον Αλμπέρτο Μπουένο, ο οποίος «εκτέλεσε» από τα 11 μέτρα τον Κλαούντιο Μπράβο για το 5-1, ενώ το τελικό σκορ διαμόρφωσε ο Σουάρες στο πρώτο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων.

The Argentine added three goals to earlier strikes from Luis Suarez and Gerard Pique as the Blaugrana leapfrogged Real Madrid into pole position.

Lionel Messi scored a record 24th La Liga hat-trick as Barcelona thrashed Rayo Vallecano 6-1 at Camp Nou on Sunday to move top of La Liga.

Luis Suarez’s fifth-minute opener was all Luis Enrique’s men had to show for a dominant first-half display, during which the striker and Pedro both should have punished Rayo’s high defensive line.

However, Barca found goals much easier to come by in the second half as they capitalised on Real Madrid’s defeat at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Gerard Pique doubled the hosts’ lead in the 49th minute, before Tito was sent off for a foul on Suarez in the penalty area.

Messi’s re-taken spot-kick put the result beyond doubt and he added two more goals to move past 40 for the sixth successive season and complete his 32nd treble for Barcelona.

Alberto Bueno converted a penalty for Rayo following the dismissal of Dani Alves, but Suarez rounded off the scoring late on with his 13th of the season.

A remarkable 15th win from 16 matches in all competitions puts Barca a point clear of Real at the Liga summit with El Clasico two weeks away.

Luis Enrique was without Sergio Busquets and Neymar through injury and suspension, so Xavi and Pedro started among five changes from Wednesday’s Copa del Rey triumph at Villarreal, while Rayo boss Paco Jemez made four alterations to his line-up.

The Catalans, buoyed by Madrid’s defeat at San Mames, were quickly into their stride as Xavi’s wonderful ball on the half-volley released Suarez, who confidently stroked home with the outside of his right foot.

Pedro spurned a chance to make it 2-0 following another fine pass from Xavi and, after Roberto Trashorras curled a free-kick just wide for Rayo, Barca went close again when Suarez’s chipped pass found Lionel Messi, whose first-time lob drifted just wide.

Barca’s dominance was made to count four minutes after the restart. Jordi Alba’s free header hit the post and Pique was on hand to tap home the rebound.

Tito then hauled down Suarez in the box after 54 minutes and received a second yellow card as a result.

Messi‘s penalty was saved but a retake was ordered because of encroachment and he made no mistake at the second attempt, hammering a low shot into the bottom-right corner.

Barcelona pulled further clear in the 62nd minute when Suarez’s smart turn and shot forced a save from Cristian Alvarez but Messi tapped in the rebound.

Alvarez produced a superb low save from a Messi free-kick two minutes later but the Argentina forward was not to be denied. He completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute by latching onto a cross and showing great composure to dummy the goalkeeper before slotting in his 30th league goal of the campaign.

The hosts’ victory was soured somewhat when Alves was given a straight red after Leo Baptistao went down under his challenge and Bueno – the scorer of four goals in 15 minutes last weekend – dispatched the penalty for his 13th of the season.

Yet Suarez topped off a wonderful afternoon for the new league leaders by collecting Messi’s pass before rounding Alvarez and slotting home in injury time.

Πέραν του γοήτρου, το ντέρμπι ΠΑΟ – ΠΑΟΚ έχει και σημαντικό βαθμολογικό ενδιαφέρον, καθώς μετά την αφαίρεση τριών βαθμών απ τον Παναθηναϊκό, η διαφορά των δύο ομάδων που διεκδικούν την 2η θέση στο πρωτάθλημα, μειώθηκε στους δύο βαθμούς.

Κάτι που σημαίνει, ότι ο ΠΑΟΚ χρειάζεται οπωσδήποτε την νίκη για να ξεπεράσει τους «πράσινους», ενώ οι γηπεδούχοι έχουν την πολυτέλεια να παίξουν για δύο αποτελέσματα.

Nωρίτερα στις 15:00, η Καλλονή υποδέχεται τον Πανιώνιο, ο οποίος ψάχνει ακόμη μία σημαντική νίκη, με την οποία θα απομακρυνθεί και άλλο από τη ζώνη του υποβιβασμού.

Στις 17:15 διεξάγονται δύο αγώνες. Ο Παναιτωλικός υποδέχεται την Κέρκυρα, η οποία είναι μία από τις φορμαρισμένες ομάδες του πρωταθλήματος στις τελευταίες αγωνιστικές και ο ΟΦΗ τη Ξάνθη, λίγες ημέρες μετά τον αποκλεισμό των Κρητικών και την πρόκριση της ακριτικής ομάδας στους «4» του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδας.

Another underwhelming performance from the Western Sydney Wanderers has seen them slump to their twelfth defeat this season as Brisbane Roar took full advantage to secure a 1-0 win at Suncorp Stadium.

Despite the closeness of the final result, the Roar created vastly more chances and were seldom pressured by the visitors, who produced one of the weariest displays of a dreadful campaign.

However, they very nearly pinched an undeserving draw deep into into injury time, when substitute Tomi Juric let fly with an effort that struck the underside of the crossbar and then bounced on the line below. Juric celebrated – an attempt to convince the linesman more than anything else – but play was waved on and Brandon Borrello’s 53rd minute strike would decide the outcome.

The win hoists Brisbane into the top six, displacing Melbourne City, and boasting a game in hand. Based on City’s poor showing against the Mariners earlier in the day, the three-time champions must surely be favourites to hold onto the final spot in the top six.

Despite talking up his side’s form on Friday, the table suggested this would be a battle for the Wanderers, who had lost eight of their nine away games heading into this clash.

Popovic’s much-talked about rotation policy was again enforced with Ante Covic sent to the bench, allowing reserve goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis a rare opportunity between the posts. Attacking midfielder Jashua Sotirio was also given a shot, slotting into the left-hand side.

It was also a reunion with the Wanderers’ former right-back Jerome Polenz, a player who surged down the Parramatta wings with a relentless energy in the first two years.

That battle with the 19-year old Sotirio was the most engaging duel of the first-half, the pair frequently tangling, with Polenz typically treading a fine line at times. Both had their moments and the youngster lost no admirers.

The first-half was played at a tempo perhaps symptomatic of external factors, with both sides coming off draining midweek encounters in the Asian Champions League – the Roar having to come all the way back from Japan after their shock win over Urawa Red Diamonds.

Not helping matters was the combination of a pitch that was badly cut up from back-to-back rugby league and rugby union matches on successive days before.

The best chance of the first half came when Brisbane star Thomas Broich put Jean Carlos Solorzano away and despite a heavy touch he was still able to get away a decent shot that Bouzanis did well to deflect.

Brisbane had more of the possession and chances early but, by the same token, weren’t always as polished as coach Frans Thijssen would have liked. Yet the visitors offered hardly anything in attack, with Sotirio the only outlet of interest.

Both sides were guilty of turning the ball over regularly, although the heat and the pitch condition had plenty to do with the lack of control on either side.

Wanderers’ No.10 Mark Bridge – perhaps labouring from his heavy workload in recent weeks – was taken off at half-time in favour of Yojiro Takahagi as Tony Popovic sought to find a more creative outlet.

However, Brisbane were the ones turning up the heat when the two sides emerged for the second half, Broich and Brattan endeavouring to pin the Wanderers deep in their own half.

Seven minutes after the restart, their reward would come. Polenz caught Sotirio unawares as the Wanderers were trying to play out from defence, and he quickly surged forward before seeing Borrello move into space. The Adelaide-born forward jinked past Nikolai Topor-Stanley all too easily before firing inside the far post.

Borrello could have iced the result after the hour mark when he was clear on goal and decided to chip a bouncing ball over Bouzanis, only to see it loop onto the bar and out of play.

Defender Topor-Stanley had a fine chance thereafter but his header, from Takahagi’s free-kick, was palmed wide by Jamie Young. As the minutes ticked by, Juric’s late chance was as close as the Wanderers would get from an otherwise uninspiring performance.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal believes the FA Cup would be the icing on the cake for his first season in charge – but only if the club have qualified for the Champions League as well.

United take on holders Arsenal at Old Trafford on Monday with an FA Cup semi-final spot at stake as van Gaal targets his first trophy in English football.

Van Gaal is acutely aware however that his over-riding target is finishing in the top four to ensure that United do not suffer the financial and reputational set-backs of another season having to only watch while Europe’s elite clubs battle it out.

The United boss said he agrees with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that securing Champions League football is effectively a trophy.

Van Gaal said: “I want to get always the goals that we have set, and the goals we have set is the top four, and a trophy would be fantastic.

“It’s fantastic for the players and the manager but our role in our first year together is to win a place in the Champions League.

” I think that Arsene Wenger is right – I think that Arsene Wenger is always saying right things – for a club, Champions League is the highest level and that’s why he’s saying that.

“To finish in the first four is a fantastic result and for us at Manchester United even more I think.

“If you win the FA Cup you are not in the Champions League but you have won a title.”

Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini admits United face a “massive game” against Arsenal if they are to end the season with a trophy.

The Belgium midfielder, who was on the losing side at a Wembley FA Cup final with Everton, insists however that Louis van Gaal’s side can take confidence from their last-gap win over Newcastle in midweek.

He says however that United need to win at Old Trafford to avoid a tough replay at the Emirates.

Fellaini told MUTV: “It will be a challenge. Monday is a massive game. We have to win it in one game because playing at Arsenal would be difficult. The FA Cup is a special competition, a big trophy in England. I lost a final. I played in a semi-final. This season, I can win it.

“We have showed spirit already a lot of times now and we have to continue like that. We have a big game on Monday, so it is good for the confidence.

“We always keep going and scored in the last minute [ against Newcastle]. The spirit was good, we kept going and that is important.”

Striker Robin van Persie will miss the clash against his old club due to an ankle injury, and defender Jonny Evans will sit out after he was banned by the FA for six matches for spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse.
