No room for comedy when it comes to the Greek drama

racistjokes_cafe

Controversial jokes about Greeks spark reactions

Within the last month two Australian cafes have taken down signs making light of Greece’s financial situation following complaints and disapproving comments from customers.

The first incident occurred in Sydney, when a chalkboard sign was placed out the front of a northern suburbs café stating: “What do you give a Greek with a scratchie? … A coin to scratch it with.”

The joke was not well-received by all, with one customer complaining on the business’ Facebook page, followed by several comments debating whether the sign was racist or not.
Angus McLellan, managing director of the venue, told SmartCompany the chalk board was “humour more than anything”.

“We have three Greek staff members who work for us … they were just taking the piss out of their own country.”

In another incident, a family-run café in Canberra posted a sign on the cash register last week with the wordplay: “EU announced today – that all future euro notes will now be printed on Greece-proof paper”

According to owner Peter Zimmerman, whose wife is of Greek Cypriot background, many of the patrons – including Greeks – had a laugh at the inscription.
However, the comment was received with dismay by an individual and was subsequently taken down.

“The problem is you can no longer say something or do something without offending one person.

“It had no intention to really offend somebody but if some people can’t have a bit of humour then I feel really sorry for them,” Mr Zimmerman told Neos Kosmos.

Calombaris on how to save Greece

George_Calombaris

The well-known chef believes Greece is being mismanaged.

“Τhere has to be a law and a rule,” chef says

Greek Australian celebrity chef George Calombaris is currently writing a story about his plan to save Greece from its current predicament.

The famous MasterChef judge was recently faced with Greece’s dire state when he was stopped at the airport and forced to reveal the amount of money he was taking back to Australia.

“When you’re wandering through customs and get a tap on the shoulder to ask how much cash you’re taking out of the country, you sort of go ‘geez, this isn’t good’,” Calombaris said.

“Greeks have the best country in the world in terms of climate, the islands, the beauty, the culture. Unfortunately, it has been given to the wrong people. It’s been mismanaged.”

The 36-year-old chef emphasised that his agenda does not involve any sort of financial plan, but instead offers a key to the emotional salvation of Greece’s people.

“If I was running the country, I would make tourism double or triple within three years.

“Why wouldn’t you want to travel to Greece, it is beautiful,” he added, stressing that “there also has to be a law and a rule.”

Calombaris, who travels to Europe at least once a year, highlighted that recent events in Greece should make Australian citizens realise how lucky they are to live in this country.

“I think the moral of the story is this, as Australians we need to look at this when we whinge about the dumb stuff; there is a reason why.”

Australia considering U.S. request to join air strikes in Syria

imagesCAH380ZT

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said on Friday that he was considering a formal request from the United States for Australia to join air strikes in Syria against the Islamic State militant group.

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) is already involved in bombing Islamic State targets in Iraq, but its aerial role in Syria has so far been limited to refueling and intelligence gathering.

“While there are processes that we need to go through and there’s no decision that should be made lightly here … we will carefully consider that request,” Abbott told reporters in Canberra.

“I want to make very clear that the consolidation of a terrorist state in eastern Syria and northern Iraq would be a catastrophe for the world.”

Επί του προκειμένου τώρα: Στις 19 Σεπτεμβρίου, στο Regal Ballroom που βρίσκεται στον αριθμό 218 της High St στο Northcote, θα έχετε την ευκαιρία να απολαύσετε μια μαγευτική παράσταση που ονομάζεται «Τα τραγούδια του πατέρα μου – Songs of the legends».

Greek Superleague kicks-off today

olmpiakos-fixtures-2014

The new campaign kicks-off with two simultaneous games at 19:15 Greek time.

The 2015/16 season of the Greek Superleague begins today with three games including the return to top flight football for Athens club A.E.K and Thessaloniki club Iraklis.

The new campaign kicks-off with two simultaneous games at 19:15 Greek time.

In Mytilne, AEL Kallonis host Iraklis, with Australian striker Kerem Bulut in the squad for the opening game. Bulut signed a three-year deal with Greek side Iraklis after parting ways with 2014 AFC Champions League winners Western Sydney Wanderers.

The former Sydney FC youth team player joins Iraklis, who have just been promoted from Greece’s second division, on a free transfer with a view to re-launching his career in Europe after previous spells in Turkey and the Czech Republic.

Also scheduled for a 19:15 kick off is the Panthrakikos against Asteras Tripolis in Komotini.
The late match on Saturday kicks-off at 21:30 and will see AEK Athens host Cretan side Platanias.
The big news for AEK fans is that new signing Diego Buananote may be included in the starting eleven, despite only signing for the club a week ago. Coach Traianos Dellas is expected to field an attacking line up to please the AEK faithful who will be expecting nothing short of victory in AEK’s first game back in the country’s premier league.

There are four games taking place on Sunday as Atromitos look to bounce back from their midweek Europa League defeat to Fenerbache when they take on Levadiakos, while Veria host PAS Giannena, both games start at 19:15.

Also at 19:15 PAOK entertain Xanthi at Toumba Stadium. PAOK, fresh off their 5-0 thrashing of Brondby in their Europa League qualifier, will be hopeful of continuing that form against a Xanthi side that has traditionally done well against them.

PAOK’s new Australian signing Terry Antonis is not expected to feature in the game, having only joined the club last week on a three year deal.

In an interview with PAOK TV Antonis called PAOK an “excellent team, with great people, great players and amazing fans.”

“When I was presented with the opportunity, I wanted to come play in my homeland, from where my grandparents and my parents are. I feel privileged to be here and it is my honor to play for PAOK.”

In Sunday’s late game, defending champions Olympiakos will look to start their campaign with a home win against Panionios. Olympiakos, who have announced they will not sign any more players during this transfer period, have made some very strong acquisitions already and are considered favourites to win the title again.

Coach Marco Silva’s biggest challenge will be juggling the demands of Greek Super League with that of the European Champions League, but he has a bigger squad than all of his rivals and anything less than another title will be deemed a failure by the supporters of the Piraeus club.

The first round action concludes on Monday when Panetolikos host Panathinaikos in a game PAO coach Yiannis Anastasiou knows his side must win following their dismal 0-0 midweek draw against Qabala in the Europa League play-offs.

PAO won’t have star signing Michael Essien in the team or new signing Mehdi Abeid, who just joined the Athens club from English Premier League side Newcastle United.

Meze: Greek cuisine’s most prominent offspring

mezerecipe5

A short insight into the history and most importantly the concept behind meze

No Greek gathering is complete without the little plates of mezethes on the table complementing the traditional anise-flavoured liquor of ouzo or tsipouro or just a glass of wine.

The word μεζέ (μεζέδες in plural) is of Turkish origin, borrowed from the Persian mazze, which means ‘taste’ and/or ‘snack’. Its history traces its roots back in antiquity in the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean region.

Ancient Greeks following their usual hospitality custom would never welcome guests without something to nibble along with the drink they offered.

But truthfully, nearly every Middle Eastern or Mediterranean country, and the Balkans as well, at some point developed the culinary tradition of small dishes served as appetisers or finger food.

The Byzantines and later the Persians are said to have greatly influenced and inspired Turkish culinary expertise, among others.

Therefore, before and during the years of the Ottoman Empire, a great number of elements from different civilisations made Turkish cuisine a blend rich in both flavour and variety.

The Turkish occupation left undeniable traces in the cuisine of Greece and among these a list of mouth-watering mezethes.

Even though mezethes can be served to start off a meal, they should be seen as a separate eating experience rather than appetisers.

In a Greek get-together it is common that a meal starts and ends with small savoury treats without any main dish served.

People gather around the table and drink the good old – often homemade – tsipouro or ouzo complemented by mezethes, which are shared by everyone.
But meze does not only stand as the perfect excuse for staying at home, but for having a fun night out as well.

A whole category of restaurants called mezethopolia (μεζεδοπωλεία) is dedicated to serving exclusively meze dishes.

In fact, the heart and soul of meze is said to be in Volos, a coastal city in central Greece.

If you ever find yourself in a mezethopolio in Volos, have in mind that you are only allowed to choose your drink of preference.

Each time you order another round, the chef sends out one or more different small savoury plates that best pair with the drink you’re having.

The great thing about meze is that it can merely be a platter of olives, fried vegetables or some squid tubes; as simple as that.

Alternatively, you can prepare a more ‘sophisticated’ one, choosing from the recipes below.

Greek Food:Fried feta with honey and sesame seeds

honeyrecipe1

Having its origins in Cretan cuisine, this mouth-watering feta version can be your new favourite appetiser.

Ingredients:

250g feta cheese
2 eggs
1 teaspoon of paprika
1 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
70-80g of flour, enough to coat the feta
60g sesame seeds
olive oil for frying
4 tablespoons of honeyMethod:

1. To prepare the fried feta, start by cutting the feta cheese into little blocks, about 1.5cm thick.
2. Crack the eggs into a bowl and beat with a fork. Into another bowl add the flour, the paprika and the pepper and mix with a spoon to combine the ingredients. Into a third bowl, add the sesame seeds.
3. Roll each piece of feta into the eggs, then roll into the flour. Roll each piece again into the eggs and then in the sesame seeds, so that all sides are covered.
4. Heat about 6-7 tablespoons of olive oil into a frying pan, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan, and fry the feta until nicely coloured. Use a slotted spoon to flip the fried feta, so that it is nicely coloured on all sides. When done, place on some kitchen paper to absorb the extra oil.
5. In the meantime, warm the honey into a saucepan, or the microwave, until liquid.
6. Serve the fried feta while still hot with a drizzle of honey.

Greek bonds rally but volume remains razor-edge thin

The yield in 10-year Greek government securities rose 20 basis points to 9.55 per cent on Thursday, the highest in a week Photo: Bloomberg

From afar, it looks like finally some good news for Greek markets as returns on government bonds beat European peers. Close up, most investors won’t touch them.

The biggest fund managers know that trading volume still is too low for them to buy or sell without buffeting prices. The quotes by banks, showing a 48 per cent return in the third quarter, reflect perceptions of political deals over Greece’s debt more than the nation’s ability to avoid default by implementing the economic measures as part of its bailout.

“Greece is important to us in as much as it is a proverbial canary in a European bond-market coal mine,” said Mark Dowding, partner and money manager at BlueBay Assset Management in London, which oversees $US62 billion. “We don’t like Greece’s track record on reforms, and have no plan to buy its bonds at this point.”

After months of high drama and a near meltdown of Greece’s financial system, the euro region’s most indebted nation managed to agree with its European creditors to secure a third rescue, to the tune of €86 billion. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is now seeking to quell a party rebellion against the conditions tied to the aid package by stepping down and holding an election as early as next month. It will be Greece’s second this year.

The return on Greek bonds this quarter through August 19 followed a 26 per cent loss in the first six months, according to Bloomberg World Bond Indexes. It brought the year-to-date return to 9.5 per cent, compared with 2.6 per cent from Italy’s bonds and 0.7 per cent from Germany’s.

Those few fund managers who were able to take the risk may have reaped the gain. Michael Krautzberger, head of euro fixed income at BlackRock International, said in July that some of the company’s total-return accounts bought a “tiny” amount of Greek bonds. BlackRock didn’t respond to an emailed question this week on whether it still holds them.

The flow of news – approval by the German Parliament for the new bailout and then Greece’s payment on time to the European Central Bank on Thursday – have not only boosted Greece’s debt. It buoyed government bonds of Italy and Spain, whose finances are among the more vulnerable among euro nations to a slowdown or rising political tensions.

Yet on Thursday, news of another impending election showed how sensitive the market is. Greek bonds extended declines and Spanish and Italian debt erased earlier gains. The yield in 10-year Greek government securities rose 20 basis points to 9.55 per cent, the highest in a week.

“Things are definitely looking better in the short term,” said Cosimo Marasciulo, head of government bonds at Pioneer Investments, which oversees $US242 billion. “But there are still some big hurdles to get over.”

Take state asset sales. In 2011, under Greece’s first bailout plan, €50 billion was to have been raised by 2015 through privatisation of public companies and real estate. Only €7.7 billion in sales have been agreed so far, according to data from Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund.

Then there’s the overall debt burden, which Tsipras’s government and International Monetary Fund officials have said is unsustainable. With an economic slump crippling tax revenue, the debt-to-gross domestic product ratio could rise toward 200 per cent, according to an IMF forecast in July. By comparison, most advanced economies are well under 100 per cent.

“The country is insolvent,” said John Anderson, a money manager at Smith & Williamson, an investment company with the equivalent of $US25 billion of assets. “Investment in Greek bonds is a political play, not a financial one.”
