Champion’s League:Real Madrid – Juventus preview

images

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been backed to take motivation from fans’ jeers as Los Blancos prepare for Wednesday’s crucial Champions League clash against Juventus.

Sections of the Santiago Bernabeu support appeared to be unhappy with Casillas’ role during Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Valencia, where Real needed two goals in the second half to earn a point.

Indeed, it was the third straight time Madrid had conceded two in a game, following a 3-2 win over Sevilla and the 2-1 defeat to Juventus in the semi-final first leg in Turin.

Unsurprisingly perhaps Casillas had, according to reports in Spain, appeared frustrated with the crowd reaction during the Valencia game but Real boss Carlo Ancelotti is confident his number one will bounce back superbly in what will be his 150th Champions League appearance.

At a press conference for Wednesday’s second leg, the Italian said: “Casillas has a great amount of experience; he’s used to this kind of thing and it doesn’t affect him. In fact, I think it motivates him.

“I’ve said before, sometimes I understand it (jeers) because the players don’t play well. Sometimes you understand it. But I think tomorrow will be different.

“All Madrid fans understand when it’s an important game. Many times in the past they’ve really got behind us, as they did against Atletico (Madrid) and last year in the semi-final they really got behind us, and I’m sure they’ll do so again.”

Madrid will continue to be without Luka Modric but Ancelotti confirmed Karim Benzema will feature at some point as the defending champions seek a return to winning ways at home in the Champions League after their 11-match streak was ended by Schalke in March.

“Benzema is fine,” Ancelotti said. “He’s 100 per cent fit. He needed a little more time to recover but he’s ready.

“He could play from the start or he could come later on. Chicarito (Javier Hernandez) gives us different options but Benzema helps the whole team play better.

“In recent games, in the game against Valencia and Sevilla, the team played very well… but lacked concentration in details and this is the type of thing we must avoid doing.

“We must be focused throughout the whole game to avoid these problems. We need to play with greater intensity than in the first leg.”

Meanwhile, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba could also be in line for an appearance after he made a goalscoring return from a two-month injury lay-off to earn a 1-1 draw against Cagliari on Saturday.

A fourth-straight Serie A title was wrapped up in early May, meaning the Bianconeri’s full focus will be on Wednesday’s second leg, as opposed to Madrid who are still chasing Barcelona in the La Liga table.

Wednesday will also see a return to Madrid of Alvaro Morata, who scored against his former club in the first leg.

But when asked if there were any ill feelings from his Bernabeu exit last summer, the Spaniard was quoted on AS as saying: “I do not have (a grudge) against anyone.

“I am grateful to Ancelotti for giving me so many opportunities to play, including those few minutes in the Champions League final.

“I don’t think I have to prove anything to anyone. I am a Juventus player and I will do my best for the team.”

Manchester United and Chelsea target Cristiano Ronaldo ‘will leave Real Madrid’

cristiano-ronaldo-576777

CRISTIANO RONALDO will leave Real Madrid this summer alongside club captain Iker Casillas.

That’s the belief of former Los Blancos star Agustin Rodriguez, who adds that the duo’s future could be decided in a week’s time.

Ronaldo has been linked with a move back to the Premier League at the end of the season, with former club United and Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea reportedly interested.

Arsenal are also believed to be keeping tabs on Casillas as they search for a new goalkeeper, and Rodriguez is adamant that the pair will be up for grabs as Carlo Ancelotti’s men look to turn things around against Juventus in the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final tomorrow evening.

Rodriguez told Marca: “I think Iker Casillas is going to go, genuinely. And Cristiano too, I’m certain on that. We’ll see in the news that comes out next Wednesday.”

Champion’s League: Bayern – Barcelona 3-2, not enough

_82950019_neymar

Barcelona reached their first Champions League final since 2011, despite Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich salvaging pride in the return leg in Germany.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Bayern revived their hopes through Medhi Benatia’s early downward header.

Barca levelled when Luis Suarez squared for a tap-in from Neymar, who drilled in after the pair combined again.

Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller both curled in as Bayern won on the night, but Barca still progressed.

And the Catalan club’s success means the tantalising prospect of an ‘El Clasico’ showpiece against Real Madrid in the 6 June final in Berlin remains alive.

Their La Liga rivals must overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Italian champions Juventus on Wednesday for the opportunity to defend their European crown against Barca.

Few outsiders had given German title-winners Bayern any chance of overturning the visitors’ advantage after a clinical victory at the Nou Camp last Wednesday.

And ultimately they were proved right as the Spanish league leaders comfortably maintained their ambitions of a La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey treble.

But Bayern were left wondering what might have been after spurning several chances and failing to keep out Barca’s potent attack with some hazardous defending.

Guardiola’s side had made the perfect start through Benatia’s first Champions League goal. The defender was allowed a free header to nod into the bottom left corner from 15 yards.

But the optimism that swept across the vast majority of the Allianz Arena lasted less than eight minutes.

Guardiola, in charge of Barcelona between 2008 and 2012, insisted his team would attack sensibly and patiently as they aimed to become only the second team to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit in a Champions League knockout tie.

However, Bayern were guilty of naive defending as their early lead on the night was wiped out.

Lionel Messi’s perfectly-weighted pass allowed Suarez to run beyond the home defence, before the Uruguayan unselfishly squared for team-mate Neymar to roll in.

Bayern, still encouraged by their vocal fans, continued on the front foot and created several chances which were notably squandered by Muller and Lewandowski.

But the tactic left them vulnerable – and the Bundesliga champions were punished again on the half-hour mark.

The home side were short of numbers defensively as Suarez and Neymar sprung forward, with the former Liverpool striker again teeing up his team-mate who had time and space to chest down and drill into the near corner.

That goal effectively killed off the tie, leaving Bayern needing to become the first team since 1994 to score six times against Barca.

Barca, who need one win from their final two matches to retain the Spanish title, removed Suarez at the break and offered little attacking threat in the second half as Bayern fought back.

Lewandowski showed neat footwork to create space and precisely finish, before Muller guided into the same bottom corner from 20 yards.

But it was too little too late as Barcelona moved within just one more victory of their fifth European crown.

Champion’s League:Bayern v Barcelona preview

imagesVB72EZD4

Few are giving FC Bayern München much hope of overturning a 3-0 defeat by FC Barcelona but Josep Guardiola certainly has not given up – and Luis Enrique knows it.

• Barcelona go into second leg 3-0 up after Lionel Messi-inspired win last Wednesday
• Josep Guardiola says Bayern “can’t do everything in 20–25 minutes”
• Xavi Hernández could become first player to play 150 UEFA Champions League games
• Bayern beat Barcelona 4-0 in Munich at last-four stage two years ago
• Barcelona on verge of first final since Guardiola led them to 2011 title

Possible lineups
Bayern: Neuer; Rafinha, Benatia, Boateng, Bernat; Xabi Alonso; Müller, Lahm, Thiago Alcántara, Götze; Lewandowski.
Out: Badstuber (thigh), Alaba (knee), Robben (calf), Ribéry (ankle)
Doubtful: Rode (hamstring)

Barcelona: Ter Stegen; Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Jordi Alba; Rakitić, Busquets, Iniesta; Messi, Suárez, Neymar.
• Out: none

Josep Guardiola, Bayern coach
We are happy we are in the semi-finals. We are 3-0 down and we are up against the best team of the last 15 years. We have to defend well first and foremost and then see how the game goes. You never know what might happen – for 77 minutes it was 0-0 in Barcelona.

Of course we have to score goals. We have to make use of the few chances we will probably get, but with our ability, the game will show what we can do. We did not expect to win by such big margins against Porto or Shakhtar Donetsk. We have to be patient. We can’t do everything we need to do in 20–25 minutes.

I am happy here and I want to do my best for the club and my players. I have done my best for Bayern from my first day here in Munich. If it is not good enough then I am sorry. It is a dream for me to be here. Of course I want to win this tie, but my life will not change if we do not win.

Everything comes down to the players – I am not fighting for my own reputation, I am here for the players. We are Bayern and I never think we have no chance. It is not a game we cannot win, but we have to use our heads and our hearts.

Luis Enrique, Barcelona coach
Yes, we are the best counterattacking team. If Pep said that, we accept it – we don’t want to have a crazy game. We want to have the ball and create chances, as Bayern will too. We will need to focus on attacking and defending because if we just defend, we have no chance of scoring goals.

You can’t be too confident as you have to respect your opponent, so we will need to keep our players calm. We know how big Bayern are so we will try our best not to allow them too many chances. They will have their fans behind them, so we will try to keep possession and create as much as possible up front.

If we take the lead it will be good for us. However, Bayern have the quality to score and did cause us problems in Barcelona. The common goal is to reach the final. The most important thing is to be motivated; of course we have a very good result from the first leg, but it’s important the players trust themselves.

Bayern will go on the attack and try to create chances – I know what [Guardiola] is going to try to do and I’m looking forward to a really nice game.

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard would have become even better under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea

steven-gerrard

On Sunday you saw the esteem in which Steven Gerrard is held by Chelsea fans. Chelsea and Liverpool may have had their differences, but the standing ovation afford Gerrard as he trooped off the Stamford Bridge turf showed that Blues fans regard him (quite rightly) as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Whenever Gerrard played against Chelsea, everyone at the Bridge viewed him as a key man, the big threat in the opposition ranks. Yes he only scored two goals against Chelsea but he always drove his side on, always engaged Frank Lampard in a tete-a-tete. Bridge fans must often have wondered what it would be like to have the pair of them together.

Of course, Gerrard and Lampard played together many times for England, with no tangible success in terms of major trophies. But, by denying these two midfield titans the assistance of a third man in the centre of the pitch, England wasted them both. Against Costa Rica at the last World Cup, Roy Hodgson was still trying to make it work with Gerrard and Lampard together in midfield, even though both of them like to push forward and they are most effective in the final third of the pitch.

The failure to use Gerrard and Lampard properly, and give the idea of a three-man midfield a proper trial, is a damning indictment of the various managers who have tried and failed to steer England to glory over the past decade. They had two of the best midfielders of their generation, and they didn’t have the tactical acumen to use them.

Jose Mourinho would not have made the same mistake. If he had managed to lure Gerrard to Stamford Bridge a decade ago (and we know it was a very close-run thing), he would have used the Scouse icon in a midfield three, alongside Gerrard and Claude Makelele, a player so good that they named a position after him.

Makelele, sitting in the middle of Gerrard and Lampard, would have been the perfect foil for the two creative fulcrums alongside him. Gerrard and Lampard would have been free to surge forward, to press high up the pitch, to play those decisive final passes. Behind them, they would have had Fort Knox, a player who was 100% reliable and disciplined, who was prepared to sweep up and give them the ball when they wanted it.

With this combination, Chelsea would have won far more than the three league titles they had managed until the start of this season. They would have established an era of dominance, and won the Champions League earlier. Mourinho would have given Gerrard added discipline, told him to focus on his strengths and conserve his energies, and made him an even more effective player.

For Chelsea fans, it’s a shame they never got to see the Gerrard-Lampard combination deployed by a manager who was sufficiently competent to maximise them.

As it is, of course, Gerrard’s Premier League career is at an end. He is arguably the greatest player, and certainly the greatest English player, of his generation never to win a league title. Even his teammate Glen Johnson, a player blessed with just a fraction of Gerrard’s talent, achieved the feat during his time with Chelsea.

But then we can’t really accuse Gerrard of lacking ambition, of wasting his talent, or any of those other barbs which are often aimed at him. There’s something about playing for your hometown club that’s extremely alluring for footballers, even in today’s gilded era, which showers its star performers in cash. Alan Shearer, of course, turned down Manchester United to play for Newcastle, and I doubt he’d swap all the medals he could have won at Old Trafford for the adulation he received at St James’s Park. Gerrard will be the same.

The capitulation of QPR yesterday showed there are far too many mercenaries stealing a living in modern football. And yet when someone like Gerrard makes a career choice based on principle rather than paycheques, we condemn them for being meek, complacent, or worse. You can’t have it both ways.

United need five players (and that’s a conservative estimate)

Manchester United were scrappy once against Crystal Palace, but once again, they found a win. Now they’re in the top four and when you consider the turmoil they endured under David Moyes last season, and the disruption they have endured under David Moyes, that’s got to count as a success.

But United’s board, management, players and fans all know major surgery is needed. I reckon they need five players: a right-back, a centre-back, a midfielder and two strikers. And that’s assuming David De Gea decides to stay.

If you were being super-critical (or ruthless, depending on your state of mind) you’d say they need two new centre-backs, and

two strikers. So the number of players required rises to seven or eight.

United have got their recruitment wrong for years. The signings they have made just haven’t worked, and there’s been more money wasted this year: none of the signings made last summer has become a guaranteed first-team starter, and Daley Blind’s limitations were exposed against Palace.

You might argue United should get canny and try and sign an older player, a Xavi or an Andrea Pirlo, to shore things up next year. The fact that Xabi Alonso is still performing at the highest level after swapping Real Madrid for Bayern Munich demonstrates that there is plenty of value in the market if you go for a high-class player with experience.

But I think United need to rebuild with youth. They need to identify the best young talent out there and forge a new squad. Someone like Harry Kane, as I’ve said before, would be perfect. That’s the calibre of player they require. Van Gaal has made significant strides this season and, with the right transfer strategy in the summer, he can turn United into a force again.

Mitroglou on Fenerbahce radar

mitroglou

Kostas Mitroglou’s season at Olympiakos is coming to an end

Olympiakos loan player Kostas Mitroglou has been linked once again with a move to Fenerbahce.

Signed to Fulham, and on loan to Olympiakos, Mitroglou could be considering a move away from the English club in favour of a more deserving club.

Mitroglou languished at Fulham, where he spent most of time time on the bench or injured.

His period at Olympiakos is set to expire, and while a return to Fulham could be possible, a transfer is more likely.

According to the Turkish newspaper Fotomac, Fenerbahce may also use the Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike as a swap in order to complete the deal with Fulham for Mitroglou.
