Postecoglou: I should have taken Brilliante to Brazil

Socceroos coach admits his regret for not taking Josh Brilliante to the World Cup.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he may have erred in leaving out former Newcastle Jets defender-midfielder Josh Brilliante from Australia’s World Cup squad in Brazil.

Brilliante signed on for Italian Serie A side Fiorentina during the offseason, and Athens-born Postecoglou admitted dropping him from the 30-man squad was one of the toughest decisions of his life.

“Josh was extremely unlucky to miss the World Cup squad,” Postecoglou said exclusively on FFA TV. “Probably in retrospect I might have even erred in not taking him.”

Postecoglou said he was impressed with the form the 21-year-old is showing for his new club, and it is expected that Brilliante will be settled into a Socceroos squad which will take part in the AFC Asian Cup, when it features on home soil in January.

“It’s great. He’s hit the ground running [at Fiorentina] at a big club in a tier-one competition in Serie A,” Postecoglou said.

“He’s made a breakthrough which is fantastic. And we’ll certainly move that along by giving him some international exposure … importantly it’s great for us.”
Brilliante has been named in a 20-man squad set to play Belgium and Saudi Arabia in Europe next month.

Kyrgios defeats 21st seed to progress in US Open

kyrgios%20US%20open

Tennis young gun Nick Kyrgios has defeated world number 21 Mikhail Youzhny to make it into the second round of the US Open.

Teenage tennis sensation Nick Kyrgios came within a rant of US Open disqualification in a stormy first round win over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny.

Kyrgios, the man who famously sent Rafael Nadal careering out of Wimbledon this year, picked up three code violations in his gruelling 7-5 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-1) over the 21st seeded Youzhny, a semi-finalist in 2006 and 2010.

When he collected his third early in the fourth set after a series of rowdy outbursts, he was just another warning away from being kicked out.

He smashed a ball out of the stadium in frustration in the second set, then dropped the F-bomb before the chair umpire issued a game penalty for another audible obscenity.

“I guess it was just heat of the moment,” said world No 60 Kyrgios, a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon.

“I was frustrated the way I was playing, and, yeah, it was just all that sort of stuff. It was just an outburst, and hopefully I will be able to control that the next time I play.”

Kyrgios fired 26 aces and 68 winners against Youzhny and next meets experienced Italian Andreas Seppi.

He said his outbursts on court are all part of having high expectations. “I have been an emotional player most of my career. Maybe I will be able to manage it in the future. It’s a work in progress. It’s something that’s always been there.”

Youzhny had beaten Nadal and fellow former Open champions and world No 1s Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt in past visits to Flushing Meadows and only two weeks ago stopped the extraordinary giant-killing run of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Cincinnati.

But the world No 23 had no answer to Kyrgios’s awesome firepower as the Australian crunched 26 aces and 68 winners in the four-set demolition job on Show Court 17.

Apart from overcoming Youzhny’s class and vast experience, Kyrgios defied searing heat, a nagging left arm injury and three code violations to join fellow Australians Matt Ebden and Anastastia Rodionova in the second round.

Ebden beat German Tobias Kamke 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-2), while Rodionova surprised rising Italian Camila Giorgi 1-6 7-5 6-3 on a superb three-from-three opening day for Australia.

But 19-year-old Kyrgios stole much of the attention with his antics but had to seek treatment in both the first and third sets to have the forearm that supports his two-handed backhand vigorously rubbed.

But somehow he still managed to prevail against one of the most seasoned players on tour.

Kyrgios took the opening set after claiming the only service break in the 11th game.

After nervously coughing up his first two double-faults of the match when serving for it at 6-5 and 40-love, Kyrgios steadied to close out the set with an unreturnable serve.

Australia’s Wimbledon quarter-finalist unleashed a stinging backhand return to break Youzhny in the first game of the second set and had two further chances points to seize a double break at 3-1.

The let-off could have been costly as the Russian reeled off three straight games to lead 5-4, only for Kyrgios to calmly recover from 15-30 down to level at 5-5.

Kyrgios took control of the tiebreaker, opening up a 5-1 advantage before pocketing the set for a two-sets-to-love lead with a massive ace followed by another unreturnable delivery.

The youngster lapsed to drop serve twice as Youzhny grabbed the third set and then appeared poised to push the match to a deciding fifth set.

But after digging in to save set points serving at 4-5 in a marathon 10th game, Kyrgios broke the Russian for a third time with a clean backhand winner down the line.

Showing maturity beyond his years, Kyrgios raced through the fourth-set tiebreaker 7-1 to clinch victory after three hours and three minutes.

While Youzhny is no Nadal, the 32-year-old entered the match with credentials and form.

His recent success over Tsonga came the week after the Frenchman had taken down Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Grigor Dimitrov and Roger Federer in consecutive matches to win the Toronto Masters.

Kyrgios’ impressive victory also came a year after Youzhny denied his Davis Cup teammate a place in the quarter-finals with a dogged five-set comeback win over Hewitt.

Μanchester City sink Liverpool 3-1

original

Stevan Jovetic scored twice as Manchester City issued a statement of intent with a 3-1 Barclays Premier League victory over Liverpool on Monday.

The defending champions had to withstand some pressure from the side they beat to the title last season, but underlined their clinical touch in front of goal.

Jovetic opened his account for the season in the closing minutes of the first half with a close-range finish and doubled his tally to cap a flowing City move before the hour.

Sergio Aguero’s first act after replacing the injured Edin Dzeko in the second half was to strike a third goal for the hosts as he slid a low shot out of Simon Mignolet’s reach.

Pablo Zabaleta’s late own goal, which came after Joe Hart had parried substitute Rickie Lambert’s close-range header, was scant consolation for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

With new signing Mario Balotelli watching on after completing his move from Milan, Liverpool gave a debut to Alberto Moreno, while Joe Allen returned for Lucas in midfield.

Zabaleta’s recall for City enabled Gael Clichy to revert to left-back and the 29-year-old was at the heart of the hosts’ good early play.

Dzeko and Yaya Toure both had sights of goal in the opening 15 minutes thanks to Clichy crosses, but neither was able to stretch Mignolet.

Liverpool’s midfield began to dominate possession following a cagey start and Daniel Sturridge finally tested Hart in the33rd minute.

Steven Gerrard executed a perfect pass to find the striker at the back post but, having escaped the attentions of Vincent Kompany, his fierce left-foot shot was pushed away.

Hart’s efforts proved crucial for City as they went on to open the scoring through Jovetic with four minutes of the half remaining.

As Moreno dallied on a knockdown from Dejan Lovren inside the Liverpool penalty area, the 24-year-old nipped in and lashed the ball through the legs of Mignolet.

Rodgers’ side had the ball in the net four minutes after the break but the linesman’s flag denied Sturridge, much to the relief of Kompany who had misjudged a Glen Johnson cross.

To rub salt into the Liverpool wounds City promptly doubled their lead as Jovetic completed a neat one-two with Samir Nasri with a calm finish.

The striker’s flick ran perfectly into the Frenchman’s stride, and Nasri returned the ball to his unmarked team-mate to apply the finish.

The introduction of debutant Lazar Markovic breathed some life back into Liverpool, but a ruthless City outfit extended their lead even further in the 69th minute as Jovetic turned provider.

His pass released Aguero in behind the Liverpool defence and the Argentine confidently fired low into the back of the net, just 23 seconds after replacing Dzeko.

Liverpool, who have now only won once in their last nine visits to City, pulled one back with seven minutes to play as Zabaleta nudged the ball into his own goal.

Sturridge showed good strength on the right and delivered a perfect cross to Lambert, whose header was saved by Hart before the loose ball struck the defender on the knee and dropped over the line.

There was further bad news for Liverpool as Johnson hobbled off after all three substitutions had been made, while Moreno appeared to turn his ankle in injury time but carried on.

Can Liverpool down Manchester City?

untitled

When his Liverpool side take on Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night, Brendan Rodgers is hopeful of an open contest that will allow such talents to shine.

Liverpool’s front three of Philippe Coutinho, Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge, deployed last weekend against Southampton, are set to start again, with the latter two on target in a 2-1 opening win at Anfield. Rodgers is looking at them to be as effective against the Barclays Premier League champions.

“If you look at both sets of players, there’s lots of invention and creativity – both teams will be creative and want to score goals,” Rodgers said. “We know we need to be compact and solid when we haven’t got the ball, we need to be aggressive and press well. That’s the nature of our game.

“We know we have the freedom, movement and pace that can hurt teams. We understand it’s early on, but it’ll be a good game for sure. It’s been a great start to the league campaign.”

The last time the teams met competitively, Liverpool secured a gripping 3-2 victory on Merseyside that looked to have tipped the balance of last season’s title battle in their favour. But City held their nerve, as Rodgers’ men dropped points against Chelsea and Crystal Palace, to win a second Barclays Premier League crown in three seasons by two points.

Both sides flexed their muscles in a pre-season joust in New York, when Liverpool twice came from behind to win on penalties. By that time, Luis Suarez had completed his big-money move to Barcelona, a loss that City manager Manuel Pellegrini believes will be keenly felt by a Liverpool squad he still rates very highly.

“I watched Liverpool’s game [against Southampton] and we played against them in the United States,” he said. “We know what they are doing.

“It’s difficult to say after one game but Liverpool will always miss Suarez, he was a very important player. They have brought a lot of important new players and continue being a very strong squad also.”

City remain without striker Alvaro Negredo due to a broken foot, but Pellegrini has increased options elsewhere as his returning World Cup stars build their fitness. Pablo Zabaleta or Bacary Sagna are likely to displace Gael Clichy, who featured at right-back in their opening 2-0 win at Newcastle United.

Sergio Aguero came off the bench to complete the scoring at St James’ Park and will push Stevan Jovetic for the starting berth alongside Edin Dzeko in attack. New signing Eliaquim Mangala is not yet fit to play.

Terry Antonis gets Socceroos call up

antonis

After lengthy injury setbacks, Sydney FC young gun Terry Antonis has been given a chance on the international stage.

After nine months out of the game, Terry Antonis’ inclusion in the Socceroos friendly squad came as quite a shock.

But one person who can definitely understand the ability of the Greek Australian player is Ange Postecoglou.

As an A-League coach for Brisbane Roar and then Melbourne Victory, Postecoglou was able to see the young star in action on a weekly basis when he was fit and healthy. After he fell out of favour with his Sydney FC coach, Ange Postecoglou witnessed not frustration from Antonis, but determination to earn his respect back, not force it.

Those qualities made the decision simple.

With a number of key World Cup Socceroos sidelined thanks to injury, Postecoglou had another tough squad selection for the team’s upcoming friendlies.

He used the opportunity to test some players who haven’t had the limelight shone on them for a while.

“We’re always going to have injuries, that’s the reason we need to create some real depth … so that leading into the Asian Cup we have some options,”
Postecoglou said on announcing his provisional team.

“I felt we didn’t have a lot of options going into the World Cup.

“So with that in mind, we’ve made a number of changes for the upcoming friendlies and given the opportunity to a number of players who haven’t been involved or have been on the periphery to get some game time and put their case forward.”

For Antonis, the selection has been a way to make up for missing a big opportunity. Last June the Sky Blues player ruptured his thigh tendon, and injury that ruled him out of the Under 20s World Cup.

Now, with the selection sinking in, the 20-year-old is thinking ahead.

“I’m really excited and happy to be called up,” he said.

“It’s an honour to be selected to go and play for your country and I can’t wait to get into camp.”

Antonis joins Tomi Juric, Brad Smith, Chris Herd, Trent Sainsbury and Bailey Wright as newbies to the national squad.

Some of the best still made the cut, including World Cup superstar Tim Cahill and Mile Jedinac, but there are talent deficiencies as seven World Cup squad members have been sidelined: defenders Rhys Williams (knee), Curtis Good (hip flexor), Ivan Franjic (knee) and Matthew Spiranovic (ankle), playmaker Tom Rogic (groin), midfielder Matt McKay (ankle) and striker Adam Taggart (ankle) won’t feature in the Belgian and Saudi Arabian friendlies.

Strengthening the national player pool is Ange Postecoglou’s number one priority in the lead up to the Asian Cup in January.

He will have a maximum of six friendlies to play before the competition.

After the World Cup campaign against the world’s best teams, Postecoglou says there won’t be any fear taking on Asia’s best.

“If we were prepared to take it to countries like that in a World Cup arena under that sort of pressure, there’s no excuse for us to not do it moving forward.

“Whatever challenges we’ve got ahead of us, I don’t think any of it will be as daunting as what we’ve faced.

He hopes the World Cup has given the team a sense of camaraderie and confidence, something that has been lacking in previous squads.

Australia squad: Terry Antonis (Sydney FC), Joshua Brillante (ACF Fiorentina), Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls), Jason Davidson (West Bromwich Albion
F.C), Ben Halloran (Fortuna Dusseldorf), Chris Herd (Aston Villa FC), Mile Jedinak (Crystal Palace FC), Tomi Juric (Western Sydney Wanderers), Robbie Kruse (TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen), Mitchell Langerak (B.V. Borussia 09 Dortmund), Mathew Leckie (FC Ingolstadt 04), Massimo Luongo (Swindon Town FC), Mark Milligan Melbourne Victory FC), Tommy Oar (FC Utrecht), Mat Ryan (Club Brugge KV), Trent Sainsbury (P.E.C. Zwolle), Brad Smith (Swindon Town FC), Carl Valeri, (Melbourne Victory FC) Alex Wilkinson (Jeonbuk Hyundai FC), Bailey Wright (Preston North End FC).

Greek derby set for FFA Cup: Sydney Olympic vs Bentleigh Greens

Sydney Olympic and Bentleigh Greens will face each other in a blockbuster Derby thanks to the FFA Cup round of 16 draw.

A blockbuster Greek derby will have Greek Australian fans in raptures after the FFA released its round of 16 draw for the FFA Cup.

Bentleigh Greens will travel to Sydney to face Sydney Olympic in a huge match, but sadly means just one Greek team will progress to the next round.

Queensland grassroots side Olympic FC have one of the toughest fixtures of the lot, hosting A-League club Central Coast Mariners.

At least for one of the lowest ranking clubs of the Cup, South Springvale (Aris) have been given a kinder opponent and might have a bigger chance to progress when they play Queensland’s Palm Beach Sharks. They just need to get over the travel fatigue and different weather conditions.

One of the biggest matches for NSW will be Sydney United 58 Sydney FC fixture.

The local derby will see United, a three-time National Soccer League (NSL) grand-finalist, playing Graham Arnold’s newly minted A-League team in the round.

The only all A-League tie is Adelaide United against 2014 A-League champions Brisbane Roar.

Victorian second division side St Albans Saints hosts Perth Glory, while Melbourne Victory will head to Canberra to play Tuggeranong United.
