It is an exhausting week to be a Western Sydney Wanderers player, as the club is scheduled to play an absurd two matches in 48 hours thanks to its Asian Champions League and Club World Cup commitments.

The Wanderers pocketed a rare three points against Melbourne City on a stormy Wednesday night and will be hoping they can secure their first consecutive win of the season against title favourites Melbourne Victory. After a series of injuries to key players including Brendon Santalab, Shannon Cole, Brendan Hamill, Mark Bridge and Mateo Poljak, expect Tony Popovic to rotate his squad heavily and blood some younger players for the clash against Victory.

Western Sydney’s horrendous schedule is great news for Melbourne Victory, who is only three points behind league leaders Perth Glory and still in the hunt for the A-League premiership. The Melbourne club’s form has drifted in recent weeks, only able to secure one win in five games. Kevin Muscat and his team will still be stinging from a 1-1 draw from Perth Glory at home last week, particularly after a controversial Andy Keogh goal was awarded to the visiting side; the Irishman appeared to have been in an offside position on replay. The quality of Melbourne Victory’s personnel means anything less than a victory would be unacceptable against the ailing Wanderers.

Key Battle – Besart Berisha vs Ante Covic

The rivalry between this pair started all the way back in Season Eight of the A-League, when the Wanderers came away from Suncorp Stadium with a 2-1 win against Berisha’s former club Brisbane Roar. A rather amusing confrontation broke out between the two players at full time, with Covic blowing the fiery Berisha some ironic kisses.

The Albanian striker has netted nine goals for his new club this season, but has gone almost a month without finding the back of the net. Berisha will be itching to get on the scoresheet, and what better time to start than against one of the A-League’s shakiest defences? The love-hate relationship is all set to continue when Berisha takes to the field tomorrow night, and Covic returns to goalkeeping duties after being benched in the Wanderers’ past two fixtures.

Team News

Making headlines on Wednesday night was the news that Wanderers striker Kerem Bulut has been charged with intimidation by police after an altercation at a McDonald’s restaurant. According to reports, Bulut will be available for selection for the match against Victory, but it remains to be seen whether he will get the nod from his club or Tony Popovic. Matthew Spiranovic will likely resume in central defence at the expense of youngster Jonathan Aspropotamitis. Veteran goalkeeper Covic should return between the goalposts after a two-game absence. Popovic may opt to field some youth in the starting eleven in a bid to rest players for next week’s midweek Asian Champions League match.

The blistering right-winger Kosta Barbarouses will be a huge loss for the Melbourne outfit, but could give veteran Archie Thompson a chance to regain a spot in the starting lineup.

Last Meeting

The Western Sydney Wanderers hosted Melbourne Victory at Pirtek Stadium shortly after the turn of the New Year. The first half was a one-sided affair, with the visitors applying early pressure on the Western Sydney backline. Midfield stalwart Carl Valeri put Victory 1-0 up after a spectacular half-volley but the Wanderers wrestled back the ascendancy after the half time break, and equalised via a long-range strike by debutant Nick Kalmar. However, as has been the tale of the Wanderers’ season, the game was decided by a defensive error, which Finkler gladly pounced on to win the match 2-1 for Melbourne.

Prediction

This could prove a highly entertaining match, with both teams fighting for a result for different reasons. Victory are keen to keep pace in the race for the premiership title, and Western Sydney is desperate to keep itself off the bottom of the table and away from wooden spoon contention. Additionally, it would not be remiss to expect a plethora of goals in this one. The Wanderers have finally found their attacking groove, and have scored eight goals in their last three home matches. As always, Victory’s attacking firepower will put them in a good position to get a few on the scoresheet in Parramatta.

Greece coach Sergio Markarian said last week he wanted Greece to play more attacking football against Hungary in a Euro 2016 qualifier on March 29 as his side strive to move off the bottom position.

“We know it is a very difficult time and we need a big effort, but I believe in the players and the chances that we have. With a good effort and cooperation we will do well,” the 70-year-old Uruguayan coach told a press conference.

Markarian, who was picked to coach the Greeks through the Euro 2016 tournament last month, said that if Greece failed to qualify for the finals in France next year it would be a step backwards after such a good showings from 2002 onwards.

“But we are optimistic and will try our best,” Markarian said. “We want to give the Greeks joy at this difficult time for them.”
Markarian said that in the past Greece had been known for its defensive play, but he wanted the team to be more offensive.

“In the past Greece had a style, good defence and goals in the counter attacks. With time this style has been lost. We must move forward. Good football means good defence and good offence,” the former coach of Peru and Paraguay added.

Markarian said the match with Hungary would be crucial for his side.

“I cannot say if we will win or not, but I am sure with the help of the players we will play good football,” he added.

Greece are bottom of the group, with just one point in four matches. Romania head the table with 10 points followed by Northern Ireland (9), Hungary (7), Finland (4) and Faroe Islands (3).

Nick Kyrgios is in US this week to play in the Indian Wells tournament, starting on March 12.

The 19-year-old has not played since aggravating a back injury during his run to the fourth round of the Australian Open and joins a star-studded field including the entire ATP top 10.

Australia’s top-ranked male player, Kyrgios opted to sit out this weekend’s Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic.

It remains to be seen whether he will be able to line up for the Miami Masters, starting on March 25.

Kyrgios said he is not sure how many tournaments he will play this year.

“No matter how much you train or how much you hit, your body’s not going to allow you to play every week,” he said. “I think you’ve got to be smart, and I’m
just going to go out there now, every time I’m healthy, and have fun with it.”

This year marks the first time Serena Williams will play Indian Wells since winning the California tournament in 2001.

She claimed she suffered racial abuse during her victory over Kim Clijsters in the final 14 years ago.

Neos Kosmos conducted a poll last week, asking our readers whether Greek street festivals in Australia needed a drastic overhaul, and 82 per cent of readers voted yes.

While many praised the festival for its commitment to showcasing the best traditional and cultural aspects of the community, many felt as though the festival had outgrown itself and was in need of new ideas.

One of the most common complaints was the location was no longer suitable.

“At the moment the area allocated is very cramped and uncomfortable,” Esther Kaghelaris-Mikropoulos said.

“We have outgrown Lonsdale Street.”

Angela Vasilakos agreed, saying she doesn’t go anymore because “taking the kids into a crammed city festival isn’t appealing”.

Many have called for the festival to be moved to a bigger location, preferably a large park to better control crowds and give stallholders and performers more room to stretch out.

Director of the Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture and an organiser of the festival, Jorge Menidis, says moving the festival to another location will change the festival’s feel.

“In terms of the festival, I think it changes fundamentally the minute it moves location,” he tells Neos Kosmos.

“Quite frankly, it loses its soul, or the event just becomes another weekend event at, for instance, Federation Square. There are so many of them that they don’t really mean anything.

“Here it’s got a very strong identity.”

He says as long as the Community will be funding it, the festival will be staged on Lonsdale Street.

Others who braved the crowds to go to the festival were annoyed to see more of the same.

“I go every year to support the event and it’s not really that interesting,” Pauline El Horri says.

“The clubs represented do the same thing or similar every year.”

Sophie Koutsoukos agreed and called for new ideas to revamp the festival.

“It needs to have something more appealing and different,” she says.

This year organisers tried hard to include new offerings for festivalgoers, but that mostly fell in the food and drink offerings, not in the stallholder area or the program.

“We specifically went out and targeted other people to come into the festival who wouldn’t normally set up at our festival,” Mr Menidis says.

“We brought 12 new suppliers, mainly in food provisions.”

Many felt that relying on food and the same traditional dancing and music program didn’t properly promote the community’s heritage in the best light.

“Enough of appealing to the lowest common denominator when it comes to Hellenic festivals,” said Jo Kargiotis.

“It’s hard to defend our heritage and promote the interesting things being done by Greeks when all most see is covered in tzatziki.”

Nick Sardis suggested organisers would benefit by adding more Greek theatre performances, more history learning experiences and more traditional costumes.

Mr Menidis says the Community is conscious of the changing interests of festivalgoers and invites anyone with new ideas to come forward and collaborate with the festival.

“We’re conscious of the changing face of the community,” he says. “We welcome any feedback.”

Απίστευτη ανατροπή από την Παρί Σεν Ζερμέν που σε έναν αγώνα «διαφήμιση», κατάφερε να αποκλείσει την Τσέλσι μέσα στο Λονδίνο, οδηγώντας το ματς στην παράταση (1-1) και μάλιστα με 10 παίκτες, αφού από το 32′ είχε αποβληθεί ο Ιμπραΐμοβιτς με απευθείας κόκκινη. Και ενώ οι «μπλε» του Μουρίνιο προηγήθηκαν 2-1 στο 96′, οι Παριζιάνοι δεν το έβαλαν κάτω και στο 114′ ο Τιάγκο Σίλβα ισοφάρισε σε 2-2.

Ο Ολλανδός διαιτητής, Μπγιορν Κάιπερς, ήταν ο αρνητικός πρωταγωνιστής του δεύτερου αγώνα, καθώς με τις αποφάσεις του προκάλεσε (δικαιολογημένα) τον εκνευρισμό των παικτών και των δύο ομάδων. Εξήντλησε την αυστηρότητά του στην φάση του 31ου λεπτού κι έστειλε στ’ αποδυτήρια το Σουηδό στράικερ για το φάουλ που έκανε στον Όσκαρ, ενώ στο 43΄ δεν υπέδειξε καθαρό πέναλτι υπέρ της Τσέλσι σε ανατροπή του Ντιέγκο Κόστα από τον Καβάνι.

Η Παρί, παρότι έπαιζε με 10 παίκτες από το πρώτο μέρος ήταν σαφώς πιο απειλητική από τους «μπλε» και με την εικόνα της, ιδιαίτερα στο δεύτερο μέρος, πήρε δίκαια το εισιτήριο για τους «8», «πετώντας» εκτός το φαβορί μετά την πρώτη αναμέτρηση στο Παρίσι.

Οι Πειραιώτες που την Τρίτη γιόρτασαν τα 90 χρόνια Ιστορίας τους, αποχώρησαν στα αποδυτήρια μαζί με τον διαιτητή, ο οποίος περίπου μισή ώρα αργότερα ανακοίνωσε την οριστική διακοπή του αγώνα που ουσιαστικά σημαίνει και αυτόματη πρόκριση του Ολυμπιακού.

Για περίπου… 89 λεπτά, οι περίπου 65.000 οπαδοί της «Ένωσης» είχαν δημιουργήσει φανταστική ατμόσφαιρα στο ΟΑΚΑ. Στο γήπεδο, όμως, το πρώτο ημίχρονο ήταν η αποθέωση της σκοπιμότητας. Λογικό, αν αναλογιστεί κανείς την κρισιμότητα του παιχνιδιού. Από την άλλη πλευρά, όμως, όλος αυτός ο κόσμος άξιζε κάτι παραπάνω από… ένα σουτ σε ολόκληρο το πρώτο 45λεπτο!

Πάντως, η ΑΕΚ είχε τη μία και μοναδική μεγάλη στιγμή της στο 33′ με εξαιρετική προσπάθεια Γιόχανσον, Πλατέλλα και τον Αραβίδη να είναι έτοιμος να σκοράρει, όμως ο Μποτία πρόλαβε την τελευταία στιγμή. Λίγο αργότερα (39′) είχαμε και το σουτ του Μανιάτη μετά από μεταβίβαση του «Τσόρι», με τη μπάλα να φεύγει πολύ ψηλά άουτ. Ηταν η μοναδική αξιόλογη επιθετική ενέργεια των «ερυθρόλευκων».

Στο μεταξύ, ο Περέιρα είχε αναγκαστεί από νωρίς να αλλάξει τα πλάνα του, λόγω του τραυματισμού του Τζίμι Ντουρμάζ με τη συμπλήρωση του δεκάλεπτου. Ο Σουηδός αποχώρησε, ο Αφελάι μπήκε στη θέση του κι έτσι μετατοπίστηκε ο Ντοσεβί στη δεξιά πτέρυγα.

Με το ξεκίνημα του β’ ημιχρόνου, η ατυχία χτύπησε για δεύτερη φορά τον Ολυμπιακό, όταν αποχώρησε τραυματίας ο αρχηγός του, Γιάννης Μανιάτης.

Στο 55′ ο Ρομπέρτο κράτησε «ζωντανό» τον Ολυμπιακό, όταν απέκρουσε με το πόδι το σουτ του Μάνταλου, σε κλασικό τετ-α-τετ μετά από εξαιρετική πάσα του Πλατέλλα. Στο 58′ νέο σουτ του Μάνταλου φεύγει λίγο άουτ, με την ΑΕΚ να κυριαρχεί και την απουσία του Μανιάτη από το κέντρο να είναι εμφανής.

Στο 67′, όμως, και η ΑΕΚ αναγκάστηκε να συνεχίσει χωρίς τον φυσικό της ηγέτη καθώς ο Πέτρος Μάνταλος έφυγε «λαβωμένος» και αντικαταστάθηκε από τον Ντακόλ

Στο 76′ ο Ολυμπιακός έχασε ευκαιρία από αυτές που… δεν χάνονται. Από κακή εκτέλεση φάουλ της ΑΕΚ οι φιλοξενούμενοι εκδήλωσαν αντεπίθεση με Ντομίνγκες, Φορτούνη, Ντοσεβί και τον τελευταίο να στέλνει τη μπάλα στο δοκάρι και στη συνέχεια στα χέρια του Ανέστη.

Από λάθος έξοδο του γκολκίπερ της Ενωσης, ο Κασάμι προσπάθησε να σκοράρει με κεφαλιά, ομως απομάκρυνε ο Αραβίδης, ενώ στο 85′ σουτ του Ντομίνγκες πέρασε λίγο άουτ.

Η ολοκληρωτική επικράτηση του Ολυμπιακού στα τελευταία 15 λεπτά της αναμέτρησης, επιβραβεύθηκε στο 89′ όταν ο Χάρα έστειλε από κοντά τη μπάλα στα δίχτυα στέλνοντας τον Ολυμπιακό με δραματικό τρόπο στους «4».

Εκεί θα συναντήσει την Ξάνθη και δύο ομάδες της Β’ κατηγορίας, τον Απόλλωνα Σμύρνης και τον Ηρακλή.

* Και ο Ερίκ Αμπιντάλ κοντά στους παλιούς συμπαίκτες του. Ο Γάλλος παρακολούθησε το ματς από το booth του Ολυμπιακού, μαζί με τον Μήτρογλου, τον Ελαμπντελαουϊ, τον Φουστέρ και τους υπόλοιπους “ερυθρόλευκους” που έμειναν εκτός αποστολής.

* Με συμβόλαιο 10.000 ευρώ ετησίως, ο Ανταμ Τζανετόπουλος ίσως είναι ο πιο… χαμηλόμισθος ποδοσφαιριστής που έχει ξεκινήσει στην ενδεκάδα της ΑΕΚ σε ντέρμπι με τον Ολυμπιακό στον 21ο αιώνα.

A Nikita Rukavytsya winner in the dying minutes has delivered Western Sydney Wanderers a 3-2 victory over Melbourne City, their elusive second win of the season finally lifting them off the bottom of the A-League ladder.

The Wanderers fought back twice to level at Parramatta Stadium with a goal from Mateo Poljak and a converted penalty from Tomi Juric cancelling out strikes from City’s Safuwan Baharudin and Aaron Mooy.

But Rukavytsya secured victory deep in injury time for the weary Wanders who had lost their past three games amid a hectic schedule.

City, who were desperate to regain a top-six spot, remain seventh after back-to-back defeats.

With the Wanderers playing their third game in a week and to face title contenders Melbourne Victory on Friday, coach Tony Popovic fielded a vastly changed side to that which lost to Brisbane on Sunday.

After severe passing storms delayed kick off by an hour, it was City who had the better of the opening stages when the action finally got underway.

It seemed only a matter of time before City broke through and Baharudin put them 1-0 up in the 28th minute.

Patric Kisnorbo had his header cleared off the line by Wanderers midfielder Yojiro Takahagi and when the rebound fell to Baharudin he made no mistake.

Poljak found the equaliser in the 38th minute after Labinot Haliti played a great ball into the box.

Juric’s initial shot was blocked before the Croatian midfielder levelled off the rebound.

Juric looked like giving the Wanderers the lead in the 63rd minute with a powerful free-kick but was denied by a great save from City gloveman Tando Velaphi.

The Wanderers began gaining momentum with Juric, who launched onto a great ball by Takahagi, drawing another save from Velaphi.

But just like that City regained the lead a minute later.

Dead-ball specialist Mooy, who was playing his first game at Parramatta Stadium since leaving the Wanderers last season, put City 2-1 up in the 71st minute with an explosive free-kick.

But the Wanderers would level again minutes later when Connor Chapman conceded a penalty for bringing Juric down in the box, the Wanderers striker converting from the spot in the 78th minute.

City ended the game with 10 men after Chapman earned a straight red card for manhandling the referee.

But Rukavytsya would have the final say when his sweet strike in injury-time ensured the three points for Western Sydney.
