Petrounias gives another impeccable gymnastics performance

Lefteris Petrounias earned gold at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships on Saturday and has secured himself a spot in the Rio Olympics.

The Greek champion won the rings event at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow by collecting 15,800 points to beat his Chinese opponents into second and third.

This completes a dream year for the 25-year-old gymnast who has added the Worlds gold to that in the European Championships and the European Games, having won five out of the six major international competitions he has entered within 2015.

His victory also means that he has now freed up one more Olympic spot for Greek gymnasts to grab at the Olympic qualification event to take place at Rio in April.

Με ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον ματς στην Τρίπολη ανάμεσα στον Αστέρα και τον ΠΑΟΚ ξεκίνησε το δεύτερο «πιάτο» της 9ης αγωνιστικής της Σούπερ Λιγκ. Ο «Δικέφαλος» προηγήθηκε στο πρώτο ημίχρονο, αλλά οι Αρκάδες επέστρεψαν δριμύτεροι στην επανάληψη και κατάφεραν να πανηγυρίσουν μια δίκαιη νίκη (Αστέρας Τρίπολης – ΠΑΟΚ 2-1).

Στην Ξάνθη, η ομώνυμη ομάδα είχε την ίδια… συνταγή με τον Αστέρα, και αφού είδε τον Παναιτωλικό να προηγείται, κατάφερε να το «γυρίσει» (Ξάνθη – Παναιτωλικός 3-1).

Στα Γιάννενα, ο ΠΑΣ δυσκολεύτηκε, αλλά στο τέλος πανηγύρισε τη νίκη κόντρα στον αισθητά βελτιωμένο Πανθρακικό (ΠΑΣ – Πανθρακικός 2-0).

Ισόπαλο χωρίς γκολ ολοκληρώθηκε το ντέρμπι της 9ης αγωνιστικής ανάμεσα στον Παναθηναϊκό και την ΑΕΚ, στο «Απόστολος Νικολαΐδης» με τον Γκουστάβ Πογιέτ να κάνει ντεμπούτο στον πάγκο των «κιτρινόμαυρων». Από το αποτέλεσμα ευνοημένος είναι ο… Ολυμπιακός, που αύξησε τη διαφορά του από τους «πράσινους» στους οκτώ βαθμούς και από την Ένωση στους δέκα.

Η αυλαία θα πέσει τη Δευτέρα με το παιχνίδι μεταξύ του Ηρακλή του Ατρομήτου στο Καυτανζόγλειο.

Real Madrid and Barcelona surged three points clear at the top of La Liga on Saturday when Real beat promoted Las Palmas 3-1 at home and the champions won 2-0 at Getafe.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his eighth goal of the campaign, between strikes from Isco and Jese, in a comfortable win for a depleted Real at the Bernabeu, though they did concede at home for the first time this term in Spain’s top flight.

At Getafe, Neymar stayed ahead of Ronaldo atop the scoring chart with his ninth, a superb volley to make it 2-0 after Luis Suarez hit his eighth of 2015-16 as the South American pair kept Barca motoring in the absence of injured talisman Lionel Messi.

Real and Barca each have 24 points from 10 matches, with Real ahead on goal difference.

Celta Vigo climbed above Atletico Madrid into third on 21 points after a breathtaking long-range effort from Pablo Hernandez sealed a 3-2 comeback win at Real Sociedad.

Imanol Agirretxe twice put Sociedad ahead but each time Iago Aspas levelled before Hernandez won the game a minute from time.

Fifth-placed Villarreal beat Europa League holders Sevilla 2-1 at the Madrigal thanks to goals either side of the break from Mario Gaspar and Cedric Bakambu.

The win put Villarreal level on 20 points with Atletico, who conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Deportivo La Coruna on Friday.

Valencia won 3-0 at home to city rivals Levante and climbed to sixth on 15 points thanks to a Paco Alcacer penalty and goals from Sofiane Feghouli and Zakaria Bakkali.

Despite the convincing scoreline, Valencia supporters expressed their dissatisfaction with coach Nuno and made it clear they want forward Alvaro Negredo, who has been left out of the side in recent weeks, to be reinstated.

Las Palmas are back in the top flight after a 13-year absence and initially appeared headed for a similar drubbing to the one they got last time they played at Real — a 7-0 defeat in February 2002 when Fernando Morientes hit five goals.

Isco raced on to a Casemiro pass and finished clinically past Las Palmas keeper Javi Varas to make it 1-0 in the fourth minute before Ronaldo was given room to head in Marcelo’s cross 10 minutes later.

The Canary Islands club, who are second-bottom pending the rest of the weekend’s results, managed to create some chances, however, and midfielder Hernan Santana scored with a header from a corner in the 38th minute.

It was the first goal Real had conceded at home in five La Liga outings this term but they restored their two-goal advantage five minutes later when Jese cut in from the left and cracked the ball past Varas.

Real comfortably controlled the game in the second half, content to save energy for Tuesday’s Champions League match at home to French champions Paris St Germain, before Ronaldo was denied a second goal by a brilliant Varas block at the death.

“We started the game with a lot of conviction and we were able to score two goals very quickly,” Isco told Spanish television.

“It was a shame to concede the first goal at the Bernabeu this season.”

Barca were anxious to avoid last season’s 0-0 stalemate at Getafe but had to wait until the 37th minute for Suarez to slot home after a stunning backheel layoff from Sergi Roberto.

Neymar, who has been on scintillating form in Messi’s absence, made sure of the points in the 58th when he galloped on to Sergi’s deep cross and fired a fine low shot inside the post.

“I think we played a very intelligent game,” Suarez told Spanish television. “We controlled the ball for the whole match, trying to find a way through as Getafe is a team that allows you very little space,” added the Uruguay striker.

Jose Mourinho’s future as Chelsea manager looked increasingly insecure after a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool, Philippe Coutinho scoring twice at Stamford Bridge as the champions lost a sixth Premier League game in 11.

Chelsea’s third home league reverse of the season left it in 15th place in the table with 11 points from 11 games, the worst ever start to a season by the reigning champions.

It is already 14 points behind Manchester City which needed a last-gasp Yaya Toure penalty to beat Norwich City 2-1 and retain top spot on goal difference from Arsenal, which won 3-0 at Swansea.

Toure’s spot kick spared the blushes of City goalkeeper Joe Hart who fumbled a routine catch to gift Norwich a late equaliser.

All Arsenal’s goals came after the break as they made it five league wins in succession – Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny and Joel Campbell all on target.

Leicester City are up to third thanks to a 3-2 victory at West Bromwich Albion where they trailed, with Jamie Vardy scoring for the eighth league match in a row.

Manchester United dropped to fourth after a 0-0 stalemate at Crystal Palace, its second successive goalless league draw.

Chelsea, labouring in the Champions League, out of the League Cup and as good as finished in the title race, is in free fall and Liverpool’s fans, celebrating a first league win for new manager Juergen Klopp, taunted Mourinho with chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning”.

Christian Benteke made the points safe with a low shot seven minutes from time.

“What happened in the second half was a consequence of crucial moments, moments that the stadium saw, and more than just see it, the players felt it. From then what happened was just a consequence,” Mourinho said.

Asked if he could turn around Chelsea’s unravelling season, he said cryptically: “If they allow us.”

While Chelsea lurches from crisis to crisis – it has lost nine times in all competitions including its midweek defeat on penalties by Stoke City in the League Cup which it won last season – Liverpool is buoyant.

It is on 17 points and have moved up to seventh after a run of six matches unbeaten in the league.

Fifth-placed West Ham United lost 2-0 at Watford, its first away loss of the season, while Newcastle United stayed in the bottom three after a 0-0 draw at home to Stoke City.

Βρέθηκε να χάνει μόλις από το 4ο λεπτό με το γκολ του Ραμίρεζ, όμως η Λίβερπουλ δεν πτοήθηκε και χάρη σε δύο γκολ του εκπληκτικού Κουτίνιο και ένα του Μπεντέκε πανηγύρισε την πρώτη νίκη της στο πρωτάθλημα με τον Κλοπ στο «τιμόνι», στα πλαίσια της 11ης αγωνιστικής της Premier League.

Ο Ραμίρες έδωσε νωρίς το προβάδισμα στους «μπλε», οι οποίοι έδειχναν να πατούν καλύτερα στο γήπεδο για το πρώτο δεκάλεπτο.

Από κει και πέρα όμως η Λίβερπουλ ανέβηκε και άρχισε να πιέζει, μέχρι που στις καθυστερήσεις του πρώτου ημιχρόνου ο Κουτίνιο με ένα όμορφο σουτ έξω από την περιοχή έφερε τον αγώνα στα ίσα.

Στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο, η Λίβερπουλ συνέχισε όπως ακριβώς στο πρώτο και στο 74′ ο Κουτίνιο και πάλι με όμορφη ενέργεια έδωσε προβάδισμα στους «κόκκινους».

Στην συνέχεια η Τσέλσι ανέβηκε για την ισοφάριση, όμως ο Μπεντέκε στο 83′ έδωσε τη χαριστική βολή.

Πλέον η θέση του Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο είναι πολύ δύσκολη, αφού πολλά ρεπορτάζ από το «νησί» ανέφεραν πως η θέση του κρίνεται από τον αγώνα αυτόν.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως το 2011 ήταν η τελευταία φορά που η ομάδα του Μερσεϊσάιντ κατάφερε να φύγει νικήτρια από το Λονδίνο.

Ο Γιάγια Τουρέ με πέναλτι στο 89΄ χάρισε το «τρίποντο» στη Μάντσεστερ Σίτι με τη Νόριτς και διατήρησε τους «πολίτες» στην κορυφή της βαθμολογίας.

Jose Mourinho is optimistic that his Chelsea side can turn their season around ahead of the Barclays Premier League champions’ meeting with Liverpool this weekend.

The Blues have 13 points from the first 10 matches of their title defence and suffered a midweek penalty shoot-out defeat to Stoke City in the League Cup.

Mourinho feels his team can take heart from their performance at the Britannia Stadium.

“It’s difficult – but it’s more difficult when you play very badly and lose, than playing well and losing,” he said. “They go home with sadness but with a positive feeling.

“They played well, they didn’t make many mistakes. They participated in the game a lot.”

Mourinho was pleased that Ramires has signed a new four-year deal.

“He’s one of these guys that every manager loves and I am happy the club recognised he deserves that,” Mourinho said of Ramires’ new deal.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp heads into Saturday’s match riding the crest of the wave of positivity surrounding his appointment at Anfield.

Klopp oversaw his first win in charge of Liverpool on Wednesday, a 1-0 League Cup victory over AFC Bournemouth, following three successive draws since replacing Brendan Rodgers at Anfield.

“I feel much better than after a draw,” Klopp said. “But I don’t think the other games were so much worse than today – of course, the result is the biggest difference and we did well tonight.

“From Klopp’s perspective, the most important thing is to keep Liverpool this motivated.” Jason Roberts looks ahead to Saturday’s match at Stamford Bridge.

Outgoing Football Federation Australia (FFA) chairman Frank Lowy has stepped into the Wellington Phoenix saga, saying the New Zealand club has four years to demonstrate it is an asset, not a liability to the A-League.

In a strong statement, which FFA said was issued in response to “ill-informed and inaccurate” commentary about the A-League’s future, Lowy hit back at the chorus of anger that had grown since the decision to knock back the Phoenix’s application to stay in the competition for another 10 years.

Instead, the Phoenix were offered a four-year extension to their A-League licence, widely interpreted as a temporary stay of execution.

Sydney FC has led a near-mutiny of A-League clubs who are wary of the plan to replace Wellington with a third Sydney franchise and upset at not being consulted.

But Lowy claims all club owners were told of FFA’s strategy surrounding Wellington back in April, and that he has not “heard a peep” from anyone but the Phoenix since then.

“As it stands, Phoenix has four years to demonstrate that they are an asset to the competition and not a liability, instead of simply asking for a 10-year extension to their licence,” said Lowy, who is set to be succeeded as FFA chairman next month by his son Steven.

Lowy had some choice words for Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold, who said he feared for the club’s future if a third Sydney team was introduced.

“And my advice to Graham Arnold is to focus on making Sydney FC a champion team instead of entering a debate he knows nothing about,” he said.

Lowy also took aim at Sky Blues chairman Scott Barlow, who on Wednesday said he had been assured by FFA that no new A-League licences would be issued in the near future, warning a southern Sydney team would have a catastrophic impact on his club.

Lowy said FFA was obliged to explore options to replace the Phoenix, since the A-League’s broadcast agreement requires a 10-team competition is maintained – but that no decisions have been made.

“Clearly, a new team in south Sydney is one of those options,” Lowy said.

“Discussions have also taken place about the potential for a new team in Wollongong.

“Even a new team in Victoria, Canberra or Queensland can’t be completely ruled out at this stage.

“I advised Scott that any future decision will be based on facts and figures and not emotion and asked him to provide FFA with a carefully considered submission about his club’s position.

“I also advised him that FFA would consult with his club, or any other club, affected by any future proposals.

“This is why there is no point in conducting an uninformed public debate, which simply creates confusion and unnecessary anxiety.”

Από την άλλη, ο Γιούργκεν Κλοπ προετοιμάζεται για το πρώτο του μεγάλο ματς ως τεχνικός της Λίβερπουλ, ενώ ακόμα δεν έχει γευθεί τη χαρά της νίκης στο πρωτάθλημα (δύο ισοπαλίες). Είναι όμως ένας από τους λίγους προπονητές παγκοσμίως, με θετικό ρεκόρ εναντίον του Μουρίνιο: σε τέσσερα ματς ως προπονητής της Ντόρτμουντ, ο Γερμανός έχει δύο νίκες, μία ισοπαλία και μόνο μία ήττα, έχοντας αναμετρηθεί με τον Πορτογάλο όταν ήταν στη Ρεάλ Μαδρίτης.

Κατά τα λοιπά, η πρωτοπόρος Άρσεναλ έχει δύσκολη εκτός έδρας αποστολή στην Ουαλία με αντίπαλο τη Σουόνσι. Την ίδια ώρα, η Μάντσεστερ Σίτι ελπίζει ότι θα… καθαρίσει άνετα τη Νόριτς στο «Ετιχαντ» και θα μείνει μόνη στην κορυφή, ενώ η Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ ταξιδεύει στο Λονδίνο για να αναμετρηθεί με την Κρίσταλ Πάλας, ενώ η κριτική εναντίον του Λουϊς Φαν Γκάαλ αυξάνεται ραγδαία.

Ντέρμπι κορυφής περιλαμβάνει η 11η αγωνιστική, με την οποία συνεχίζεται το προσεχές τριήμερο το ιταλικό πρωτάθλημα. Η πρωτοπόρος Ρόμα αναμετράται το βράδυ (21:45) του Σαββάτου με την Ίντερ στο «Τζιουζέπε Μεάτσα», με τις δύο ομάδες να χωρίζει απόσταση μόλις δύο βαθμών στην κατάταξη και αμφότερες να χρειάζονται το «τρίποντο» για τους δικούς τους λόγους.

Την 11η διαδοχική νίκη της στη Bundesliga, έψαχνε το βράδυ της Παρασκευής η αντίπαλος του Ολυμπιακού στο Champions League, Μπάγερν Μονάχου στην έδρα της Αϊντραχτ Φρανκφούρτης, αλλά δεν τα κατάφερε. Μάλιστα, αυτή ήταν η πρώτη φετινή βαθμολογική απώλεια για την ομάδα του Γκουαρντιόλα, που βρίσκεται πλέον οκτώ βαθμούς μπροστά από τη δεύτερη Ντόρτμουντ, με έναν αγώνα περισσότερο.

Στην Primera Division

Χρειάστηκε να περάσουν εννέα αγωνιστικές στο ισπανικό πρωτάθλημα για να… αποκατασταθεί η τάξη στην κορυφή της βαθμολογίας. Μετά την εκτός έδρας νίκη της Ρεάλ επί της Θέλτα, το περασμένο Σάββατο, οι Μαδριλένοι και η Μπαρτσελόνα ισοβαθμούν στην πρώτη θέση της κατάταξης, έχοντας «ξεφορτωθεί» -προσωρινά τουλάχιστον- τους επίδοξους… σφετεριστές. Η 10η αγωνιστική δεν προσφέρεται για ανατροπή της διαμορφωθείσας κατάστασης, αφού οι δύο μεγάλοι της Primera Division έχουν θεωρητικά εύκολες αποστολές.

Οι «μπλαουγκράνα» ταξιδεύουν στη Μαδρίτη για να αντιμετωπίσουν το Σάββατο τη Χετάφε, με τον Λουίς Ενρίκε να μην έχει και πάλι στη διάθεσή του τον τραυματία Λιονέλ Μέσι, αλλά να έχει ξεκουράσει σχεδόν όλους τους βασικούς στο χθεσινό ματς κυπέλλου με τη Βιγιανοβένσε. Από την πλευρά τους, οι «μερένγκες» φιλοξενούν το Σάββατο την εκ των ουραγών Λας Πάλμας, με τον Ράφα Μπενίτεθ να έχει μετά από περίπου ενάμιση μήνα στη διάθεσή του τον Χαμές Ροντρίγκες που αποθεραπεύθηκε.

Η Θέλτα θέλει να αφήσει πίσω της την ήττα από τη Ρεάλ (την πρώτη για την ομάδα του Βίγκο τη φετινή περίοδο) και να επανέλθει στις επιτυχίες απέναντι στη γηπεδούχο Σοσιεδάδ, ώστε να παραμείνει στην τέταρτη θέση. Σημαντικό ματς διεξάγεται στο «Μαδριγάλ» μεταξύ Βιγιαρεάλ και Σεβίλης, με τους γηπεδούχους να ψάχνουν επιστροφή στις νίκες (μετρούν ένα βαθμό σε τρεις αγώνες, αφότου βρέθηκαν μόνοι στην κορυφή) και τους Ανδαλουσιάνους να επιθυμούν να δώσουν συνέχεια στο θετικό σερί που «τρέχουν» μετά το πολύ κακό ξεκίνημα. Τοπικό ντέρμπι, τέλος, θα γίνει στο «Μεστάγια», όπου η Βαλένθια φιλοξενεί τη συμπολίτισσα Λεβάντε.

Η αυλαία της αγωνιστικής άνοιξε το βράδυ της Παρασκευής με μία σπουδαία αναμέτρηση στο «Ριαθόρ», όπου η φορμαρισμένη Λα Κορούνια του παλιού μας γνώριμου από τη θητεία του στον ΠΑΟΚ, Λούκας, κράτησε στο 1-1 την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης.

Οι «ροχιμπλάνκος» χρειάζονταν τη νίκη για να διατηρηθούν σε «απόσταση βολής» από την κορυφή και ενώ προηγήθηκαν με τον Τιάγκο στο 34′ δεν κατάφεραν να κρατήσουν το σκορ.

Η Ντεπορτίβο στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο ήταν πολύ επιθετική και πιεστική και με πέτυχε ένα εκπληκτικό γκολ με τον Λούκας στο 77′, ισοφαρίζοντας σε 1-1. Μάλιστα, οι γηπεδούχοι θα μπορούσαν να είχαν πάρει και τη νίκη, αλλά το σουτ του Φαϊσάλ Φάιρ στο 80′ σταμάτησε στο οριζόντιο δοκάρι του Ομπλάκ.

Στο Championnat…

Ένα τέρμα του Ανχελ Ντι Μαρία στο 75ο λεπτό της αναμέτρησης ήταν αρκετό για να δώσει τη νίκη με 1-0 στην Παρί Σεν Ζερμέν, στην εκτός έδρας αναμέτρηση κόντρα στη Ρεν για τη 12η αγωνιστική του πρωταθλήματος. Με αυτή τη νίκη της η ομάδα της πρωτεύουσας απέκτησε διαφορά δέκα βαθμών από τη δεύτερη θέση στην κούρσα για τον τίτλο.

Παράλληλα, η «νεοφώτιστη» Ανζέ, που αποτελεί την ευχάριστη έκπληξη της διοργάνωσης, δοκιμάζεται στο Πριγκηπάτο με αντίπαλο την Μονακό, ενώ η Καέν -που επίσης εντυπωσιάζει- έχει εκτός έδρας αποστολή στην Κορσική με την Μπαστιά.

Languishing in 15th place Chelsea have looked a pale shadow of the side who romped to last season’s Barclays Premier League title. Ahead of their early Saturday match with Liverpool, tactics expert Adrian Clarke takes a closer look at why they’re struggling.

Jose Mourinho’s squad looks just as strong as last season and he is deploying the same formation and tactical approach. So why have Chelsea’s performances been so inferior this term?

In base terms, the players are not running for one another with quite the same intensity.

Tracking data suggests they are covering almost as much ground as during their title-winning campaign, but to the naked eye their energy levels are not quite the same, and the stats back this up.

During the first 10 matches only once have the champions exceeded the average number of sprints they made per match in the corresponding spell last season. They have topped the 500 mark on just one occasion.

It is unfair to compare those numbers with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who made an incredible 614 sprints recently at White Hart Lane, because they do not have the same pressing style as the Reds.

However, it is not unreasonable to suggest the Blues have not closed opponents down with the same bite, enthusiasm or collective discipline as they did in 2014/15.

Working a fraction less hard without the ball, they are conceding more fouls, chances, and most importantly of all, goals.

In possession the fluency and quality of their play has also dropped. At the Boleyn Ground last weekend Chelsea’s passing and movement lacked sharpness, and that has been a familiar story.

With fewer dynamic forward runs being made on and off the ball, the Blues have found it tougher to stretch well-organised opponents. If the man in possession does not have options or commit defenders, attacks will slow down, and that is what we have seen.
Fine margins can make a huge difference at the highest level. It only takes a small dip in focus or application for a ripple effect to occur. To revive their form, Chelsea’s players must regain a willingness to push themselves to the limit.

They had that “edge” last year, but of late it has looked blunted.

Unexpected fragility

Partly a by-product of the mindset detailed above, the defending of crosses has been a big problem for Chelsea.

Ten of the 19 league goals they have let in have stemmed from balls whipped into the penalty area from wide. No team in the top flight have conceded more headed goals than Chelsea’s six, which is the same number that was scored against them in the whole of last season.

Both full-backs have been out of sorts. Branislav Ivanovic was targeted in the early weeks, with five goals in as many matches originating from crosses delivered down his side.

Although less vulnerable in one-on-one situations, left-back Cesar Azpilicueta’s covering at the far post has also been below par. His positioning has been questionable.

A constantly changing back five has not helped. Mourinho selected the same goalkeeper and back four (Thibaut Courtois, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, John Terry and Gary Cahill) for the first eight matches last season, with a suspension enforcing his first change.

In 2015/16, Chelsea have fielded eight different back fives in 10 BPL contests. No one combination has featured more than twice, and Mourinho’s four regular defenders from the title-winning campaign have lined up together just three times.

Tinkering regularly with defensive personnel can be unsettling. When you consider how many changes have occurred, it is perhaps less of a surprise the rearguard has lacked its usual compactness.

It is also interesting to note that Terry was on the pitch for just two of the six headers that have been conceded. The Blues’ captain’s positioning and organisational skills remain valuable to Chelsea.

Falling stars
Ten matches in and last season’s star individuals are still struggling to replicate the standards they set en route to the 2014/15 title.

Cesc Fabregas is a good example. After 10 BPL matches the Spain playmaker had laid on nine assists last season. This season, he has one.
From a defensive perspective his partnership with Nemanja Matic has not looked as solid either. Both have been guilty of letting their runners go at key junctures, with rivals experiencing far more joy driving through central areas.

Last season’s Barclays Footballer of the Year, Eden Hazard, is another who has not hit top gear.

Statistically, the Belgian has created more chances, one every 28 minutes (up from 34 minutes last term) but a spark has been missing from his play.

Driving into the penalty area less frequently, his goal threat has diminished.

Chelsea’s disappointing form cannot be attributed to any one sole factor, but the key issue, as I see it, is a downturn in drive. On and off the ball the Blues have been 5% short compared with last term. Once that has remedied they are sure to climb the table.

Saturday’s match with Liverpool is an ideal opportunity for them to rediscover the tempo that took them so far last season.

Against a team who will press them fervently, playing the match at a high pace, it is imperative the Blues are switched on and ready to match their opponents’ intensity. It may bring the best out of them.

From a tactical perspective it is important that Chelsea’s engine-room pairing marshal Liverpool’s floating midfielders, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana, closely. They will constantly seek to find space between the lines.

Out wide, they must also work harder at stopping crosses being sent into the box. In the shape of Divock Origi, or if he is fit, Christian Benteke, Liverpool possess an aerial threat.

Going forward, Willian will be a key man. He has been the pick of Chelsea’s attackers this season, posing a constant threat with his running power and the Brazilian’s pinpoint set-pieces will also be a concern for Klopp.

With both managers eyeing a victory that could kickstart their respective league campaigns, this should be one of the most fiercely contested encounters of the season so far.
In attack Diego Costa has struggled to hit the back of the net. In fairness to the forward, the service into him has not been as early or accurate as it was in 2014/15 (meaning he has had fewer sights of goal) but even so, his all-round play has been less menacing.

Has he subconsciously become complacent? With no serious competition for his starting berth it is something to consider.
