Rodgers running out of answers and time as Liverpool slump on derby day

722432_heroa

The Reds were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford as the Northern Irishman dropped Simon Mignolet and tinkered with his formation.

Christmas is regarded as the season of goodwill but there is precious little currently on supply for Brendan Rodgers, with the Liverpool boss entrenched in his first major crisis at Anfield.

This was the start of a crucial period for the Northern Irishman but the Reds followed up their elimination from the Champions League with a 3-0 defeat in their bitter rivals’ own backyard.

The next two games could go a long way to deciding Rodgers’s fate at Anfield. Losses in the quarter-finals of the League Cup to Bournemouth in midweek and then to Arsenal on Sunday could spell the beginning of the end of the 41-year-old’s time on Merseyside – just six months after he came so close to ending Liverpool’s 24-year wait for a league title.

Against United, Rodgers made the bold decision to drop under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet for Brad Jones and start without a recognised striker, with Raheem Sterling handed the responsibility to lead Liverpool’s attack in a new look 3-4-3 formation.

It was one of those days when a manager would be totally judged on his team selection and, unfortunately for Rodgers, his failed to pay dividends.

The decision to drop Mignolet after a string of unconvincing displays did not come as a major surprise but to do it in such an important game was puzzling, especially given that Rodgers later admitted that he had been pondering such a move for several weeks.

Jones’s performance was patchy at best, with the No.2 arguably beaten too easily for the first and third goals. He certainly is not worthy of becoming Liverpool’s first choice, despite Rodgers admitting that he will be in the first team “indefinitely” following Mignolet’s recent struggles.

“I felt I had to change it because we have to find solutions throughout the squad to be better,” the manager said after the game.

“I said to Simon that it’s for an indefinite period. Brad’s a very capable keeper so he was always going to play in the Bournemouth game anyway.”

Further up the field, Sterling was Liverpool’s most dangerous player and, had it not been for the heroics of David de Gea, could have had a hat-trick. His missed chances undoubtedly contributed to Liverpool’s defeat but it would be unfair to focus the blame on the England international; Rodgers is struggling for answers at Anfield and does not appear to know his best team.

The starting XI picked itself last season but Rodgers has chopped and changed in recent weeks in a bid to arrest Liverpool’s slump and is yet to find a winning combination.

The Reds splashed out £110 million (€140m) in the summer following Luis Suarez’s move to Barcelona but none of the new signings have lived up to their price tags. It is debatable if Liverpool’s American owners will loosen the purse-strings again in January, though it is obvious that a striker is needed.

Had Suarez been in the team at Old Trafford, it could certainly be argued that the Reds could have beaten United given the chances they created and Rodgers’s problem lies in the fact that the Uruguayan was not adequately replaced in the summer. Shock summer acquisition Mario Balotelli is yet to score in the Premier League, with fellow new arrival Rickie Lambert netting just once, while Daniel Sturridge has been on the treatment table since August.

The statistics are damning for Rodgers: Liverpool’s defeat at Old Trafford was their seventh in 16 league matches and they languish in 10th in the table. Confidence appears to have drained out of a squad that exceeded expectations last season and fans appear to be losing patience with the man on the sidelines.

A trip to Old Trafford remains the biggest away day for Liverpool fans but the despondent way in which they left the stadium at the final whistle summed up the feelings currently engulfing the club. Rodgers was even forced to bat away suggestions of dressing-room unrest following the defeat, the knives having come out during a dismal run.

“In every dressing room there have always been been issues but it is not something I discuss outside of the dressing room,” noted Rodgers. “The players are honest but we are not getting results.

“We have to recapture the team ethos. With the emphasis of the team, it is clear to me that we are searching to find solutions.”

The minimum that was probably expected of Rodgers this season was another top-four finish to build on the success of last term but that already looks a tall order.

Rodgers insists that he has the backing of Liverpool’s owners, John W Henry and Fenway Sports Group, but they have shown that they do not stand on ceremony if they feel that the club need to move forward.

It cannot be forgotten that the current owners sacked club legend Kenny Dalglish and quickly dispensed of the services of current England manager Roy Hodgson after both failed to meet their standards.

Of course, the Anfield powerbrokers will hope that Rodgers can inspire an upturn in fortunes quickly, otherwise the improvement of last season will be a distant memory before the bells of ‘Big Ben’ ring in the New Year.

Rodgers looked like a man with the world on his shoulders as he patrolled the touchline for the whole 90 minutes at Old Trafford but, unless things improve quickly, he could find himself sidelined permanently.

EPL: Manchester Utd too strong for Liverpool 3-0

cq5dam_web_235_137

Manchester United secured a sixth consecutive Barclays Premier League victory by beating Liverpool 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney netted a ninth goal in his last eight appearances on home turf to give United a 12th minute lead, 25 seconds after Raheem Sterling had passed up a fine opportunity to put Liverpool ahead. Louis van Gaal’s men doubled their advantage after 40 minutes as Juan Mata stooped to score from Ashley Young’s cross at the far post.

Liverpool created the clearer openings over the course of the contest but a fine display from United goalkeeper David de Gea, saving three times from Sterling and Mario Balotelli, served to frustrate them before Robin Van Persie completed the scoring with less than 20 minutes left. The result comes after Liverpool exited the UEFA Champions League in midweek, while for United, it acts as a measure of revenge for the 3-0 beating Liverpool dished out in last season’s corresponding fixture.

Brad Jones played a first Barclays Premier League match in almost two years for Liverpool as Simon Mignolet was dropped to the bench, where Balotelli was named having overcome a groin injury.

The intrigue in the United line-up came at the other end of the pitch as James Wilson was selected to partner Van Persie up front, with Rooney playing a supporting role in an attacking line-up. Marouane Fellaini collected an early booking for fouling Adam Lallana but the England midfielder recovered to thread a deft through ball for Sterling to draw a first save of the match from De Gea in the 12th minute.

United surged back at Liverpool immediately to open the scoring. Antonio Valencia nutmegged Joe Allen and picked out Rooney, who was afforded room to steer home side-footed from 16 yards.

De Gea held a deflected drive from Steven Gerrard as Liverpool looked to regain their footing and Sterling gave the Spain goalkeeper a more taxing save when he skipped past Phil Jones in the 23rd minute.

The visitors were then forced into a defensive change, Glen Johnson hobbling off to be replaced by Kolo Toure, and they fell 2-0 behind five minutes before the interval. Young cut back to cross right-footed and Mata nodded home.

Balotelli came on for Lallana at the break and Jordan Henderson headed Sterling’s left-wing centre over as Liverpool sought a quick response. Sterling spurned his team’s clearest opportunity of the match, allowing De Gea to block after Jonny Evans’ backpass had sold his goalkeeper short.

Van Persie could have put the result beyond doubt after the hour when he sidefooted wide from Valencia’s excellent low delivery, and De Gea’s finest moment arrived midway through the second period as he touched Balotelli’s snapshot onto the crossbar with a stunning reaction save.

With 18 minutes remaining, Van Persie atoned for his earlier miss as Mata gave him a simple finish after Dejan Lovren’s misjudged clearance.

Balotelli was twice frustrated by De Gea from close range once more before Jones produced a save to compare with his opposite number’s collection in the 87th minute, as Van Persie smashed towards the roof of the net.

Challenging for a top-four place to return to European football’s top table next season looks an increasingly tall order for Liverpool, who lie ninth, 10 points behind United in third.

Manchester Utd v Liverpool: Van Gaal hints at Falcao return

untitled

Louis van Gaal will rely on his assistant Ryan Giggs to motivate his Manchester United team for Sunday’s Barclays Premier League match with Liverpool.

The Dutchman will get his first taste of this fixture at Old Trafford but revealed his assistant has left him and the other United newcomers in no doubt about the significance of this game. In more than 20 years as a United player, Giggs played an integral part in helping Sir Alex Ferguson to replace this weekend’s opponents at the top of English football.

“I have an assistant manager in Ryan Giggs and he presented an analysis of Liverpool and he did it in a marvellous way, so I’m very pleased,” Van Gaal said.

United are seven points and six places above Liverpool and will be seeking a sixth straight victory this season but United defender Jonny Evans has dismissed suggestions his team are firm favourites to prevail. Liverpool have failed to reach the heights of last season, including an emphatic 3-0 triumph at Old Trafford in March, but Evans still expects a stiff test.

“We are in a bit of form in terms of results and Liverpool are not but all form goes out of the window in these games and anything can happen,” Evans, who is fit again to play, told MUTV. “I haven’t seen many of their games this season, but I watched a bit of the one in the Champions League the other night against Basel.

“Obviously, they were under a wee bit of pressure to get a big result that they didn’t get in the end. Luis Suarez has gone and maybe they aren’t as strong, but they’ve still got some fantastic players who can still create magic on the pitch and that is something we will have to be careful of.”

Evans returned from a foot injury to feature in Monday night’s 2-1 success at Southampton and will hope to be a touch sharper this weekend following that first outing since September.

“I didn’t start the game but I came on after 15 minutes, so it was good to get a run-out and it was a tough game as well,” he said. “It was very fast-paced and I felt that in the first 10 minutes. It has been a frustrating time for me with injuries so it was nice to get back involved.”

United will be without Angel Di Maria, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind through injury, but Phil Jones and Rafael are available again and Van Gaal hinted that Radamel Falcao could return to action after being an unused substitute at St Mary’s Stadium.

Liverpool must bounce back from last weekend’s 0-0 stalemate at home to Sunderland and Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League exit following a 1-1 draw with Basel. Brendan Rodgers accepts facing United is always one of the most relished games of the season for Liverpool’s supporters.

“It’s a very important game – it always is,” the Liverpool manager declared. “It’s a massive game in the fixture list for this country.

“We got an outstanding performance and result last season and if we can replicate that we’ll be very happy.”

Liverpool remain without injured striker Daniel Sturridge but Rodgers reported that Adam Lallana is in good shape after a rib problem and Mario Balotelli could return from a groin strain.

“He’s been out for a while but in the last couple of days he’s looked good in training, so we’ll give him every chance to come into the squad,” Rodgers said of Balotelli.

Cruz Azul beat nine-man Western Wanderers at Club World Cup

RABAT: The Western Sydney Wanderers’ dream date with Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Club World Cup has fallen agonisingly short after they controversially bowed out to Mexican side Cruz Azul 3-1 in extra time.

With only two minutes to play at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the Wanderers were leading 1-0 and seemingly on their way to victory when the game was turned on its head by a penalty for a tackle by Shannon Cole on Marco Fabian. Mexican football icon Gerardo Torrado converted from the spot, sending the match to extra time.

The Wanderers were already down to 10 men by that stage, having had defender Matthew Spiranovic sent off with 17 minutes to play. IIn extra time, they went down to nine men when Nikolai Topor-Stanley was sent off for a second yellow card – although his first yellow card was a case of complete mistaken identity.

That original yellow card should have gone to Seyi Adeleke for a foul in the first half but it was given to Topor-Stanley, who was at least 20 metres from the incident. It was a shocking display of incompetence from Ivory Coast referee Noumandiez Doue.

Short on numbers, the Wanderers inevitably conceded twice in extra time. First through a goal-mouth scramble that allowed Argentinian Mariano Pavone to tap home, with another penalty to Torrado making sure there would be no last-gasp heroics for the Wanderers.

It is now the Mexicans who will take on Real Madrid this week, while the Wanderers will have to content themselves with a play-off for fifth place against against ES Setif, defeated 1-0 by Auckland City at the same venue earlier in the evening.

Instead of earning $2.4 million from their trip to Morocco – which they would have made for getting to the semi-final – the Wanderers walk away with half of that, with a small percentage of that being distributed among the players.

While the Wanderers were given virtually no chance by experts going into the match, the horrendous conditions turned the surface – which was already poor – into a something of a shallow pond. Rain had begun pouring steadily during the Auckland City-ES Setif match in the hours before and only grew stronger as the night wore on.

Attempts to pass the ball were thwarted by enormous puddles – almost small dams in some parts of the field – and it appeared at one point as though the match was at risk of being called off. Players repeatedly collided with each other at speed, creating a potentially dangerous situation. There was even talk of the game being postponed.

While the night will be remembered for its controversy, the honest trust is that the most basic of skills were impossible to execute. Dribbling in particular brought players undone, and after one botched clearance, which sliced off his boot, Spiranovic upturned his palms and looked to the heavens. But there would be no respite from above.

The Wanderers players were furious just before the main break when a Mark Bridge corner ended up making its way to Labinot Haliti, who appeared to score. However, with replays hardly confirming why, the referee to blew his whistle for a foul by Topor-Stanley.

Cruz Azul dodged a bullet was shortly after half-time when Nikita Rukavytsya was brought down inside the box, only for the referee to wave play on. At the other end, Topor-Stanley would be given wrongful yellow for Seyi Adeleke’s foul on Pavone.

Crucially, Spiranovic would save his side’s bacon shortly after when Ante Covic left his line but was left stranded, allowing Pavone a perfect chance to open the scoring. But the Socceroos defender’s desperate lunge kept the game scoreless as the hour mark ticked by.

That would give the Wanderers a chance to sneak a break. La Rocca’s splendid effort gave them exactly that.

Hearts were in mouths when Spiranovic was eventually sent off, reducing the Wanderers to 10 men for the match’s finale. From the resulting free-kick, Ante Covic made a spectacular save from a Christian Giménez free kick, tipping the ball onto the post.

BLUFFER’S GUIDE

The Wanderers’ incredible journey over their first two-and-a-half years reaches its peak with their outing in the FIFA Club World Cup. While they are struggling in the Hyundai A-League, they have shown in their short existence it doesn’t matter how they are performing they can put it together when it counts as we saw on the way too their stunning ACL triumph. The good news for coach Tony Popovic is he has a full squad to choose from, with no major injury concerns, the challenge now though is to pick the right starting XI.

Daniel Mullen and Antony Golec have rarely been sighted in the Hyundai A-League but were a big part of the ACL win and Popa might go with them in the full-back positions.

The other contentious selection decision will be who makes up the attacking three behind striker Tomi Juric. The likes of Labinot Haliti and Mark Bridge were the favourites during the ACL campaign but new-boys Nikita Rukavytsya, Romeo Castelen and Vitor Saba provide plenty of speed and flair also.

Like the Wanderers, Cruz Azul has been struggling domestically but have had a good couple of week’s preparation for this tournament, including a week-long training camp in Spain.

Mexican legend Gerardo Torrado is the veteran of the side and their leader but they have plenty of quality right throughout their squad. Pablo Barrera, Marco Fabian, Mariano Hugo Pavone, Christian Gimenez, Anibal Zurdo and Mauro Formica are just a few of the players the Wanderers have to contend with if they are to win this clash and progress through to a dream tie with European champions Real Madrid.

ROUTE TO GOAL

Scoring goals has been the Wanderers’ major issue in the Hyundai A-League, with just six goals from their nine games. While they have managed to create a host of chances in almost every match, they have lacked the composure and finesse to take them.

Striker Tomi Juric is key for their hopes, scoring in his last two Hyundai A-League appearances and he will need the speed and service from the likes of Nikita Rukavytsya and Romeo Castelen to make it  happen.

With the Wanderers likely to play counter-attack, the speed of Rukavytsya and Castelen on the break could be decisive.

Most of Cruz Azul’s threat comes from imports Pavone, Gimenez and ex-EPL midfielder Formica.

WHO’S BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT THIS WEEK?

The entire Wanderers playing group. A dispute over payments for participating in the tournament has overshadowed the build-up for Popovic’s troops. However, the issue was resolved on Thursday meaning the team should be back to its unified self again.

FORM LINES

The Wanderers haven’t won since lifting the ACL trophy in November (they defeated Al-Hilal 1-0 in the home first leg), and are without a victory in nine Hyundai A-League games this season including a last-up 2-0 loss to Adelaide United.

Cruz Azul haven’t fared much better, finishing 13th in the Apertura in Liga MX, with just five wins from 17 matches. Luis Fernando Tena’s side warmed up for the CWC with a 4-0 demolition of Spanish Segunda B side El Palo in a friendly last week.

Hugo Pavone, Aníbal Zurdo and Pablo Barrera were all on target for Cruz Azul.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Wanderers have both the oldest and youngest players at the tournament. Goal-keeper Ante Covic is the oldest at 39, while at the opposite end of the scale midfielder Alusine Fofanah is the youngest having only turned 17 in November. Fofanah is also the shortest player in Morocco at 1.65 metres (5’5) tall.

PREDICTION

Western Sydney Wanderers FC 1-2 Cruz Azul

Despite their domestic struggles and off-field distractions, something tells me the Wanderers can put it all aside and produce one hell of a performance on the biggest club stage. It just might not be enough though against the well-drilled, well-prepared and classy Mexicans.

EPL: Arsenal – Newcastle Utd 4-1

original

Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla both scored twice as Arsenal claimed a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United to return Arsenal to winning ways and give manager Arsene Wenger a boost. The Arsenal striker, Giroud, came out in defence of his manager after the 3-2 defeat by Stoke City last weekend.

After a 4-1 UEFA Champions League victory against Galatasaray in midweek Arsenal carried that momentum into Saturday’s Barclays Premier League match to record a resounding win.

Newcastle went into the match having lost just one of their last 10 in all competitions but rarely looked like extending that run at Emirates Stadium. Giroud opened the scoring in the 15th minute with a precise header, before Cazorla, celebrating his 30th birthday, doubled the advantage nine minutes after half-time.

Giroud got his second, and his sixth against Newcastle, four minutes later by turning home Hector Bellerin’s low cross, rendering Ayoze Perez’s 63rd-minute effort nothing more than a consolation. Cazorla added a fourth from the penalty spot with two minutes left as Arsenal moved to within two points of the top four.

Injuries and Calum Chambers’ suspension forced Wenger to deploy former Newcastle right-back Mathieu Debuchy in central defence. It was Debuchy’s centre-back partner, Per Mertesacker, who went close to opening the scoring in the eighth minute. His header from Cazorla’s corner cannoned off the crossbar with Jak Alnwick well beaten.

Alnwick, the third-choice goalkeeper, was making his first start for Newcastle having come on for the injured Rob Elliot in last weekend’s 2-1 win over Chelsea and, just seven minutes after Mertesacker’s chance, the 21-year-old was picking the ball out of the net. Giroud rose highest to meet Alexis Sanchez’s cross and power the ball home with a well-directed header.

Arsenal were denied a second by referee Lee Mason shortly afterwards. Danny Welbeck cut in from the left and cleverly lofted the ball over Alnwick, but Mason ruled that the striker had fouled Daryl Janmaat in the build-up.

Welbeck then volleyed wide from Sanchez’s chipped pass before appearing to handle the ball in the area at the other end. Newcastle’s claims for a penalty were dismissed, but the visitors could still have levelled in the 34th minute had it not been for a double save from Wojciech Szczesny to deny Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse.

Arsenal went into the break 2-0 up after Cazorla latched on to Sanchez’s pass to lift the ball over a sliding Fabricio Coloccini before firing past Alnwick at his right post.

Newcastle’s defence, depleted by the suspension of centre-half Steven Taylor, struggled to live with the creativity and speed of the Arsenal attack, which was rewarded again when Giroud flicked in Bellerin’s low ball across the face of goal.

Perez gave Newcastle hope by glancing in Jack Colback’s free-kick after 63 minutes for his fourth goal of the season. However, Arsenal were comfortable in seeing the match out, with the home fans serenading Wenger with supportive chants before Cazorla’s delicately chipped spot-kick after Dummett had felled Welbeck.
