No thought of Socceroos snubbing Bangladesh clash

Australia’s national team may be at loggerheads with Football Federation Australia (FFA) over the stalled Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) but any suggestions of boycotting Thursday night’s World Cup qualifier against Bangladesh have been quashed.

Professional Footballer Australia chief Adam Vivian said there was no way the Socceroos would not take to the field at nib Stadium in Perth despite the ongoing dispute with the governing body.

Coach Ange Postecoglou’s 23-man squad followed through on its pledge to boycott commercial activities in Perth this week ahead of Thursday’s duel against 170th-ranked Bangladesh, in a show of solidarity with its A-League brethren and the Matildas over what the players perceive as the peak body’s intransigence over fraught negotiation over a new CBA.

However, Socceroos stars were adamant they won’t let the on-going row over player pay dilute their commitment to the looming match against Bangladesh and then Tajikistan on 8 September.

The gun duo of Mathew Leckie and Massimo Luongo insisted that the industrial action would not find its way onto the field and was far from a distraction as they seek to milk more points on the road on the road to Russia 2018.

Jose Mourinho criticises Chelsea board for failing to secure targets in wake of Crystal Palace defeat

jose_3423990b

Mourinho has been left frustrated by Chelsea’s failure to sign a defender Photo: AP

The manager is approaching something of a crossroads after losing his 100th league home game, with his club in the bottom half of the table.

Crisis at Chelsea or not, Jose Mourinho is approaching a crossroads for the first time since the manager returned two summers ago to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday was neither undeserved nor surprising for those who have seen the Eagles soar since Alan Pardew took over, with 10 victories in 12 away games since his appointment in January.

Palace are now in the top three after this third win of the season, secured by goals from Bakary Sako and Joel Ward either side of Radamel Falcao’s headed strike.

Palace took three months not three weeks last season to reach nine points and spent the first half of the season in the relegation zone. Chelsea, on the other hand, made a flying start to their title-winning season, with four successive victories, 16 wins in their first 21 games and no defeat until December.

Now Chelsea are in the bottom half of the table, have already lost twice and their total of 10 goals conceded in the first four games is their worst record since 1971.

Too many of Mourinho’s big players are underperforming, as he acknowledged after this defeat, only his second at home in 100 Premier League games. Cesc Fàbregas and Nemanja Matic were outfought and out-thought by Yohan Cabaye and Jason Puncheon in the heart of midfield; Eden Hazard and Willian were anonymous by comparison with their counterparts Sako and substitute Yannick Bolasie.

Damien Delaney, who was signed for free three years ago, as was Sako this summer, led Palace’s defence superbly, while Chelsea’s defence, bereft of the suspended John Terry, looked all at sea.

Mourinho has failed to secure the two central defenders he wanted to sign, Everton’s John Stones and Aymen Abdennour, who has joined Valencia from Monaco. Chelsea’s manager must now decide whether to find alternatives before the transfer deadline tomorrow, stick with the old guard, or bring in new blood to replace his established but misfiring stars.

He risked upsetting the club’s hierarchy with his thinly veiled criticism that they failed to deliver all the targets he proposed to them four months ago. When asked if he would make more signings, the manager said: “I hope not. I gave the club my report on the season’s projections on April 21. I don’t want to go now in August and say: ‘I want this and that.’ We have to do better, me and the players.”

Mourinho also made it clear that he would not simply wait for his star names to rediscover the form of last season. “You have players who have fantastic seasons and fantastic moments and the next season do not have the same. If you ask me will I accept this, sit in a nice chair and wait calmly for the performance level to be back, the answer is no. I have to work, react, analyse and if I feel the players are not in conditions to react and give more, I have to make changes. I have never had a problem with that.”

The Portuguese did not mention Hazard by name but said: “If you are the best in the league, it should be your responsibility to have a similar season to the previous one.

“It is difficult to have a consistent team performance when some of the players are not performing. When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent.”

The Chelsea manager exonerated Kurt Zouma, who filled in for Terry, and fellow youngsters Kenedy and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, whose introduction as substitutes added an urgency and directness that the team had been lacking. Mourinho said: “I have beautiful young eggs in Kenedy, Ruben, Zouma and they did well. I am not saying they are ready to play every game for 90 minutes, but these young guys have very good talent.”

More than anything, Mourinho is conscious that complacency can set in after winning the title, as happened at Manchester City in 2012 and 2014. The prospect appals him. “If this is real, it is very sad. Because I feel the opposite. When I win, I want to win again, I want to win more. I feel fantastic motivation for more. If you win it one season and the next you are not on fire, not ready to fight for more, that is sad. My medal is at home, in a drawer.”

Palace have that hunger which Mourinho wants to see. Pardew’s starting eleven cost around £40 million, less than a fifth of the £208 million in fees Chelsea paid for their team, with Mourinho’s substitutes costing another £60  million.

Most of the Palace squad have cut their teeth in the lower divisions and are making the most of their time in the spotlight, none more so than Delaney, who came out on top of his physical scrap with Diego Costa. “Yes, it’s been a while since I had that, a good old-fashioned League Two battle,” the Irishman said. “I spent a lot of my career in the lower leagues, raised on battling with big, bruising centre forwards – obviously Costa’s a good player too – so I enjoyed that.”

Liverpool news: Brendan Rodgers again under pressure after West Ham defeat – and Manchester United are next

rodgers_3423924b

An unbeaten start to the League and three consecutive clean sheets counted for little as Rodgers was harangued for losing to Slaven Bilic’s men.

The relationship between a football club, the managers and supporters is rather like the love affair between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. At its most fulfilling, smiling cupids applaud every gesture. Give it a few weeks and you have emotional wreckage and calls for another divorce.

Take West Ham United, for instance. Their supporters left the Emirates Stadium and Anfield this season hailing the transformation of their side under Slaven Bilic, two of the most fashionable clubs disrobed with classic away wins. Then you get back to the Boleyn Ground, lose against Bournemouth or Leicester City, and the East End air is lovesick for the era of Sam Allardyce.

Brendan Rodgers is as vulnerable as any Premier League manager to the weekly turbulence.

Rodgers returned to the supposed haven of Anfield armed with an unbeaten record, three clean sheets and four points from notoriously difficult venues. But Saturday afternoon proved that no matter how many encouraging performances he oversees, it will only take an abject one to stir the torments.

In 90 minutes, a month of assessments presenting a more robust Liverpool were hastily revised, with the caveat that they will be dusted back down and recommissioned if the club win at Old Trafford in a fortnight’s time.

It was not just a single rancid display that alarmed The Kop, but the return of characteristics that polluted the past 12 months.

The response to going two goals down via Manuel Lanzini and Mark Noble was panic-stricken and ill-disciplined, culminating in Philippe Coutinho’s daft dismissal for two cautions. The game plan fine-tuned in pre-season was dismantled at half-time when Rodgers opted to play three centre-halves. Players who thought they were waving goodbye, such as Lucas Leiva, were called back from the departure lounge and selected in a fixture that does not suit them – probably to prevent a deadline-day move. The defence was fragile and shapeless and the attack was limp.

The only comfort at full-time was the promise of Daniel Sturridge’s imminent return from injury, even though history shows the perils of expecting him to play more than two thirds of a campaign.

Chief culprit in a defensive collapse was a player who had excelled in those first three matches: Dejan Lovren. His woe served only to mobilise and embolden the Mamadou Sakho fan club within and outside Anfield. The Croatian’s chief ally post-match was Bilic, who suggested that Lovren looked confused by the idea of leading others rather than focusing solely on his own game. “I put him in the Croatia team when he was very young. I know him best,” Bilic said.

“When he’s concentrated and thinking only about his own game, not about the left-back or whoever is alongside him, there are very few centre-halves who are better than him. One mistake anyone can do but if you are telling me that Liverpool lost because of Dejan Lovren then no, no, no, no, no. It wasn’t down to him. I’m not objective about him because I like him. It was a mistake but a lot of Liverpool players made mistakes.

“He can be a strong person but if you get kicked in the head every day then it’s hard to stay strong. He was great against Arsenal. It is all down to confidence.”

Bilic name-checked another compatriot, Luka Modric, in praise of Lanzini – a loan signing from the United Arab Emirates side Al Jazira. “When he came in some of the people said he looks more like a jockey than a football player,” Bilic said. “Maybe, but he rides the challenges. In that respect he reminds me of Luka.”

Diafra Sakho sprinkled extra stardust with a third just before full‑time, but Rodgers has greater issues than his perennially unreliable centre-backs. His habit of embracing the drawing board at the first hint of trouble is starting to smack of uncertainty rather than ingenuity. Winning ugly has its place, but when the attractive football has been absent for so long, grotesqueness is magnified in a defeat.

The rush to conclude exactly what this Liverpool team will eventually become – or even what it is meant to be – is increasingly confusing. Four games in, this incarnation of a meaner, tougher team that is able to grind out the victories took a hammering.

It is 52 years since West Ham won at Anfield. The last time they did it, Bill Shankly’s Liverpool ended the season as champions. It is a fair assumption that Manuel Pellegrini will not be shifting uncomfortably in his chair this year.

West Ham destroy Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield

_85263835_lanzini_reuters

West Ham won their first league match at Anfield since 1963 and inflicted a first loss of the season on Liverpool in a game featuring two red cards.

The Hammers produced a masterclass of counter-attacking football, with Manuel Lanzini impressing on his debut.

He scored the first and set up the second for Mark Noble, who became the second player sent off after Philippe Coutinho was red carded for Liverpool.

Diafra Sakho added a third for West Ham in injury time.

They were the first goals of the season conceded by Liverpool, whose defence was a shadow of the one that had impressed against Stoke, Bournemouth and Arsenal.

Liverpool have been rightly praised for the way their defence has performed to keep clean sheets in each of the first three Premier League games of the season.

However, the Reds’ back four will deservedly be pilloried for their display against the Hammers.

Martin Skrtel’s poor clearing header from a cross allowed Cresswell to pick the ball up and cross low for Lanzini to finish from close range to give the Hammers the lead.

Even worse was the dreadful mess made of a simple clearance by Dejan Lovren, who mis-controlled on his own byeline and allowed Lanzini to nip in and provide the half-cleared cross from which Noble followed up to slot in the second goal.

The moment made a mockery of the pre-match praise heaped on the £20m defender by Brendan Rodgers – who switched to a three-man defence in the second half to little effect, with Sakho punishing them a third time for hesitancy at the back.

Liverpool’s calamitous defending should not take away from West Ham’s counter-attacking excellence, particularly in the first half.

In contrast to the diamond midfield utilised in the away win at Arsenal on opening day, the Hammers matched Liverpool’s 4-3-3, but used the system to much better effect.

A committed and disciplined back four was protected superbly by the energetic trio of Pedro Obiang, Cheikhou Kouyate and Noble, allowing Dimitri Payet and Lanzini in particular the freedom to do damage in the Liverpool half, while Sakho led the line superbly.

Lanzini’s debut showcased a willingness to pick up the ball deep and drive forward at pace and also an eagerness to work for the team by closing down opponents to force mistakes – something he did to optimum effect for the second goal.

In contrast, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino, brought in from £29m in the summer, was a peripheral figure and was substituted after an hour.

The Brazilian was not the only Reds player to underperform, though, with Lovren’s 55th-minute shot – easily saved by Darren Randolph – their only one on target during.

Already trailing 2-0, Liverpool’s challenge was effectively ended by the sending off of Coutinho – an outcome the Brazil midfielder could easily have avoided.

His first booking came from an indefensible lack of discipline as he failed to retreat from a free-kick, meaning any mis-timed tackle – like the one he produced on Payet in the 51st minute – left him vulnerable.

Not only did it cost Liverpool a realistic chance at getting something from this game but it means Rodgers will now have to cope without one of his best players, including in their next game against Manchester United.

There was a hint of controversy to Noble’s straight red card, shown for violent conduct as a result of his lunging challenge on Danny Ings.

However, the whistle had already blown for a foul on Noble, which does not take away from his offence but does mean it came when play was not active.

Fortunately for him and his side, it came too late in the game to give Liverpool a chance to come back.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic: “We played really good and started well. We were well organised. We had a plan, but the boys perfectly did that plan. Their movement, concentration and aggression was 90% of the game.

“We parked the bus but we didn’t put the handbrake on. There is nothing wrong with that. It means when the opponent has the ball you stop them. When needed we were there with nine men but when we had the chance we had players in their part of the pitch.

“With the greatest respect to the official, Mark Noble’s sending off is not a red card.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers: “We’re disappointed with the result. We came into the game with a motivation to win but we give away a poor goal and you have to give credit to West Ham.

“We didn’t defend moments well at all. We didn’t have too many times to defend but when we did it wasn’t how we’ve been. Offensively we weren’t creative enough. We need to be much better than that.

“I didn’t think Coutinho was a sending off and neither was the one for Noble.”

What next?
Liverpool travel to Manchester United after the international break for a clash between two sides with top-four ambitions. United are at Swansea on Sunday and a win would leave them three points above Liverpool.

West Ham will hope to halt a run of two straight home defeats with a match against Newcastle at Upton Park.

Socceroos: Mile Jedinak ruled out as Socceroos forced to make changes

Australia skipper Mile Jedinak is out of the Socceroos FIFA World Cup qualifying clashes against Bangladesh and Tajikistan after failing to recover from a hamstring injury in time for the trip to Perth.

Jedinak was due to fly out of the UK on Sunday to meet up with the squad, but a hamstring injury while playing for Crystal Palace in the League Cup has put an end to his involvement.

“Mile picked up a hamstring injury that will keep him out for a short period of time so he won’t be making the trip for the games against Bangladesh and Tajikistan,” Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou revealed today.

Jedinak is joined by Tomi Juric and Robbie Kruse on the sidelines and the trio will be replaced by Italian based attacker Chris Ikonomidis, striker Ben Halloran and Brisbane Roar midfielder Luke Brattan.

“Tomi (Juric) and Robbie (Kruse) have had recent injuries and after speaking to our medical staff we believe they are better served staying with their clubs to regain match fitness and not undertake the travel so they are available for matches in the next window,” Postecoglou added.

“It gives Chris, Ben and Luke Brattan a great opportunity to come into the group and impress.

“The players will start arriving into Perth on Sunday night as we prepare for two important matches during this stage of World Cup Qualification.”

Panathinaikos dumped out of Europe

article1983_w_hr

Athens club knocked out by a team from Azerbaijan formed just ten year ago

Supporters of Panathinaikos are calling for the immediate resignation of coach Yiannis Anastasiou after their side was eliminated from the Europa League by a club from Azerbaijan that was established just ten years ago.

A 2-2 draw in Athens on Thursday saw Azerbaijani side Qabala go through on the away goals rule.
PAO fans begun chanting against Anastasiou, almost all the players and club president Yiannis Alafouzos.

Qabala opened the scoring in just the sixth minute when a Dodô headed home from very close range to the bottom left corner following a corner.

PAO equalised in the 34th minute through their star player, Swedish striker Marcus Berg, whose left footed shot from the centre of the box went into the top left corner.

Dodô then scored his second of the night to put Qabala back in the lead as his right footed shot from the centre of the box flew into the top right corner.

PAO then grabbed one back through Nano González in the 78th minute when his right footed shot from outside the box found the net following a set piece situation.

That set up a frantic final ten minutes but PAO was unable to find the winning goal and was eventually booed off the field by the home supporters.

In Denmark, Thessaloniki club PAOK drew 1-1 with local side Brondby, giving PAOK a 6-1 win on aggregate.
In front of just 6630 supporters Brondby never looked like threatening PAOK’s commanding first leg 5-0 lead.

PAOK went ahead through a first half header by Ricardo Costa, only for Brondby to draw level through Elba Rashani, who capitalised on an error by PAOK’s goalkeeper.

In Istanbul Turkish club Fenerbahce defeated Atromitos 3-0 in the second leg of the Europa League qualifiers to go through 4-0 on aggregate.

The Brazilian striker Fernandao scored two goals. The third was an own goal by the Belarusian goalkeeper Andrey Gorbunov.
That leaves PAOK and Asteras Tripolis as the only two Greek sides in the Europa League this season.
