FC Barcelona currently stands at second place in the La Liga Table and is the defending Champions League winners. They have done it with the trio of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, but according to Sky Sports, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague noted that Messi is considering a Barcelona exit.

“It is the closest he’s ever been to leaving Barcelona. It doesn’t mean he will, but it is the closest he has ever been to leaving the club,” Balague said.
Sky Sports’ Graham Hunter also chimed in his thoughts on the departure of the forward from Spain. He said, “The climate, not just at the Camp Nou but in Catalonia, is probably enough to make him and his family scratch their heads and wonder. I guess at his age, maybe you start to look at your next move and you think your next move at 28 is vitally important.”

The Argentine international is currently sidelined with a knee injury and is on trial for tax fraud charges, per El Pais as translated by Forbes. The 28-year-old forward and his father could each face a jail sentence of 22 months and 15 days together with a €4.1 million fine.

However, Spanish newspaper Sport via The Express reports that Barcelona is ready to give Messi a contract extension. He has a release clause of £180 million in his contract, which expires in 2018. Manchester United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are all reportedly interested in the four-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Though I am largely indifferent to sporting pursuits in general, I despise kickboxing and ascribe blame for my aversion to it to the great Stan (the Man) Longinidis, at least indirectly. For it was his fame, long before I ever knew of his existence, that contributed in no small measure to my early adolescent suffering, in the late ’80s.

My cousin, who at the age of 15 had already attained the height of six feet, was a fanaticised devotee, a fact I came to acknowledge when, sitting quietly one day, he surreptitiously insinuated himself within my vicinity and landed what is known in technical parlance as a ’roundhouse kick’ to my left shoulder. “Pow!” he exclaimed. “Stan the Man!” “Stan the what, μουλαροτρίφτη;” I responded indignantly, believing at the time that there could be no worse a curse than to be accused of rubbing down mules.

By way of a riposte, my cousin executed a jab, cross and a jump kick that sent me sprawling. “It’s Stan the Man Longinidis, and yes, he’s won the championship over muay thai champion Four-Eyes!” he offered by way of commentary, as I searched blindly for my spectacles. For the next year, every time my cousin and I would meet, which was uncomfortably often, I would be successively poked, jabbed, kicked and punched, all in the name of the nebulous Stan the Man.

“Do you know why they call him Stan the Man Longinidis?” my cousin asked me one day as he expertly performed a sidekick upon my personage. “I don’t know,” I responded, picking myself off the floor. “Maybe because he is a man?” “No vre,” my cousin barked, following up with four rapidly delivered punches to my sternum. “Do you know why they call him Longinidis?” I posited that the -idis suffix denoted Pontian descent and that Longinus was the name of the Roman soldier who pierced the side of Jesus Christ on the cross and then believed. An illegal ear tweak and nipple cripple soon disabused me of my misapprehension. “They call him Longinidis,” my cousin emphasised with the clipped tones of a Gestapo torturer, “because he can take you out of action for a long time.”

To add insult to injury, my cousin felt that my understanding of the art of kickboxing as a condition precedent to my compulsory adulation of Stan the Man would benefit from viewing the recently-released Kickboxer movie a total of 30 times and its sequels (there are an excruciating four of them) another 10 times each. In my mind, my image of Stan ‘the Man’ gradually fused with that of Jean-Claude Van Damme, and when my cousin, in our rougher sparrings, accidentally drew blood, his Tong Po-like exclamation “you bleed like Mai Li. Mai Li, good” would elicit a convincing Van Dammian/Longinidian “nooooooooo…” from my good self. After being compelled to watch yet another Van Damme blockbuster, this time Over the Top, on the subject of arm-wrestling and possibly the worst movie ever made, I gradually grew dismissive of Stan ‘the Man’, secure in the knowledge that I could probably best him in a thumb-wrestle.

When my grandmother, on one of her random patrols in the garden, apprehended my cousin and I making plaster of Paris and smashing bottles in order to fight muay thai in the ‘ancient way’, our kickboxing careers abruptly came to an end as she attempted, and almost succeeded, in impaling us upon her tomato stakes. Soon after, my cousin, abjuring Stan ‘the Man’s’ impeccable mullet coiffure, discovered the New Kids on the Block and imposed upon me a hairstyle akin to that sported by Jordan Knight before becoming obsessed with kendo. For this, and much else, my grandmother and her tomato stakes are to blame.

All the while, the real Stan ‘the Man’ Longinidis was becoming the champion we all know and love. He is, after all, one of the few fighters to have won world titles in three different styles: international rules kickboxing, full contact and muay thai. Furthermore, on 10 October he became the first Australian from any martial arts fighting code to be inducted in the Australian Sports Hall Of Fame. As such, he more than deserves our admiration, more so because he is one of those brave people who have dared to live their dream. Quitting his day job as a computer programmer (and I have heard pundits describe his fighting style as ‘analytical’) in order to train, he managed to win the North American and USA heavyweight kickboxing titles as well as the Australian heavyweight title. In April 1990 he became the first Australian to win a World Kickboxing Title when he achieved the K.I.C.K Full Contact Super Heavyweight Title and added another two world titles to his name in 1991.

I remember Stan’s bout with Dennis Alexio, which received widespread coverage in Australia. That fight lasted for six seconds, with Longinidis dealing the famed Alexio a low kick which broke his leg. For weeks later, my cousin would attempt to re-enact that kick upon my own spindly shanks, all the while ruminating over whether parallels could be drawn between Stan ‘the Man’ and Alexio and Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed.

1996, the year Stan ‘the Man’ became the first westerner to fight for and attain the WMC World Super heavyweight Muay Thai Title in Thailand, was a watershed year for me because it was at this moment that I divested myself of my pro-republican views, embracing instead a monarchist position, solely because Stan ‘the Man’ was crowned as champion by the King of Thailand, and I felt that if as a community, we supported the republic, such crownings as these would be rendered null and void. As if in acknowledgement of such consideration, Stan ‘the Man’ persevered, despite a serious knee injury that threatened to end his career, necessitating a complete knee reconstruction in 1997.

Stan ‘the Man’ Longinidis continued to amaze and enthrall my cousin and I until 2000 where he retired after beating Peter ‘The Chief’ Graham in Melbourne, coming out of retirement for one fight in 2003 before leaving the ring permanently. It says much for his professionalism and ethos that at a French martial arts expo in 2000, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award recognising his major influential impact on the early days of the sport, and his status as one of the most famous names and brands in the history of kickboxing. Jean-Claude Van Damme was nowhere to be seen.

What many people do not know is that Stan ‘the Man’ has acted as a role model and mentor to many younger Greek Australians. His perseverance, trail-blazing commitment to excellence and willingness to engage with the youth in diverse areas has earned him the undying gratitude of many sections of the community. One of the proudest of these is the Pontian community and it is for this reason that Pontiaki Estia (of which Stan’s father has been a dedicated and active member for many years, playing the Pontian lyra on a voluntary basis at functions since 1976) has seen fit to honour one of its greatest and most humble of sons, at a dedicated function in his honour, on 30 October 2015. Given that his achievements were attained in the context of a society that was only just becoming used to migrants assuming a high profile in sport, an entire generation was uplifted and made confident in their own identity by virtue of his victories. For this, and much more besides, the honours Pontiaki Estia seek to bestow upon him are timely and well deserved.

Wayne Rooney failed to convert a spot-kick as Manchester United lost 3-1 on penalties to second-tier Middlesbrough in the League Cup on Wednesday, while Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool edged Bournemouth.

After 120 goalless minutes at Old Trafford, the fourth-round tie went to penalties and with Rooney, Michael Carrick and Ashley Young all fluffing their lines, Championship side Middlesbrough pulled off a memorable win.

United followed holders Chelsea and Arsenal in exiting the competition, while Middlesbrough set up a home quarter-final with Everton.

“You can say it’s unlucky, but I said that after the City match also,” said United manager Louis van Gaal, whose side drew 0-0 with Manchester City on Sunday.

“You have to force the luck, but we didn’t do that because we didn’t score. That’s why I’m disappointed.”

A low-key game that saw Van Gaal make nine changes to his starting XI sprang to life mid-way through the second half, with home defender Daley Blind the central figure.

The Dutchman was involved in two huge scares for United — first hacking the ball into his own net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside, and then dispatching a back-pass that stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero almost allowed to bobble in for what would have been a comical own goal.

As the game ticked into injury time there was a flurry of chances, with Jesse Lingard hitting the post for United and Romero saving from Grant Leadbitter and Stewart Downing at the other end.

United pair Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini each had penalty shouts rejected in extra time and went close with headers, and the home side were left to rue their missed opportunities.

Rooney’s opening penalty was brilliantly saved by Tomas Mejias and with Carrick blazing over the bar and Mejias also denying Young, spot-kicks from Leadbitter, Downing and Ben Gibson took Aitor Karanka’s men through.

“I’m very proud of my players,” said Karanka. “It was an amazing night for them.”

Liverpool’s new manager Klopp tasted victory at the fourth attempt as his side beat Bournemouth 1-0 at Anfield.

Liverpool had recorded draws against Tottenham Hotspur, Rubin Kazan and Southampton in Klopp’s first three games after succeeding Brendan Rodgers, but Nathaniel Clyne’s first-half strike got the German off the mark.

“It’s better than a draw,” Klopp told Sky Sports with a wry smile.

“I’m really satisfied tonight because this team never played together since I’m here — young players, new players, players who didn’t play for a long time because of injuries — and they did really well.”

Clyne struck in the 17th minute, following up after Joao Teixeira’s audacious back-heel had been cleared off the line to score his first Liverpool goal and set up a quarter-final at his former club Southampton.

Premier League leaders Manchester City will host Hull City in the last eight after a routine 5-1 home victory over Crystal Palace, which came at the cost of an injury to right-back Pablo Zabaleta.

Wilfried Bony headed City in front from Aleksandar Kolarov’s 22nd-minute corner before Kelechi Iheanacho teed up Kevin De Bruyne to tap in his sixth goal in nine club games shortly before half-time.

Zabaleta was stretchered off early in the second half after hurting his knee in a collision with Wilfried Zaha, with Bacary Sagna replacing him.

City manager Manuel Pellegrini said the Argentine had damaged the medial ligament in his right knee and would undergo tests on Thursday.

Second-half goals by Iheanacho, Yaya Toure, from the penalty spot, and 17-year-old substitute Manu Garcia sealed victory, with Palace replying through Damien Delaney’s 89th-minute header.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa began life without sacked manager Tim Sherwood by losing 2-1 at Premier League rivals Southampton, who won courtesy of second-half goals from Maya Yoshida and Graziano Pelle.

Eden Hazard squandered the decisive penalty as Stoke City exacerbated Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s misery with victory in the League Cup on Tuesday, while second-tier Sheffield Wednesday stunned Arsenal 3-0.

After Jon Walters put Stoke ahead with a fine 20-yard shot at the Britannia Stadium, Chelsea substitute Loic Remy, on for the injured Diego Costa, lashed home an injury-time equaliser to make the score 1-1.

Following a goalless period of extra time, the first nine penalties of the shootout were all scored, only for the out-of-form Hazard to see his 10th spot-kick parried by Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland, condemning Chelsea to a ninth defeat of the season and sending the holders out.

Defending his team’s performance, Mourinho said: “What the players did tonight is face some people that write and speak, and said: ‘You are stupid’.

“What some people write and say is really bad for the players. Maybe they think my players are like them when they were players. My players don’t do that. They tried everything.”

Chelsea’s exit came hot on the heels of a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United on Saturday, which left Mourinho facing a Football Association misconduct charge after being sent to the stands, and ramped up the pressure on the Portuguese ahead of Saturday’s Premier League visit of Liverpool.

With Chelsea currently 15th in the league table and third in their Champions League group, British newspapers have speculated that Mourinho could be sacked if their fortunes do not improve quickly.

Matters began to conspire against Chelsea in the 33rd minute when Costa went off nursing an apparent rib injury following an earlier collision with Butland.

Walters broke the deadlock in fine style in the 52nd minute, gathering a pass from Glenn Whelan on the edge of the box, swivelling and crashing a shot in off the crossbar.

In reply, Kurt Zouma struck a post for Chelsea before Remy levelled matters in stoppage time, crashing a shot into the roof of the net after Zouma flicked on Willian’s corner.

Moments later Stoke’s Phil Bardsley was sent off after being shown a second yellow card for hacking down Chelsea substitute Kenedy.

But the visitors could not make the most of their numerical advantage in extra time and in the ensuing shootout, it was Hazard, who has endured a wretched start to the season, who blinked first.

WENGER SCATHING

At Hillsborough, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal were well beaten by Championship side Wednesday and also lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott to injury in the first half.

Ross Wallace put Wednesday ahead after 27 minutes and then teed up Lucas Joao for the hosts’ second goal shortly before half-time, with Sam Hutchinson completing victory early in the second period.

Wenger, who has never won the League Cup, had made eight changes to the team that beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday for the game, which was a repeat of the 1993 final.

Asked how his young fringe players had handled the occasion, he delivered a scathing assessment, telling Sky Sports: “It was too high for them. They are not ready to play at this level, none of them.”

On the injuries to Oxlade-Chamberlain and his replacement Walcott, both of whom limped off inside 18 minutes, he added: “We are short now because we lose Chamberlain today, we lose Walcott and we have already a few injuries.

“It is a big blow for us, of course to lose the game, but even more for the other competitions, which are very important for us, to lose two players of that stature.”

It was Wednesday’s second Premier League scalp in this season’s competition, following their third-round win at Newcastle United, and brought Arsenal’s run of four successive victories to an end.

“Everything belongs to the players. They were fantastic,” said Wednesday’s Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal.

“We put a plan together and they did it 100 percent.”

Elsewhere, second-tier Hull City defeated in-form Premier League side Leicester City 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, while Everton also needed penalties to beat Norwich City, 4-3, following another 1-1 draw.

Ο Ερνάνι γλίτωσε τον Ολυμπιακό από την ήττα στο «Γ.Καραϊσκάκης» στο πλάισιο της 1η αγωνιστικής των ομίλων του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδος, αφού ο Πλατανιάς προηγήθηκε δύο φορές αλλά ο Πορτογάλος ισοφάρισε ισάριθμες, την τελευταία στις καθυστερήσεις, γράφοντας το τελικό 2-2.

Σημαντικό «διπλό» της ΑΕΚ που επικράτησε 1-0 στην Ξάνθη, εύκολη νίκη του Παναθηναϊκούμε 3-0 επί του Λεβαδειακού, ενώ αν και δυσκολεύτηκε ο ΠΑΟΚ επικράτησε του Πανθρακικού με 2-0 στην Τούμπα. Σημαντικό «διπλό» μέσα στο Αγρίνιο πήρε ο Πανιώνιος από τον Παναιτωλικό με 2-0. Ολυμπιακός – Πλατανιάς 2-2
Η μίνι έκπληξη στην πρεμιέρα των ομίλων του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδας έγινε στο “Γ. Καραϊσκάκης”, όπου ο Πλατανιάς απέσπασε ισοπαλία 2-2 από τον Ολυμπιακό, στο πλαίσιο του 5ου ομίλου, που θα μπορούσε να είναι και νίκη, αφού οι Κρήτες προηγούνταν ως τις καθυστερήσεις. Οι “ερυθρόλευκοι” είχαν όφελος την εμφάνιση του Ερνάνι. Στην πρώτη συμμετοχή του στην ενδεκάδα ως βασικός, ο Πορτογάλος μεσοεπιθετικός ήταν ο κορυφαίος του παιχνιδιού και σκόρερ των δύο τερμάτων της ομάδας του. Ο Πλατανιάς αιφνιδίασε για πρώτη φορά στο 29΄, όταν από λάθος του Ντα Κόστα έξω από την περιοχή ο Ράμος “έκλεψε” την μπάλα, πέρασε και τον Καπίνο και πλάσαρε σε άδεια εστία για το 0-1. Στο 47΄ ο Ερνάνι έφερε το παιχνίδι “στα ίσα” με απευθείας εκτέλεση φάουλ, αλλά στο 78΄ ο προωθημένος Μπανανά έδωσε πάλι προβάδισμα στην ομάδα του, για να διαμορφώσει το τελικό σκορ ο Πορτογάλος στο πρώτο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων, με κεφαλιά αυτή τη φορά σε εκτέλεση κόρνερ του Πάρντο.

Ξάνθη – ΑΕΚ 0-1
«Με το δεξί» μπήκε η ΑΕΚ στη φάση των ομίλων του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδας, καθώς νίκησε 1-0 την Ξάνθη στα Πηγάδια, στο πλαίσιο της πρεμιέρας του 7ου ομίλου. Η Ένωση ευτύχησε να προηγηθεί στο 51΄, όταν ο Μπουονανότε εκτέλεσε κόρνερ, ο Κρισάντους εκμεταλλεύθηκε τη σύγχυση στην άμυνα της Ξάνθης και με σουτ που δεν μπόρεσε να αποκρούσει ο Τσέναμο «έγραψε» το 0-1. Το σκορ αυτό δεν άλλαξε, παρά τις προσπάθειες των δύο ομάδων να απειλήσουν την αντίπαλη εστία, και οι «κιτρινόμαυροι» πήραν το πρώτο «τρίποντό» τους στη φάση των ομίλων.

Παναθηναϊκός – Λεβαδειακός 3-0
Ο Παναθηναϊκός ξεπέρασε γρήγορα την ήττα από τον ΠΑΟΚ στο πρωτάθλημα και με καλή εμφάνιση νίκησε 3-0 τον Λεβαδειακό στο «Απ. Νικολαΐδης», ξεκινώντας νικηφόρα τις υποχρεώσεις του στον 4ο όμιλο του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδας. Στο 16΄ το σουτ του Πράνιτς βρήκε στο δοκάρι του Βερέμκο και στο 23΄ οι «πράσινοι» κέρδισαν πέναλτι σε ανατροπή του Νίνη από τον Τριποτσέρη, το οποίο εκτέλεσε ο ίδιος ένα λεπτό αργότερα και άνοιξε το σκορ. Στο 26΄ οι «πράσινοι» διπλασίασαν με κεφαλιά του Ταυλαρίδη, που σηκώθηκε ανενόχλητος σε φάουλ του Νίνη, ενώ το τελικό σκορ διαμόρφωσε στο 77΄ με έξοχο σουτ ο Κλωναρίδης, με τον σκόρερ να τραυματίζεται σε αυτή τη φάση και να γίνεται αλλαγή!

ΠΑΟΚ – Πανθρακικός 2-0
«Με το δεξί» μπήκε ο ΠΑΟΚ στη φάση των ομίλων του Κυπέλλου Ελλάδας, καθώς νίκησε 2-0 τον Πανθρακικό στην Τούμπα, στο πλαίσιο της πρεμιέρας του 3ου ομίλου. Ο “Δικέφαλος” δυσκολεύτηκε πάντως πολύ και ο Τούντορ χρειάστηκε να επιστρατεύσει τους Μακ και Ροντρίγκες, που σκόπευε να τους ξεκουράσει. Χρειάστηκε μάλιστα να φτάσει το παιχνίδι στο 72ο λεπτό για να ανοίξει το σκορ με τον Πέλκα, ο οποίος πήρε το ριμπάουντ μετά το δοκάρι στο σουτ του Μακ. Ο Σλοβάκος δεν αστόχησε πάντως στο 86΄, οπότε και σκόραρε το δεύτερο και τελευταίο γκολ του παιχνιδιού, μετά από σουτ του Γκολάσα και απόκρουση του Πασχαλάκη.

Παναιτωλικός – Πανιώνιος 1-2
«Δύο στα δύο» για τον Πανιώνιο επί του Παναιτωλικού στο Αγρίνιο φέτος, καθώς μετά το εκκωφαντικό 5-1 για το πρωτάθλημα στις αρχές του Οκτωβρίου, σήμερα νίκησε τους «γαλαζοκίτρινους» με 2-1 και για τη φάση των ομίλων (2ος) στο Κύπελλο Ελλάδας. Οι φιλοξενούμενοι προηγήθηκαν με τον Ανσαριφάρντ στο 10΄ και διπλασίασαν με τον Χαλκιαδάκη στο 31΄, ενώ ο Παναιτωλικός το μόνο που κατόρθωσε ήταν να μειώσει με τον Κάπελ στο 74΄.

Ατρόμητος-Βέροια 2-2
Χωρίς νικητή έληξε η αναμέτρηση του Ατρομήτου με τη Βέροια για το Κύπελλο Ελλάδας, καθώς οι δύο ομάδες αναδείχθηκαν ισόπαλες 2-2 στο Περιστέρι, στο πλαίσιο της πρεμιέρας του 6ου ομίλου. Η «βασίλισσα του βορρά» πήρε κεφάλι στο σκορ στις καθυστερήσεις του πρώτου μέρους (45+2΄) με το σουτ του Μαγέφσκι, ο οποίος έστειλε την μπάλα στο βάθος της εστίας του Γκορμπούνοφ, ενώ ευτύχησε να διπλασιάσει τα τέρματά της στο 52ο λεπτό με το πέναλτι του Καϊκούτ, ο οποίος κέρδισε την «εσχάτη των ποινών» σε μαρκάρισμα του Κιβρακίδη εντός της περιοχής του Ατρομήτου. Από την πλευρά τους, οι γηπεδούχοι μείωσαν αρχικά στο 84΄ με το μακρινό σουτ του Κούρου, με την μπάλα να βρίσκει στον Πούγγουρα και να αλλάζει πορεία, καταλήγοντας στα δίχτυα του Λόπεθ και ισοφάρισαν στο 88΄ με κεφαλιά του Λαζαρίδη. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι λίγο πριν το τέλος ο Κούρος έδειξε ότι δεν μπορούσε να συνεχίσει, λόγω μυικού τραυματισμού, ενώ στις καθυστερήσεις αποβλήθηκε ο Μαρσελίνιο από τον Ατρόμητο που πάτησε τον Μαραγκό.

Αστέρας Τρίπολης – Καλλονή 4-0
Ένα πολύ εύκολο βράδυ είχε απόψε στην Τρίπολη ο Αστέρας απέναντι στην Καλλονή, την οποία νίκησε με το ευρύ 4-0 στο “Θ. Κολοκοτρώνης” στο πλαίσιο του 8ου ομίλου στο Κύπελλο Ελλάδας, δίνοντας συνέχεια στην εκτός έδρας νίκη του επί του ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα πριν από μερικές ημέρες για το πρωτάθλημα. Όπως φανερώνει το τελικό σκορ ο αγώνας ήταν μονόλογος των γηπεδούχων, που είχαν δοκάρι στο 13΄ με τον Φερνάντες και άνοιξαν το σκορ στο 21΄ με τον Λανθαρότε. Οι παίκτες του Βεργέτη έφτασαν στο δεύτερο γκολ με κεφαλιά του Σκούρτη στο 49΄, ενώ ήταν ο ίδιος παίκτης που έγραψε το 3-0 στο 71΄ με πέναλτι, που είχε κερδίσει ο ίδιος από τον Ουνγιαλίδη. Eden Hazard has squandered the decisive penalty as Stoke City deepened Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s woes with victory in the League Cup, while second-tier Sheffield Wednesday stunned Arsenal 3-0.

After Jon Walters put Stoke ahead with a fine 20-yard shot at the Britannia Stadium, Chelsea substitute Loic Remy, on for the injured Diego Costa, lashed home an injury-time equaliser to make the score 1-1.

Following a goalless period of extra time, the first nine penalties of the shootout were all scored, only for the out-of-form Hazard to see his 10th spot-kick parried by Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Belgian’s mishap condemned Mourinho’s side to their ninth defeat in all competitions this season and saw the holders exit the tournament in the fourth round.

It came hot on the heels of a 2-1 defeat at West Ham United on Saturday, which left Mourinho facing a Football Association misconduct charge after being sent to the stands, and ramped up the pressure on the Portuguese ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home game with Liverpool.

With Chelsea currently 15th in the league table and third in their Champions League group, British newspapers have speculated that Mourinho could be sacked if their fortunes do not improve quickly.

At Hillsborough, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal were well beaten by Championship side Wednesday and also lost Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott to injury in the first half.

Ross Wallace put Wednesday ahead after 27 minutes and then teed up Lucas Joao for the hosts’ second goal shortly before half-time, with Sam Hutchinson completing victory early in the second period.

Asked how his young fringe players had handled the occasion, Wenger delivered a scathing assessment, telling Sky Sports: “It was too high for them. They are not ready to play at this level, none of them.”

Acres of space

On the injuries his team suffered, he added: “We are short now because we lose Chamberlain today, we lose Walcott and we have already a few injuries.

“It is a big blow for us, of course to lose the game, but even more for the other competitions, which are very important for us, to lose two players of that stature.”

It was Wednesday’s second Premier League scalp in this season’s competition, following their third-round win at Newcastle United, and brought Arsenal’s run of four successive victories to an end.

Wenger made eight changes to the team that beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday for the trip to Hillsborough, which was a repeat of the 1993 final.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was one of only three players who kept their places, along with Petr Cech and Olivier Giroud, but he went off in the fifth minute after pulling up while running along the touchline.

Walcott replaced his England team-mate, but he in turn was forced off 13 minutes later with an apparent calf injury.

Ismael Bennacer, a 17-year-old midfielder, came on, joining Glen Kamara and Alex Iwobi in making his Arsenal debut.

Wednesday took the lead nine minutes later when a neat move down their left flank culminated in Daniel Pudil cutting the ball back for Wallace to steer a first-time shot inside the left-hand post.

Wallace teed up Wednesday’s goal in the 40th minute after a short corner, swinging over a cross from the left for striker Joao to head home.

Wednesday completed victory six minutes into the second half when Barry Bannan’s free-kick found Tom Lees in acres of space at the back post and he volleyed across goal for Hutchinson to score with his knees.

In the morning’s other matches, Everton did just enough to progress past Norwich in a 1-1 draw thanks to Leon Osman’s second-half equaliser to cancel out Sebastian Bassong’s opener, before the Toffees progressed 4-3 on penalties.

Hull City also advanced 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Premiership outfit Leicester.

Liverpool host AFC Bournemouth in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday, with Jurgen Klopp looking for his first win.

Jurgen Klopp’s quest for a first win in charge of Liverpool continues on Wednesday as AFC Bournemouth travel to Anfield in the League Cup fourth round.

Liverpool have drawn all three matches since Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers earlier this month, the latest a 1-1 draw with Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday.

That stalemate followed draws with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League and Tottenham in Klopp’s first taste of English football.

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Klopp has called for patience as he tries to instil his values on the squad, whilst also looking to shake off the fear he believes engulfs the side every time things go against them.

Five games without a win in all competitions has seen frustrations emerge, but Klopp believes progress is being made – a view echoed by vice-captain James Milner.

“It will take time and we know that,” Milner told the Liverpool Echo. “Getting his [Klopp’s] ideas across, there are certain areas he wants us to change and do better, then other areas drop off, and it’s getting it all together.

“It’s disappointing but we have to keep working on what he wants us to do, keep applying that and the longer we are together, we can gel partnerships.

“We have a very talented group of players, young and experienced, it’s there for us, we just have to build bit by bit and I’m sure we will get that.”

Facing a Bournemouth side bereft of confidence could be the perfect chance for Liverpool to get back to winning ways. Eddie Howe’s side visit Merseyside on the back of successive 5-1 defeats to Manchester City and Tottenham.

However, midfielder Marc Pugh is confident Bournemouth can bounce back at Anfield.

“I think we have to look at the positives,” he told the club’s official website. “We’ve got be brave and show the character that got us promotion last season.

“We’ve got to bounce back, show positivity and we have a massive game next week now – we have Liverpool to come and Southampton.

“We’ve got character in the dressing room to deal with the bad run we’ve got at the moment. We’ve got to show belief and courage now.”

Bournemouth are making their second trip to Anfield this season after losing 1-0 in the league in August, with a controversial Christian Benteke strike settling the match after Tommy Elphick had an early header ruled out.

PSG extended their lead at the top of Ligue 1 after a routine 4-1 win over St Etienne on Sunday, while Marseille ended a seven-game winless streak with a 2-1 triumph at Lille.

Second-placed Angers only could only manage a 0-0 home draw against Guingamp on Saturday, allowing reigning champions PSG to move seven points clear.

Third-placed Caen lost 2-0 at home to Nantes.

Layvin Kurzawa, Edinson Cavani, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Lucas Moura were on target for champions PSG.

Stefano Okaka was again among the goals to help Anderlecht to a 3-1 home win over Club Brugge on Sunday and the leadership of the Belgian league.

Okaka scored the winner on Thursday as Anderlecht beat Tottenham 2-1 in the Europa League and put his side ahead early on Sunday, with Imoh Ezekiel and Dennis Praet adding two more in the second half.

Anderlecht moved one point above Oostende and champions Ghent, who played out a 2-2 draw on Saturday, to 25 points.

Ισόπαλο χωρίς γκολ ολοκληρώθηκε το ντέρμπι του Μάντσεστερ, ανάμεσα στη Γιουνάιτεντ και τη Σίτι στο «Ολντ Τράφορντ».

Αποτέλεσμα που… πανηγυρίστηκε στο Λονδίνο, καθώς η Αρσεναλ βρίσκεται (μαζί με τους «Πολίτες») στην κορυφή της Premier League με τη συμπλήρωση 10 αγωνιστικών.

Μεγάλος άτυχος της αναμέτρησης ήταν ο νεαρός Τζέσε Λίνγκαρντ της Γιουνάιτεντ, που μπήκε ως αλλαγή στο 66΄ και στο 85΄ έστειλε τη μπάλα στο δοκάρι.

Τι κι αν προηγήθηκε με γκολάρα του Κρίστιαν Μπεντέκε στο 77′; Ούτε αυτό ήταν αρκετό για να πανηγυρίσει ο Γιούργκεν Κλοπ την πρώτη του νίκη ως προπονητής της Λίβερπουλ, καθώς η Σαουθάμπτον ισοφάρισε με τον Μανέ στο 86΄ και «πάγωσε» το «Ανφιλντ». Ετσι, με τον Γερμανό στον πάγκο της στους τρεις τελευταίους αγώνες, η Λίβερπουλ μετράει ισάριθμες ισοπαλίες.

Στη Μπόρνμουθ ξέσπασε η Τότεναμ, που συνέτριψε 5-1 εκτός έδρας τη νεοφώτιστη. Μαζί με τους «Σπερς» αφυπνίστηκε και ο Χάρι Κέιν, που πέτυχε χατ-τρικ ενώ έως τώρα είχε μόνο ένα γκολ σε εννέα αγώνες.

Απόλυτη κυρίαρχος του βορρά είναι η Σάντερλαντ, που νίκησε 3-0 τη Νιούκαστλ στο ντέρμπι του «Tyne-Wear».

Το ματς έγινε στο «Στάδιο του Φωτός» και κρίθηκε στις καθυστερήσεις του πρώτου ημιχρόνου όταν ο Κολοτσίνι ανέτρεψε τον Φλέτσερ που βρισκόταν σε προφανή θέση για γκολ και αποβλήθηκε.

Ο Ανταμ Τζόνσον άνοιξε το σκορ με πέναλτι και στη συνέχεια οι Μπίλι Τζόουνς (65΄), Στίβεν Φλέτσερ (86΄) χάρισαν στη Σάντερλαντ την έκτη διαδοχική νίκη της επί της «μισητής» αντιπάλου.
