Βarcelona crush Elche 6-0 away

Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique opened the scoring on his 200th La liga appearance

Neymar and Lionel Messi both scored twice as Barcelona beat Elche to keep pace with La Liga leaders Real Madrid.

Gerard Pique opened the scoring with the visitors’ only shot on target in a tight first half before Messi scored from the spot after the break.

Elche were reduced to 10 men when Faycal Fajr was sent off and Neymar scored a quick brace before Messi rifled in to complete his own double.

Pedro netted the sixth late on in a win that keeps Barca one point behind Real.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique made six changes to the side that beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Copa del Rey in midweek and benched Luis Suarez on his birthday, despite recently backing the £75m striker to rediscover his best goalscoring form.

Suarez, who netted 32 Premier League goals for Liverpool last season, has scored just five times in 17 games since his summer move to Spain and was replaced in the starting XI by Pedro on the right of an attacking triumvirate with Messi and Neymar.

Amid all the changes it was Elche who started quickly, with Jonathas and Fajr both going close to giving the hosts the lead at the Martinez Valero stadium before Barca defender Pique popped up at the far post to fire home from Xavi Hernandez’s free-kick.

Barca had put 12 past Fran Escriba’s side over three previous meetings this season and when Fajr was sent off moments after Messi had converted from the spot in the second half, following a foul on Neymar, this contest was all but over.

Brazilian Neymar twice latched on to through-balls from Messi to slot past goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton on 69 and 71 minutes and then his Argentine strike partner shimmied to wrong-foot a defender and add the fifth with two minutes left to play.

Neymar had the chance to secure a hat-trick late on but instead decided to square the ball for Pedro, who tapped home from a few yards out.

Barcelona have now won six consecutive games in all competitions and keep the pressure on their arch-rivals at the top the league.

Chelsea thrashed 4-2 at home by Bradford

_80498198_462075616

League One side Bradford City produced an amazing comeback from 2-0 down to beat Premier League leaders Chelsea in a thrilling FA Cup fourth-round tie.

Gary Cahill flicked Oscar’s left-wing corner in to put the Blues ahead, before Ramires doubled their lead after a one-two with team-mate Mohamed Salah.

Bradford’s Jon Stead pulled one back with a powerful 18-yard shot and Felipe Morais side-footed in an equaliser.

Andy Halliday blasted the Bantams ahead with Mark Yeates slotting in a fourth.

The game looked finished when Ramires made it 2-0 after 38 minutes, before Phil Parkinson’s side secured one of the most memorable victories in their history.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had said it “would be a disgrace” if they lost the game and, despite making nine changes to his starting line-up, still fielded a strong side.

They had won all 10 of their Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge this season and had been pushing for an unprecedented quadruple in English football – the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

However, their defeat added to an incredible fourth round of the FA Cup that has also seen Manchester United draw 0-0 at League Two side Cambridge United and Manchester City lose 2-0 at home to Championship club Middlesbrough.

But take nothing away from Parkinson’s team, who are ranked 49 places below their opponents. They showed great character and resilience to not only fight back from 2-0 down, but also to look good value for their lead.

Cheered on by 6,000 away fans who created a fantastic atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge, the Bantams chased for every ball, battled hard and also had the same number of shots on target as their opponents.

Stead’s stunning 41st-minute strike gave them a way back into the game, before Morais, who began his career at Chelsea, netted a second after James Meredith’s long throw-in.

With one eye on Tuesday’s League Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool on Tuesday, Mourinho had rotated his side but that decision backfired.

He brought on Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard as they tried to get back into the game, but Halliday blasted the visitors 3-2 ahead.

The Blues had chances to equalise but Didier Drogba headed over and Kurt Zouma also wasted a close-range opportunity.

Then, in the 90th minute, Yeates collected Stead’s back-heel to score Bradford’s fourth as they moved into the fifth round of the competition for the first time in 18 years and clinched their place in FA Cup folklore.

Manchester City beaten at home by Middlesbrough

_80497983_80497982

Manchester City were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship opponents for the second season running as they were shocked at home by Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough striker Patrick Bamford, on loan from Chelsea, bundled in the first after an error by Fernando.

Lee Tomlin hit a post for Boro, while Frank Lampard did the same for City.

But substitute Kike struck a second on the break for the visitors, who followed Wigan’s example of last season by knocking City out of the cup.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who returned from a five-day warm-weather training trip to Abu Dhabi on Friday evening, faded badly in the second half against a side who thoroughly deserved their victory.

Middlesbrough, with the Championship’s best defensive record, needed to be resolute in the face of intense first-half pressure, before creating a host of chances themselves in the second.

Tomlin had an early goal rightly ruled out for offside against Bamford in the build-up, but the visitors were thankful to goalkeeper Tomas Mejias – in for the rested Dimi Konstantopoulos – for six excellent first-half saves.

Mejias, who was part of Pellegrini’s squad at Real Madrid, denied Aleksandar Kolarov, Stevan Jovetic twice, James Milner and David Silva in the final 20 minutes of the first half.

Perhaps the best of those saves was a dive to his right to push aside Silva’s deflected shot nine minutes before half-time.

Boro got lucky in the midst of all those chances as Dedryck Boyota blasted over from six yards, and might have conceded a penalty when Daniel Ayala handled inside the area to halt Kolarov’s progress, but referee Phil Dowd gave nothing.

And the visitors rode that fortune to take the lead early in the second half as City’s defending went to pieces.

A Fernando back pass fell short, allowing Albert Adomah to tackle the ball beyond keeper Willy Caballero, and the Brazilian’s attempted clearance as it rolled towards the line rebounded in off Bamford.

Middlesbrough then passed up five excellent openings to extend that lead, the first two of which ended with Caballero recovering from his own dreadful clearance to stop Tomlin and Grant Leadbitter with a double save.

Adomah failed with an attempted lob over the goalkeeper after a terrific crossfield pass from the impressive Tomlin, who hit the post moments later following a beautiful drag-back turn, before Caballero palmed out a Jelle Vossen volley.

Lampard, on as a substitute, might have earned a replay with a deflected curling shot that struck the inside of the post.

That would have been harsh on Boro, who secured victory when Adomah broke away and combined with Bamford, feeding Kike to fire past Caballero.

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said: “Before they scored the first goal, we had five or six clear chances and they didn’t have one. But we conceded a very easy goal, and the game changed. They are a team who work well; that’s why they are second in the Championship. They had opportunities to score more goals and deserved to go through.

“I wanted to continue in all the competitions but now we must focus on the Premier League and Champions League. We now have a difficult game against Chelsea. We must reduce the five-point gap.”

Asked if he thought City’s trip to Abu Dhabi had tired them out, he replied: “No, I don’t think so. It’s easy to have an excuse, but I don’t think that was the case.”

Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka said: “I’m proud of the players, the crowd, the fans, the staff and the club. Manchester City had a lot of chances to score in the first half and I was concerned, because they have a lot of quality.

“They always have an attacking threat, and it was our third game in a week. We could have won by more because we were very well organised and have quality up front.

“At half-time I told my players – and maybe they thought I was crazy – ‘Manchester City are in our hands because the only chances they had in the first half came from our mistakes.’ We didn’t lose the ball like we did in the first half and that is why we had this chance.”

Are the Socceroos home and hosed? Not on your life!

Are the Socceroos home and hosed? Not on your life! There was a moment in the last 10 minutes of Australia’s quarter-final victory over China when I missed a few heartbeats, held my breath, and might have uttered “please, no…”

I think Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou might have seen it too. Tim Cahill, the man with more hashtags than any player in the tournament, chased down the Chinese back four as they were playing the ball out of defence.

Cahill attempted a tackle from behind the Chinese central defender, who stumbled but played the ball into his teammate’s feet and the moment was over.

But let’s imagine for a moment that Cahill’s challenge was mistimed, perhaps a little more robust. The defender goes down, the referee signals for a free kick and hand goes to pocket. Yellow card, and Cahill is out of the semi-final match.

At the World Cup last year, Cahill said in an interview that he plays “in the moment”. He doesn’t think of yellow cards or consequences for future games, he goes out and gives everything for the game he’s engaged in, for the team he is picked in, for the country that has been so damned lucky to have him as a representative.

On such small moments, the fortunes of nations can revolve. It’s why the overwhelming enthusiasm from Socceroos fans that greeted the quarter-final results in the Asian Cup needs to be tempered. Postecoglou knows this and has managed his squad masterfully to this point. Both Mile Jedinak and Cahill were withdrawn at 2-0 against China, a score famously proven to not be enough by Iran in 1997, but enough this time for the Socceroos to progress to an inevitable showdown against Japan.

But wait a minute… there is no Japan heading to Newcastle, and there will no doubt be those who believe that gives the Socceroos an easier passage to the final on January 31. Ange will be sticking it to the squad from here until Tuesday not to buy into that sort of complacency.

Indeed, United Arab Emirates are ranked 20 places above Australia in FIFA’s rankings (although you could put as much stock on that as winning a bingo sheet at the local RSL club). UAE have proven themselves resilient and legitimate contenders. They rode their luck against Japan for sure and were beaten on every stat sheet to come out of the game. But it wasn’t one-sided on the only stat sheet that counted.

It reminded me of an amazing World Cup qualifier more than 40 years ago when England played Poland at Wembley Stadium, needing a win to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals. Poland managed the most extraordinary escape, hanging on for a 1-1 draw on a night when England conspired to hit posts, defenders on the line, an inspired keeper named Jan Tomaszewski, (infamously referred to by Brian Clough in the post-match wrap as a “clown”) and fall on the sword of their own wayward finishing.

Nothing was expected of Poland as they took their place in the World Cup finals. The game was an aberration, a freakish riding of luck. Poland finished third in the World Cup.

UAE have the defensive capabilities to shut out the Socceroos, especially if the team comes to rely too much on Cahill. There will be a fine balancing act between attacking force and panic to tread if the game goes a long time without an Australian goal. And of course, there is Omar Abdulrahman to contend with, a player arguably just as dangerous to Australia as Cahill is to the UAE.

Perhaps one advantage not mentioned so much is that the Socceroos can now rely on almost total support in Newcastle. Japan’s fans threatened to take up half the stadium but UAE do not have the same level of support as Samurai Blue, and a jam-packed 24,000 wall of gold noise might just be worth some extra momentum if it becomes tight, as it no doubt will.

Even if the Socceroos do manage to get past UAE and secure a finals berth, they’ll face one of two teams who have managed to cause problems in the recent past.

South Korea of course are the only team so far to hold the Socceroos scoreless in the tournament. Iraq are largely a side that has grown together over the last four years, and a virtual youth side not even two years ago when a Josh Kennedy header was the only thing separating the two teams in that final World Cup qualifier. They are strong, attacking, skilful, and like the Socceroos, bely their FIFA ranking.

Having Japan and Iran heading for the airport departure lounge might look like a luxury but the Socceroos are not there yet.

Socceroos hit the water in Newcastle

r0_182_640_608_w370_h246_fmax

THE Socceroos have caused a splash on their first day in Newcastle, with the squad hitting the water at Nobby’s Beach.

An early morning training session at Wanderers Oval was cancelled and instead the Socceroos enjoyed a swim at the beach, as they relaxed ahead of Tuesday’s crunch Asian Cup semi-final against the United Arab Emirates.

Ange Postecoglou’s men timed their visit to perfection, with Newcastle’s beaches closed in recent weeks due to shark sightings and dangerous surf.

But the players were met with picturesque conditions, with the sun streaming down and thankfully not a shark in sight.

Striker Matthew Leckie said the squad was enjoying their time in Newcastle, a city the national team hasn’t visited since 1995.

‘It’s great for the city of Newcastle and we know the atmosphere will be fantastic at the match’.

Those thoughts were echoed by teammate Robbie Kruse, who said the squad would not be taking the UAE lightly, despite the Socceroos being heavily favoured.

‘People are saying we are already in the final but that’s definitely not the attitude we have. There are no easy games in international football and we will show UAE the respect they deserve, said Kruse.

‘It’s great to be in Newcastle. We’re looking forward to a bumper crowd of green and gold’.

Burns confirms Chinese interest but Asian Cup his focus

Socceroo Nathan Burns brings the ball under control against China.

Socceroo Nathan Burns has confirmed there is interest from Chinese clubs for his services, but the Wellington Phoenix striker won’t be rushing into making any decisions on his club future.

The 26-year-old, a second half substitute for the Socceroos in Thursday night’s 2-0 Asian Cup quarter final win over China in Brisbane, is catching the attention of cashed up Chinese Super League clubs after his standout season in the Hyundai A-League.

Shanghai Shenhua in particular have reportedly been interested in making Phoenix a large financial offer for the Socceroo.

After his ten-goal haul and his elevation to the national team, Burns says in-form players will always catch the eye of big clubs, but he’s in no hurry to talk turkey with other clubs.

“Yeah, there’s a bit of interest. But it’s a long way off and this tournament is my main focus,” he told reporters in Brisbane after the game on Thursday night.

“If you’re playing well, there’s always going to be interest.

“What happens after the tournament is obviously a while away yet, but it’s good to have interest but my main focus is football.”

For a player who’s plied his trade in the Greek and K-Leagues as well as Australia’s Hyundai A-League at Adelaide United, challenging himself is a key driver in his decision-making.

“I’m always open for new challenges. But what’s meant to be is meant to be. I don’t look too far into it because football can change overnight.

“I’ll sit back and see what happens.”

Burns and the Socceroos arrived in Newcastle late on Friday to prepare for their Asian Cup semi final with either Japan or UAE next Tuesday night.

After a starting XI appearance against Korea Republic and a scintillating sub role against Kuwait in the opening group game, Burns dreams he’s can help take Australia to the Holy Grail of an Asian Cup title.

“Hopefully I can play my part. There’s a big stage set up for some heroes and with the next generation of Socceroos coming through hopefully some stars can rise and make it their tournament.”
