EPL: Everton – Liverpool 1-1, Rodgers sacked after the game

original

Everton forward Romelu Lukaku struck in first-half stoppage time to cancel out Danny Ings’ opening goal to ensure the Merseyside derby ended in a draw for the sixth time in seven meetings.

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had made two excellent saves in the first half and the visitors capitalised on the Belgian’s interventions when Ings headed in for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

But Lukaku equalised on the stroke of half-time after a mistake from Emre Can and nothing could divide the two city rivals in a goalless second half.

There were flashpoints between the two teams in a match that certainly was not lacking in passion, even if goalmouth action was at a premium after the break.

The result means Everton extend their poor derby record; they have now won only one of their last 18 encounters with Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have only one victory from their last six league outings after a performance that was low on goalscoring opportunities.

The big team news ahead of kick-off revolved around players who were not passed fit to play, as both sides named the same line-ups from their previous league matches.

Seamus Coleman and John Stones were both unavailable for Everton, while Christian Benteke did not make it back in time to play for Liverpool, who started with Daniel Sturridge after he was rested in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.

Liverpool started the brighter of the two teams, Martin Skrtel off-target with a header and Ings lashing a shot narrowly over the crossbar, before James Milner forced Tim Howard into a low save after a clever one-two with Philippe Coutinho.

Everton had not produced an early attacking threat but came closest to opening the scoring when Ross Barkley’s free-kick was headed towards goal by Steven Naismith, who was denied by an excellent one-handed save from Mignolet.

Mignolet was at it again with a good diving stop from James McCarthy’s drive as the home side started to move into the ascendancy.

But the first goal arrived at the other end on 42 minutes. Milner’s corner found Ings unmarked just three yards from goal and the forward netted with a simple header.

However, Everton mounted an instant response as Can made a poor clearance from Gerard Deulofeu’s cross and Lukaku converted with an accurate low finish for his fifth BPL goal of the season.

Tyias Browning sent a header just over the crossbar as the second half started more quietly than the frantic finish to the first, while a curling effort from Barkley dropped just past the post.

The home side were looking by far the most likely to find a winner and a right-footed Lukaku shot was repelled by Mignolet.

Coutinho then cut inside and shot straight at Howard and Milner headed wide from a decent opportunity as Liverpool finally threatened, but the match finished level after a second period that failed to match the drama of the first.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: “I thought we did enough to get the three points

“We saw Mignolet have the best two moments of the game. He was outstanding, especially with the first one to keep out Steven Naismith’s header, it was as good a save as you are going to see. The same with James McCarthy’s shot as well because his view was blocked.
“We are disappointed with the goal we conceded from a dead-ball situation, but I was extremely pleased with the way we reacted and performed.
“We looked even stronger in the second half. Every time we had the ball in their half we looked like creating something and we looked dangerous.
“There are too many positives to just highlight dropping two points at home. I didn’t think we had that little bit of luck or the little break you sometimes need in front of goal.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: “I thought that we were the better team in first half; a real threat and we deservedly took lead. I’m disappointed with the goal as it was a mistake.

“In the second half we knew we would come under pressure and the game became counter-attacking for us. I’m proud of the players.

“The motivation of the players was very high to come here. We know we are improving with each game. We can still be better with our passing. In the second half, we didn’t keep the ball well enough when we won it back.

“It is a very good point. It is a difficult place to come. We looked like we were getting better in our attack and defensively we were more cohesive.

“There’s no pressure for me. My worry is for the team and you have seen a response of how they feel. This is a team which has lost four of the real catalysts and there is a constant rebuilding going on here.”

rogers

Brendan Rodgers has left his post as Liverpool manager with immediate effect after his contract was terminated, the club have announced.

Liverpool have accumulated 12 points from eight Barclays Premier League matches this term, with Sunday’s 1-1 Merseyside derby draw at Everton leaving them in 10th position.

Rodgers was appointed as Liverpool manager in June 2012 after guiding BPL debutants Swansea City to 11th place in the previous campaign, and he won 63 of his 122 league matches during his time at Anfield (52%).

The 42-year-old led Liverpool to within two points of their first BPL crown in 2013/14, with Manchester City pipping them to the title on the final day. They finished sixth the following campaign.

In a joint Fenway Sports Group statement on liverpoolfc.com, principal owner John W Henry, chairman Tom Werner and president Mike Gordon said: “We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Brendan Rodgers for the significant contribution he has made to the club and express our gratitude for his hard work and commitment.

“All of us have experienced some wonderful moments with Brendan as manager and we are confident he will enjoy a long career in the game.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch. Ambition and winning are at the heart of what we want to bring to Liverpool and we believe this change gives us the best opportunity to deliver it.

“The search for a new manager is under way and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Arsenal v Man Utd: Wenger looking forward to ‘special’ fixture

imagesSYXTU9F0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is excited about the prospect of locking horns with Manchester United in one of the Barclays Premier League’s “special” fixtures this weekend.

Arsenal versus United was always seen as a title-defining fixture around the turn of the century, as Wenger’s side duelled for supremacy with Alex Ferguson’s United but this has been dilluted with the rise of Chelsea and Manchester City.

However, Sunday’s contest at the Emirates Stadium once again has a top-of-the-table edge to it with Arsenal sitting only three points behind league leaders United, and Wenger believes that means this weekend’s meeting takes on extra importance.

“It is a special fixture because usually Man Utd are always fighting at the top,” he said. “It has an even bigger meaning now because there are three points between the teams and we play at home in a big game.

“We have just come from a big win at Leicester and we want to continue our run. We are the only team who has beaten [Leicester], so I don’t see why we should not believe we can beat Manchester United.”

Arsenal’s impressive 5-2 victory at the King Power Stadium last Saturday was followed up by a 3-2 home defeat to Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League. David Ospina was selected in goal during the week but Petr Cech is set to return this weekend. Laurent Koscielny (hamstring), Mikel Arteta (knock) and Mathieu Flamini (hamstring) are definitely out but Wenger expects Francis Coquelin to be fit.

The Frenchman’s opposite number Louis van Gaal, meanwhile, was effusive in his praise of Arsenal on Thursday. Van Gaal described Wenger’s team as “technically and tactically the best team in the league” and also said he is wary of a backlash from their loss to Olympiacos.

United travel to north London buoyed by four consecutive wins in all competitions, with last Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Sunderland moving them top of the BPL table for the first time in over two years.

Juan Mata has been in superb form in recent weeks, and the Spaniard was instrumental in United’s 2-1 midweek win over Wolfsburg, scoring the equaliser from the penalty spot before setting up Chris Smalling’s decisive goal. Michael Carrick missed that game with a minor injury but is fit to play at Emirates Stadium.
“The solution is recovery, recovery, recovery – that is why it’s so difficult to prepare for the match against Arsenal,” Van Gaal added. “We have to wait and see for Saturday and then I can make decisions.”

Arsenal’s win rate of 24% against Manchester United in the BPL is their lowest versus any team in the competition.
Wayne Rooney scored his first Barclays Premier League goal (October 2002), his first league goal for Man Utd (October 2004) and his 100th BPL goal (January 2010) against Arsenal.
Louis van Gaal has lost just one of his five meetings with Arsene Wenger (all competitions). Van Gaal lost in the FA Cup last season after winning one and drawing one in the BPL, and he won once and drew once in the 1999/00 UEFA Champions League group stages with Barcelona.

Everton v Liverpool: Rodgers happy to be ‘favourites’

imagesT4FGI30Q

Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool are embracing the tag of favourites ahead of their Merseyside derby at Everton on Sunday.

Liverpool have struggled early in 2015-16, as evidenced by their disappointing 1-1 draw with Sion in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, but a 3-2 victory at home to Aston Villa last Saturday ended a run of four Barclays Premier League matches without a win.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez suggested on Friday that Liverpool’s transfer expenditure over recent seasons makes them favourites to win at Goodison Park.

And Rodgers was happy for his side to take on that mantle.

“We will always take the favourites tag,” Rodgers said. “At Liverpool that’s what you want. We’re happy to take the favourites tag. We are Liverpool and we expect to work like that.

“There’s no advantage or disadvantage to being favourites. It shows that we are a big club and people look to us to take the initiative.

“Every game we go into, the level of the opponents goes up, because of the nature of the club we are.

“It shows the club we are at, the level of expectancy as opposed to other clubs. We have to live with that, we are expected to do well, and it’s about helping the team evolve and deal with that expectancy.”

Everton, with three wins from their last four matches in all competitions, are in better form and at home, but have not tasted Merseyside derby success since October 2010.

They came from two goals down to beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 at The Hawthorns last Monday, but Martinez is having to contend with a lengthy injury list.

While Seamus Coleman and John Stones could return from hamstring and knee injuries respectively, Muhamed Besic (hamstring), Tom Cleverley (ankle/foot), Leighton Baines (ankle/foot), Tony Hibbert (knee) and Steven Pienaar (hamstring) are all out.

For Liverpool, Dejan Lovren (ankle), Roberto Firmino (back) and captain Jordan Henderson (foot) are all sidelined.

Centre-forward Christian Benteke, meanwhile, faces a fitness test to determine his availability as he seeks to return from a hamstring injury.

His fellow striker Daniel Sturridge started and scored twice in the win over Villa and is set to continue up front at Goodison Park.

Match Facts
Everton have gone nine league matches without a victory against their neighbours Liverpool. They have not gone 10 without a victory against the Reds since 1984 (a run of 11 matches).
Liverpool have lost just one of their last eight BPL matches at Goodison Park, losing 2-0 in October 2010. The last three have ended in draws.
This fixture has seen the most red cards shown in Barclays Premier League history (20); four more than any other match in the competition.
Daniel Sturridge has scored five times against Everton in the league. The only club he has more league goals against is Newcastle United (6).

Sevilla – Barcelona 2-1:Barca’s misfiring attack worries coach

during the UEFA Champions League match between AS Roma and FC Barcelona on September 16, 2015 in Rome, Italy.

Barcelona’s misfiring forward line left coach Luis Enrique scratching his head again on Saturday as last season’s treble winners went down to a 2-1 defeat at Sevilla.

The Catalan side’s trident attack hit a record 122 goals as Barca won La Liga, the Spanish Cup and the Champions League but they have so far struggled to reach that level in this campaign.

Lionel Messi has missed the last two matches through injury but even before that was not at his deadly best while both Neymar and Luis Suarez have lacked sharpness.

With the goal flow slowed, Barca’s defending has come under the spotlight. They were thrashed 4-1 at Celta Vigo and a second successive away defeat followed at Sevilla.

In between there was a narrow 2-1 win over newly-promoted Las Palmas and a rather fortunate 2-1 home defeat of Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, having trailed with 10 minutes remaining.

“Normally you can expect the highest level from our players,” Luis Enrique told a news conference.

“Coaches and teams look to create the most number of chances for the top players to score.

“We are not anywhere near our best at the moment but this will change I have no doubt.

“We looked for the openings but we were not able to take advantage of them when they came.”

Barca have been stretched by the Fifa transfer ban that has prevented them making signings during the last two transfer windows and this along with injuries has meant they have had to rely on youth players.

“This was a game where both teams had a lot of chances and it is incredible that we have come away with just one goal,” added Luis Enrique.

“There were 15 minutes in the second half though where Sevilla were on top and that has cost us. We tried everything to come back but it was not possible.”

Chelsea beaten at home by Southampton 3-1

_85895319_chelsea

Chelsea’s terrible start to the season continued as Southampton came from behind to record a stunning victory at Stamford Bridge.

The Premier League champions took an early lead through Willian’s free-kick.

Steven Davis drove in an equaliser before Sadio Mane ran through after a defensive error to put Saints ahead.

Graziano Pelle’s angled finish sealed victory for Southampton, who climb to ninth in the table. Chelsea’s fourth defeat of the season leaves them 16th.

The Blues have taken only eight points from a possible 24 this season and are only four above the relegation zone.

Chelsea’s struggles this season have been exacerbated by an uncharacteristically poor defence. They have now conceded 17 league goals – two more than they did in the whole of Mourinho’s first season with the club in 2004-05.

Following Chelsea’s defeat by Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday, fans called for the return of captain John Terry, and they got their wish on Saturday as the 34-year-old was restored to the centre of defence alongside Gary Cahill.

However, Terry’s presence did not solve Chelsea’s problems. Branislav Ivanovic and Ramires were fortunate to avoid giving away penalties with clumsy challenges, while Davis was allowed to run unchallenged to score the equaliser from Pelle’s chested pass.

After the break, Cahill gave the ball away to Dusan Tadic and Terry failed to cut out his pass, enabling Mane to put Saints in front.

Mane was a constant menace to the Blues defence, which backed off to allow the forward to set up Pelle for Southampton’s third.

Misfiring Falcao
With Diego Costa serving the last game of a three-match suspension, the visit of Southampton provided Radamel Falcao with a chance to make a case for a regular starting place.

He has scored only one goal since joining on loan from Monaco in July and, based on his showing against Southampton, it is unlikely he will be threatening Costa any time soon.

Although Falcao had a claim for a penalty when he fell under a challenge by Saints goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, he did not trouble the visitors enough and managed a solitary shot in 90 minutes.

Can Saints build on last season?
Southampton performed beyond expectations to finish seventh in the Premier League last season, but they had won only two of their first seven games this term before the trip to Chelsea.

However, the manner of this victory – their first at Stamford Bridge since 2002 – will give them confidence of challenging for a top-seven finish again.

They rarely looked troubled by the Blues, with Mane and Pelle combining to devastating effect in attack. One or both of them played a part in all three goals.

Southampton are also a tough side to break down – only Everton have beaten them by more than one goal in the Premier League this season.

Soccer Transfer Rumors: Cristiano Ronaldo Leaving Real Madrid? PSG, Manchester United To Make Bid?

athletic-club-v-real-madrid-cf-la-liga

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo has been rumored to be moving away from the Spanish capital for quite some time now with Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United ready to make bids for £90 million, as reported by Mirror.

The forward seems to be content in Spain but is open to leaving Madrid saying, per Marca, “I’m happy at Real Madrid. I want to win more silverware and I feel great, but as I’ve said millions of times before, you never know what the future holds. I’m really happy here right now. I’m a professional. I always try to give it my all and I’m comfortable at Real Madrid.”

The Portuguese international has nothing left to prove in La Liga as he recently became Real Madrid’s all-time goal scorer with 324, eclipsing Raul’s record, according to Real Madrid’s website. Ronaldo scored the goals in just 308 appearances and has won the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League with Madrid.

As per ESPN, the 30-year-old also recorded his 500th career goal against Malmo FF in Sweden. He has scored 446 for professional clubs Sporting, Manchester United and Real Madrid while scoring 55 for the Portugal.

Ronaldo also told Marca that he is happy on breaking Raul’s record and scoring his 500th career goal. “I’m really happy and pleased. It wasn’t something I set out to do when I joined Real Madrid, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to beat the record. Raúl sent me a message saying that he hoped I scored many more and I know that he meant it,” he said.

AS English posted on Twitter that Ronaldo jokingly corrected a reporter who said “500 goals now Ronaldo” with “I think it’s 501.” Manchester United did not waste any time in congratulating their favorite transfer target on Twitter.

Recently appearing for the BBC Documentary “Wayne Rooney – The Man Behind The Goals,” Ronaldo said that he could play with his former partner at United in the future. “He’s a fantastic team player and he scores goals. I miss playing with him. Maybe in the future we will play together again,” he said, as quoted by Express.

Fans at Old Trafford should not be so excited about the news as NESN reports that Ronaldo prefers PSG over United when he decides to leave Madrid. The French club are looking to replace Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is set to leave Paris once his contract expires at the end of the 2015-2016 season.

The 10 imports who will capture the imagination of the A-League in this season

untitled

You may not know much about them now but by the end of the season, their names will be on the back of jerseys throughout the country. The momentum leading into the start of the upcoming A-League season is a ripple more than a wave, such is the lack of superstar players stealing attention from rival codes.

In past seasons, names such as Alessandro Del Piero, Emile Heskey, Shinji Ono and Juninho pushed the game into the mainstream of the Australian sporting public. In the absence of such star power, it will be the quality of football doing that in the 11th season of the competition.

It’s a sign of maturity as much as it is about the financial position of Australia within the global football market that A-League clubs are opting to sign players in their prime rather than ageing stars. Lesser names, better quality; that’s the new mantra when it comes to foreign players.

Federico Piovaccari, Western Sydney Wanderers

It’s a good thing the Italian striker has broad shoulders because the fortunes of Western Sydney Wanderers will largely rest upon them. The 31-year-old arrives as the first marquee at Pirtek Stadium since Ono and has been given one simple job – score. He’s quick, nimble, powerful but as strong in the air as he is with his feet. He is a talented modern poacher who played in the Serie A, UEFA Champions League and La Liga. An instinctive finisher, he could win the golden boot with the right service. Without that, he may labour with frustration.

Leonardo, Newcastle Jets

Just six years ago, he was the architect behind Luis Suarez 23 goals for Ajax. Leonardo is not your ordinary Brazilian journeyman globetrotting on the back of a DVD highlight package, but a player with genuine pedigree. He has that knack for making the impossible appear so easy, balancing class with composure. Fitness is his main battle but he is on the right track. Expect his best to come after the opening rounds.

Milos Ninkovic, Sydney FC

It was in Sydney’s most disappointing match this pre-season where Ninkovic showed why he could become one of their best imports. A right-foot volley from outside the box rattled the opposite corner of the net in what was the only positive of the Sky Blues’ loss to the Mariners behind closed doors. He was far from match fit then and if the 28-time Serbian international is as half as effective as his teammate Milos Dimitrijevic expects, he could be frightening.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah, Melbourne Victory

“Pen the Ben” was the call from the Victory fans such was the impact the Tunisian international had last season. He is one of the players that truly raises the quality of the league, arriving from a football education far more advanced than in Australia. He re-signed with Victory before the grand final, and with a full year of familiarising himself with his new home, Ben Khalfallah will be expected to pick up from here where left.

Filip Holosko, Sydney FC

Pressure doesn’t phase the man who spent the bulk of his career with Turkish giants Besiktas but that doesn’t mean the expectation won’t be high on Sydney’s new marquee. A stalwart of the Slovak international team, Holosko is the player the Sky Blues had no hesitation in using to replace Marc Janko. Versatile in attack, quick, powerful and technically gifted, he will bring more entertainment to Moore Park.

Besart Berisha, Melbourne Victory

Everyone knows what to expect from him by now and much to the displeasure of the nine other clubs, everyone knows he will deliver. Pantomime villain, entertainer and proven goal scorer; everything you want in an A-League visa player.

Iacopo La Rocca, Adelaide United

The former Wanderers hardman doesn’t fit the bill of Adelaide’s foreign player rule. He’s not quick, a good ball player or a Spanish speaker and that’s why he’ll be their most important. For all their fluid football, the Reds lacked the mongrel to match it with Victory and Sydney FC last year and the introduction of a man whose surname aptly translates to “The Fortress” will transform Hindmarsh into just that.

Diego Castro, Perth Glory

How many players can say they’ve spent the past seven years as a regular starter in La Liga? And that’s why the long-suffering fans out west can finally have something to be excited about this season. The Spanish playmaker may be one of the older players moving to Australia at 33 but don’t discount his experience and talent. More than 450 games in the top two flights of the Spanish leagues make this winger one of the most-eagerly anticipated arrivals.

Harry Novillo, Melbourne City

Most foreigners come to Australia in the latter stages of their career but here is a player who could truly move on to bigger and better things. The former Lyon winger is just 23 and looming as one of the brightest sparks in the competition with Melbourne City. He may miss the opener through injury but his dynamic attacking style will propel City upon his return.

Jeffrey Sarpong, Wellington Phoenix

Brilliant players always seem to have time on the ball and that’s definitely the case with 27-year-old Jeffrey Sarpong. After the success the Kiwis had with Roly Bonevacia last year, it’s little surprise they’ve looked to The Netherlands again with the signing of the former Dutch youth international. At his age and a CV that lists Ajax and Real Sociedad among his former employers, it’s astonishing to work out how he’s at the Phoenix in what could be one of the best pieces of business this season.
