Northern NSW National Premier League: Questions over Bates bungle

imagesCAMQMO19

CHARLESTOWN president Shane Tull says he is concerned about the integrity of the Northern NSW National Premier League and FFA Cup after the Guy Bates registration debacle, while Maitland counterpart Chris Rafferty will seek further explanation about the bungle from the governing body.

The two club bosses told the Herald they would contact Northern NSW Football about the revelation on Friday that Bates had played seven NPL matches and two FFA Cup games for Adamstown without securing an international transfer clearance.

NNSWF came across the discrepancy when asked about a clearance for Bates, who was set to return to Northern Ireland after round 12 of the NPL.

A NNSWF investigation found it had incorrectly issued Adamstown a registration for Bates.

It also found a help-desk person had earlier misdirected Bates through Football Federation Australia’s online MyFootball player registration process.

Bates and Adamstown were cleared of any wrongdoing and not penalised, but the former Jets striker was removed from the Rosebud roster.

The Englishman joined Adamstown this season from Northern Ireland first-division club Glenavon, where he remains contracted.

Rafferty said he would write to NNSWF “to seek further explanation” about the registration bungle.

Bates scored and set up Rosebud’s two other goals in a 3-1 win over Maitland in round six.

The Magpies are squarely in the relegation mix, sitting second-last on four points after eight rounds.

“On the face of it, it doesn’t look like a satisfactory outcome,” Rafferty said.

“It could definitely have a negative impact on us in a potential relegation battle.

“We are definitely going to seek an explanation and get to the bottom of it.

“I need to know the details about how it all came about, because I do the registrations for Maitland, I know how the system works and I can’t understand how it could have slipped through the cracks.”

Tull said while Adamstown were not to blame for the mess, the integrity of the NPL and FFA Cup was in question.

Ironically, last-placed Charlestown’s only NPL win came against Bates and Adamstown. However, a Bates-inspired Rosebud did knock Charlestown out of the FFA Cup.

“By anyone’s reckoning Adamstown have fielded an illegal player for seven NPL games and two FFA Cup games, and whether it’s FFA’s or Northern’s fault, this could affect relegation, the finals or the premiership,” Tull said.

He did not believe Adamstown should lose points but said “there should be no negative outcomes for any club as a by-product of a mistake by FFA or Northern NSW Football”.

Hamilton president George Sofianos said his club needed to have further talks about the issue but “what happened is not right”. Olympic had a 2-2 draw with Adamstown.

“It’s against all the regulations Northern have put into place, and they were the ones telling us we had to make sure everyone is cleared,” Sofianos said. “Yet there has been an error somewhere that has been costly to a few clubs.

“It shouldn’t happen and there has to be some sort of discussion with Northern on how this happened and why.”

South Cardiff president James Masters, whose side lost 3-0 to a Bates-less Rosebud last Saturday, said his club “was happy to let it slide”.

“By everything we were told, Adamstown had done everything they were instructed to do and the mistake was beyond their control,” Masters said.

Broadmeadow president Steve Foteff said it was a mess but Adamstown had received written approval from NNSWF for Bates to play and “all clubs would proceed with that in a position of comfort”.

Like Tull, Foteff hoped the oversight would not impact clubs at either end of the table, as was the case in FFA’s finals ban on salary cap cheats Perth Glory.

“At the end of the day we’d all like to ensure this doesn’t affect the finals series or relegation-promotion,” Foteff said. “And that’s what FFA sought to do with Perth, to ensure they finished in no-man’s land. That’s the ideal situation and what should happen, but how do you do that?”

Edgeworth secretary Trevor Van Kemenade said his club had not discussed the issue.

Lambton Jaffas football manager Chris Sneddon said he “sympathises with clubs who had dropped points to Adamstown, like we did, but it is what it is”.

“Hopefully it doesn’t impact on anyone, especially in relegation or the finals series,” Sneddon said.

Weston football manager Shane Johnson could see no other outcome than the course taken by NNSWF.

“From the evidence presented, Adamstown haven’t done anything wrong, so I don’t see how you can take any points off them,” Johnson said.

“We’ve got more reason to complain than the rest of them because they knocked us out of the FFA Cup 6-0 and we had a 0-0 draw with them first NPL game.

“It’s not acceptable what’s happened. Poor administration has allowed this to happen and clubs have been affected, but you can’t take points off Northern or fine them.”

Champions League Final 2015: Barcelona vs. Juventus Preview,

messi-neymar-suarez-celebrate-jpg

Offense is what excites viewers. Offense is what fans will get in the Champions League final with both Juventus and Barcelona featuring a bevy of offensive stars at the peak of their powers.

Which side boasts the better forward group? The answer is not a shocker, but the losing side in this competition is not far off and certainly competent enough to push its team through.

Barcelona

The MSN trio, comprised of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, is the most potent offensive juggernaut in the world. It is as simple as that.

The numbers speak for themselves. The three have combined for a whopping 119 goals this season, the most by any attacking trio in all history. The previous record holders were Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema, who managed 118 goals in 2011-12.

Messi is the leader of the pack with 58 goals and 27 assists this season. He has transformed himself into a player not only capable of finishing and creating but also starting the offense. He has done so by switching himself into a winger to allow Luis Suarez free reign as a forward. The results have been fascinating.

Suarez has been unstoppable as well with 24 goals and 17 assists in 36 games for Barcelona; he scored 31 goals and 12 assists in his big year for Liverpool in 2013-14 in 33 games as the main offensive player of the squad.

Neymar has been having the best year of his life with a stunning 39 goals and seven assists in 44 games for Barcelona.

Juventus

Admittedly, the Italian side does not have as potent an offense as Barcelona does. The team scored just 72 goals in Italian competitions, and none of its forwards scored more than 30 goals on the year.

That said, the team possesses some lethal options up front with Carlos Tevez undeniably being the main man. The Argentine scored 20 goals in the domestic league but managed 29 in all competitions as well as eight assists.

After him the team has two major options to use. Fernando Llorente is a big body capable of doing damage in the air. He scored nine goals and one assist in 39 games this year. Not imposing numbers, but he is capable of opening up space for Tevez with his large frame.

He will likely see the bench however as Alvaro Morata gets the nod. The 22-year-old has scored 14 goals and five assists in 40 games for Juventus. He is not a hulking presence but he holds the ball better than Llorente and is more capable of making key passes to Tevez. His finesse will be more vital against a Barcelona team that will likely retain possession throughout the match.

By the numbers

Barcelona’s trio has scored 119 goals on the year; Juventus’ trio maxed out at less than half that number with 52 goals on the year. Barcelona’s MSN has produced 51 assists on the year; Juventus’ trio produced 14 assists.

Edge:  Isn’t it obvious? Having Messi alone would make Barcelona’s offense superior to Juventus’ respectable corps. But Neymar and Suarez make this arguably the greatest attacking trio in the history of the game.

Blatter, have you ever taken a bribe?’ The beginning of the end for FIFA president

ANDREW Jennings calls it “the best day of all”.

After a decade on the trail of Sepp Blatter and FIFA corruption, the FBI finally knocked on his door.

The British journalist, who was once told to “go f**k yourself” by former FIFA vice president Jack Warner, has written books and made documentaries about the sporting body’s controversies. His investigations helped trigger last week’s arrests of FIFA executives — including Warner — busting wide open one of sport’s biggest scandals.

That in turn led to the dramatic resignation overnight of FIFA’s embattled president Sepp Blatter. Speaking to ABC’s Lateline just hours before Blatter quit, Jennings recalled the moment he first laid eyes on Blatter — and challenged him directly.

“Well, it’s all about technique, really. I’d done years on the International Olympic Committee and the corruption there and I realised: just up the road is FIFA and the smell was drifting my way.

“So I went to one of Sepp Blatter’s press conferences, knowing that … he doesn’t say anything very interesting, but the nice suited reporters (would always) write it down.

“And I got hold of the radio mike for the Q & A, right at the beginning, grabbed it, stared at him and said, “Herr Blatter, have you ever taken a bribe?”

The question sent shock waves through the FIFA hierarchy. Not just because Jennings had referred to the all-powerful football boss as “Herr Blatter’ instead of “President”, but because it sent a signal to those who held FIFA secrets that he was a willing ear if they wanted to speak out.

“That was deliberate because, you see, either side of the room were all these robotic FIFA employees: the women fed up with being felt up, the men worrying about their bonuses. These were the people with the (computer) servers, the filing cabinets. They’d got the documents and I needed to get them to trust me.”

It didn’t take long before the information began to flow Jennings’ way. And from then on it was only a matter of time.

“That got me in to FIFA corruption.”

Jennings is the author of ‘Omerta: Sepp Blatter’s FIFA-Organised Crime Family’. He likens FIFA to the Mafia characters he’s previously investigated in his career.

“Basically, what you’ve got coming down from the top is the licence to steal, which all capo bosses have to give, all gang bosses have to give their lieutenants,” he said.

“And what you’ve got coming down is unaudited million-dollar development grants, no auditors so the guys can just steal – they were the voters, by the way, last last Friday – and also a whole fistful of World Cup tickets which come under the table and are then sold into the black market.”

Jennings’ work caught the attention of the FBI, which sent “serious-looking Americans with broad shoulders who had been in the Marines” to visit him at his home in London in 2009.

“And that’s been the best day of all, because then I knew they were serious professionals and understanding of the structures of organised crime and they wanted to talk about FIFA’s structures,” he told Lateline.

“So I knew back in 2009 it was going to start to roll. And I initially described to them how FIFA worked: who the personalities were, all the senior people. We developed from there.”

Last night, Jennings predicted Blatter was “dead meat.”

“I mean, Blatter has been a micromanager since 1976. And, in fact, if you look at the criminal indictment there are things coming up that he had to know about. But he is a dead man walking.”

But his criticism doesn’t stop with Blatter. Jennings also has the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) in his sights, using the interview to call on Frank Lowy to resign, saying Australia “has been shafted”.

“He’s led Australian football into disaster,” Jenning said.

He alleged FIFA “looked the other way” when bribes were being paid to FIFA executives, including $500,000 that found its way into former executive Jack Warner’s private bank account.

“I’m not saying Frank Lowy and Ben Buckley said, ‘Hey, how do we bribe Warner?’ I’m not saying that happened. But a brilliant businessman like Frank Lowy … has he never heard of auditors?”

For Blatter though the problems could only be beginning. He has vowed to stay on as FIFA head until new elections in December but ABC News (US) reports this morning he is being investigated by the FBI and US prosecutors as part of the same probe that led to his colleagues’ arrests last week.

Liverpool FC manager given go-ahead to revive Anfield club’s fortunes after holding pivotal talks with Fenway Sports Group to explain poor season .

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been given the go-ahead to revive his and the club’s fortunes next season following talks with his hierarchy.

Rodgers met chairman Tom Werner and Fenway Sports Group President Michael Gordon on Tuesday where – as expected – the primary focus was how to reshape the side to achieve his targets next season, formulating a ‘comprehensive plan for improvement’. After two hours of talks it was confirmed Rodgers remains in charge, although it remains to be seen if there will be any changes to personnel behind the scenes.

Beyond the clarity on Rodgers’ position, no details regarding Liverpool’s plan of action have been revealed at this stage, but the club wants to return to the Champions League and get back to the stylish, attacking football that led to a title challenge in 2014. Rodgers will certainly be backed with several new signings in order to achieve those ambitions.

Brendan Rodgers had to explain Liverpool’s difficult season

The conversations with Werner – who flew to England on Monday – have been described as ‘positive, good and productive’ with Liverpool reiterating Rodgers’ position as manager was never on the agenda – the club has delivered that message consistently despite a disappointing campaign.

Rodgers spoke openly after Liverpool’s calamitous final day to defeat to Stoke City, admitting it was inevitable serious questions would be asked about his role, but even then his bosses moved to quell suggestions the outcome of an end-of-season review would end in dismissal.

Privately, club sources persistently dismissed claims Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti were under consideration to replace Rodgers.

Brendan Rodgers faces a battle to keep hold of Raheem Sterling

Although Rodgers will have faced some difficult questions regarding Liverpool’s underperformance, the will remains to see him continue and develop as a coach at Anfield.

Rodgers can now press ahead securing reinforcements with deals for James Milner and Danny Ings agreed in principle. Providing there are no late hitches, both will officially join the club on July 1.

Liverpool will also try to secure the signatures of Christian Benteke and Nathaniel Clyne, but are braced for a summer of resisting several bids for winger Raheem Sterling.

Werner has several departmental meetings to attend for the rest of the week, ahead of attending the Premier League shareholders meeting in London this Thursday.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter resigns, calls new elections

FIFA President Sepp Blatter will resign from football’s governing body amid a widening corruption scandal and has promised to call for fresh elections to choose a successor.

The 79-year-old Blatter was re-elected to a fifth term on Friday, two days after a corruption crisis erupted and seven soccer officials were arrested in Zurich ahead of the FIFA congress.

ABC News reports that that Blatter is being investigated by the FBI and U.S. prosecutors as part of the probe that led to last week’s stunning indictments.

“Now that people are going to want to save themselves, there’s probably a race to see who will flip on [Blatter] first,” one source said, explaining how the feds typically try to get people to inform on their superiors.

“We may not be able to collapse the whole organization but maybe you don’t need to,” one of the sources said.

“This mandate does not seem to be supported by everybody in the world of football,” Blatter said Tuesday at a hastily arranged news conference. “FIFA needs a profound restructuring.”Elections are expected to take place sometime between December and March.

“I will continue to exercise my function (until the new election),” Blatter said.

Blatter said he reached the decision after he “thoroughly considered my presidency and … (about) the last 40 years in my life.”

“I have thoroughly thought about my presidency and the 40 years FIFA- has played in my life. I love Fifa more than anything else and I only want to do the best. I decided to stand again for election for the good of football,” he said.

Blatter’s shock resignation as FIFA president was hailed as ‘great for football’ by one of his chief critics, English FA chief Greg Dyke.Dyke, who told BBC World he lost faith in Blatter last year, said he thought the 79-year-old Swiss realised the mounting corruption scandal that has engulfed world football’s governing body ‘was getting close to him’.

Jordanian Prince Ali bin al Hussein will stand in new elections after failing in his bid last week to oust Blatter.

“As for new elections, Prince Ali is ready,” Sala Sabra, vice-president of the Jordanian football federation which the prince heads up, told AFP.

The prince, Sabra added, was also ready “to take up the presidency immediately if they ask him”.

The prince had already earned Australia’s support prior to last week’s vote.

“The vote secured by Prince Ali was not insignificant and reflects a belief within FIFA and the world football community that governance and other reforms need to be implemented as soon as possible,” FFA chairman Frank Lowy said in a statement after the vote.

Blatter joined FIFA in 1975 as technical director for development projects, was promoted to general secretary in 1981 and spent 17 years as right-hand man to Joao Havelange of Brazil before being elected to lead world soccer.

The new election will be overseen by Domenico Scala, chairman of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee.

Scala gave a statement immediately after Blatter in which he praised a decision that was “difficult and courageous in the current circumstances.”

“This is the most responsible way to ensure an orderly transition,” Scala said.

Read a full transcript of Sepp Blatter’s statement:

I have been reflecting deeply about my presidency and about the 40 years in which my life has been inextricably bound to Fifa and the great sport of football. I cherish Fifa more than anything and I want to do only what is best for Fifa and for football. I felt compelled to stand for re-election, as I believed that this was the best thing for the organisation. That election is over but Fifa’s challenges are not. Fifa needs a profound overhaul.

While I have a mandate from the membership of Fifa, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football – the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at Fifa. Therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress. I will continue to exercise my functions as Fifa President until that election. The next ordinary Fifa Congress will take place on 13 May 2016 in Mexico City. This would create unnecessary delay and I will urge the Executive Committee to organise an Extraordinary Congress for the election of my successor at the earliest opportunity. This will need to be done in line with Fifa’s statutes and we must allow enough time for the best candidates to present themselves and to campaign. Since I shall not be a candidate, and am therefore now free from the constraints that elections inevitably impose, I shall be able to focus on driving far-reaching, fundamental reforms that transcend our previous efforts.

For years, we have worked hard to put in place administrative reforms, but it is plain to me that while these must continue, they are not enough. The Executive Committee includes representatives of confederations over whom we have no control, but for whose actions Fifa is held responsible. We need deep-rooted structural change. The size of the Executive Committee must be reduced and its members should be elected through the Fifa Congress. The integrity checks for all Executive Committee members must be organised centrally through Fifa and not through the confederations. We need term limits not only for the president but for all members of the Executive Committee. I have fought for these changes before and, as everyone knows, my efforts have been blocked.

This time, I will succeed. I cannot do this alone. I have asked Domenico Scala to oversee the introduction and implementation of these and other measures. Mr Scala is the Independent Chairman of our Audit and Compliance Committee elected by the Fifa Congress. He is also the Chairman of the ad hoc Electoral Committee and, as such, he will oversee the election of my successor. Mr Scala enjoys the confidence of a wide range of constituents within and outside of Fifa and has all the knowledge and experience necessary to help tackle these major reforms. It is my deep care for Fifa and its interests, which I hold very dear, that has led me to take this decision. I would like to thank those who have always supported me in a constructive and loyal manner as President of Fifa and who have done so much for the game that we all love. What matters to me more than anything is that when all of this is over, football is the winner.

Hamilton Olympic defeat Charlestown 4-2 and climb to the top of the NPL

HAMILTON OLYMPIC

Hamilton Olympic downed Charlestown City 4-2 on a wet Darling St Oval to climb to the top of the NPL table.

Proceedings began in the 10th minute when Simon Mooney, with only the City keeper to beat, fired a shot into the hands of Kyle Predebon.

Four minutes later, a well taken shot by midfield ace Jacob Bailey opened the score for the home side.

Olympic continued to test the City goal time after time and against the run of play, a shot by Jared Ross deflected off an Olympic defender to end up at the back of Danny Ireland’s goal 1-1!

Olympic continued the pressure and a lovely through ball by Mathew Swan found Simon Mooney who had no problem putting the ball in the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

Simon Mooney then returned the favour with a pin point cross to the head of Mathew Swan who added a third for Olympic. The teams went into half time with Olympic leading 3-1.

Olympic continued the second half from where they left off the first. In the 55th minute Jacob Bailey was at the end of a simple tap-in to make the score 4-1.

In the 77’ minute Ben Hughes executed a free kick for City which struck Danny Ireland’s crossbar and as the ball re-bounded, Scott Smith tapped it in to reduce the score to 4-2.

Charlestown City was reduced to 10 men when Cameron Sullini brought down Pat Brown, who was on his way with only the keeper to beat. Despite a late fight back by City, the score remained 4-2.

Overall an entertaining game of football in wet conditions and a result which brings Hamilton Olympic in 1st spot of the NPL ladder.
