Madrid duo celebrate as Manchester pair slip

2282780_w2

Both Madrid teams and Sevilla made it a perfect start to the UEFA Champions League group stage for Spain but there were defeats for the two Manchester clubs on Tuesday.

Group A
Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Malmö
Ángel Di María got the first goal of this season’s group stage to open his European account for Paris before Edinson Cavani secured victory.

Real Madrid 4-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
Karim Benzema struck in the first half to go into the top ten all-time European Cup scorers and then after the break Cristiano Ronaldo converted two penalties before completing his hat-trick – the first man to reach 80 goals in this competition.

Group B
Wolfsburg 1-0 CSKA Moskva
Six years on from beating CSKA to open their only previous campaign in the group stage, Wolfsburg won again thanks to Julian Draxler on 40 minutes.

PSV Eindhoven 1-2 Manchester United
Memphis Depay put Manchester United ahead in the 41st minute on his return to PSV but Héctor Moreno equalised on the stroke of half-time and Luciano Narsingh clinched an impressive victory for the home side in the 57th minute.

Group C
Galatasaray 0-2 Atlético Madrid
Antoine Griezmann’s goals on 18 and 25 minutes were enough to ensure Atlético got their campaign off to a winning start.

Benfica 2-0 Astana
The first team from Kazakhstan to compete in the group stage, Astana made the longest journey ever in this competition only to fall to second-half strikes from Nicolás Gaitán and Kostas Mitroglou.

Group D
Manchester City 1-2 Juventus
Just like United, City led when Vincent Kompany forced Giorgio Chielleini to head into his own net in the 57th minute. But Paul Pogba set up Mario Mandžukić to level and with nine minutes to go Álvaro Morata produced a brilliant finish to decide matters.

Sevilla 3-0 Monchengladbach
The first club to enter this competition via the UEFA Europa League overcame the group debutants with three second-half goals. Kevin Gameiro scored one penalty, missed another and won a third for Éver Banega to convert. Yevhen Konoplyanka’s late cross snuck inside the post to ice the cake.

Champion’s League:PSV 2-1 Manchester United

untitled

PSV Eindhoven upset the odds by coming from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 in an entertaining UEFA Champions League Group B encounter in Eindhoven.

The visitors suffered an early blow when Luke Shaw was stretchered off after Héctor Moreno blocked his surge into the box. But they quickly regained their rhythm and almost inevitably it was Memphis Depay who opened the scoring, latching onto Daley Blind’s assist and bamboozling two defenders with a sublime touch before rifling the ball past Jeroen Zoet.

Depay and Chris Smalling also came close as the Red Devils looked to consolidate their advantage. But the next goal surprisingly fell at the other end when Moreno headed home Maxime Lestienne’s corner despite Blind’s best efforts.

Depay and Anthony Martial linked early in the second half but Zoet saved his former team-mate’s low drive. Yet as Louis van Gaal’s men threatened to take control it was the Eredivisie champions who once again struck. Andrés Guardado released Lestienne on the left and his magnificent cross was nodded in emphatically by Luciano Narsingh.

United upped the tempo and brought on Marouane Fellaini to add punch to their attack. But Phillip Cocu’s men defended well and ran out relatively comfortable winners. Van Gaal will certainly not have enjoyed his return to the Netherlands.

Man of the match: Héctor Moreno
Moreno was a rock at the back for PSV, stifling the danger from Anthony Martial and also using the ball intelligently whenever winning possession. His prowess in the air was what brought his side back into the game when it seemed to be slipping from their grasp. Signing the former AZ Alkmaar defender from Espanyol was a smart piece of summer business by Cocu.

How badly do PSV miss Depay?
The match was finely in the balance until the former PSV forward produced a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock. That kind of skill invariably makes the difference at this level. In saying that, his successor Lestienne was always menacing and his direct running caused Matteo Darmian problems all evening. A new Eindhoven star is born?

The Rooney factor
Much was expected of Martial after his sizzling substitute appearance against Liverpool on Saturday, but he didn’t manage to stamp his presence on this fixture. United missed the injured Wayne Rooney’s guile and clinical finishing – and ultimately failed to win a contest they controlled for long spells.

files

Kostas Katsouranis to Heidelberg United: FFA Cup quarter finalist sign Greek international

883791-64d9c4c8-5b6a-11e5-93af-6cea16a76282

VICTORIAN Premier League outfit Heidelberg United have pulled off a stunning FFA Cup coup, luring Greek international Kostas Katsouranis to the club for their quarter-final with Melbourne City.

Katsouranis, 36, wore his country’s armband at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and was part of the famous side that won Euro 2004 in Portugal.

An ecstatic Heidelberg head coach George Katsakis told foxsports.com.au that his players and everyone involved in the club are deliriously excited to have a Greek colossus, who has played 116 times for his country, join them on a short deal that should see him in the country for approximately two weeks.

“Everyone around the club is going crazy,” he said. “No one can believe it eventuated.”

“I’m obviously excited to have a player of that calibre represent our team and, more importantly for me, to play under my direction – it’s unbelievable, I’m very excited.”

He has been a part of the Greece national team for over a decade and has also made one appearance in their current Euro 2016 campaign. With veteran skipper Giorgos Karagounis on the bench in Brazil, Katsouranis took the armband, although he saw red in their group clash with Japan. In 2010, he was part of the first Greek XI to win a FIFA World Cup match, when they defeated Nigeria 2-1 in South Africa.

Heidelberg host Melbourne City in the FFA Cup quarter-final, Tuesday 29 September, 8pm EST, live and exclusive on Fox Sports.

He’s currently without a club, having finished a six-month stint at Atromitos in the Greek Super League at the end of last season; his club career has previously taken him to Panachaiki, AEK Athens, Benfica, Panathinaikos (ironically, Melbourne City recruit Bruno Fornaroli replaced him there in 2013), PAOK, and Indian Super League club Pune City.

Heidelberg, who have moved into the final eight via wins over Sydney United and Broadmeadow Magic, were founded by Greek immigrants in 1958 and that communal element had a big role in luring a player of such immense pedigree to the club.

“Being a highly Greek population set the scene for it,” Katsakis revealed.

“Knowing the community was right behind it, we thought of someone of that magnitude. It was very important for us to get it over the line.

“When you start to put things into perspective, he played for Benfica, all over the world, to come to the Olympic Village for Heidelberg – it’s amazing.”

He added: “We’ve been talking to him over the last couple of weeks; he’s just as excited (as we are).

“He wants to come down and make a mark in Australian football as a guest player.

“Being a servant of the Greek community, he’s excited to see the patriotism that we have in Australia. He wants to experience it. I’m hoping he’ll relate to the occasion and rise to it.”

Katsakis revealed that luring a big name was something they’d been plotting once Daniel Heffernan was picked up by Central Coast Mariners.

“We put it in the pipeline as soon as that eventuated. We thought me might be due an exemption to chase someone of pedigree.

“We’ve got some people here, one person in particular involved in international football, he’s got some contacts and got it over the line for us.”

The signing is another major fillip for the FFA Cup – not just because a team from below the top tier is now able to make such a signing, but that the player himself is using it as another opportunity to put himself in the shop window.

“From what I believe he’s been negotiating with a couple of clubs, nothing has eventuated,” Katsakis said. “So this might expose him and on the way back, who knows what opportunities might open for him.”

It’s cliché to throw the term magic of the cup out and about, but, Katsakis says his players are now walking that little bit taller ahead of a clash with A-League outfit City in a bid to reach the final four and cause a boilover.

“I think the confidence of the players at the moment is very high, by announcing what we have today, the boys will be astonished with what’s happened,” he said.

“It’s something you can’t believe and it doesn’t happen on a regular basis.

“They’ll rise to the occasion as well, and this will lift their confidence enormously. It’s definitely a difficult task to play against full time professionals, but it gives us that extra bit to make us competitive.”

He added: “Not only does (the FFA Cup) give us the opportunity to breed our own and get grassroots football to rise to the top; it gives the opportunity to the league to do things like this and put it on the map.

“Australian football is experiencing some difficulties for all the wrong reasons at the moment; something like this gives the game a different direction.”

Liberal leadership: Malcolm Turnbull defeats Tony Abbott to become PM

1442242114722

Malcolm Turnbull has been elected as the nation’s 29th Prime Minister, after launching an all-or-nothing leadership challenge on Monday afternoon in which he quit the front bench, declared Tony Abbott had failed as leader, and told colleagues that sticking with him would only make Bill Shorten the next prime minister of Australia.

The more moderate Mr Turnbull emerged victorious from a tense late-night meeting of the Liberal party room and has been reunited in the leadership team with the deputy with whom he served as opposition leader until 2009, Julie Bishop.

Despite inflated claims of support by both sides as they sought to create momentum, the outcome in the end was decisive, with Mr Turnbull winning 54 votes to 44.

An attempt by Abbott loyalist Kevin Andrews to knock off Ms Bishop as deputy was also spectacularly unsuccessful with Ms Bishop strongly re-endorsed 70 votes to 30.

At his first media conference after the ballot Mr Turnbull on Monday night said he was “very humbled by the great honour and responsibility that has been given to me today” and called for a fresh era of vision and consultative leadership.

“We need to have in this country and we will have now, an economic vision, a leadership that explains the great challenges and opportunities that we face,” Mr Turnbull said.

“This will be a thoroughly Liberal government. It will be a thoroughly Liberal government committed to freedom, the individual and the market.

“It’ll be focussed on ensuring that in the years ahead as the world becomes more and more competitive and greater opportunities arise, we are able to take advantage of that. The Australia of the future has to be a nation that is agile, that is innovative, that is creative.”

Mr Turnbull paid tribute to Mr Abbott, saying the nation owed him a great debt.

“I want to say at the outset what a great debt the nation owes and the party owes, the government owes to Tony Abbott and of course, to his family Margie and their daughters.

“The burden of leadership is a very heavy one. Tony has discharged that as leader of the party and, of course, as Prime Minister over many years now and the achievements of the government that he has led have been formidable.”

The result came at the end of an acrimonious day after Ms Bishop confronted Mr Abbott with the news he had lost the confidence of the majority of the party room and would face an imminent challenge from his communication minister, Mr Turnbull.

That came within hours after Mr Turnbull made his move following question time.

The leadership change-over, which came just days before a hard-fought byelection will be decided in the Perth seat of Canning, was designed to reconfigure the government ahead of a general election due within a year, but has left it riven with divisions.

Among a slew of casualties from the meltdown of the Abbott operation were some of the federal government’s most senior and prominent figures including Treasurer Joe Hockey, Senate leader Eric Abetz, and Defence Minister Kevin Andrews.

The end to Mr Abbott’s troubled 24-month stint as prime minister concluded a dramatic day in federal politics which saw the more popular Mr Turnbull resign as Communications Minister and launch a full frontal challenge for the top job.

The decision immediately sparked bitter recriminations and plunged the Coalition government into a full-blown crisis threatening by implication to prematurely end to the careers of several senior Liberals including Mr Abbott, Treasurer Joe Hockey, Senate leader Eric Abetz, Defence Minister Kevin Andrews, and others.

In response a defiant Mr Abbott attempted to wrong-foot his critics arranging a snap evening party room meeting in which he declared he would be a candidate and would survive.

He said he had been “heartened” by the support flooding in to Liberal MPs’ offices, as he called on colleagues not to succumb to the Labor disease.

“We are not the Labor Party,” he said, stressing that the party, the government and the country were “better than that”.
The showdown came to a head after a brace of senior ministers were understood to have shifted away from Mr Abbott, led crucially by Ms Bishop.

Promising a more consultative style devoid of Mr Abbott’s slogans and captain’s picks, Mr Turnbull’s decision was announced via a live press statement at 4pm.

It came after key ministers, marginal seat MPs, and even some in relatively safe safe seats around the country, previously loyal to Mr Abbott, had decided they were heading for defeat under his leadership.

Mr Turnbull advised the Prime Minister he no longer enjoyed his confidence at a 3.30pm meeting in which he advised he intended to contest the leadership, and requested that the position be declared vacant to facilitate a ballot.

“This is not a decision that anyone could take lightly,” Mr Turnbull said.

“I have consulted with many, many colleagues, many Australians, many of our supporters in every walk of life. This course of action has been urged on me by many people over a long period of time.”

In a critical precursor to that discussion, Ms Bishop had called on Mr Abbott prior to question time. According to the Turnbull camp, Ms Bishop had asked him to stand down. However versions differ on that meeting with the Abbott camp advising the meeting had been sought to advise Mr Abbott that Mr Turnbull was about to move and would likely have the numbers to succeed.

The high-risk showdown came five days before a crucial byelection in the Perth seat of Canning, catching many observers and pro-Abbott MPs off-guard.

It was announced within hours of a Fairfax-Ipsos poll revealing Canning voters are lining up to hammer the government in a massive 10 per cent swing against them, making the seat ultra-marginal.

As both deputy Liberal leader and the government’s most senior minister on the ground in Canning, Ms Bishop’s intervention was crucial. It is understood she told Mr Abbott his government had utterly failed to communicate its key economic message to voters and was heading for electoral defeat at the general election whenever it was held.

Explaining his move, Mr Turnbull unloaded on Mr Abbott, declaring the government was drifting without economic leadership, and had offered slogans rather than explanations for policy.

In a statement aimed as much at party room doubters as the public, Mr Turnbull said the government had not been successful in “providing the economic leadership that we need”.

“It is not the fault of individual ministers,” he counselled.

“Ultimately, the Prime Minister has not been capable of providing the economic leadership our nation needs. He has not been capable of providing the economic confidence that business needs.

“We need a different style of leadership. We need a style of leadership that explains those challenges and opportunities, explains the challenges and how to seize the opportunities. A style of leadership that respects the people’s intelligence, that explains these complex issues and then sets out the course of action we believe we should take and makes a case for it. We need advocacy, not slogans.”

Calling for a new style of governing in which the intelligence of voters is respected, he said it was not clear that could occur under Mr Abbott.

“He will cease to be Prime Minister and he’ll be succeeded by Mr Shorten.”

As relations within the government turned toxic, Mr Hockey hit back publicly at Mr Turnbull, declaring his statements about economic policy were “wrong” and claiming Mr Turnbull had never questioned the economic direction and had never raised objections in cabinet.

In a strategic move designed to placate right-wing Liberals worried about his social progressivism, Mr Turnbull has assured Liberals he will not seek to introduce an emissions trading scheme, will not seek to increase Australia’s emissions reduction targets, and will not seek to overturn the recent party room decision to put same-sex marriage reform to a plebiscite.

Mr Turnbull gave no hint of favouring an early election if elected, but the new dynamic has made the timing of that impossible to predict.

Holden’s heart to survive factory closure

holden

Holden will stop building cars in Australia in 2017, but parent company General Motors will ensure some of its vehicles around the world will have the beating heart of a Holden.

The automotive giant has reversed its decision to send more than 100 powertrain engineering and development jobs overseas, instead keeping them working in Australia.

The surprise announcement came as the company celebrated the unveiling of the new Commodore VFII, the last of the Australian-built Commodore line, which stretches back to 1978.’We should be really proud of that.

The reason we’ve been able to retain those people is because of the talent of the team that’s based here,’ Holden general manager Mark Bernhard said.

While Ford is killing off the Falcon nameplate that has been the stronghold of its Australian production since 1960, Holden has announced the Commodore name will live on through an as-yet unnamed imported model post-2017.

Dozens of refugees including babies, children drown as boat capsizes off Greece

1442183537687

Athens: Thirty-four refugees, almost half of them babies and children, drowned when their boat sank off a Greek island on Sunday, almost certainly the largest death toll in those waters since the migrant crisis began, the coastguard said.

Four babies, six boys and five girls died when the wooden vessel carrying them overturned on Sunday morning, about   five kilometres east of the small island of Farmakonisi, close to Turkey’s coast.

Tens of thousands of mainly Syrian refugees have braved rough seas this year to make the short but precarious journey from Turkey to Greece’s eastern islands, mainly in flimsy and overcrowded inflatable dinghies.

Thousands have died, many of them taking the much longer crossing from Libya, in Europe’s worst migrant crisis in decades.

Details of the nationalities and ages of the victims of Sunday’s sinking off Farmakonisi were not  yet available.

The coastguard said 68 people were rescued from the water and another 30 survivors from the same boat were found on Farmakonisi.
On Lesbos, an island which has borne the brunt of Greece’s migrant intake, a Reuters photographer saw 10 dinghies arriving within 90 minutes on Sunday.

One inflatable carrying about 70 refugees, including many children, burst about 100 metres from the shore. Locals pulled infants and toddlers – including a two-month-old baby cradled by his father – ashore on rubber rings.

Greece has regularly called for more help from authorities in dealing with the influx, and caretaker Prime Minister Vasiliki Thanou urged the bloc on Sunday to agree on a more comprehensive policy.

Other countries were wrong to criticise Greece’s response to the flow of migrants, Mrs Thanou said during a trip to Lesbos.

“We would urge them to consider the responsibility of guarding a 16,000-kilometre-long coastline of European borders … and whether a future Europe of principles can be constructed by building walls,” she said.

Most refugees reaching Greece quickly head north to other countries, with Germany the most favoured destination.

EU states have so far failed to reach agreement over proposals by commission president Jean-Claude Juncker to accept a mandatory quota system for  taking refugees.
