After an at times bright showing at last year’s World Cup, albeit one that garnered no points and three losses, the build-up to the Asian Cup tournament has been marked by some confident words by hosts Australia.
That confidence, however, is contingent on the Socceroos having a positive result against Kuwait in the tournament’s first match that took place in Melbourne on Friday night.
Frank Lowy, in his last year as Football Federation Australia chairman, will have demanded coach Ange Postecoglou lead the national side to a least a semi-final berth in the three-week tournament that culminates with the final in Sydney on January 31. Should Postecoglou take the side to the final he could become a national hero. But failure will prompt questions about the FFA’s decision to award him a five-year contract a little over a year ago.
On paper at least, winning the tournament seems a tough proposition for a Socceroos squad reliant on star striker Tim Cahill for goals and with question marks lingering about its defensive prowess.
Australia is second-favourite with the bookmakers behind only Japan, but starts the tournament as only the 10th-highest Asian side in the official world rankings. Iran is also considered a chance to win, as is a young and rapidly improving South Korea.

The Socceroos have overcome a nervy start to lay down an impressive marker for their Asian Cup campaign, winning their opening match against Kuwait 4-1 in Melbourne.
Goals to Tim Cahill, Massimo Luongo, Mile Jedinak and James Troisi cancelled out Ali Hussein Fadhel’s early strike as a raucous crowd found full voice on a rainy night at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium.
Expectation circled the Socceroos before kick-off, with a good result seen as essential to get off to a positive start after a poor run of results since the 2014 World Cup.
But the opening of the match hardly went to plan for the Socceroos. Appearing more than a little nervous on such a big occasion, Kuwait took its opportunity to steal ahead from a smart set piece in the eighth minute.
As a number of Kuwaiti players peeled off to the back post, causing their Socceroos markers to follow them, Fadhel held his position at the front post and dived ahead of Cahill to nod home.
It was a cleverly created and smartly taken goal, and succeeded in rocking both the home crowd and players as the tempo dropped and Australia looked the weaker team.
In time, though, the Socceroos found their groove, making a number of confident surges into the penalty area and winning fouls in dangerous areas, only for the chances on goal to dissapate.
But if anybody was going to make the difference for Australia, it was going to be Cahill.
The veteran was the beneficiary of some outstanding work by Luongo in the 33rd minute, who skipped past a handful of defenders to get the byline and square up towards Cahill who was, of course, perfectly placed.
The finish was as unerring as expected, the New York man slamming home with his right boot to set off the trademark celebration and settle Australia’s nerves.
The Socceroos stayed on the front foot for the rest of the half, and were rewarded again just before the whistle when Luongo met Ivan Franjic’s expertly weighted cross in Cahill-esque fashion to take the lead in the 44th minute.
Any thoughts the break came at a bad time for Australia were quickly dispelled as the Socceroos started the second half as it finished the first, immediately going on the attack and closing in on a crucial third goal.
Mathew Leckie hit the bar, and a few other chances fizzled out, but when Robbie Kruse was clipped in the area in the 62nd minute and the referee awarded the penalty, Jedinak was unerring with the finish.
Kuwait came back into the game as Australia made changes from the bench, with keeper Mat Ryan called on to make one stunning save to keep the two goal buffer, but the hosts always looked likely to find another goal.
Recalled Nathan Burns hit the bar with a stunning header, Tomi Juric fired shots straight at the keeper but Troisi found a way through in the final moments, belting one inside the near post from a tight angle after Leckie’s tricky build up play in the 91st minute.
While it was far from a perfect Socceroos performance, Kuwait was left wanting at crucial times thanks to the home side’s power of will and pace on the counter, and next opponent Oman will have its hands full to stop the momentum.
All of Australia will be behind the Socceroos on Friday night when they kick off the AFC Asian Cup against Kuwait in Melbourne.
Nothing but a victory will suffice for coach Ange Postecoglou and his squad, who will be relishing the chance to win a huge tournament on their home soil over the next three weeks.
After some impressive performances (though not, ultimately, results) at last year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil, results in friendlies have failed to follow since, but it’s been all about regenerating his squad for this tournament and beyond for the Socceroos boss.
Now they have the opportunity to prove things are on the right track in a tricky Group A against Kuwait, Oman and Korea Republic.
First opponents Kuwait have endured a tumultuous build-up to the Asian Cup, following the sacking of Brazilian coach Jorvan Vieira following their somewhat disappointing performance at the recent Gulf Cup.
New boss – Tunisian Nabil Maaloul – has had just one month to prepare the squad and as such are expected to take a cautious mindset into this match and try and hit the Socceroos on the counter-attack.
With that in mind, Postecolgou is likely to select a particularly attacking side to try and combat what is likely to be compact and deep-lying Kuwait defence.
The Socceroos boss is likely to stick with his preferred 4-3-3 system although with a slight tweak, with two “number 10s” to be deployed in front of skipper Mile Jedinak as a screener at the base of midfield.
This is the area of the pitch is the one causing the most consternation for the boss, with a number of candidates to fill that role.
Veteran Mark Bresciano is favourite for one of those spots, with the other likely to go to either Tommy Oar, Massimo Luongo or James Troisi.
Mat Ryan is likely to get the nod in goal with Ivan Franjic, Alex Wilkinson, Matthew Spiranovic and Aziz Behich to make up the back four.
Australia’s greatest-ever goal-scorer Tim Cahill will lead the attack but Postecoglou has to decide on who his wingers will be.
It’s likely to be a more narrow attacking three, with Robbie Kruse and Mathew Leckie the leading candidates but in-form Hyundai A-League attacker Nathan Burns is pushing hard for a start in that trio.
It’s an exciting looking line-up and one that should have plenty of firepower to bring down Kuwait.
But the Socceroos would be foolish to underestimate the nation known as “The Blue”.
Kuwait, winners of the Asian Cup back in 1980, have a good record against Australia, losing just three of 10 previous internationals, while also winning on Australian soil in Canberra in 2009 with a goal from defender Mesaed Neda in an Asian Cup qualifier.
Goalkeeper and skipper Nawaf Al-Khaldi brings experience and quality from the back, while Yousef Nasser and Bader Almotawaa are other players to watch.
If Kuwait could snatch a point from the opening match they would be delighted, but only a victory will do for the Socceroos, who will hope a winning start will give them the confidence boost to go deep into the tournament.

On Wednesday PAOK suffered a 71-59 defeat at Limoges in France for the Eurocup.
Olympiakos produced one more spectacular display in the top-16 of the Euroleague to trounce visiting Armani Milano 81-58 in Piraeus on Thursday.
The Reds made it two out of two in the second group stage of the competition, as they only faced a challenge by their visitor in the first half of the match at the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
The Italians led by five after the first period (18-13), but Olympiakos regained its composure and went ahead by four (39-35) at half-time and never looked back.
Scoring 10 unanswered points at the start of the third period Olympiakos advanced 49-35 and fended off Milano’s last challenge (51-44) with an impressive performance in defense that had the Italians frustrated.

Last year’s finalist PAOK and six other Super League clubs dropped out of the Greek Cup upon completion of the group stage of the competition on Thursday.
PAOK failed to score a single win in three group games and finished its group of four with just two points after its goalless draw at Kerkyra on Wednesday. Kerkyra and PAS Giannina have earned the ticket to the knock-out stages from this group.
Olympiakos topped its group with a 2-0 win at second-division Fostiras on Wednesday through a controversial penalty that Costas Fortounis converted, and a goal by Dimitris Diamantakos.
New Olympiakos coach Vitor Perreira attended the game from the stands, with caretaker Antonis Nikopolidis coaching the Reds on the night.
Holder Panathinaikos also topped its group, but gave up a 2-0 lead at Hania to draw 2-2 on Thursday with the local team from the second division and allow it to advance to the next round as the group runner-up.
Sotiris Ninis scored on his return to the Greens, with Viktor Klonaridis making it 2-0, before Stelios Kritikos and Costas Pangalos scored for Hania. That game marked the first time Panathinaikos has produced an all-Greek starting XI in 23 years.
Veria and Apollon Smyrnis drew 1-1, a result that had them both qualify. Their match on Wednesday will be remembered not for any of the two goals but for the effort of Veria’s Charalambos Pavlidis (pictured left): He shot on goal, past the Apollon keeper, only to rush to the goal line challenged by a defender, and apparently prevent the goal using his hand to push the ball out. He got a yellow card for his pains, the goal did not count, and when asked after the game about it he claimed it was his opponent who had handled the ball.
AEK showed it is finally ready to return to the Super League, as its emphatic 3-0 win over Europa League qualifier Atromitos showed on Thursday. The result meant Atromitos is one of the seven Super League clubs out of the Cup. The other six are PAOK, Kalloni Lesvou, Panetolikos, Ergotelis, Platanias Hanion and Niki Volou. The Volos club actually withdrew from the competition, following its withdrawal from the Super League.

The shock resignations of Newcastle Jets CEO Robbie Middleby and chairman Ray Baartz were designed to force embattled owner Nathan Tinkler or FFA to take action at the directionless Jets, a source close to the club revealed.
The source confirmed that both quit on Thursday in frustration at being unable to make day-to-day decisions at Newcastle, from lining up potential signings, extending player contracts or assessing whether or not to persist with coach Phil Stubbins as the side languishes second bottom of the A-League.
The duo’s unilateral action comes at a time when Tinkler – who failed to sell the Jets to Scottish Premier League outfit Dundee United last month for $5 million – is understood to be seriously contemplating handing back his A-League licence, possibly as early as the end of January.
He may not even have to wait that long with A-League chief Damian de Bohun and the FFA’s chief operating officer John Kelly expected to visit Jets headquarters on Monday to determine the club’s on-going viability.
The prospect of stripping Tinkler of his licence is looming large as the governing body ponders whether or not to seize control.
In a statement released to Fairfax Media FFA CEO David Gallop said: “FFA regrets that Ray Baartz and Robbie Middleby have resigned. They are committed Newcastle football people and have given so much to the Jets.
“It’s very disruptive for a club to lose its chairman and CEO mid-season. Obviously this instability comes at a time when the club is already in a holding pattern.
“FFA wants to see the ownership situation resolved as soon as possible. The immediate steps will include sending senior FFA personnel to Newcastle next week to assess the club’s current operating position.”
Singapore-based one-time billionaire Tinkler, whose financial travails have been well documented, put the club up for sale in August.
He has lost $6 million in four years at the helm, in addition to the $5 million lump sum he paid for the licence.
He is not expected to remain owner after the end of this season, regardles of any action the FFA may take.
While neither Middleby nor Baartz were willing to elaborate further on their departures when contacted by The World Game, the source said: “What Robbie and Ray are trying to achieve is to bring things to a head, particularly in relation to the ownership of the club.
“Nathan Tinkler has really only been a de facto owner for 12 months now and the club is drifting and has no direction. They don’t feel things can continue under the present situation.
“Lack of funding has been a major problem and they simply couldn’t operate any more on any level. They are frustrated because they see so much potential in the club.
“They felt they had their hands tied in every facet of running the club.”
With Tinkler distancing himself from the Jets, his eyes and ears have been Troy Palmer, the Hunter Sports Group’s former CEO, who has remained in and around the club in an unofficial capacity while attempts have been made to offload it.
Despite the upheavls at the club it’s understood there has been no disruption to players’ wages and all payments are up to date.
Tinkler, who took the reins in 2010, attempted to hand back the Jets licence in 2012 but amid legal threats from FFA and after long discussions with chairman Frank Lowy, he decided to retract the threat.
Tinkler was ousted from his ownership of the Newcastle Knights by the NRL in June.
With 10,003 members, the Jets have a strong support base, with both Middleby and Baartz hoping that a new owner can be found quickly should FFA step in to assume temporary charge.
The source added: “There is no clarity on what Nathan Tinkler will do from one day to the next, so everybody is really in the dark.”
The club is currently in the midst of a mid-season review to be completed by 24 January when it resumes its A-League campaign after the AFC Asian Cup break. Middleby is to stay on until the end of this month.

Τον νέο προπονητή των «ερυθρόλευκων καλωσόρισε αρχικά ο στρατηγικός σύμβουλος της διοίκησης, Κριστιαν Καρεμπέ, ενώ στη συνέχεια τον λόγο πήρε ο πρόεδρος της ομάδας, Βαγγέλης Μαρινάκης, ενώ μεταξύ των καλεσμένων ήταν και ο Σωκράτης Κόκκαλης.
Ο 45χρονος τεχνικός τόνισε στις πρώτες δηλώσεις του ως προπονητής του Ολυμπιακού: «Θέλω να σας ζητήσω συγγνώμη, επειδή δεν μπορώ να μιλήσω τη γλώσσα σας, τα ελληνικά, τα οποία είναι μία δύσκολη γλώσσα. Ξέρω το μέγεθος της ομάδας που έχω έρθει. Γνωρίζω πολύ καλά τι αντιπροσωπεύει αυτός ο σύλλογος σε ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα. Γνωρίζω τη δυναμική των οπαδών και του γηπέδου μας. Ξέρω πολύ καλά τι περιμένετε από εμένα. Αυτό που θέλω είναι να συνεχίσω να κερδίζω τίτλους. Ξέρω ότι αυτό θέλει ο σύλλογος και αυτό θέλω να συνεχίσω να κάνω και εγώ. Ξέρω πάρα πολύ καλά ότι εδώ ένα αποτέλεσμα μετράει στην ομάδα και αυτό είναι η νίκη. Θα δίνουμε καθημερινά εξετάσεις και θέλω να περάσω όλα τα στοιχεία μου στην ομάδα του Ολυμπιακού. Θέλω να ευχαριστήσω με τον δικό μου τρόπο όσους έδειξαν εμπιστοσύνη στο πρόσωπό μου, τον πρόεδρο, τους συνεργάτες του και το τεχνικό επιτελείο που θα συνεργαστούμε. Το ευχαριστώ μου θα είναι με νίκες και με πρωταθλήματα. Θέλω να αφήσω το στίγμα μου. Μια ομάδα επιθετική, δυναμική που να ευχαριστιέται το ποδόσφαιρο. Ώρα για δουλειά».
Σε ερώτηση που του έγινε για το ποιο είναι το όνειρο του για τον Ολυμπιακό, ο Περέιρα απάντησε: «Τρεφόμαστε από τίτλους τόσο εγώ, όσο και η ομάδα. Θέλω να συνεχίσω να κερδίζω πρωταθλήματα. Επίσης, θα ήθελα να κάνουμε μία καλή πορεία στο Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ ή το Γιουρόπα Λιγκ».
Σχετικά με τη φιλοσοφία του και τι θέλει να προσθέσει στον Ολυμπιακό, ο Περέιρα δήλωσε: «Εγώ έχω δουλέψει σε μεγάλες ομάδες, είχαμε αντιπάλους δυνατούς με δυνατούς παίκτες που έπαιζαν καλά την αντεπίθεση. Αυτό που ήθελα να περάσω στις ομάδες μου είναι ποδόσφαιρο κατοχής, μεγάλη επιθετικότητα στην άμυνα, επιθετική άμυνα και γενικά να έχουμε εμείς την μπάλα, να μην μας κάνουν πολλές ευκαιρίες και να βάζουμε πολλά γκολ. Αν το ψάξετε, αυτό έχω περάσει και αυτό θέλω να πετύχω και στον Ολυμπιακό, είτε εντός έδρας είτε εκτός έδρας. Να έχει μια ταυτότητα η ομάδα».
Για το αν η βραδιά που πήρε το πρωτάθλημα στην Πορτογαλία με τέρμα στις καθυστερήσεις είναι η σημαντικότερη στην καριέρα του και αν επιθυμεί να ζήσει ανάλογες στιγμές στους Πειραιώτες είπε: «Είμαι ένας άνθρωπος που ζω από το ποδόσφαιρο. Είναι σαν τον αέρα που χρειάζεται για να ζήσουμε. Ζω με πολύ πάθος και ουσιαστικά αυτό που θέλω να κάνω είναι να αφήσω το στίγμα μου και να λένε όλοι ότι πέρασε ο κ. Περέιρα και έκανε αυτή τη δουλειά. Είμαι ένας άνθρωπος που ζω με πάθος και αυτό με κάνει να θέλω πρωταθλήματα. Ήταν ένα πρωτάθλημα που δύο ομάδες δεν είχαν κάνει καμία ήττα. Η Μπενφίκα έκανε την πρώτη ήττα της μία αγωνιστική πριν το μεταξύ μας ντέρμπι. Θέλω να περάσω στον κόσμο και τους παίκτες τη σοβαρότητα που πρέπει να έχουμε από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος του κάθε αγώνα, ώστε να μπορούμε να παίρνουμε αυτό που θέλουμε. Δεν είναι καθόλου εύκολο, αλλά ξέρω τι σημαίνει που ήρθα στον Ολυμπιακό. Καταλαβαίνω ότι εδώ υπάρχουν δύο αποτελέσματα, η νίκη και η νίκη, δεν χωράει καν η ισοπαλία. Στην Πόρτο σε μία σεζόν δεν είχα ούτε μία ήττα. Θέλω να είμαστε συγκεντρωμένοι για να μπορούμε να παίρνουμε αυτό που θέλουμε».
Σχετικά με το πόσο χρόνο θα χρειαστεί για να περάσει τη φιλοσοφία του στην ομάδα, ο Περέιρα είπε: «Ξέρω ότι δεν είναι η καλύτερη περίοδος για να έρθει ένας προπονητής, αφού όλοι θέλουν να έρθουν στην αρχή της περιόδου και να περάσουν τη φιλοσοφία τους. Παρ’ όλα αυτά, με την πείρα που έχω εγώ και το επιτελείο μου, με ποιοτική και πολλή δουλειά θα μπορέσουμε να περάσουμε την ταυτότητα και την ποιότητα που θέλουμε κάποια στιγμή. Δεν ξέρω αν είναι σε δύο ή σε 1,5 μήνα. Δεν έχω ραβδάκι για να περάσω όλα αυτά που θέλω στην ομάδα. Δεν ξεχνάω πως είμαι σε μια ομάδα που δεν έχω άπλετο χρόνο ώστε κάνοντας μια προετοιμασία να χάσω και ένα αγώνα. Ξέρω πολύ καλά ότι πρέπει κάθε παιχνίδι να το κερδίζουμε».

Τον νέο προπονητή των «ερυθρόλευκων» καλωσόρισε αρχικά ο στρατηγικός σύμβουλος της διοίκησης, Κριστιάν Καρεμπέ, ενώ στη συνέχεια τον λόγο πήρε ο πρόεδρος της ομάδας, Βαγγέλης Μαρινάκης, ο οποίος δήλωσε σχετικά: «Για μας ήταν μια συνειδητή απόφαση η αλλαγή προπονητή, δεν έγινε μέσα σε μια μέρα, ήταν κάτι που το λάβαμε πολύ σοβαρά υπόψη μας και αποφασίσαμε σε αυτή την χρονική στιγμή να γίνει αυτή η αλλαγή. Αυτό που μας ενδιαφέρει είναι να δούμε τον Ολυμπιακό πρωταθλητή στο τέλος της περιόδου. Όταν μια ομάδα όπως ο Ολυμπιακός έχει ένα τόσο υψηλό προϋπολογισμό, ειδικά σε σχέση με τις άλλες ομάδες, δεν πρέπει ούτε να φοβόμαστε, ούτε να προσπαθούμε για ένα καλό αποτέλεσμα και να έρχεται με δυσκολία ή να μην έρχεται καθόλου. Θεωρώ λοιπόν ότι ήταν ανάγκη να γίνει μια αλλαγή γιατί ο δεύτερος γύρος θα είναι πιο δύσκολος από τον πρώτο. Αυτή η ομάδα πρέπει να πάρει το πρωτάθλημα πάση θυσία. Η επιλογή του νέου προπονητή έγινε με συγκεκριμένα κριτήρια. Αναλαμβάνει τον Ολυμπιακό σε μια κρίσιμη περίοδο. Έχει ζήσει παρόμοιες καταστάσεις. Στην χώρα του, ήταν προπονητής στην Πόρτο και είχε μάθει να κερδίζει. Ξέρει τι σημαίνει πίεση και τι σημαίνει να κερδίζεις. Στο ρόστερ της Πόρτο είχε πολλούς μεγάλους παίκτες, τους οποίους διαχειρίστηκε άριστα. Ήταν ένα βασικό κριτήριο για να έρθει. Επίσης, ξέρει υπό πίεση να παίρνει τις καλύτερες δυνατές αποφάσεις. Όλες αυτές οι προϋποθέσεις καλύπτονται από τον Βίτορ Περέιρα. Ο Ολυμπιακός σε λίγο καιρό θα είναι πρώτος και στο τέλος της σεζόν θα είναι πρωταθλητής».
Σε ερώτηση που του έγινε σχετικά με την πρόσληψη του Περέιρα, ο «ισχυρός άνδρας» των πρωταθλητών Ελλάδας δήλωσε: «Όταν πραγματοποιείς μία πρόσληψη ενός προπονητή, δεν είναι για έξι μήνες ή για έναν χρόνο. Είμαστε ο Ολυμπιακός και είμαστε υποχρεωμένοι να κερδίζουμε. Θέλουμε να βλέπουμε το καλύτερο δυνατό θέαμα. Ο Μίτσελ ήταν γνώστης του ποδοσφαίρου, αλλά αυτό δεν ήταν αρκετό, χρειαζόταν ένας που θα είναι γνώστης σε δύσκολες συνθήκες. Ο Περέιρα έχει εργαστεί σε τέτοιες, ένα ακόμη πιο ανταγωνιστικό πρωτάθλημα, όπως είναι της Πορτογαλίας, όλα αυτά είναι θετικά κριτήρια για να τον προσλάβουμε. Πριν δύο χρόνια, όταν αποφασίσαμε να κάνουμε μία αλλαγή προπονητή, κάποιοι δημοσιογράφοι έγραφαν και ασκούσαν την κριτική τους. Όταν έφυγε ο Μίτσελ, αρχίσατε τους ύμνους για τον Μίτσελ, λέγατε πάλι διάφορα, τώρα που έφυγε αρχίσατε να κλαίτε, μακάρι να γίνει το ίδιο και με τον κ. Περέιρα».
Αναφορικά με το αν ο Περέιρα έχει ζητήσει κάποια μεταγραφική ενίσχυση, ο πρόεδρος του Ολυμπιακού δήλωσε: «Δεν έχει κάνει ακόμη προπόνηση και δεν μπορεί να βγάλει συμπεράσματα απ’ όσα είδε με τον Φωστήρα. Μπορεί να δει τις λύσεις που έχει σε ένα επίσημο παιχνίδι και θα δούμε μετά. Ο Ολυμπιακός χρειάζεται να κάνει μετεγγραφή για να κερδίσει τον Πλατανιά, τον Λεβαδειακό, τον Πανιώνιο που έχουν παιδιά των 750 ευρώ; Χρειάζεται να κάνει μετεγγραφές για να κερδίσει τον σημερινό ΠΑΟΚ; Που είδαμε πως έχει κερδίσει τα τέσσερα τελευταία ματς και πως βρίσκεται εκεί που βρίσκεται σήμερα. Τα έχετε σκεφτεί όλα αυτά τα πράγματα; Έχουμε παίκτες που παίρνουν 1,5 εκ. ευρώ και 2 εκ. ευρώ. Για να απαντήσω στην ερώτησή σας. Ο προπονητής μας ζήτησε να δει πρώτα την ομάδα σε μερικές προπονήσεις και ένα επίσημο παιχνίδι και θα μας πει τι χρειάζεται. Σε κάθε περίπτωση Θα είμαστε εκεί για να στηρίξουμε το πλάνο του».
Ακόμη ο διοικητικός ηγέτης των «ερυθρόλευκων», απαντώντας σε ερώτηση για τον αν η πρόσληψη του Περέιρα είναι ένα βήμα για να «μοιάσει» ο Ολυμπιακός στην Πόρτο, δήλωσε: «Σήμερα η μέρα ανήκει στον προπονητή. Καλό είναι να ρωτάτε τον προπονητή. Είναι ένας άνθρωπος που έχει πολλά να σας πει. Καλύτερα να μιλήσετε μαζί του. Αυτά που είχα πει πριν από 4-5 χρόνια, νομίζω ότι τα περισσότερα έχουν γίνει. Ήθελα να δούμε έναν Ολυμπιακό αυτάρκη, να συνεχίζει να κερδίζει πρωταθλήματα και να προχωράει στην Ευρώπη. Έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί αρκετά από αυτά που περίμενα. Από σήμερα είναι μαζί μας ο κ. Περέιρα, ο οποίος έχει σημειώσει μεγάλες επιτυχίες με την Πόρτο στο παρελθόν. Η Πόρτο είναι μία ομάδα που πρωταγωνιστεί, κερδίζει, φτιάχνει παίκτες και αυτό το θεωρώ πολύ σημαντικό. Έχει πολύ καλούς σκάουτερ, αλλά αυτό δεν είναι αρκετό. Εκεί χρειάζεται ένας άνθρωπος σαν τον κ. Περέιρα, να τους διαχειριστεί και να δουλέψουν υπό πίεση. Είναι ο προπονητής που μπορεί να πραγματοποιήσει τα όνειρά μας».
Η Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης του Ντιέγκο Σιμεόνε, ήταν ξανά το «αφεντικό» στο παραδοσιακό ντέρμπι της ισπανικής πρωτεύουσας.
Οι Ροχιμπλάνκος νίκησαν 2-0 τη Ρεάλ στο «Βιθέντε Καλντερόν» και έχουν τον πρώτο λόγο για πρόκριση στους προημιτελικούς του κυπέλλου, εν όψει της ρεβάνς της 15ης Ιανουαρίου.
Ο Ραούλ Γκαρθία με πέναλτι στο 58΄ και ο Χιμένες στο 76΄ διαμόρφωσαν το τελικό σκορ. Όσο για τη Ρεάλ, που έκλεισε το 2014 με 22 διαδοχικές νίκες, γνώρισε τη δεύτερη ήττα της μέσα στο νέο χρόνο, καθώς προηγήθηκε το 2-1 από τη Βαλένθια την περασμένη Κυριακή.
Επίσης, η Βιγιαρεάλ επικράτησε με 1-0 της Ρεάλ Σοσιεδάδ χάρη σε τέρμα του Ρώσου Ντένις Τσερίσεφ στο 72′ και πήρε προβάδισμα για τη ρεβάνς.

Ange Postecoglou has insisted, during the post World Cup makeover of his squad, that he and his team should not be judged on the result of friendly matches in difficult environments but in the Asian Cup.
The coach knows he has been on a hiding to nothing playing a series of opponents – some very good, like Belgium, some decent, like Japan, and some who are always hard to beat on their own turf, like Qatar and the UAE – in away fixtures over the past few months.
But he has been unrepentant about the scorelines even though they have brought him the first criticism he has experienced following his appointment some 14 months ago after the sacking of Holger Osieck.
The Socceroos lost to the first three abovementioned nations and drew with the UAE. Their sole victory in five games since Brazil came in London, neutral territory for both, against Saudi Arabia, last September.
Postecoglou argues that it was far better to go on the road and test the mettle of his younger, inexperienced players and give them invaluable experience than fatten them up with less challenging opponents from South East Asia in friendly matches in Australia.
For Postecoglou the Asian Cup ends – which, at a minimum, should be a spot in the semi final – will justify the lead-up’s means.
Still, for all of the chopping and changing and experimenting with players and positions, the line up against Kuwait is likely to have a very familiar look.
Few of the youngsters who have been tried out in these friendlies are likely to start save for Aziz Behich, who was not in the World Cup squad but has burst into calculations because he is now playing regularly in the Turkish top division. The alternative left back Jason Davidson (who did play in the World Cup) has been frozen out at his English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion and is not match fit.
The coach is adamant that the lessons learned in this difficult lead-up will be borne out in spectacular style once Australia steps out in front of its own fans. He believes that a wave of emotion and popular support will lift the team and drive it through the tournament.
Its always dangerous to pin too much hope on emotion – as Brazil found out in its catastrophic World Cup semi-final loss to Germany – but on this occasion it’s hard not to agree with Postecoglou when he says that conditions, home support and familiarity with the environment will give his side a massive lift.
“I am looking forward to a bit of love. It’s my first home international in my city. It’s going to be special tomorrow night coaching in front of friends and family,” Postecoglou said on Thursday.
“I am looking forward to it and really looking forward to seeing how the players embrace tomorrow night and showing what they have learned over the past 12 months.”
It won’t, he said, be necessary to give the players any last words. The occasion will be inspiration enough.
“The overwhelming emotion they feel when they walked out to a packed stadium with Australian supporters and see the green and gold in the stands, whatever words I say will dissipate pretty quickly and the emotion will take them through,” he said.
“The last 12 months we have been on the road pretty much and put some pretty testing challenges in front of them. They are going to feel some love tomorrow night and I am hoping that takes them to greater heights.
“I can’t wait for the players to walk out tomorrow night. I have no doubt that a few of them will feel two or three feet taller, mind you some of them need it as they are on the small side. But I think it will take them to greater heights.
“Fourteen months ago when I was appointed there was a clear directive and mission that I was a part of. That was to regenerate the team and rejuvenate the way we play our football.
“We stuck to that, we understood that we would cop some pain along the way.
“What drives me is seeing out this mission. I know we will get there, I am absolutely bullish and confident about that. When people see the results and the rewards start coming in they will understand why we did what we needed to do.
Asked if the team would be nervous, as they were in the opening World Cup game against Chile when they conceded twice in the first 20 minutes, Postecoglou shrugged.
“I am sure they have learned from that. We paid a price, we copped two goals, but you also saw a reaction from a group of players who could have very well been shellshocked and copped half a dozen to push one of the world’s best teams right to the wire where we should have got something out of the game as far as I am concerned.
“I am not worried (about nerves). That’s why we have done what we have done so they can be ready for what happens tomorrow night and beyond.”
