Steven Gerrard leaving Liverpool: LIVE updates and tributes as skipper set to announce Anfield exit

Steven Gerrard

Gerard Houllier says he is not surprised by Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool for a fresh challenge.

Houllier handed Gerrard his Liverpool debut back in November 1998 before making him captain and says he wants to play outside the Premier League.

“I’m not surprised because I knew he wanted a new challenge and it’s come at an age where he’s got to look at this future after football,” said the former Reds boss.

“I think he wanted to do something different. He didn’t want to stay in the Premier League, I know that. I was not totally surprised by it. I know Stevie and he would not play against Liverpool.

Gerard Houllier arrives with former player Jan Molby for a memorial service to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster

“All I know he is that he is a kind-hearted, generous person. You need to know the man first, who does a lot of work for charity. He’s a great person, a great character. He’s had to overcome injuries.

“He was an outstanding player for Liverpool in terms of technique, speed and power. He combined the three.

“And you need to remember the leader he was for the club. Nobody will forget the Champions League Final in 2005.”

Houllier also paid tribute to Gerrard’s professionalism and work ethic.

Liverpool: Season in pictures

“He understood he had to live for his job and not use his job to live,” he told SkySports. “He devoted his time, energy, diet, everything for the job. That’s why he was successful and became world class because he made the sacrifices for that.

“He had talent, but he worked very hard on the back of that to be successful.”

Houllier believes Gerrard could return to Anfield one day as manager.

“Maybe it’s right that he has a break from Liverpool and maybe he gets through his different qualifications to be a manager, then I wouldn’t be surprised to one day see him become the boss at Anfield,” said the Frenchman.

“He’s always talked about the team. He’s someone who thinks team first and I would not be surprised if one day he becomes a successful manager.”

Frank Lampard scores the winner as Manchester City edge 3-2 thriller against Sunderland

Frank Lampard marked his extended stay at Manchester City with the winning goal as the Barclays Premier League champions completed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Sunderland to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea.

The former England midfielder celebrated the renewal of his stay at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the season by rescuing his Manchester City side just when they appeared to be on the verge of spurning a two-goal lead for the second time in consecutive league home matches. The second-half substitute guided a header from Gael Clichy’s pinpoint 73rd-minute cross into the bottom corner for what proved to be the goal that took the wind out of Sunderland‘s sails.

It capped a frantic period of five goals in the space of just over 16 minutes. Yaya Toure had clattered home a brilliant long-range strike to give City a 57th-minute lead and Stevan Jovetic slotted in an impudent flick, with Clichy the provider once more. But a pair of City old boys in the form of Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson – the latter from the penalty spot after Pablo Zabaleta had fouled Billy Jones – brought the score back to 2-2 as Burnley did on Sunday, before Lampard had the final say.

Southampton strengthened their grip on fourth place in the BPL with a 2-0 victory over Arsenal. Sadio Mane and Dusan Tadic both capitalised on mistakes from the visitors’ defence to give Southampton a seventh home win of the season.

Mane opened the scoring after 34 minutes with a sublime goal from a tight angle, the in-form 22-year-old lifting the ball over stranded Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny. And after Fraser Forster had kept his side in the match with three quality saves to deny Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez, Tadic profited as Arsenal failed to clear a cross inside their six-yard box, the Serb firing home from close range to seal the points shortly before the hour and take Southampton three points clear of Arsene Wenger’s charges.

West Ham United missed out on the chance to leapfrog the Gunners as West Bromwich Albion ended their own losing run by holding the hosts to a 1-1 draw. Under the watchful eye of Tony Pulis, who was appointed the visitors’ new head coach earlier in the day, Saido Berahino cancelled out Diafra Sakho’s opener before half-time.

His strike ended a sequence of three straight Barclays Premier League defeats for the West Midlands club while Sam Allardyce’s side failed to get back to winning ways after ending 2014 with back-to-back defeats by Chelsea and Arsenal. The Hammers remain sixth while West Brom stay a point clear of the drop zone in 17th.

Second-half goals from David Nugent and Jeffrey Schlupp ensured Leicester City came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Liverpool. The resurgent Reds looked to be heading for a third consecutive top-flight victory when two Steven Gerrard penalties put them in command at half-time. But Nigel Pearson’s strugglers were in no mood to feel sorry for themselves and two goals in as many minutes from Nugent and Schlupp salvaged a point at Anfield.

Leicester’s fightback came on the back of a victory at Hull City that ended their 13-match winless run and will give them great heart in their battle to avoid the drop, while a point for eighth-placed Liverpool ensured they have suffered only one defeat in 11 fixtures.

George Boyd’s dramatic late leveller earned Burnley a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United in a pulsating match at St James’ Park. Sean Dyche’s side had fought back from two goals down to take a 2-2 draw from champions Man City and once again displayed their fighting spirit on Tyneside as they hit back from a goal down on three occasions.

Stand-in manager John Carver saw his side lead at the break through goals from Steven Taylor and Jack Colback either side of a Paul Dummett own goal as Burnley, who had to make all three changes by half-time due to injuries, hit the woodwork on four occasions. However, the Clarets finally levelled through Danny Ings’ header. Moussa Sissoko thought he had won the match in the 78th minute, only for the visitors to silence the home fans when Boyd’s low drive proved too fierce for Jak Alnwick to keep out.

Ahmed Elmohamady and Nikica Jelavic were on target as Hull City sealed only their second league win in 13 attempts, to inflict a fourth successive Barclays Premier League defeat on Everton with a 2-0 success at the KC Stadium. The home side took the lead when Elmohamady nodded Hull ahead just after the half-hour, and the second was not too far behind, as former Everton striker Jelavic made the most of slack defending after an admirable display of craft from Abel Hernandez.

Wilfried Bony scored a stoppage-time equaliser as 10-man Swansea City earned a 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers. The Ivorian came off the bench to net the leveller at the end of a match in which Swansea rarely threatened. Leroy Fer had given QPR the lead with a thunderous strike in the 20th minute and matters worsened for the visitors when Wayne Routledge was sent off for his reaction to a Karl Henry challenge in the closing stages.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace saw their respective goalscoring woes continue with a 0-0 draw at Villa Park. Yannick Bolasie passed up the best chance of winning the contest, lashing an effort against the crossbar after breaking free of the home defence, while Villa’s, opportunities came and went the way of Alan Hutton, whose shot was smothered, and Christian Benteke, who blazed over midway through the second half.

Tottenham Hotspur destroy Chelsea 5-3

original

A Harry Kane-inspired Tottenham Hotspur left Chelsea tottering at the Barclays Premier League summit with a spectacular 5-3 win over their London rivals.

Champions Manchester City battled to a 3-2 victory over Sunderland earlier on New Year’s Day to move level on points with Jose Mourinho’s team, who initially found an assured response through Diego Costa’s 14th league goal of the season.

But it was another striker who illuminated the contest, with Kane brilliantly equalising after 30 minutes and winning a penalty that Andros Townsend converted moments after Danny Rose gave Tottenham a 45th-minute lead.

A 3-1 half-time advantage became 4-1 eight minutes into the second period when Kane excelled once more to chalk up a sixth goal in his past six games and 16th of the season overall.

Federico Fazio’s error allowed Eden Hazard to reduce the arrears, but Nacer Chadli’s strike put the game beyond the reach of the visitors, though John Terry did have the last say with a late close-range finish.

The result means Chelsea and Manchester City now boast identical records, with the same totals for goals scored and conceded, meaning that if this was replicated after 38 rounds of the season, there would be a play-off match to decide the destination of the BPL title.

Chelsea playmaker Oscar returned from illness, while Cesar Azpilicueta and Willian were also restored to the starting XI.

Nabil Bentaleb – one of three players recalled to the home line-up – fired an early long-range strike at Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but a hamstring injury forced fellow midfielder Ryan Mason off and checked Tottenham Hotspur’s enterprising start.

Courtois reacted smartly when Chadli hooked an overhead kick goalwards before Chelsea went ahead in the 18th minute.

Spurs retreated as Hazard glided past left-back Rose to shoot against the base of the post and Oscar steered the loose ball back towards goal, leaving Costa with a tap in.

Going behind unsettled Spurs and Oscar almost doubled his team’s advantage when he stabbed wide in the 25th minute.

As has so often been the case during their recent impressive run, Tottenham Hotspur looked to Kane for inspiration and he answered the call in style.

The England Under-21 forward dropped deep to receive possession and escaped the attentions of Oscar to drill a superb low strike into the bottom left corner.

And Maurcio Pochettino’s men surged into a two-goal lead as the first half ended in remarkable fashion.

Christian Eriksen expertly unpicked the Chelsea defence to find Chadli and Rose slammed home under pressure after the Belgian’s shot came back off the upright.

Kane was involved once more in stoppage time, stealing in front of Gary Cahill to draw a foul and leaving the England centre-back to watch international colleague Townsend thrash a low penalty beyond Courtois’ dive.

Ramires came on for compatriot Oscar at the break and Hazard blasted over from the edge of the area before Kane sublimely took centre stage once more.

Seizing possession with his back to goal, Kane spun past Nemanja Matic and slotted an effortless finish past the helpless Courtois.

Chelsea were handed a route back into the match when Hazard caught Fazio in possession, surged forward from halfway to exchange passes with Cesc Fabregas and smash into the net.

Spurs were indebted to goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for keeping out Azpilicueta’s rasping 75th-minute strike before Chelsea’s tormentors-in-chief appeared to settle the issue.

Kane and Chadli combined for the latter to cut in from the left and steer home another unerring finish, while Terry’s tap-in from Hazard’s cross failed to take the gloss off a memorable win for Tottenham Hotspur, who move into fifth place, two points behind fourth-placed Southampton and above rivals Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane: “It shows how good a team we are. To score five goals, and that’s one of the best defences in the world, shows that we’re really coming together. I’m delighted with that win. We’ve kept yup our run and hopefully we can take that into the games ahead.”

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: “I think we made some defensive mistakes, some individual defensive mistakes. It was not easy for my defenders to cope with Nacer Chadli and Harry Kane. It was also very difficult for Tottenham defenders to deal with an amazing Eden Hazard and good Diego Costa. You can speak about crucial moments of the game but I prefer to focus on the result. The players tried a lot but the fifth goal killed a bit our fantastic reaction.”

Steven Gerrard: Liverpool captain deserves status as Anfield great

Steven Gerrard

When Kenny Dalglish concluded his playing career in 1990, Liverpool’s fans were almost unanimous in their view that this was the greatest player they had seen, and were possibly ever likely to see, in the red shirt.

The most accurate measure of the sheer scale of Steven Gerrard’s contribution to Liverpool Football Club – which will come to a close when he leaves Anfield at the end of the season – is that he has made so many of those same fans think again.

It will be an argument conducted against two different backdrops, with Dalglish’s brilliance performed in a Liverpool side that conquered all domestically and in Europe, while Gerrard was often left almost alone to shoulder the heavy burden of teams struggling to make their mark.

What is beyond dispute is that the debate will contain golden memories of some of the greatest moments in Liverpool’s history.

Steven Gerrard

Liverpool won the Uefa Cup, League Cup and FA Cup in 2001

They will range from Dalglish winning three European Cups and his involvement in eight title triumphs as player and manager, on through the years to Gerrard inspiring the famous comeback from 3-0 down at half-time to win the Champions League on penalties against AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005, to his match-defining display with two goals before another triumph on penalties against West Ham United in the FA Cup final in Cardiff 12 months later.

Gerrard may not have won trophies on the scale of other Liverpool players, but he still played his part in great successes, so often at times when the club were in reduced circumstances compared to the glory years.

In the post-war years, Liverpool fans had the great Billy Liddell to warm them before the Bill Shankly era gave them greats such as Roger Hunt and Ian St John. The 70s and the next decade gave them the likes of Kevin Keegan, Dalglish, Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, Ian Rush and others.

For Liverpool fans, the years since the Merseyside-born midfielder made his debut on 29 November 1998 as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem in a Premier League game against Blackburn Rovers will be known as the era of Steven Gerrard.

In that time, he is the only player to score in a Uefa Cup final, when Liverpool beat Alaves in Dortmund in 2001, a League Cup final, when they won 2-0 against Manchester United in Cardiff in 2003, an FA Cup final and a Champions League decider. All were Liverpool triumphs – and all with decisive Gerrard contributions.

Even on the day when news of his impending departure emerged, and at a time when the onset of age and manager Brendan Rodgers’s understandable desire to occasionally leave him out pushes him to the margins, he still scored both Liverpool goals from the penalty spot in the 2-2 draw with Leicester City at his beloved Anfield.

Kenny Dalglish

Kenny Dalglish scored 172 goals in 515 appearances for Liverpool from 1977 to 1990

As he prepares to officially confirm his date of departure, his current goal tally is 180 goals and 695 appearances, collecting 11 trophies along the way. It has all been achieved while at times carrying sub-standard Liverpool teams almost single-handedly.

One of his greatest nights was when he scored the late thunderbolt against Olympiakos at Anfield in December 2004 that gave Rafael Benitez’s side the 3-1 victory required to take them out of the group stage en route to eventual, unlikely victory in Istanbul.

Gerrard has had great players around him such as Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez – all beneficiaries of his ability to fashion goals as well as score them – but often he has more or less carried the burden of inspiration and expectation alone.

Other Liverpool players may have secured more trophies than Gerrard but his greatness was often forged out of adversity, produced at the moments of greatest necessity. When Liverpool have had Gerrard, their fans have had hope – and so many times he delivered for them.

While no-one should ever doubt his genius for one second, Dalglish was nearly always surrounded by world-class quality in most areas of the pitch. This luxury has rarely been afforded to Gerrard.

Even in one of their darkest moments this season, when Liverpool made a desperately disappointing exit at the group stage after their return to the Champions League, the last faint hope of qualification only came in the final minutes against FC Basel after Gerrard produced a trademark brilliant free-kick, the sort he has scored on countless occasions.

Steven Gerrard

Gerrard’s unfortunate slip against Chelsea last May proved costly as Liverpool missed out on the league, the only major club honour he is missing.

Gerrard will also be held in special affection at Liverpool because of his loyalty, almost unswerving for his entire career despite temptations to join Chelsea in 2004 and 2005, which included a hastily withdrawn transfer request just weeks after Istanbul.

After asking to go, Gerrard realised hours later he simply could not leave and – despite interest from elsewhere over the years – has never been tempted again. Until now of course, as he has finally decided to call time on his Liverpool career, ahead of a likely move to the United States.

Barring developments from the realms of fantasy, Gerrard will now leave Anfield with the one space on his personal roll of honour permanently unfulfilled – namely a Premier League title.

And he must leave with the pain of constant reminders from opposition fans about his ill-fated slip against Chelsea last April that allowed Demba Ba to run clear and score in front of the Kop in a 2-0 defeat that took that elusive medal away from Gerrard when he almost had it in his grasp.

It will rank alongside his most bitter disappointments, but when Liverpool fans look back on his career it will barely register as a footnote because they know Gerrard has been at the heart of all the triumphs they have enjoyed during his career. No serious Liverpool fan will ever hold that moment against him.

Despite a disappointing follow-up to that thrilling campaign last season, Gerrard still has power to add to his trophy collection with Liverpool in the Capital One Cup semi-final against his old adversaries and admirers Chelsea, the FA Cup to come and of course the Europa League, not the competition he wished to be contesting but one he would still love to claim.

Whether Dalglish, Gerrard or others can be ranked as the greatest to represent the club is an argument Liverpool fans can, and probably will, have for years to come and will be able to relive great times while doing so.

Different players, different eras, different teams. The argument may never have a winner – does it actually need one? – but what elations they have all given to Liverpool fans.

It is simply an illustration of just how good Steven Gerrard has been, and the indelible mark he has made on Liverpool’s history, that he has truly earned his right to be in such stellar company and part of that conversation.

Adelaide United 1 – Wellington Phoenix 3

Tyler Boyd celebrates scoring against Adelaide with his Wellington teammates.

A Tyler Boyd brace helped Wellington Phoenix sign off 2014 with a bang, crushing Adelaide United 3-1 in Wednesday’s New Year’s Eve clash at Coopers Stadium.

With their third successive triumph, the Phoenix leapfrogged the undermanned and at times unintelligent Reds into the third spot on the A-League ladder.

Ken Cunningham’s 54th-minute goal was equalised by Sergio Cirio before Boyd helped Wellington recapture the lead shortly after a brief melee during which Adelaide lost their focus.

Boyd then applied the finishing touches to the visitors’ new year’s celebrations by slotting his second in the dying seconds as United threw the kitchen sink forward and tried in vain to equalise.

GOALS

0-1 (Cunningham 54′) A grand Bonevacia through ball landed in the pocket of Jeremy Brockie who, one-on-one with Paul Izzo, went to the turf and must have been close to earning a penalty. The ball rebounded out to Cunningham who took advantage of the untidy scrimmage and rolled it past Izzo to the left.

1-1 (Cirio 73′) Awer Mabil delved into his bag of tricks, zig-zagging his way into the box and cutting one nicely inside, laying it on a platter for Cirio, who tucked away the sitter to equalise.

1-2 (Boyd 77′) After a horrible Cam Watson turnover, Boyd pounced and made the home side pay. The young substitute closed in and with the inside of his left foot, finished with class, giving Izzo no chance. However replays suggested Boyd may have been somewhat fortunate with some hand contact involved.

1-3 Boyd (90+3′) In desperation, Izzo stormed forward for an Adelaide corner at the death. After a goal-mouth scramble, Wellington cleared and gained control. With minimal hindrance, the forward-charging Boyd converted comfortably from 10 yards one-on-one to make it 3-1 with only seconds remaining.

WHAT THEY SAID

“First of all I’d like to thank God almighty, but it feels great. Credit to the boys, they worked hard and I just came on at the end and did what I could.

“I think we just need to stay humble, keep working hard like we are, good things will come. If we carry on the way things are going I think it’s going to be our year.” Phoenix striker Tyler Boyd

“At home, last game of the year, we expected better, but we didn’t produce today and we paid the price.

“I think we just weren’t ourselves, we didn’t keep possession. We did create some chances that we didn’t take which has been the story of our season so far.” Adelaide striker Bruce Djite

KEY MOMENT

Pablo Sanchez’s shoulder charge on Manny Muscat kicked off an ugly fracas near the visitors’ bench in the 75th minute.

Reds coach Josep Gombau unnecessarily got involved, leaving his area and getting stuck into Phoenix captain Andrew Durante and Wellington’s coaching staff.

The home team lost its focus badly, while the Phoenix appeared to fashion a new resolve following the incident.

HIGHLIGHTS REEL

Teenaged goal-keeper Izzo, drafted into the starting XI with skipper Eugene Galekovic on Asian Cup national duties, had some nervous early moments with some shaky distribution.

But he redeemed himself nicely when, one-out with Ben Sigmund from a dangerous Vince Lia cross, he snared a powerful, aerial ‘contested mark’ one-out with Ben Sigmund, the likes of which an AFL centre half-forward would have proudly claimed.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

Cam Watson was put out of his misery when he was substituted out in the 82nd minute after a horror patch when he virtually gifted Boyd’s first goal with a bad turnover and almost served another one to Jeremy Brockie moments later with another mistake.

OPTA DAYA KEY STAT

Even without spearheads Nathan Burns and Roy Krishna, goals weren’t hard to come by for the visitors. The Phoenix got on the scoreboard for the ninth successive match – a new club record.

COACH KILLER

The coach killer was, in this instance, a captain crucifier. Craig Goodwin found space in the area on 41 minutes and from an acute angle fluffed an attempted squeeze through what was a non-existent gap.

Shortly afterwards Bruce Djite, Adelaide’s acting skipper in Eugene Galekovic’s absence, stamped his authority and appeared to give Goodwin some stern advice, seemingly telling the tall left winger that the ball should have been crossed to where Djite, Cirio and Mabil were lurking in better positions.

THE FINAL WORD

After a wobbly end to 2014, Adelaide will need to improve significantly when they kick off the new year against high-flying Perth Glory in a Monday night blockbuster.

After earning a grand away win, Phoenix face a sharp three-day turnaround before hosting Brisbane Roar on Sunday afternoon in another stern test of their top-three credentials.

Wanderers and Mariners in scoreless draw

Antony Golec and Nicholas Fitzgerald tangle at Pirtek Stadium.

Fading A-League heavyweights Western Sydney Wanderers and Central Coast Mariners have carried their goalscoring woes of 2014 into the new year with a 0-0 draw at Pirtek Stadium on Thursday.

The two lowest scoring teams in the competition, both averaging well under a goal a game, lived up – or should that be down – to their reputation.

Wanderers have scored just two goals in five home games and netted just six times in 11 matches.

The Mariners, who exploded for three goals in their final match of 2014, have scored 10 times in 13 fixtures, but haven’t won since the opening round of the season.

Each have gone 12 games since their last A-League win, which in the Wanderers case was last season.

Bottom of the table Wanderers are 12 points behind sixth-placed Melbourne City with a game in hand, while the eighth-placed Mariners trail the Victorian side by seven points, having played one more game.

Anyone suffering from a new year’s hangover wasn’t likely to be roused out of their lethargy, as both sides huffed and puffed but rarely looked capable of producing the guile needed to prise open the other’s defence.

Both sides created a number of chance, but lacked a clinical finisher.

The Wanderers had most of the on target opportunities of the first half until the last minute, when home goalkeeper Ante Covic produced a triple save.

He parried a long range effort and reacted quickly to block closer range efforts from Nick Fitzgerald and Josh Rose.

The Mariners wasted a series of free kicks within 30 metres of the Wanderers goal.

Nikita Rukavytsya was the Wanderers’ primary attacking threat in the first half.

In just the second minute, he was foiled by Mariners goalkeeper Liam Reddy and had another attempt on target later in the half, while Labinot Haliti headed a chance straight at the Central Coast gloveman.

Haliti put another header wide in the second half, in which Mariners fullback Josh Rose was a central figure at opposite ends in the first few minutes.
