A Tweed Run in Greece? “On yer bike,” I thought. “No, it’s true,” my friend from Spetses insisted, trying to curb her own enthusiasm.

She was right. This most “elegant” bike ride, synonymous with the style and finesse of a bygone era, had its first incarnation six years ago in London and, having already swept Tokyo, New York and Toronto, is coming to Greece this weekend (November 1-2), more specifically on picturesque Spetses, the car-free island steeped in history at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf.

“We had been looking for ideas that bring fun and visitors to the island, while doing justice to the character of the hotel,” Poseidonion Grand Hotel manager Antonis Vordonis told Kathimerini. Celebrating its centenary this year, the iconic hotel is the organizer of the event. But why choose a Tweed Run, of all things?

“Because it is a bike ride like no other, different from the kind of cycling events we are used to. The participants dress up in their finest clothes, take it slowly and enjoy the ride, competing with each other for the best vintage outfit, relaxing with aromatic teas and basking in the beauty of the countryside with authentic picnics,” Vordonis said.

With tweed fabrics in the spotlight, vintage plus fours, suits, woolen jerseys, coats, cycling skirts and perhaps a sporty cycling cape for the ladies, along with accessories such as bow ties, scarves, cravats and tweed caps are all encouraged, as at the end of the ride the Best Dressed Man and Best Dressed Woman will be awarded.

Furthermore, the “vintage lovers” will have the chance to claim the “Best Vintage Bicycle” Award. Those who do not own a vintage bicycle can still jazz up their wheels and enter the “Best Decorated Bicycle” competition.

“People have been looking for bikes to transform in time for the Tweed Run. There’s been a flurry of activity on Spetses in the last few weeks,” added Vordonis. He must be right, as my friend, Marikaty, told me she had lent out two of her old bikes for the event. “I’ve also seen local men growing mustaches to blend in, too!” reported Vordonis, which Marikaty also confirmed. It appears that the island has gone Tweed mad!

Vordonis stressed that the Tweed Run helps to revive the values of yesteryear, such as respect for and enjoyment of nature, a refined taste in clothing, virtue and proper manners, and in doing so deals a blow – no matter how temporary – to the haste and sloppiness so prevalent today.

And after the FILPA antique car rally took place on Spetses in spring, it seems Vordonis has something of a theme taking form. Already springing “surprises” that tap niche markets and thematic tourism (and promising more), with the island filling with visitors on otherwise quiet weekends, the hotel is promoting its renovated image after undergoing a facelift a few years ago, and locals as well as visitors enjoy rare events that would have otherwise appeared too remote to take part in.

Participants in the Tweed Run are currently seen exceeding 70 or 80, “and could run up to 100,” Vordonis said. At least a couple of people are expected from Britain, being the link with the original event in London. “We really don’t know how many people we can expect as the publicity has really been taking off in recent days,” he explained.

Will he be joining in? “Oh, yes, I’ll get a bike sorted to take part, for sure!”

Josep Gombau’s side rallied to earn a hard-fought triumph on the road, leaving their opponents still searching for a first victory of 2014-15.

Adelaide United came from behind to beat Melbourne City 2-1 in a scrappy A-League encounter on Friday.

The hosts led through an early Patrick Kisnorbo goal, before conceding to Bruce Djite late in the first half.

David Villa, playing in what is likely to be his final match for City, nearly fashioned a goal out of nothing with an improbable, mesmerising dribble mid-way through the second half, but the Spanish star was unable to leave a parting gift for his temporary club.

Marcelo Carrusca’s late penalty then sealed the win for the away side, leaving John van ‘t Schip and his players still searching for their first victory of 2014-15.

Djite: “Fantastic team effort. When you go 1-0 down away it’s always very difficult, we knew that after we copped the goal early on. But we had the belief we could come back and we did that tonight. It’s early in the season but it just shows we’re showing some promise this season. We’ve got the ingredients, it’s just baking the cake. Let’s just wait and see.”

Paartalu: “A new team put together takes time to gel. We’re not putting in 90 minute shifts at the moment. It’s just not good enough. We got a little bit stretched, maybe switched off a few times in the second half. We’ve got to mark better and be smarter.”

Fullback Ben Garrucio, on as a substitute for the injured Jonatan Germano, followed Awer Mabil inside and Tarek Elrich found himself with acres of space down the right, swinging an inviting cross into the penalty area.

Djite met it virtually unmarked, powering a header past Andrew Redmayne and in off the underside of the crossbar.

Garrucio’s slip let in substitute Bruce Kamau and Redmayne was forced to bring the youngster down. Referee Chris Beath pointed to that spot and Carrusca stroked home the penalty with aplomb.

Kisnorbo was lucky not to be sent off for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity just past the hour mark, picking up only a booking despite bringing down Djite with the Adelaide centre-forward bearing down on goal and Robbie Wielaert struggling to get across and cover. That narrow escape still wasn’t enough for the home side to take anything out of the game.

He embarrassed himself with a botched rabona in the first half but Carrusca almost made amends with 20 minutes to go, sending an audacious lob from close to the half-way line narrowly wide of goal with Redmayne beaten. The Argentine playmaker made no mistake from the spot with 10 minutes to go.

Coach killer

Garrucio won’t be keen to watch back the video of Adelaide’s equaliser. The youngster, with eyes only for the dangerous Mabil, was dragged badly out of position, leaving Elrich with all the time in the world to pick out Djite. It was his failure to deal with Isaias’ pass to Kamau that led to Adelaide’s winner. City’s left-back woes continue.

Treatment table

City seemingly paid the price for rushing back Germano as a solution for Iain Ramsay’s failure to adapt to the position in the first three rounds of the campaign. If it was indeed a gamble, it backfired, the Argentine forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring issues inside the first 30 minutes.

Back to the drawing board

Whoever fills out the Adelaide United team sheet needs to have their pen licence checked. The formation was listed as 3-4-3, with Craig Goodwin at outside left and Sergio Cirio in a central attacking midfield role.

When the match started it was apparent the Reds were playing the same 4-3-3 they have used since Round 2, with Goodwin at left fullback and Cirio in his usual spot at outside left.

The press weren’t fooled and Van ‘t Schip was unlikely to have been either, so perhaps teams should dispense with the feeble attempt at mind games and back themselves to win without resorting to deception.

The Final Word

The Reds did it tough at AAMI Park, proving they can grind out a result as well as blow teams away and only adding further to their early championship credentials ahead of a big game at home to Sydney FC next weekend.

City haven’t been able to win with World Cup and Champions League winner Villa in their ranks. How will they get off the mark when the former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid man leaves for New York next week? Fellow strugglers Brisbane Roar are their next opponents, and the champions may well fancy their chances against their winless visitors.

Olympiakos Panathinaikos match wasn’t without its controversy.

The Reds will come up against Asteras Tripolis ahead of their Champions League rematch.

Olympiakos came out on top as the stronger team in the ‘derby of eternal enemies’, winning 1-0 against its arch-rival Panathinaikos. The win bumped the team up to second place, only three points behind leader PAOK.

Despite being considered one of the poorest derbies between the two teams thanks to nerves getting in the way, the game saw central defender Tasos Avlonitis score his first ever Super League goal just one minute after coming on as a substitute.

Of course the game between the long standing rivals couldn’t pass without some drama. A coffin bearing the emblem of Panathinaikos was brought to Skai television, owned by Panathinaikos president Yiannis Alafouzos. Candles were lit and thrown into the coffin, setting it alight, before the perpetrators made a run for it. Security came to the rescue, putting the fire out before any further damage was done.

Along with Olympiakos, PAOK was also victorious, securing its ranking as number one for another round with a 4-1 win against Veria thanks to Robert Mak, Dimitris Salpingidis, Ergus Kace and Stefanos Athanasiadis.

Perhaps a game at Veria’s home ground this Sunday against Panionios will boost the team’s confidence, after the northern Greek team dropped to third place on the ladder.

Sunday will also see Olympiakos come up against Asteras Tripolis in an away game, while PAOK is sure to be an intimidating match up for Ergotelis, who have dropped to the fifteenth spot.

The Greens will find themselves equally matched when the team comes up against sixth placed Atromitos. With only one point separating the two, the Athenians will need to focus their game plan on creating enough chances at the goal lines on Monday.

With three clubs on equal points at the top of the A-League ladder and two teams one game short, no team can really brag about their positions.

Changing that situation might take time, but round four is a good place to get the upper hand.

While all eyes would have been on the Friday night farewell blockbuster match for Melbourne City star recruit, David Villa, there is still a lot to stay tuned for.

Current ladder leader Melbourne Victory take on a rejuvenated Wellington Phoenix on Monday, after coming off a demoralising loss in the FFA Cup.

In a very entertaining match that saw six goals put through, Victory weren’t able to save their bacon and have temporarily lost their marquee recruit, Besart Berisha.

The former Brisbane Roar striker hobbled off the pitch with a groin injury on the 43rd minute, while Former Socceroo Archie Thompson was forced to withdraw before the match due to sickness.

Once the game fell into extra time, the woes continued for Victory, as two players were given their marching orders.

Defenders Daniel Georgievski and Adrian Leijer were booked, reducing the squad to nine men.

Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat admits the game has left the squad short.

“It hasn’t been a good night,” Muscat said.

“I can’t recall a night like that with injuries, red cards. Not too much went our way tonight, but we’ve got to pick up the pieces from that.”

Victory at least gave their fans a lot of be happy about, after the team took hold of the Melbourne Derby last week, forcing Melbourne City into submission finishing on 5-2. 40,000 fans packed Etihad stadium, showing the Melbourne rivalry is still very much alive.

Phoenix might be coming into this match buoyed by their 4-1 win over Newcastle Jets at home last week.

They’re on a two match winning streak and are hoping to keep the momentum going.

With the FFA Cup semi final to train for, Central Coast Mariners will be desperate to secure a win against Sydney FC.

The club had a rest last week thanks to Western Sydney Wanderers’ ACL finals match, but will have used the down time to hone their attack.

It will be the first time the mariners will meet a Sydney FC crafted by their former coach, Graham Arnold too, making for a slightly hostile environment.

In the two matches they’ve played since the season start, Central Coast have one loss and one win under their belt. The 2012/13 champions will be hoping to give their fans more consistency.

While Perth got their mid week win against Melbourne Victory, they failed to get the upper hand against Adelaide United on Sunday, leaving the away match 2-0.

They come up against slightly easier opponents this week, taking on Newcastle Jets on Saturday at NIB Stadium.

Last week the Jets were in New Zealand, and now they’re flying to Perth, a tough fixture to be put under.

They’ll be chasing their first win of the season, and might get the upper hand if Perth are a little worse for wear after their FFA Cup match.

The Western Sydney Wanderers are one match away from creating Australian football history, as they prepare for their Asian Champions League (ACL) last leg final on Sunday.

The Wanderers come into the match with the advantage, having beating Al-Hilal on Saturday in a tough 1-0 win

Wanderers coach Tony Popovic couldn’t contain his disappointment with the team’s performance.

“They played very well and we didn’t, and we won,” he said.

“The key for us is we can do a lot better in terms of possession. If we do that, we give ourselves an excellent chance of lifting the cup.”

Playing on Sunday (AEST) in Saudi Arabia, the Wanderers will have an uphill battle to climb.

At home, the Wanderers have had a disastrous start to the A-League season, but have shown they’re more than competent in the ACL.

They’ve played 13 matches all across Asia to get to this point, and are equally matched when it comes to the Saudi giants.

All the Wanderers need is a win or a draw to take the title, while Al Hilal will need to be two goals clear to steal the win.

Al Hilal’s coach Laurentiu Reghecampf is stubbornly confident and says his team can do it, especially surrounded by its fans.

The Wanderers haven’t been so lucky in bringing its own fans, as a strict and complex process for obtaining Saudi Arabia visas, along with the travel cost, has reduced the touring party leaving from Sydney to 13 men and one woman.

Coach Popovic will most likely use the same line up as he did in the first leg, making use of Tomi Juric’s heroics.

The striker gave Al Hilal all sorts of problems after he came off the bench in the match’s last 30 minutes and scored the team’s winning goal.

Popovic will have to work on his back four, after Al Hilal showed it could superseded the defence and get through on a number of occasions.

The away pressure will also be an unavoidable problem for the Wanderers, as they will play in front of a 65,000 strong crowd that includes the Saudi royal family.

But at least they’ll have some local support from rival Saudi football fans hoping to see Al Hilal fall. They put a call out to the Wanderers management, asking them to bring along some extra t-shirts for them to don at the match.

Alan Pardew has vowed to send his resurgent Newcastle United side out to attack Liverpool in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have put a poor start to the season behind them by winning their last three matches in all competitions. Their latest success came at the expense of Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City in a 2-0 Capital One Cup defeat at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Despite Pardew naming a much-changed side, including Rob Elliot, Rolando Aarons, Adam Armstrong and Ryan Taylor, who was making his first start since August 2012, Manchester City were stunned as goals from Aarons and Moussa Sissoko dumped the holders out.

Pardew is plotting a fourth win in a row this weekend.

“We have protected ourselves a little bit for Liverpool [by making changes against City]; we can now attack that,” he said. “We have real confidence and belief and that’s very important in football.”

Newcastle have moved up to 14th in the table after a home victory over Leicester City was followed up with a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. Pardew is backing his players to cause Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool side problems.

“I’ve had some good games against Liverpool since I’ve been manager here and we’ve more than held our own,” he said. “I’m pretty confident I know what Liverpool will do, I’m pretty confident I know what Brendan’s side is.

” I know him well enough to know how he’ll come and play but, for us, we can surprise them because one thing’s for sure, Brendan won’t know my team.

“I’m pretty confident of what it’s going to be and it’ll be an entertaining game. He’ll have [Raheem] Sterling on the pitch, he’ll have [Adam] Lallana on the pitch, he’ll have [Mario] Balotelli, [Jordan] Henderson, [Steven] Gerrard, [Philippe] Coutinho all on the pitch. So Brendan is pretty happy with that.”

Pardew will be without midfielder Cheick Tiote (calf), while striker Papiss Cisse (knee) is rated by Pardew as “touch and go”.

Rodgers believes Newcastle are starting to reap the rewards of keeping faith with Pardew and the Liverpool manager knows his side will be facing a team brimming with confidence on Saturday.

“It is great credit to the people at Newcastle,” he said. “I know Alan is a top-class manager. We know there are boards who change manager but Alan is very experienced, outstanding manager and he has got results.

“Where they are at now, on the back of three wins, they have a bit of momentum.”

Rodgers will be hoping Balotelli breaks his Barclays Premier League goal duck after coming off the bench to inspire a dramatic Capital One Cup fightback against Swansea City on Tuesday. The striker scored his second goal for the club four minutes from time and Dejan Lovren headed the winner deep in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 win.

Liverpool will be without Daniel Sturridge (calf), Jose Enrique (knee), Mamadou Sakho (thigh), Jon Flanagan (knee) and Suso (groin).

Το εισιτήριο για τους «16» του κυπέλλου Ελλάδας εξασφάλισε ο Παναθηναϊκός, μετά τη νίκη επί του Παναιτωλικού με 3-1, στο πλαίσιο της 2ης αγωνιστικής του 8ου ομίλου της διοργάνωσης.

Με 6 βαθμούς στο γκρουπ η ομάδα του Γιάννη Αναστασίου εξασφάλισε την πρόκριση για τη συνέχεια της διοργάνωσης, σε αντίθεση με τους Αγρινιώτες που μετά τη δεύτερη ήττα σε ισάριθμα παιχνίδια «αποχαιρέτησαν» πρόωρα τον θεσμό.

Το συγκρότημα του Μάκη Χάβου τελείωσε το ματς με 10 παίκτες, καθώς αποβλήθηκε ο Κούσας στο 78΄ με δύο κίτρινες κάρτες μέσα σε ένα λεπτό.

Οι «πράσινοι» προηγήθηκαν στο 49΄ με το σουτ του Κλωναρίδη από το ύψος της μικρής περιοχής και στο 58΄ ο Μπούι πέτυχε το 2-0 με δυνατό σουτ. Ματαιώθηκε ο αγώνας της Νίκης Βόλου απέναντι στη Ζάκυνθο, αφού σύμφωνα με όσα αναφέρει το φύλλο αγώνα οι διαιτητές δεν έλαβαν από τη διοίκηση της γηπεδούχου ομάδας τα χρήματα που τους αναλογούν πριν την έναρξη του αγώνα, έτσι αφού περίμεναν πρώτα μισή ώρα και δεν υπήρξε καμία εξέλιξη, ματαίωσαν τον αγώμα. Πλέον αναμένεται η Ζάκυνθος να κερδίσει «στα χαρτιά».

Greece coach Claudio Ranieri has dropped striker Georgios Samaras from the national team after a dismal start to European Championship qualifying.

Samaras, who plays for West Bromwich Albion, is one of Greeces best-known players following his six-year spell at Celtic and after helping the national team reach the second round at the World Cup in Brazil.

But the 29-year-old forward was left out of the provisional squad of 17 overseas-based players named on Thursday ahead of a home qualifier against the Faeroe Islands on Nov. 14 and a friendly match against Serbia four days later.

Under Ranieri, Greece has performed poorly in Euro 2016 qualifiers, losing at home to Romania and Northern Ireland and being held to a draw by Finland in Helsinki.
