Laurent Blanc’s side, unbeaten in all competitions this season, made it two wins out of two in Group A. Serge Aurier – on his competition debut – and David Luiz struck in the first half before a late own goal added gloss to the scoreline.

Malmö 0-2 Real Madrid
Cristiano Ronaldo racked up his 500th senior career goal in the first half and then drew level with Raúl González on 323 for the Merengues alone, equalling the club’s all-time scoring record.

Manchester United 2-1 Wolfsburg
Though Daniel Caligiuri’s fourth-minute goal put United – beaten by PSV Eindhoven on matchday one – on the back foot, the Premier League leaders railled and prevailed through Juan Mata’s penalty and Chris Smalling’s close-range finish.

CSKA Moskva 3-2 PSV Eindhoven
Seydou Doumbia scored two inside the first 36 minutes – after Ahmed Musa’s early opener – but then missed a penalty. He was nearly made to pay, PSV pulling two back through Maxime Lestienne yet still falling short.

Group C
Astana 2-2 Galatasaray
Astana, hosting Kazakhstan’s first ever group stage game, trailed twice but ultimately picked up a point courtesy of two own goals in the closing 14 minutes.

Atlético Madrid 1-2 Benfica
The visitors recorded their first victory against Spanish opposition since 1982 – despite going behind midway through the first half. Nicolás Gaitán and Gonçalo Guedes were on the mark for the Eagles.

Group D
Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2 Manchester City
Manuel Pellegrini’s side were yet another team to come from behind and collect three points. They left it a little later than most, Sergio Agüero keeping his nerve from the penalty spot in the last minute of normal time.

Juventus 2-0 Sevilla
Last season’s runners-up continue to struggle in Serie A but have no such problems in Europe. Álvaro Morata netted for the fifth straight UEFA Champions League match and substitute Simone Zaza got in on the act late on.

“Legend! Ecstasy! The Triumph of Triumphs!” were among the headlines in the Greek media on Wednesday as the nation basked in the glory of Olympiakos Piraeus’s stunning 3-2 win at Arsenal in the Champions League.

Olympiakos, whose nickname is ‘The Legend,’ recorded their first win on English soil in 50 years, benefiting from a woeful mistake by Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina but running out worthy winners to seal their first points in Group F.

Goal News led the tributes to the Greek champions after their 12 previous visits to England had ended in defeat, declaring: “Olympiakos was magical in London, bringing Arsenal to its knees and stunning the planet!”

Sport Day followed suit, stating: “You loved it, we loved it; a massive victory for Greek soccer!”

According to Argentine midfielder Esteban Cambiasso, the secret to Olympiakos’s success, thanks to Felipe Pardo, an Ospina own goal and halftime substitute Alfred Finnbogason, was simple – Marco Silva’s team came to The Emirates without any fear.

“We came to Arsenal to play our soccer and that was our secret; we tried to do things we wanted from the outset to do and not just come to play defensively to try and contain Arsenal,” he said.

“We played our normal aggressive attacking game and scored three goals which is not easy away from home in this competition,” added Cambiasso. “Olympiakos has learned to suffer and we as players learned that we need to sacrifice certain things for each other. It’s a huge victory for the whole team.”

Although Greeks are celebrating a historic win, things might well have been different this season.

Olympiakos’s place in the Champions League came into question over the close season when club owner Vangelis Marinakis was the subject of investigations into a match-fixing scandal.

Marinakis was banned from active roles in soccer in June and had to report to police every 15 days on strict bail terms.

He is accused of being involved in and directing a criminal organization as well as aiding and abetting blackmailing, extortion, bribery and fraud.

Despite the probe, which could take years to get to trial – if it goes to trial – European soccer’s governing body UEFA announced in June that Olympiakos’s Champions League place was not in danger while issuing a firm warning.

“There are investigations in Greece (and) the situation could change…. as we all know, this kind of investigation can take some time, we need to have some clear evidence,” UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino said at the time. “I think our bodies have shown they are very firm when it comes to match-fixing; if there is any evidence, they will take this into account.”

The latest Greek soccer scandal, following the ‘Koriopolis’ match-fixing probe of 2011, emerged in April when a 173-page document was revealed by prosecutor Aristidis Korreas and prompted a nationwide investigation.

Korreas’s document contained transcripts of telephone conversations tapped by the National Intelligence Service. It is alleged that Marinakis and Hellenic Soccer Federation (EPO) officials Giorgos Sarris and Theodoros Kouridis were responsible for directing a criminal organization from 2011 with the aim of “absolute control of Greek soccer’s fate by the methods of blackmailing and fraud.”

Marinakis was his typically hands-on self after the victory over Arsenal, seen celebrating and posing for pictures with the Olympiakos supporters in the stands after the final whistle.

But while affairs off the pitch cast a shadow over the club, they could not take the shine off the spirit and style displayed by Silva’s team on Tuesday, especially after a deflating 3-0 home defeat in their opener against Bayern Munich.

With Arsenal on the rocks at the bottom of the group without a point and Olympiakos now level on three with their next opponents Dinamo Zagreb, who lost 5-0 at Bayern on Tuesday, the Greeks could be set for more European glory nights this season.

Bernd Schuster will not be taking over as Greece coach after a verbally agreed deal fell through, the Hellenic Soccer Federation (EPO) announced on Wednesday.

The well-traveled 55-year-old German, who has coached Real Madrid and most recently Malaga, was set to succeed Uruguayan Sergio Markarian and lead Greece’s 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign but the deal fell through over a last-minute hitch.

“EPO announced that it has restarted its search for a coach of the national team after a change of attitude from Mr Schuster relating to a verbal agreement with the federation,” said a brief EPO statement.

“Mr Schuster was asked a while ago to sign a preliminary agreement on the terms that had been clarified in detail and fully agreed. However, on his own initiative and without any prior notice he demanded to change them.

“These new requirements suddenly asked by Mr Schuster were not accepted by EPO and (president] Mr (Giorgos) Gkirtzikis has been authorized by the members of the Executive Committee to continue negotiations with other prospective coaches.”

Local media said the dispute was over Schuster’s assistant, with the German reportedly not wanting current caretaker Kostas Tsanas, who coaches the under-21 side.

Former national team coach Markarian and director of soccer Giorgos Karagounis were shown the door on August 7.

Markarian took over in February from Italian Claudio Ranieri who was sacked following a woeful start to Euro 2016 qualifying, which included a humiliating home defeat by the Faroe Islands.

Greece suffered a second loss to the Faroes in June that left them bottom of Group F with no hope of making the finals.

Το ιβηρικό ντέρμπι στη Μαδρίτη μεταξύ της Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης και της Μπενφίκα ξεχωρίζει στο αποψινό πρόγραμμα των ομίλων της 2ης αγωνιστικής του Champions League. Οι δύο ομάδες προέρχονται από νίκες στην πρεμιέρα της διοργάνωσης, με την Ατλέτικο να επικρατεί 2-0 στην Τουρκία της Γαλατασαράι και η Μπενφίκα με το ίδιο σκορ στην έδρα της της Αστάνα. Σε «παράσταση για ένα ρόλο» μετέτρεψε η Μπάγερν το ματς με τη Ντιναμό Ζάγκρεμπ, με πρωταγωνιστή και πάλι τον Ρόμπερτ Λεβαντόφσκι. Με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες η ομάδα του Πεπ Γκουαρντιόλα «καθάρισε» τους Κροάτες με 5-0, που πήγαν με καλή ψυχολογία στην «Αλιάντς Αρίνα» μετά τη νίκη επί της Άρσεναλ, αλλά στα πρώτα 28 λεπτά έχαναν με 4-0.

Η γερμανική ομάδα έκανε το 2Χ2 στον 6ο όμιλο του Champions League, όπου συμμετέχουν και οι Ολυμπιακός, Άρσεναλ και προηγείται στη βαθμολογία με το απόλυτο σε βαθμούς (6).

Ο «χορός» των γκολ άνοιξε στον 13΄ με τον Ντάγκλας Κόστα, στο 21΄ ο Λεβαντόφσκι πέτυχε το 2-0, τέσσερα λεπτά μετά ο Γκέτσε ανέβασε το δείκτη του σκορ στο 3-0 και στο 28΄ ξανά ο Λεβαντόφσκι με το δεύτερο προσωπικό του τέρμα έβαλε σε ένα ακόμη ματς τη… σφραγίδα του (4-0).

Ο Πολωνός, όμως, στο 55΄ «χτύπησε» για τρίτη φορά και με το χατ τρικ που πέτυχε (10 γκολ σε τρία ματς) διαμόρφωσε το τελικό αποτέλεσμα (5-0).

Στους υπόλοιπους αγώνες της βραδιάς, Κυριάκος Παπαδόπουλος και Βασίλης Τοροσίδης βρήκαν δίχτυα, όμως είδαν την ομάδα τους να χάνει.

Ο «Κούλης» άνοιξε το σκορ για τη Λεβερκούζεν στο «Καμπ Νου», αλλά η Μπαρτσελόνα κατάφερε με δύο γκολ στο τελευταίο δεκάλεπτο να «κλέψει» τη νίκη με 2-1. Ενώ ο Βασίλης Τοροσίδης πέτυχε το δεύτερο γκολ της Ρόμα στην ήττα-σοκ 3-2 από τη ΜΠΑΤΕ Μπορίσοφ, στη Λευκορωσία.

Ακόμα ένα αρνητικό αποτέλεσμα για την Τσέλσι, η οποία δεν κατάφερε για ακόμα μια φορά να πανηγυρίσει τη νίκη, αφού ηττήθηκε από στην Πορτογαλία από την Πόρτο με 2-1, στην επιστροφή του Ζοσέ Μουρίνιο στο γήπεδο που αναδείχτηκε.

Μεγάλο «διπλό» πανηγύρισε και η Βαλένθια στη Γαλλία απέναντι στη Λιόν.

Στην καλύτερη εμφάνιση της Ιστορίας του επί βρετανικού εδάφους, ο Ολυμπιακός κατάφερε να φύγει για πρώτη φορά νικητής και μάλιστα, λυγίζοντας την Άρσεναλ μέσα στο Λονδίνο.

Τα γκολ των Πάρντο (33′), Φορτούνη (40′) και Φινμπόγκασον (66′) ήταν υπεραρκετά για να γράψουν το επικό 2-3 στο «Έμιρεϊτς» και να βάλουν «φωτιά» στον 6ο όμιλο του Champions League. Στο 33’ ο Γουόλκοτ και στο 65′ ο Σάντσες είχαν ισοφαρίσει σε 1-1 και 2-2 αντίστοιχα, αλλά στο τέλος οι «κανονιέρηδες» του Βενγκέρ, υποκλίθηκαν στους Πειραιώτες.

Ο Μάρκο Σίλβα ξάφνιασε με την επιλογή του ν` αφήσει στον πάγκο τον Μαζουακού και να βάλει στην 11άδα τον Σαλίνο, ο οποίος μαζί με τον Ελαμπνταλαουί αποτέλεσαν τα άκρα της «ερυθρόλευκης» άμυνας. Στο κέντρο της άμυνας βρέθηκαν οι Μποτία, Σιόβας, στη μεσαία γραμμή οι Καμπιάσο, Κασάμι, μπροστά τους ο Φορτούνης με τους Σεμπά και Πάρντο στα άκρα, ενώ στην κορυφή της επίθεση βρέθηκε ο Ιντέγε.

Ο Ολυμπιακός έδειξε αμυντικογενείς διαθέσεις από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά. Με αλληλοκαλύψεις, οι παίκτες του Σίλβα προσπαθούσαν να κλείσουν τα όποια κενά δημιουργήθηκαν στην «ερυθρόλευκη» άμυνα, με τους γηπεδούχους να έχουν μόλις δύο σουτ στην αντίπαλη εστία στο πρώτο 20λεπτο. Στο 11` το σουτ του Τσάμπερλεϊν έφυγε άουτ, ενώ στο 13` το σουτ του Γουόλκοτ απέκρουσε με διπλή προσπάθεια ο Ρομπέρτο. Η πρώτη αξιόλογη ευκαιρία για τον Ολυμπιακό δημιουργήθηκε στο 23` με το μακρινό σουτ του Φορτούνη που πέρασε άουτ, για να έρθει η φάση του 33ου λεπτού που «πάγωσε» το Emirates. Ο Πάρντο μετά από εκτέλεση κόρνερ, έγινε αποδέκτης της μπάλας έξω από την μεγάλη περιοχή της Άρσεναλ. Η μπάλα από το σουτ που επιχείρησε βρήκε στο πόδι του Τσάμπερλεϊν και ξεγέλασε τον Οσπίνα δίνοντας έτσι το προβάδισμα στον Ολυμπιακό (0-1).

Η Άρσεναλ κατάφερε να ισοφαρίσει δύο λεπτά αργότερα με το σουτ του Γουόλκοτ από πλάγια που δεν μπόρεσε να αποκρούσει ο Ρομπέρτο (1-1). Και ενώ η λογική έλεγε ότι η Άρσεναλ θα κυνηγούσε και ένα γρήγορο δεύτερο γκολ, αυτό ήρθε από την πλευρά των πειραιωτών στο 40`. Ο Φορτούνης εκτέλεσε το κόρνερ, ο Οσπίνα απέκρουσε την μπάλα όμως στη συνέχεια αυτή πέρασε τη γραμμή (με την υπόδειξη του επόπτη γραμμής) δίνοντας προβάδισμα στον Ολυμπιακό (1-2).

Οι «κανονιέρηδες» έψαξαν την ισοφάριση, η οποία λίγο έλειψε να έρθει στο 61ο λεπτό, όμως αρχικά ο Ρομπέρτο (το σουτ του Καθόρλα) και στη συνέχεια ο Ελαμπνταλαουί (το σουτ του Σάντσες) έσωσαν τον Ολυμπιακό από βέβαιη παραβίαση. Το γκολ της ισοφάρισης ήρθε τέσσερα λεπτά αργότερα με κεφαλιά του Σάντσες (2-2), όμως ο Ολυμπιακός φρόντισε να ξαναπαγώσει το Emirates με τον Φινμπόγκασον. Ο Ισλανδός, ο οποίος είχε μπει ως αλλαγή στη θέση του Ιντέγε με την έναρξη του β` ημιχρόνου, έγινε αποδέκτης της εξαιρετικής πάσης του Πάρντο και εκείνος με πλασέ παραβίασε για ακόμη μία φορά την εστία της Άρσεναλ (2-3).

Οι γηπεδούχοι πίεσαν για να φτάσουν στην ισοφάριση και είχαν δύο σπουδαίες φάσεις για να τα καταφέρουν. Στο 85`, σέντρα του Γκιμπς από αριστερά, ο Εζίλ πήρε την μπάλα όμως η μπάλα πέρασε δίπλα από το δοκάρι του Ρομπέρτο. Ο γκολκίπερ του Ολυμπιακού τρία λεπτά αργότερα είπε «όχι» με εντυπωσιακή απόκρουση στην απευθείας εκτέλεση φάουλ του Καθόρλα. Το τελευταίο σφύριγμα του διαιτητή Νιχάους χάρισε στον Ολυμπιακό την πρώτη του νίκη στην «γηραιά αλβιόνα» μετά από 12 σερί ήττες.

Late goals from substitute Sergi Roberto and a phenomenal Luis Suárez finish gave Barcelona a thrilling 2-1 victory against Bayer Leverkusen in UEFA Champions League Group E.

Marc-André ter Stegen and Bernd Leno had made eye-catching saves by the time the visitors took the lead. The home keeper did superbly to block Javier Hernández’s volley in the opening seconds, while Leno had to leap to catch Ivan Rakitić’s free header and then parry Sandro’s goal-bound shot.

Yet when Hakan Çalhanoğlu took the 22nd-minute corner which led to the opener there was defensive fallibility. Barcelona’s part zonal, part man-to-man system misfunctioned, Jérémy Mathieu did not jump at the front post, Ter Stegen was out of position and the merest touch from Kyriakos Papadopolous put the ball in.

Drama continued unabated. Ter Stegen was lectured by Suárez for his part in the goal but almost immediately produced a goal-saving contribution by parrying Karim Bellarabi’s close-range effort with a strong arm.

At the other end, a sublime volleyed pass from Rakitić led to chaos as Neymar’s shot slithered off the far post and Sandro’s follow-up attempt was cleared off the line by Papadopolous.

Barcelona’s second half was stronger, Neymar putting a 55th-minute shot narrowly wide of one post and a 64th-minute free-kick a whisker away from the other. Hernández then missed a gaping chance in front of goal and was immediately replaced.

With Rafinha and Lionel Messi out for many months the sight of Andrés Iniesta limping off just after the hour must have been as painful as the scoreline for Luis Enrique. Sergi Roberto, however, give the Barcelona coach reason to smile when he followed up after Leno had palmed out Suárez’s strike.

Two minutes later Enrique was off the bench in celebration. Munir El Haddadi worked his way into the box from right and passed back to Suárez, who curled in a fine strike.

Key player
Hard to pick between the mature, confident, relentless work of Lars Bender and Christoph Kramer or Papadopolous, who scored and cleared a certain goal off the line. But Suárez’s finish was so crucial, so powerful and dramatic that he is impossible to ignore.

Where the match almost turned
Leverkusen stole a trick from the Barça book with extraordinary pressing. The European champions found it terribly difficult to break through as the visitors worked with athleticism and intelligence, resulting in frustration and errors. But sometimes mercurial talent wriggles free Houdini-style right at the end.

Olympiacos produced a thrilling performance to defeat Arsenal 3-2 in UEFA Champions League Group F and win for the first time in in 13 attempts in England.

With Olympiacos looking to hit Arsenal on the break, both sides created chances in the early stages, with the best falling to Arsenal and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott in quick succession as they surged forward following Olympiacos attacks.

Olympiacos looked compact in defence with Esteban Cambiasso shielding the back four, and with Patjim Kasami and Kostas Fortounis prepared to break at speed they also threatened going forward. Arsenal in contrast looked hesitant at the back, and when no one picked up Pardo from a 33rd-minute corner the forward drilled in a deflected shot from the edge of the area.

Arsenal hit back immediately, with Alexis Sànchez on the left threading a pass through to Walcott to fire in off Roberto. Olympiacos did not lose their composure and from another corner restored their lead five minutes before the break, as Ospina dropped Fortounis’s high cross into his net.

Arsenal picked up the pace after the break with the introduction of Aaron Ramsey for Francis Coquelin on the hour and within minutes both Per Mertesacker and Santo Cazlorla had come close. Sànchez drew Arsenal level on 62 minutes when he headed in Walcott’s cross, but Olympiacos were back in front within a minute.

Olympiacos went straight up field from the kick off and Pardo crossed low for substitute Alfred Finnbogason to knock in at the near post. With a pair of matches with Bayern to come and still no points on the board, Arsenal have a mountain to climb, whole Olympiacos travel to Zagreb invigorated.

Aaron Mooy’s hat-trick stole the limelight from Greek international guest player Kostas Katsouranis as Melbourne City outclassed Heidelberg United 5-0 in a FFA Cup quarter-final at Olympic Village on Tuesday night.

Mooy bagged an impressive second-half hat-trick, and had a hand in another goal as City overran the home team.

A FFA Cup season-high 11,372 spectators crammed into the Olympic Village in Melbourne’s northern suburbs hoping to see EURO 2004 winner Katsouranis inspire the former National Soccer League club to an unlikely win.

However, Melbourne City took a lead within two minutes as a smart passing movement started by Mooy ended with striker Bruno Fornaroli converting from close range.

City dominated periods of the opening half, yet it took a miraculous diving save from Tando Velaphi to deny Kaine Shepperd an equaliser, with the move started by Katsouranis featuring in a one-off guest appearance for the Bergers.

After the break, however, it was all about Mooy. The in-form Socceroos midfielder doubled the lead midway through the second half with a smart low finish from outside the penalty area, and he repeated the feat a few minutes later.

Mooy tapped in for his hat-trick in the 84th minute to become the highest scorer in this season’s competition, before Fornaroli added salt to the wounds with his second and a late fifth for his team.

Olympiacos dominate their league; they are a team with a big advantage because of that, because they can prepare for these type of games. They know how to compete in the Champions League. They are well-organised and they have some players who know the Premier League as well.

You have to win your home games if you want to qualify from the group stage – it’s as simple as that. We cannot afford to drop points now against anybody at home.

We never start the game thinking it is impossible to get a result, we never think that way. We know it is a difficult game but it is a difficult competition. We know how big a team Arsenal are but we believe in our abilities. We are ready. Against Bayern we played well and we were competitive but the result didn’t reflect that.

If you asked who would be the top two teams in the group, most would say Arsenal and Bayern, but football is not always like this; there is no rule that says all favourites win their games. Zagreb’s result against Arsenal has made things more difficult for us, though.
