With three straight wins and five of the next seven games at home, the only way is up for Western Sydney Wanderers, according to coach Tony Popovic.

The Wanderers again head home with three points after cruising past Melbourne City 3-0 on Friday – less than a week after they won away to Newcastle Jets – and Popovic’s men have surged into third in the A-League with a trio of victories.

It is a far cry from the start of the season, where they failed to win in their opening three matches and Popovic reckons there is more improvement to come.
Resurgent Wanderers thrash City in Melbourne

“Three [wins] on the spin, regardless of when you do it, how you do it, is always a very good achievement,” he said at his post-match media conference.
“So we have to acknowledge that it’s two consecutive away wins too, it’s not easy to do and I envisage us getting better and hopefully improved performances can maintain the results.”

Popovic described the win at AAMI Park as his side’s most complete performance of the fledgling campaign.

“I think our intent was very good from the outset,” the coach said.

“We were very positive, we controlled the game and then we got our rewards for that in the second half… so that was pleasing to see that we could put away those chances.”

Mitch Nichols opened the scoring for the Wanderers just after half-time, while marquee striker Federico Piovaccari ended a five-game goalless run with a controversial second on the hour mark before Mark Bridge completed the win in the closing stages.

Popovic insisted he never lost faith in Piovaccari, despite the Italian’s stuttering start in Australia.
“‘Pio’ is like our club, our team. We’ve got faith in him as we had [in the entire club] after three games when we didn’t win,” Popovic said.

“We know what direction we’re heading. We didn’t get too despondent after the first three games. We won’t get carried away now either.”

Nichols – another one of Popovic’s signings since last season – has started far better, with the attacking midfielder notching his third goal in six matches on Friday.

But in a warning to the Wanderers’ A-League rivals, Popovic also expects improvement from the former Perth Glory, Melbourne Victory and Brisbane Roar man.

“I think he’s just touched the surface,” Popovic said.

“You know, he’s maturing more now as a player, he’s 26 years of age. He’s starting to understand the game a lot better, read the game better and I think there’s a lot more to come from him.”

Newcastle Jets ready to silence Central Coast Mariners in F3 derby

untitled

FORMER Sunderland striker and Central Coast Mariners star Roy O’Donovan criticised the Jets for being negative and labelled their football ugly.

Assistant coach John Hutchinson taunted the Jets about the wooden spoon, and coach Tony Walmsley said he wants to “own Hunter Stadium”.

Normally it would be red rag to a bull. The Jets, however, are determined for their football to do the talking when they take on their arch rivals in the F3 derby on Saturday night.

“Reading the media, they have taken a different approach, undermining us,” Jets keeper Mark Birighitti said. “That’s not us.

“We want to do our talking on the football pitch. It would be great to get three points. That would be a statement on who is in charge of the Hunter region.”

The Jets haven’t taken three points from the derby since a 2-1 triumph in 2012.

“The boys are prepared for it and really looking forward to it,” Birighitti said.

“We did a video session on them on Friday.

“There is definitely areas in their game that we can exploit and really hurt them.

See your ad here
“They are there for the taking.”

The Jets are third on nine points, five places and five points above the Mariners.

“At the start of the season we set out some goals which were broken into six-week cycles,” the keeper said.

“If we can get a win on the weekend, we will have achieved that [points] goal.

“We want to win all our home games.

“We haven’t won the past two and that is just not good enough for a club moving forward.”

The Jets led Western Sydney 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining on their home turf last round before conceding two late goals.

“Going 1-0 up with 15 minutes to go, it was disappointing that we couldn’t hold out,” Birighitti said.

“Basic individual errors, lapses in concentration, goal conceded in the last 5-10 minutes . . . you learn from your mistakes.”

O’Donovan scored with a header at the near post to snatch the Mariners a 1-all draw against Wellington Phoenix last round and take his tally to three in five games.

“Attacking-wise they have a lot of weapons,” Birighitti said. “In saying that, they leave a lot of space behind and their back four can be a little bit vulnerable at times.

“If we can win the second ball in midfield and play through the lines, we have players good enough to hurt them.”

Birighitti requires more dental work after dislodging five teeth and needing 48 stitches after being kicked in the face by Sydney striker Shane Smeltz a month ago.

“I think I get my mouthguard next week, so I’ll be wearing a mouthguard for the rest of the season. We’ll take it from there,” he said.

Birighitti is lining up for his third game since the injury.

“People were saying, ‘how are you going to recover from it mentally?’ For me, mentally, it’s not an issue,” he said.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero targets return against Liverpool

untitled

The Premier League leaders host Liverpool on 21 November – live on Sky Sports – and, with Wilfried Bony also sidelined with an injury sustained in Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa, manager Manuel Pellegrini will be cheered by Aguero’s upbeat fitness bulletin.

Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has insisted that he is likely to feature against Liverpool after the worldwide break. The blues were really missing his presence at the weekend as the league leaders were unable to find the breakthrough in a game that saw Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne miss a couple of sitters. “There’s still more to go but getting better by the day”, Aguero wrote in his post.

“It was a good occasion to do it. It was City, and City were full of confidence, they had a brilliant game in Sevilla, so I think it’s a good point to work on”.

“I still need to work hard for another week and if not this week, then maybe next, I hope to start training with the rest of the lads and so my target is Liverpool. It would be easier for us to have a few strikers available”.

Sergio Aguero, who was reduced to tears after picking up a hamstring injury 24 hours before Silva was struck down, revealed earlier this week that he too is hoping to return against the Reds.

“It’s important for the squad to win the amount of games we did and not to lose in this part of the season when we didn’t have important players”, he added.

Aguero, who hit 26 league goals last term, was just hitting top form when he tore his hamstring while playing for his country in a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador.

FIFA World Cup qualifier:Australia defeats Kyrgyzstan 3-0 in Canberra

Canberra The Socceroos shrugged off the disappointment of a last start defeat in Jordan to outclass Kyrgyzstan for a 3-0 win here on Thursday night, a result which takes them to within a point of the Jordanians at the top of the World Cup qualifying group.

The victory sets up Ange Postecoglou’s team for the psychologically and logistically difficult trip to Bangladesh, where they can take another step on the road to Russia 2018 by winning next Tuesday.

Australia was by far the better team, but like so many of these matches against lower ranked opponents, their quality does not ensure anything until they get in front, forcing their opponents to try to come out and play.

Kyrgyzstan were obdurate; Australia huffed and puffed and bluffed and threatened, but for 40 minutes they could not quite blow the Kyrgyzstan house down.

The structure creaked, rattled and rolled as the Central Asians battened the hatches and dug in for the storm that broke from the opening whistle when the Socceroos, as their coach had promised they would, attacked from the start.

Kyrgyzstan shook to their foundations, literally, when Tim Cahill hit the bar with a beautifully weighted curling shot in the 15th minute after Aaron Mooy’s driving run towards goal was blocked and the ball fell to his feet. It looked as if the edifice would topple at any minute.

But somehow it didn’t: a combination of inaccurate finishing, desperate defending and sheer bad luck prevented Australia from building what should have been a commanding lead inside the first half-hour.

But the visitors’ good fortune and heroics could not last an entire half and their luck ran out five minutes before half-time.

Nathan Burns, who had been introduced as a substitute for the injured Tomi Juric just short of the half-hour mark, was upended by Islam Shamshiev in the penalty area. The South Korean referee, Kim Sang Woo, pointed to the spot and Mile Jedinak, Australia’s captain, stepped up to power a shot right of Pavel Matiash in the Kyrgyzstan goal.

It was a score that certainly eased the nerves of the players and coaching staff, not to mention the crowd, which, due to traffic congestion, was arriving in dribs and drabs throughout the opening half.

But it was the least that Australia deserved.

Postecoglou had said that even before the withdrawals through injury of players like Matty Spiranovic and Mathew Leckie in the lead-up to this game, he was inclined to make changes, having been unimpressed with the way his players had performed in the Middle East last time out.

No-one quite expected the side he did put out, however. Australia went into this game  loaded with central midfielders (Jedinak, Mark Milligan, Aaron Mooy and Massimo Luongo all started) and two strikers in a sort of 4-2-2-2, with Mooy and Luongo pulling into wider areas and the full-backs, particularly debutant James Meredith on the left, getting forward.

They dominated right from the outset, Cahill being denied by Matiash’s tip over after barely a minute.

Mooy has improved by leaps and bounds these past 18 months, and the Melbourne City midfielder looks increasingly at home in a Socceroo shirt. It was his blocked shot after a surging Jedinak run that led to Cahill’s effort that struck the bar.

Australia had a scare shortly after during one of the visitors’ rare forward forays, when Viktor Maier went down after a Meredith challenge but play was waved on.

The injured Juric made way for Burns and Australia benefitted as a result, the FC Tokyo striker’s mobility making him more of a threat when he got on the ball.

Matiash produced a fine double save to deny Cahill and Luongo, then heroic defending by Azamat Baimatov thwarted Mooy’s full-blooded drive.

Australia almost took the lead in the 37th minute when another fine pass from Mooy found Burns. Though his shot was saved, Milligan could not get on to the rebound at close range and the ball was scrambled to safety.

Postecolgou didn’t have to wait long for the advantage to be doubled and it was Cahill who was on target with his 42nd international goal.

Unusually in his case, it came on the ground, and Mooy was once again heavily involved. A pass off the outside of his foot played his teammate through, giving Cahill the space to finish off nicely with a shot past Matiash.

On the hour mark, the Canberra faithful got what they wanted, when local boy made good Tom Rogic replaced Jedinak.

But when the third goal came in the 69th minute it was once again Mooy who was the creator, his corner skimming in off the head of Ildar Amirov for an own goal.

Australia queued up to get a fourth but Matiash stood firm, denying Cahill’s close-range effort once more right at the death.

Anthony Mundine receives beating from Charles Hatley

15ff47e9fe8ed96bf0e11324ad4cf864

The 40-year-old said before the fight it could be his last.

Anthony Mundine lost his WBC Silver super welterweight boxing title fight against American Charles Hatley in Melbourne last night.

The fight was stopped in the 11th round just as Mundine’s camp threw the towel in, handing Hatley a TKO win.

The 40-year-old Australian never recovered from a brutal second round at the Melbourne Convention Centre when he was knocked down three times by the Texan.

Mundine showed courage to fight on and even sent Hatley briefly to the deck in the 10th round but he couldn’t secure the knockout he needed to beat his 29-year-old opponent.

It brings Hatley’s record to 26-1. Mundine, a four-time world champion, said prior to the fight that a loss could be mean the end of his career.

But there is a chance that he could be lured by a lucrative purse to take on Australian arch-rival Danny Green.

Mundine said a rematch with Green, who he beat in 2006 in the most lucrative fight ever held in Australia, could still happen.

“We’ll see if the deal’s right,” he said.

“I feel fine – it’s not like I’m super beat up but he had a great game plan and he stuck to it. I couldn’t tag him and he caught me early. Congratulations to him. I wanted to fight the best but it didn’t go my way.”

“They caught me enough to put me off balance but I wasn’t hurt but the corner thought they did the right thing,” Mundine said. The loss scuppered hopes of landing a big-money world title fight against an international name like Miguel Cotto and Mundine said it could mean the end of his 15-year career.

“It could be my final fight but maybe not,” Mundine said.

“I just want to get my body right because I had a lot of injuries coming into this fight and I will see what happens.”

Mundine was gracious in his defeat, praising Hatley. “I take my hat off,” Mundine said.

“Charles boxed well and moved well. He had good distance and range and I got caught early reaching for him.

“I’m just disappointed; I came in with high expectations but Hatley fought a better fight and I was a bit off.”

Hatley will now likely fight for the world championship vacated by Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Earlier, former Richmond AFL player Shane Tuck was taken to hospital after being knocked out during his professional boxing debut.

The ex-Tigers midfielder was caught on the chin with a hard right from Lucas Miller in the fourth round of their fight last night on the undercard of the Mundine-Hatley fight.

Tuck, who played 173 games for Richmond before retiring at the end of the 2013 season, stayed down in the care of his concerned support team.

He was taken out of the ring on a stretcher and an ambulance was called, although a spokesman said he was later sitting up and talking.

Newcastle Jets sale: Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson still wants A-League club

untitled

SCOTTISH millionaire Stephen Thompson has reaffirmed his interest in buying the Newcastle Jets.

In a rare interview, the Dundee United chairman told the Newcastle Herald on Monday that talks with Football Federation Australia were continuing and he remained hopeful of a positive outcome.

The FFA announced on September 22 that “broad terms of the sale have been agreed”, but has reopened discussions with other parties after Thompson’s consortium did not meet an October 31 deadline to deliver on the $4million acquisition fee.

“We are still very interested,” Thompson, pictured, said. “We have to redo our financial model.

“In sport, things move very fast. Things are fluid.

“We are reassessing the financial model we put together. That is basically where we are.

“FFA wanted an answer. We said we can’t give you one just now.

“We have spent a lot of time and money on this so far.

‘‘I have visited Newcastle five times since December and met various people. I’m putting the effort in.’’

See your ad here
FFA took control of the Jets in May after ousting Nathan Tinkler, but the governing body had been intent on selling the franchise before the 2015-16 season kicked off.

It will continue to bankroll the club but has made it clear ‘‘it’s not in our plans to own the Jets or any other A-League team’’.

It is understood FFA is talking to another possible buyer overseas, but sources have insisted it ‘‘will not be a fire sale’’.

The Herald has been told that the Jets, despite securing a number of new sponsors and operating on a shoestring budget, are set to lose more than $1 million this season.

‘‘I don’t believe a football club should be an endless money pit,’’ Thompson said.

‘‘It is wrong for the club.

‘‘You will end up back in the same situation three or four years down the line. The business has to be profitable or at least break even for it to be sustainable.’’

FFA have started preliminary work on a new broadcast deal due to start in 2017 that is expected to significantly improve the bottom line for clubs.

‘‘You can’t rely on just that,’’ Thompson said.

‘‘You need to engage properly in the community.

‘‘I am a football person through and through.

‘‘I have been up to meet people privately in the Newcastle community, business folk and get a feel for the place. There is no doubt it is going to take time to get everyone to re-engage with the club. Ultimately it’s the locals’ club.

‘‘My dad [who preceded Thompson as Dundee United chairman] once said: ‘The fans are the one constant that will always be there’.

‘‘Emotionally it is their club. I get all that completely.’’

Aside from negotiations with FFA, Thompson has come under pressure in Scotland.

Dundee United are last on the ladder by three points in the Scottish Premier League ladder. He has sacked a coach, sold star players and has come under fire from Tangerines fans.

‘‘We are not doing well this season. That happens in football,’’ he said. ‘‘There is no doubt that it has been a very, very tough year, and I have had to address a number of issues here. We are going to have to bring in players before the transfer window closes in January. We have spent eight years in the top six, played in four cup finals; you can’t judge us on the past three months.

‘‘The facts are Dundee’s debt was once £7.4 million [$15.8 million], now it’s down to £1.2 million in six years.

‘‘We never went through an administration process. That is something I am quite proud of.

‘‘Every creditor has always been paid.

‘‘Our youth academy is the envy of most in our game in Scotland, and we have invested in the whole facility this year. We had issues with the fans because we sold two players at the end of January just before the cup final.

‘‘You do it for the right reasons. We are trying to get rid of the debt and do business.

‘‘It is a difficult fine line.

‘‘I have sat down with the supporters groups in the past few weeks. We had an open and frank discussion on where we are so we can move on for the sake of the club.

‘‘That is exactly what I would do in Newcastle.’’

Neymar, Luis Suarez earn Barcelona win to go top; Athletic beat Espanyol

untitled

Neymar and Luis Suarez continued their fine goal-scoring form for Barcelona as Luis Enrique’s side provisionally moved top of La Liga with a hard-fought 3-0 win over Villarreal at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

The Brazil captain broke a determined Villarreal defence after a fine Sergio Busquets pass on the hour, while Suarez netted from the penalty spot 10 minutes later.

Neymar then capped the win with a goal-of-the-season contender, flicking Suarez’s cross over his head with a stunning turn and volleying in five minutes from time to cap a memorable display.

An Inaki Williams-inspired Athletic Bilbao continued their upturn in form after beating Espanyol 2-1 to record a fifth consecutive win in all competitions.

Williams netted his fifth goal in a week in spectacular fashion by flicking the ball over Enzo Roco and firing a volley into the top corner after just eight minutes.

Hernan Perez levelled for Espanyol early in the second period, but Raul Garcia’s header 26 minutes from time handed the Basques a deserved three points.
