Georgios Samaras has signed to Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal, leaving West Bromwich Albion after a poor season on the bench.

Samaras only made eight substitute appearances without scoring a goal for the English club and was one of a few players to be cut during the January transfer window.

The 29-year-old secured a deal with the AFC Champions League runners up for a whopping 14 million euros over the next three years.

Samaras is already training with the club, and is settling in well.

Al Hilal has 40 domestic titles to its name, as well as six Asian championships, and seven Arab championships.
Five Greeks sign in January transfer window

Along with Samaras’ signing, another five Greeks secured transfers during January.

Avraam Papadopoulos, Giannis Fetfatzidis, Tasos Donis, Panayotis Vlachodimos and Apostolos Vellios all made movements, all but one signing to European teams.

Avraam Papadopoulos was the only Greek to sign to a Chinese outfit, Shanghai Greenland FC, leaving club Trabzonspor. The Aris Thessaloniki and Olympiakos player is reportedly the first Greek to make the move to China.

Both Giannis Fetfatzidis and Tasos Donis joined Italian teams, Chievo Verona and Sassuolo Calcio respectively. Fetfatzidis had a great spell at Genoa but injury clouded his most recent stint.

Vellios joins Denmark outfit, Vestsjælland and Vlachodimos moves to France for Nimes Olympique.

Tim Cahill admits lucrative offers from the Middle East were on the table, but a desire to stay competitive for Socceroos pushed him.

Socceroo Tim Cahill has admitted he was considering “amazing offers” by Middle Eastern clubs before he settled on moving to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

He says he was pushed to move to the Chinese Super League for the desire to wear the Socceroos jersey again.

“I wouldn’t say I was close,” he said on a potential Middle East switch.

“There definitely were some amazing offers.

“You have to take in a lot of circumstances when you are ambassador for your country in football and you want to stay playing international football … when you have big influences in the game that you respect when you ask for advice.”

Cahill reportedly settled for a $9.6 million deal with the Chinese outfit after he was released by US team New York Red Bulls.

Cahill spoke very highly of the Middle East and repeated his support of holding the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I’m a massive fan of Qatar and Dubai,” he said.

“I travelled there every year when I was in the Premier League to get a rehab … or just to rest.

“I don’t know the politics behind it and the things that go on in the country.

“I’m going off personal experiences, the way we were treated as Australians when we played in Qatar.”

Western Sydney Wanderers scored their first win of the A-League season, beating Wellington Phoenix 2-0 on Sunday.

In front of 12,663 fans in sweltering conditions in Penrith, Nikita Rukavytsya broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, ending a six-year A-League goal drought.

The game was in the balance until stoppage time when Brendon Santalab doubled the lead after some nice lead-up from Nick Kalmar.

The Wanderers have remained winless in the domestic competition since their grand final loss to Brisbane Roar last season.

Rooted to the bottom of the ladder as the only team yet to post a victory this season, the precious three points provide the faintest glimmer of hope of making the top six, which still lies a massive 12 points away.

Playing the first ever A-League game in Penrith instead of their usual Parramatta fortress, the Wanderers were boosted by the return of Socceroos stars Tomi Juric and Matthew Spiranovic.

With temperatures soaring into the mid-30s in Sydney’s west, play was stopped midway through the first half for a drinks break.

The Phoenix emerged eyeing an equaliser with the tournament’s leading goal scorer, Nathan Burns, charging towards goal before being dispossessed.

Playmaker Michael McGlinchey picked up where he left off, showing his fine touch after regaining possession to force a save from keeper Ante Covic on the half-hour mark.

The Wanderers kept up the attack with a long-range Labinot Haliti strike just shaving the crossbar and a missile from Mark Bridge drawing a great save from gloveman Glen Moss just before half-time.

Ernie Merrick’s men returned from the break desperate to score and McGlinchey and Burns continued to threaten but just could not break through the Wanderers’ backline.

Roly Bonevacia had two last ditch attempts to level for the visitors but to no avail.

Santalab, who had come on for Juric in the 75th minute, got on the end of a Nick Kalmar ball to send the crowd into raptures with his injury-time goal.

Ισόπαλο χωρίς τέρματα (0-0) έληξε το ντέρμπι της 23ης αγωνιστικής της Σούπερ Λιγκ, ανάμεσα στον ΠΑΟΚ και τον Ολυμπιακό, στο γήπεδο της Τούμπας, με αποτέλεσμα ο Παναθηναϊκός να μείνει μόνος στην 2η θέση της βαθμολογίας.

Μέσα σε μια «καυτή» ατμόσφαιρα, το ματς ήταν από την αρχή ανοιχτό, με τον ΠΑΟΚ να έχει τη διάθεση να πιέσει και να φτάσει στο γκολ, αλλά να παρουσιάζει και πάλι τα προβλήματα συνοχής των προηγούμενων αγώνων, σε αντίθεση με τον Ολυμπιακό, που έδειξε να πατά καλύτερα στο γήπεδο.

Σαφώς πιο οργανωμένος, βρέθηκε περισσότερες φορές σε θέση βολής, όμως από τις ευκαιρίες που δημιούργησε οι περισσότερες σταμάτησαν πάνω στον εκπληκτικό Ιτάνζ, όπως το σουτ του Μήτρογλου στο 9′, αλλά και το σουτ του ίδιου παίκτη στο 23′, ο οποίος βρέθηκε εντελώς αφύλακτος και με “μέτωπο” το τέρμα, αλλά νικήθηκε από τον τερματοφύλακα του ΠΑΟΚ.

Σημαντική ήταν και η ευκαιρία στο 29′, όπου ο Ντοσεβί πέρασε τον Ιτάνζ, αλλά βρέθηκε σε πλάγια θέση, με αποτέλεσμα να “χάσει” την εστία και στην εξέλιξη της φάσης το σουτ του Μανιάτη έφυγε δίπλα από το δοκάρι.

Ουσιαστικά απειλητικός ο ΠΑΟΚ έγινε για πρώτη φορά στο 54′, όταν ο Μακ με σουτ ανάγκασε τον Ρομπέρτο σε δύσκολη απόκρουση. Στο 62′ έγινε μικρή διακοπή και προκλήθηκε ένταση, όταν ο Τσόρι πήγε να εκτελέσει ένα κόρνερ και δέχθηκε “βροχή” από αντικείμενα.

Και στη συνέχεια ο ρυθμός έπεσε, με αποτέλεσμα να λείψουν οι μεγάλες φάσεις, με τον ΠΑΟΚ να ανοίγεται για να επιτεθεί, αλλά να μην μπορεί να δημιουργήσει ευκαιρία και τον Ολυμπιακό να επιχειρεί κάποιες στιγμές να εκμεταλλευτεί αυτό το “άνοιγμα” του αντιπάλου του, όμως χωρίς ουσιαστικό αποτέλεσμα. Μοιραία το ματς οδηγήθηκε στο “στείρο” 0-0, που ρίχνει πλέον τον ΠΑΟΚ στην τρίτη θέση και τον δεύτερο Παναθηναϊκό να μειώνει τη διαφορά στους 6 βαθμούς από τον σταθερά πρωτοπόρο Ολυμπιακό.

Ενα καταπληκτικό βολέ του Ντάλεϊ Μπλιντ στο τρίτο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων έσωσε τη Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ από τη διαγραφόμενη ήττα στο «Απτον Παρκ» από τη Γουέστ Χαμ.

Το γκολ του Ολλανδού αμυντικού χάρισε στους «μπέμπηδες» το βαθμό της ισοπαλίας (1-1), στο ματς με το οποίο ολοκληρώθηκε η 25η αγωνιστική του αγγλικού πρωταθλήματος, αποτέλεσμα που τους φέρνει στην τέταρτη θέση της κατάταξης, ένα βαθμό πίσω από τη Σαουθάμπτον.

Τα «σφυριά» προηγήθηκαν στο 49΄ με τον Κουγιατέ και ουσιαστικά δεν απειλήθηκαν ως το τελευταίο τέταρτο του αγώνα, όταν η ομάδα του Λουίς Φαν Γκάαλ ανέβασε την απόδοσή της, δημιούργησε ευκαιρίες και τελικά έφτασε στην ισοφάριση.

Με γκολ του Πίτερ Κράουτς στην εκπνοή του αγώνα, η Στόουκ Σίτι κατάφερε να πάρει την ισοπαλία από τη Νιουκάστλ (1-1) στο «Σεντ Τζειμς Παρκ». Οι «ανθρακωρύχοι» είχαν προηγηθεί στο 75′ με τον Κόλμπακ, αλλά δεν κατάφεραν να κρατήσουν έως το τέλος το «τρίποντο».

Το μεγάλο ντέρμπι ανάμεσα στον ΠΑΟΚ και τον Ολυμπιακό, που θα διεξαχθεί την Κυριακή στην Τούμπα κλέβει, όπως είναι φυσικό, την παράσταση από το πρόγραμμα της 23ης αγωνιστικής της Super League.

Οι «ερυθρόλευκοι» έχουν αποσπαστεί ήδη οκτώ βαθμούς από τον «δικέφαλο» του Βορρά και ως εκ τούτου η ομάδα του Άγγελου Αναστασιάδη στο εν λόγω ματς… καίγεται για τη νίκη, προκειμένου να μειώσει την απόστασή της με την κορυφή και να μπει εκ νέου στη μάχη του τίτλου.

Η αυλαία της αγωνιστικής πάντως άνοιξε το Σάββατο με τον ΠΑΣ Γιάννινα να επικρατεί εκτός έδρας με 2-1 του Λεβαδειακού και τον Εργοτέλη να αναδεικνύεται νικητής με 3-2 σκορ του ΟΦΗ, στο μεγάλο κρητικό ντέρμπι. 

Όσον αφορά το ματς ανάμεσα στη Βέροια και τον Ατρόμητο, δεν ανέδειξε νικητή, καθώς οι δύο ομάδες αναδείχθηκαν ισόπαλες 1-1.

Από εκεί και πέρα, την Κυριακή, ο Παναθηναϊκός θα τεθεί αντιμέτωπος με τον Παναιτωλικό, ενώ ο Πανιώνιος και ο Πλατανιάς θα βρουν στο… διάβα τους την Κέρκυρα και τον Πανθρακικό, αντίστοιχα.

Η αυλαία της 23ης αγωνιστικής θα πέσει τη Δευτέρα με την αναμέτρηση ανάμεσα στην Καλλονή και την SKODA Ξάνθη.

Η Τότεναμ αναδείχθηκε νικήτρια στο ντέρμπι του Λονδίνου με την Άρσεναλ, της οποίας επικράτησε 2-1 με ανατροπή στο «Γουάιτ Χαρτ Λέιν» και την προσπέρασε στην κατάταξη φτάνοντας στην τρίτη θέση τη Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ, που παίζει την Κυριακή εκτός έδρας με τη Γουέστ Χαμ.

Οι «πετεινοί» του Μαουρίτσιο Ποκετίνο βρέθηκαν πίσω στο σκορ από το γκολ του Μεσούτ Οζίλ, αλλά οι «κανονιέρηδες» δεν κατόρθωσαν να κρατήσουν το αποτέλεσμα, αφού ο Χάρι Κέιν σκόραρε δύο φορές στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο και χάρισε μια πολύ σημαντική νίκη στην Τότεναμ, που έχει στόχο την έξοδο στο Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ.

Κατά δύο βαθμούς από τη δεύτερη Μάντσεστερ Σίτι (συνολικά επτά) αύξησε η Τσέλσι.

Την ώρα που οι «μπλε» του Ζοζέ Μουρίνιο περνούσαν νικηφόρα (2-1) από το «Βίλα Παρκ» απέναντι στην Άστον Βίλα, οι «πολίτες» του Μανουέλ Πελεγκρίνι ισοφάριζαν στις καθυστερήσεις τη Χαλ (1-1) στο «Έτιχαντ», με γκολ του Μίλνερ.

Εξαιρετική για άλλη μία αγωνιστική η Σαουθάμπτον, νίκησε στο τέλος του αγώνα την ΚΠΡ στο Λονδίνο και πέρασε στην τρίτη θέση της πρέμιερ λιγκ.

Στο ντέρμπι του Μέρσισαϊντ, με το οποίο ολοκληρώθηκε το πρόγραμμα, Εβερτον και Λίβερπουλ έμειναν στο 0-0, με τους «κόκκινους» να τα κάνουν όλα σωστά, όμως να δείχνουν για μια ακόμα φορά το πρόβλημα που έχουν στο σκοράρισμα.

Η Μπορούσια Ντόρτμουντ επέστρεψε στις νίκες και μάλιστα αρκετά εντυπωσιακά.

Η ομάδα του Γιούργκεν Κλοπ, με τον Σωκράτη Παπασταθόπουλο στον πάγκο απόψε, πέρασε με 3-0 από την έδρα της Φράιμπουργκ και πήρε «οξυγόνο» ενόψει της δύσκολης συνέχειας, καθώς χρειάζεται διάρκεια και συνέπεια για να αποφύγει τις περιπέτειες στις οποίες την έχει εμπλέξει το παρατεταμένο ντεφορμάρισμά της.

Με άνετες επιτυχίες προχώρησαν επίσης Μπάγερν και Βόλφσμπουργκ, που προπορεύονται στη βαθμολογία, ενώ πολύτιμο τρίποντο πήρε και η Χέρτα στην έδρα της Μάιντς, στην προσπάθεια των «πρωτευουσιάνων» για παραμονή στην κατηγορία.

Βαθμολογική «ανάσα» πήρε το Αμβούργο, που αύξησε σε 23 τους βαθμούς του επικρατώντας με 2-1 του Ανόβερου, στο πλαίσιο της 20ης αγωνιστικής της Μπουντεσλίγκα. Το αυτογκόλ του Μαρσέλο στο 26΄ έβαλε σε θέση ισχύος τους γηπεδούχους, που στο 51΄ διπλασίασαν τα τέρματά τους με σκόρερ τον Γιάνσεν.

Στο 66΄ ο Σόμπιεχ μείωσε για το Ανόβερο, που πάντως είχε την ευκαιρία να προηγηθεί στο 23ο λεπτό, με τον Ντρόμπνι να σταματά τον Χοσέλου σε εκτέλεση πέναλτι. Αυτή ήταν η δεύτερη συνεχόμενη νίκη του Αμβούργου μέσα σε τέσσερις ημέρες, καθώς είχε προηγηθεί το «διπλό» επί της Πάντερμπορν.

The visitors created more chances, and went closest to a breakthrough when Jordon Ibe, making only his second Barclays Premier League start, rattled a post with a drive from distance midway through the first half. Steven Gerrard, featuring in what is expected to be his final league derby, also went close on a couple of occasions but even the introduction of Daniel Sturridge early in the second half could not help Liverpool find a winner.

For Everton, it was a 10th consecutive Merseyside derby without victory in all competitions, dating back to their last success in October 2010, and a draw that leaves Roberto Martinez’s men 12th with two BPL wins in 12. Liverpool are five places better off having lost one of their past dozen top-flight matches.

Liverpool were first to threaten in the 10th minute when Joel Robles tipped away a Gerrard free-kick that was heading for the top corner. The visitors suffered a blow when Lucas Leiva had to be withdrawn on the quarter-hour with what looked an injury to his left thigh. He was replaced by Joe Allen.

Two minutes later, Raheem Sterling’s deflected shot rolled across the box and Robles had to rush smartly to deny Ibe from close range. Ibe, a youth academy graduate, went closer in the 27th minute when he raced forward into space and thumped an effort off the left-hand post with Robles beaten.

Kevin Mirallas sent a free-kick narrowly wide from 30 yards at the start of the second half, although Simon Mignolet looked to have it covered at his near post. Liverpool then hit back with Sterling twice shooting straight at Robles before an acrobatic Gerrard effort was headed over his own crossbar by Naismith.

With 55 minutes gone, Brendan Rodgers brought on Sturridge in place of Philippe Coutinho in a bid to break the deadlock. Everton responded with a change of their own as Aaron Lennon, signed on loan from Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day, replaced Mirallas.

With five minutes remaining there was one final chance for the hosts when Seamus Coleman broke through only to see his strike parried behind by Mignolet, as the game ended with honours even.

Harry Kane’s fine season continued in Saturday’s 174th north London derby as he struck twice after the break to earn his side a 2-1 win over Arsenal at White Hart Lane.

Arsenal, who were without their injured top goalscorer Alexis Sanchez, were on course for their first back-to-back victories at Spurs since the late 1980s after taking the lead in Arsene Wenger’s 700th Barclays Premier League match in charge. However, Kane, who was rewarded with a new contract at the beginning of the week, had other ideas as he turned the occasion on its head following Mesut Ozil’s opener to give Spurs a first derby win in five attempts.

Despite the hosts making the early running, Ozil opened the scoring 11 minutes in after an incisive break, with Spurs initially frustrated in their attempts to get back on level terms. The hosts’ pressure eventually told when Kane grabbed his first derby goal to level in the 56th minute, and the England Under-21 forward took his tally to 11 goals from his last 14 Spurs appearances with a superb header late on. This ended Arsenal’s five-match winning run in all competitions as their north London rivals leapfrogged them into the top four ahead of the afternoon’s other kick-offs.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side edged a cagey opening, with David Ospina forced to tip Kane’s early effort wide before the Colombian easily collected Danny Rose’s disappointing delivery from the left. However, in Arsenal’s first purposeful foray forward, the recalled Danny Welbeck burst past Rose to square for Olivier Giroud in the centre. The Frenchman helped the ball on to Ozil, who angled his body and volleyed past Hugo Lloris to score with a first-time shot for a third match running.

An increased intensity from both sides led to more chances before the half-hour, with Rose threatening Ospina’s goal twice more down the left. However, the Arsenal defence stood firm to soak up Spurs’ pressure, wasteful finishing from Christian Eriksen and Ryan Mason helping their opponents’ cause.

Welbeck was required to clear Eriksen’s dangerous free-kick late in the first half and Spurs started the brighter after the break. A lack of cutting edge in the final third continued to prove their downfall until Kane drew his side level with a cool finish at the back post after Ospina had failed to palm Erik Lamela’s corner out of danger. The goal was no more than Spurs’ pressure deserved but Welbeck almost put Arsenal back in front soon after, his curling effort kept out at full stretch by Lloris.

Ospina was called on again to deny Kane. having initially saved from Nabil Bentaleb, but the 21-year-old would not be denied as he further cemented his status as Spurs’ latest fan favourite. Kane’s 22nd goal in all competitions came courtesy of a wonderful arching header from Bentaleb’s cross as the striker impressed again in front of the watching England manager Roy Hodgson.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino: “It’s a special moment because always when you play the derbies it’s about more than just one game. It’s special for our supporters. I’m very happy and I congratulate my players for the performance. We played with our brain but also with the heart. We showed passion and emotion. [Kane] showed his quality and potential is massive. He can improve and this is the idea, to help him improve.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: “We defended quite well, but offensively what we produced was not our standard and not good enough. For me, they [Spurs] created more chances and overall we cannot argue too much that they won the game. The regret we have is that we gave the goals away, the first and the second. We had put so much effort in but of course when you put so much in and you lose the game it is difficult.”
