One of the most important archaeological excavations carried out in Greece so far this year.

Archaeologists in Greece have discovered the ruins of an ancient 10-room palace dating back to the Mycenaean Age. A variety of important archaic inscriptions, artifacts, including swords, seals, clay pots and scripted tablets, have been found nearby according to the Greek Culture Ministry’s announcement on Tuesday.

Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey is set to lead a renewed push among his parliamentary colleagues for Australia to become a republic.

Mr Hockey and Labor senator Katy Gallagher are forming a Parliamentary Friendship Group to revive debate about the issue, which has been effectively dormant since the failed 1999 referendum.

The announcement was made by Mr Hockey’s friend, and the head of the Australian Republican Movement, Peter FitzSimons at the National Press Club.

“The key thing I wish to say today, is we are putting the band back together,” FitzSimons said.

“It’s the hope in the next five years, Australia can begin the formal process towards becoming the Republic of Australia.

“A republic that we deserve to be, an independent sovereign nation beneath the Southern Cross we stand, a sprig of wattle in our hand.”

The Treasurer supported the 1999 referendum and is one of the most prominent republicans in Government, along with Cabinet colleague Malcolm Turnbull, who led the Australian Republican Movement before entering Parliament.

However, the timing of today’s announcement is likely to raise eyebrows within Government, given the Coalition has struggled in recent months to maintain focus on its agenda of jobs and economic growth.

In 2004, Mr Hockey described the then-Labor leader Mark Latham’s push for another republic referendum as a “distraction”.

“When you’ve got hospitals and schools and police and security as you talked about — the issues that really matter — including national security, Mark Latham is off talking about the republic and as an avowed republican, I don’t know where he’s coming from,” he told Lateline at the time.

In that interview, he said if another referendum were to be held “let’s get it right and let’s get it up”.

A lion has attacked a tour guide in the same Safari park in which a much-loved lion was killed by a US tourist.

A lion has attacked and killed a safari guide in the same Africa game park in which Cecil the lion was controversially hunted down in July.

The attack happened in Zimbabwe when the guide was leading a group of tourists in the national park that was the home of Cecil the lion, who was killed by an American bow hunter.

Quinn Swales was leading a walking safari in Hwange National Park when he spotted six lions on Monday, police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said on Tuesday.

“One of the lions had cubs and they became hostile. Mr. Swales at first manage to scare the lions away but then the male lion later made a U-turn and attacked him,” Charamba told The Associated Press. None of the tourists was harmed, she said.

Swales was taking six tourists on a walking safari when he spotted fresh lion spoor and decided to track a pride of lions consisting of two females, two cubs and two males, according to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

The lion, named Nxaha, attacked Swales, the parks authority said. The lion had a collar that allowed researchers to track his movements.

Camp Hwange, the safari company that employed Swales, said the 40-year-old guide succumbed to the injuries on the same day he was attacked.

“It is with deep regret and great sadness that we are able to confirm the death of Quinn Swales, a Camp Hwange professional guide, who was fatally mauled by a male lion whilst out on a walking safari,” Camp Hwange said.

“He was tracking lions when a male lion unexpectedly charged,” said the park’s statement issued on Monday, adding that Swales was leading a photographic walking safari when he was attacked.

Camp Hwange’s Facebook page says it offers game drives and game walks where “game likely to be encountered include all of the cat family, wild dog, elephants and buffalo in huge numbers.”

Swales was an experienced professional with an excellent reputation in the safari community.

On the Camp Hwange Facebook page, where a statement of Swales’ death was posted, one user who went on a 10 kilometre walking safari led by Swales said: “After we left Hwange, our group talked about who we would want near if the end of the world ever came. Quinn was top of the list.”

Walking safaris in which tourists hike through African reserves teeming with dangerous big game are “highly popular and attacks by animals extremely infrequent,” said Trevor Lane, an official of the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe.

“I don’t recall any such incidents of an unprovoked attack around the Hwange area in the last 30 to 40 years,” said Lane.

“This is no reason to stop walking safaris. It’s been going on for years and it is a great experience. It is very popular, highly sought after.”

The killing of Cecil by dentist James Walter Palmer just outside Hwange park sparked outrage. Cecil was also collared for an Oxford University study.

Cecil was reportedly lured with bait from the safety of the park before being killed by Mr Palmer, an American dentist armed with a bow and arrow who paid $US55,000 ($76,804.92) to shoot a lion.

Palmer’s guide on the expedition, Zimbabwean Theo Bronkhorst, appeared in court last month and was granted $US1,000 bail pending his trial on September 28 on charges of organising an illegal hunt.

In a separate incident in Zimbabwe, the parks authority said a man who sold curios to tourists was killed by an elephant in the resort town of Victoria Falls, about 100 kilometres from Hwange, also on Monday.

A review of the fatal shooting of a taxi driver in Melbourne’s south east 22 years ago has led police to believe his death was the result of a planned hit not a robbery gone wrong, as previously thought.

Emanuel Sapountzakis, 25, was gunned down in Dandenong’s Police Paddocks Reserve sometime after 2:00am on March 2, 1993.

Several hours later a woman on a walk found him dead in the park.

His cab was found abandoned in Boronia.

Police believe he had picked up a passenger in Boronia shortly before his death.

A coronial inquest in 1997 found he was probably killed in a random robbery gone wrong.

But after a review of the case cold case detectives now believe his death was a planned murder over money.

Officers believe several people were involved in the hit.

“For over 20 years Emanuel’s family, including his [now] 24-year-old daughter have been left without answers,” Detective Senior Constable Kane Taylor said in a statement.

“We believe we are close to solving this investigation, but we just need a little bit more help.”

Detectives said they had information to suggest a maroon Nissan Skyline sedan, with a partial registration of DSD, was used in the killing.

Detective Taylor said he was confident someone knew who was responsible for the murder.

“We hope that by linking a maroon Nissan Skyline to the incident that memories will be prompted,” he said.

“I am appealing to those who have information to show some compassion and tell us what happened.”

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) is expecting 3,000 people a day to cross into the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

The Macedonian government came under fire over the weekend for its handling of the large influx of people looking to cross its border from Greece.

Police at the frontier used batons and stun grenades to push the migrants and refugees back from Macedonian territory.

“The UN refugee agency estimates that 80 percent of people waiting to cross the Greek-Macedonian border are fleeing the conflict in Syria,” reported euronews correspondent James Franey. “Police are allowing between 150 and 300 to cross at time. They then follow this railway track north to the town of Gevgelja where they look to move on to Serbia and Hungary and then to northern Europe as they look to build better lives.”

Many at a refugee transit centre in Gevgelja said they had made the treacherous crossing from Turkey to Greece using small inflatable boats.

Euronews spoke with Red Cross paramedic Aleksandar Januzoski about the health conditions affecting those in the centre.

“You have people that have small fractures to people that have blisters on their feet – cuts of different kinds – to graver situations in that you have people with epilepsy, high or low blood sugar and people with heart problems and different diseases on the respiratory tract,” said Januzoski.

Most people interviewed by Euronews said they wanted to head to Germany or Sweden to join relatives and friends in search of work and security.

Ένα νέο μυκηναϊκό ανάκτορο φέρνουν στο φως στην πεδιάδα της Σπάρτης οι αρχαιολογικές έρευνες που πραγματοποιούνται από το 2009 στο λόφο του Αγίου Βασιλείου, κοντά στο χωριό Ξηροκάμπι Λακωνίας. Κατά την ανασκαφική έρευνα ανευρέθησαν επίσης πολλές πινακίδες Γραμμικής Β’ Γραφής, της πρώτης δηλαδή καταγραφής της ελληνικής γλώσσας.

Όπως αναφέρει σε ανακοίνωση του το υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, οι γραπτές αυτές μαρτυρίες συνιστούν το πολυτιμότερο εύρημα της ανασκαφής, που καθίσταται ακόμη πιο σημαντικό καθώς εντάσσεται στη σφαίρα της πρωτοϊστορίας για τον ελληνικό χώρο, όπου τα γραπτά τεκμήρια είναι ελάχιστα.

Η ανασκαφή στον Άγιο Βασίλειο διεξάγεται τα τελευταία χρόνια υπό τη διεύθυνση της επίτιμης Εφόρου Αρχαιοτήτων Αδαμαντίας Βασιλογάμβρου και χαρακτηρίζεται ως μία από τις πιο σπουδαίες συστηματικές ανασκαφές στον τομέα της ελληνικής πρωτοϊστορίας.

Συγκεκριμένα, με την εφαρμογή μεθόδων γεωφυσικής διασκόπησης έχουν εντοπιστεί θαμμένα οικοδομικά κατάλοιπα με σταθερό προσανατολισμό σε έκταση 35 τουλάχιστον στρεμμάτων. Η αρχή της εγκατάστασης ανάγεται στην μεταβατική περίοδο από την Μεσοελλαδική στην Υστεροελλαδική-Μυκηναϊκή εποχή (17ος-16ος αι. π.Χ.), στην οποία χρονολογείται το νεκροταφείο κτιστών κιβωτιόσχημων τάφων και απλών λάκκων στην κορυφή του λόφου.

Στην ίδια εποχή χρονολογείται και η πρώτη οικοδομική φάση της εγκατάστασης, η οποία, σύμφωνα με τα μέχρι στιγμής στοιχεία, καταστράφηκε κατά την ΥΕ ΙΙΒ-ΙΙΙΑ1 περίοδο (τέλη 15ου-αρχές14ου αι. π.Χ), πιθανόν από πυρκαγιά.

Μετά την πρώτη αυτή καταστροφή, ιδρύονται νέα ισχυρά και εκτεταμένα ανακτορικά κτήρια. Αυτά αναπτύσσονται περιμετρικά μιας μεγάλης κεντρικής αυλής, στις δύο πλευρές της οποίας (νότια και δυτική) έχει αποκαλυφθεί στοά επί πεσσοκιονοστοιχίας.

Σε δωμάτιο του ορόφου της Δυτικής Στοάς φυλασσόταν ένα αρχείο του ανακτόρου, η ανασκαφή του οποίου βρίσκεται σε εξέλιξη. Οι ωμές πήλινες πινακίδες, στις οποίες ήσαν χαραγμένα τα κείμενα σε γραμμική Β γραφή, διατηρήθηκαν χάρη σε πυρκαγιά που επίσης κατέστρεψε τα νέα ανακτορικά κτήρια κατά την ΥΕ ΙΙΙ Α περίοδο (14ος αι. π.Χ.).

Το αρχείο περιλαμβάνει πινακίδες όλων των γνωστών από τα άλλα ανακτορικά κέντρα τύπων, φυλλόσχημες και σελιδόσχημες, καθώς και ετικέτες και πήλινα σφραγίσματα. Στα κείμενα αναφέρονται παροχές αγαθών σε ιερό ή ιερά, ανδρικά και γυναικεία ονόματα, τοπωνύμια και ο τίτλος άναξ στη γενική πτώση, άνακτος.

Με λατρευτικές – θρησκευτικές πρακτικές συνδέεται ένα από τα κτήρια που ανασκάπτονται ανατολικά της αυλής, το Κτήριο Α. Η φωτιά έψησε και διατήρησε σε ικανό ύψος την ωμοπλινθοδομή και την πηλοκονία των εσωτερικών διαχωριστικών τοίχων του, στο οποίο έχουν μέχρι στιγμής ερευνηθεί δέκα δωμάτια. Αυτά περιείχαν πολλά χαρακτηριστικά λατρευτικά αντικείμενα και σκεύη, όπως πήλινα ειδώλια βοοειδών και ελεφαντοστέινο ειδώλιο ανδρικής μορφής που κρατάει νεαρό μοσχαράκι ή ταύρο, μεγάλο πήλινο ρυτό σε σχήμα κεφαλής ταύρου, λίθινη πρόχους με διπλό χείλος, δύο μεγάλοι τρίτωνες κ.α.

Εκτός αυτών βρέθηκαν πολλά μικρά διακοσμητικά αντικείμενα καθώς και σφραγιδόλιθοι, αιγυπτιακοί σκαραβαίοι, κ.α. Σε ένα δωμάτιο φυλάσσονταν, πιθανόν τακτοποιημένα σε κιβώτιο από οργανικό υλικό, εικοσιένα χάλκινα ξίφη, ενώ κάτω από το δάπεδο ενός άλλου, βρέθηκε πυκνό στρώμα από οστά ζώων, αγγεία και πολύτιμα μικροαντικείμενα. Με το στρώμα αυτό είναι πιθανό να σχετίζονται τα υπολείμματα πυρών που εντοπίστηκαν σε ανοικτό χώρο ανατολικά του κτηρίου.

Μια μεγάλη ποσότητα θραυσμάτων τοιχογραφιών με χαρακτηριστικά μυκηναϊκά θέματα που βρέθηκαν στην επίχωση ενός δεύτερου κτηρίου (Κτήριο Β) και σε χώρο απόθεσης απορριμμάτων σε αδόμητη περιοχή, τεκμηριώνει την ύπαρξη τοιχογραφικού διακόσμου στα ανακτορικά οικοδομήματα.

Σύμφωνα με την ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, «η ανακτορική εγκατάσταση του Αγ. Βασιλείου μας παρέχει μια μοναδική δυνατότητα να διερευνήσουμε με τη χρήση των σύγχρονων μεθόδων ανασκαφής και ανάλυσης τη δημιουργία και εξέλιξη ενός μυκηναϊκού ανακτορικού κέντρου με στόχο την ανασύνθεση της πολιτικής, διοικητικής, οικονομικής και κοινωνικής οργάνωσης της περιοχής. Παράλληλα εκτιμάται ότι θα προκύψουν νέα στοιχεία σχετικά με τη μυκηναϊκή θρησκεία και ζητήματα γλωσσολογίας και παλαιογραφίας».

Το χώρο της ανασκαφής επισκέφθηκε την περασμένη Παρασκευή η αν. Γενική Γραμματέας του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού κυρία Μαρία Ανδρεαδάκη-Βλαζάκη, καθώς και μια δεύτερη σημαντική ανασκαφή που διεξάγεται στην ευρύτερη περιοχή της Σπάρτης: αυτή του Ιερού του Αμυκλαίου Απόλλωνα στο λόφο Αγίας Κυριακής στις Αμύκλες Λακωνίας.

Η ανασκαφή του Ιερού του Αμυκλαίου Απόλλωνα που διεξάγεται υπό τη διεύθυνση του ομότιμου καθηγητή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών Άγγελου Δεληβορριά, του Σταύρου Βλίζου από το Ιόνιο Πανεπιστήμιο, και την εποπτεία της Εφορείας Αρχαιοτήτων Λακωνίας, φέρνει στο φως ένα από τα σημαντικότερα ελληνικά ιερά με έναρξη ζωής στα γεωμετρικά χρόνια.

Η ερευνητική ομάδα διαφωτίζει αργά αλλά με επιμονή και υπομονή το θέμα του ναού (Θρόνου) του Απόλλωνα, που έχει απασχολήσει πολλούς επιστήμονες μέχρι σήμερα. Η έρευνα πραγματοποιείται κάτω από δυσχερείς συνθήκες, διότι το Ιερό έχει υποστεί εκτεταμένη καταστροφή κατά το παρελθόν.

Ειδικότερα, η συστηματική ανασκαφική έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε κατά την έναρξη του πενταετούς ερευνητικού προγράμματος Αμυκλών και ολοκληρώνεται αυτό το μήνα αποκάλυψε τη συνέχεια του περιβόλου κατά μήκος της δυτικής πλαγιάς του λόφου της Αγίας Κυριακής, όπου βρίσκεται το ιερό του Αμυκλαίου Απόλλωνα περίπου 5 χλμ. νοτίως της Σπάρτης.

Το σημαντικό αυτό εύρημα έρχεται να συμπληρώσει τα περισσότερο από ενθαρρυντικά πορίσματα των έως τώρα εργασιών.

Σύμφωνα με τα πεπραγμένα της περιόδου 2009-2013, ολόκληρη η επιφάνεια του λόφου της Αγ. Κυριακής που σχετίζεται με τη λειτουργία και τα μνημεία του ιερού ερευνήθηκε διεξοδικά. Με τις έρευνες αυτές εντοπίστηκαν στην κορυφή του λόφου λείψανα του πρωτοελλαδικού-μεσοελλαδικού οικισμού και προσδιορίστηκε η πρώτη μνημειακή φάση του ιερού στα υστερογεωμετρικά χρόνια με την αποκάλυψη του παλαιότερου περιβόλου.

Ταυτόχρονα, όμως, άλλαξαν τα δεδομένα της έρευνας που είχαν γίνει αποδεκτά έως την έναρξη των πρόσφατων εργασιών: Ο εντοπισμός της τάφρου θεμελίωσης του ναού, του λεγόμενου θρόνου του Απόλλωνα, δημιουργεί νέα δεδομένα σχετικά με τις διαστάσεις του οικοδομήματος, ενώ την εικόνα του αρχαϊκού ιερού συμπληρώνει βορειοδυτικά ένα μνημειακό πρόπυλο.

Όπως επισημαίνεται στην ανακοίνωση του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, σε δύσκολες μέρες, οι Έλληνες αρχαιολόγοι καταφέρνουν να παράγουν εξαιρετικά επιστημονικά αποτελέσματα και να συμβάλλουν στην ανάπτυξη των τοπικών κοινωνιών. Ειδικότερα, για το 2015 ξεπερνούν τις 150 οι συστηματικές ανασκαφές και επιφανειακές, γεωαρχαιολογικές και γεωφυσικές διεπιστημονικές έρευνες που διεξάγονται σε όλη την επικράτεια από την Αρχαιολογική Υπηρεσία, Ελληνικά Ιδρύματα με εξειδίκευση στον τομέα της αρχαιολογικής και παλαιοντολογικής έρευνας και Ξένες Αρχαιολογικές Σχολές, πάντα με την εξασφάλιση των απαραίτητων κατά νόμο εγκρίσεων.

«Ο μεγάλος αριθμός των συστηματικών ερευνών στον τομέα της αρχαιολογίας που πραγματοποιούνται κατ’ έτος, κυρίως κατά τους θερινούς μήνες, καταδεικνύει τη σημασία του αρχαιολογικού πλούτου και της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς της χώρας και τη σπουδαιότητά της παγκοσμίως. Η ηθική και υλική συμπαράσταση στο έργο των ερευνητών αποτελεί βασικό μέλημα του υπουργείου Πολιτισμού» καταλήγει η ανακοίνωση.

Δύσκολα γίνονται τα πράγματα στο φετινό Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ για τον Ολυμπιακό, κυρίως λόγω των αλλαγών στις οποίες προχώρησε η ΟΥΕΦΑ.

Στο πρώτο γκρουπ δυναμικότητας των ομάδων δεν υπάρχουν αυτές που είχαν τις οκτώ καλύτερες βαθμολογίες, αλλά οι πρωταθλήτριες των χωρών που βρίσκονται στο «top 8» της κατάταξης της Ευρωπαϊκής Ομοσπονδίας.

Αυτό σημαίνει πως στο πρώτο γκρουπ θα υπάρχουν ομάδες όπως η Μπενφίκα, η Ζενίτ ή η Αϊντχόφεν που ασφαλώς δεν αποτελούν «μεγαθήρια» και είναι… επιθυμητές από τον Ολυμπιακό αλλά και από τις άλλες ομάδες του τρίτου γκρουπ.

Τα… δύσκολα, ωστόσο, είναι στη δεύτερη οκτάδα, αυτή που αποτελεί το β’ γκρουπ. Κι αυτό διότι εκεί θα βρίσκονται –εκτός εξαιρετικού απροόπτου, μιας και απομένουν οι ρεβάνς των πλέι οφ του Champions League- σύλλογοι όπως η Ρεάλ και η Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης, η Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ, η Άρσεναλ και η Μάντσεστερ Σίτι.

Με λίγα λόγια φέτος είναι πολύ πιθανό στον Ολυμπιακό να «κάτσει» μια πιο… βατή ομάδα από το α’ γκρουπ κι ένα «μεγαθήριο» από το β’. Φυσικά πάντα υπάρχει το σενάριο των δύο πολύ δύσκολων αντιπάλων από τα ισάριθμα πρώτα γκρουπ, το οποίο στον Πειραιά ούτε καν θέλουν να το σκέφτονται!

Να σημειωθεί, πάντως, πως είναι πολύ πιθανό η Ρόμα να ανέβει στο γ’ γκρουπ, εφόσον αποκλειστεί μία από τις Λεβερκούζεν ή Βασιλεία που είναι ψηλότερα στην ειδική βαθμολογία της UEFA. Αν αποκλειστεί η Λεβερκούζεν, τότε η Σαχτάρ θα ανέβει στο β’ γκρουπ και κατά συνέπεια οι ουκρανοί θα είναι υποψήφιοι αντίπαλοι του Ολυμπιακού.

Our favourite soothing and calming remedy, chamomile (hamomili) can give a sophisticated touch to a frosty treat that is sure to please both kids and adults.

Other than being the ideal infusion before a good night’s sleep, chamomile is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity, while some studies also claim that chamomile extracts have anticancer effects.

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
3/4 cup lightly packed unsprayed chamomile flowers, picked over, gently submerged in water, and drained on paper towels
9 large egg yolks, room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons clover honey
pinch of coarse salt

Method:

1. Combine milk and cream in a heavy-bottomed medium saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and stir in chamomile. Cover mixture and let stand 10 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk together yolks, sugar, and salt in a large bowl until thoroughly combined.

2. Uncover milk mixture and bring to a bare simmer over medium-high heat. Remove from heat and gradually pour 1 cup milk mixture into yolk mixture, whisking constantly. Add remaining milk mixture all at once, whisking until just combined. Let stand until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Pour through a fine sieve into a bowl set in a larger bowl of ice water. Stir in honey and let stand, stirring occasionally, until cold, about 15 minutes.

3. Process mixture in an ice cream maker. Serve immediately or transfer to an airtight container and store in freezer up to 1 week.
