An increasing number of Greek doctors, especially those in highly specialized fields, have been leaving for jobs abroad, according to the Athens Medical Association (ISA), which warns of major staffing shortages in the years to come.

ISA figures show that from 2010 and to the present, more than 7,500 doctors have emigrated from Greece, when the average up until 2009 was at around 550 per year. In the first six months of this year alone, it issued 790 certificates of competence (one of the papers needed for medical staff to work abroad).

“One of the biggest losses in the crisis has been that of great minds,” ISA chief Giorgos Patoulis told Kathimerini. “In a short time the national healthcare system will have an aged personnel and will be unable to staff services.”

Qualified nurses – around 8,000 of whom are unemployed – are also having trouble finding work, with the Greek Nurses’ Union saying that it issued 74 certificates in 2010, 357 in 2012 and 349 last year.

Η άτυχη κοπέλα είχε επιλεχθεί από τη φυλή της να ζήσει με τους θεούς, στην πραγματικότητα όμως τη θυσίασαν στην κορυφή του ηφαιστείου, που βρίσκεται σε ύψος 6739 μέτρων. Το σώμα της έχει διατηρηθεί σε πάρα πολύ καλή κατάσταση, σίγουρα ξεγελώντας για την πραγματική ημερομηνία του θανάτου της, 500 χρόνια πριν δηλαδή.

Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, πολλά παιδιά οδηγούνταν σε ψηλές κορυφές, τα τάιζαν φύλλα κακαόδεντρου και στο τέλους τους έδιναν να πιουν δηλητήριο. Για να ολοκληρώσουν το έργο, οι ιερείς τα στραγγάλιζαν ή τα χτυπούσαν στο κεφάλι, ενώ σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις απλά τα άφηναν να πεθάνουν από το κρύο.

Καλλιτεχνική απεικόνιση του αρχαίου φιδιού που διέθετε τέσσερα άκρα

Μέχρι σήμερα είχαν ανακαλυφθεί αρχαία φίδια με δύο άκρα που βρίσκονταν στο πίσω μέρος του σώματός τους. Ερευνητική ομάδα από τη Βρετανία ανακάλυψε το απολίθωμα ενός αρχαίου προγόνου των σύγχρονων φιδιών, που είχε τέσσερα μικρά ποδαράκια, δύο μπροστινά και δύο πίσω.

Μεταβατικό

Είναι το πρώτο τετράποδο φίδι που ανακαλύπτεται και το οποίο ζούσε στη βορειοανατολική Βραζιλία πριν από 113 έως 126 εκατ. χρόνια. Πρόκειται για ένα μεταβατικό ζώο, μεταξύ αρχαίας σαύρας και σύγχρονου φιδιού.

Το περίεργο πλάσμα είχε μήκος σχεδόν 20 εκατοστά και τα άκρα του είχαν μήκος τέσσερα χιλιοστά τα μπροστινά («χέρια») και επτά χιλιοστά τα πίσω. Τα τέσσερα πόδια, που είχαν το καθένα πέντε δάχτυλα με μακριά νύχια στις άκρες τους, μάλλον δεν χρησιμοποιούνταν για την κίνηση του ερπετού στο χώμα, αλλά για να κυνηγά τη λεία του και να σκάβει λαγούμια κάτω από το έδαφος.

Η αγκαλιά

Το φίδι με την επιστημονική ελληνο-λατινική ονομασία Tetrapodophis amplectus, δηλαδή «Τετράποδος όφις που αγκάλιαζε» (τα θύματά του ή τη σύντροφό του), δεν φαίνεται να κολυμπούσε, αλλά ζούσε στην ξηρά, γεγονός που ενισχύει την εκδοχή ότι τα φίδια αναπτύχθηκαν στη στεριά και όχι στο νερό. Η διαμάχη για την προέλευση των φιδιών είναι μία από τις πιο χρόνιες μεταξύ των παλαιοντολόγων και των βιολόγων.

Οι βρετανοί και γερμανοί ερευνητές, με επικεφαλής τον καθηγητή Παλαιοβιολογίας Ντέιβιντ Μάρτιλ του Πανεπιστημίου του Πόρτσμουθ, δήλωσαν ότι το συγκεκριμένο απολίθωμα φιδιού, με βάση τα ανατομικά χαρακτηριστικά του, σαφώς παραπέμπει σε στεριανό και όχι σε θαλάσσιο οργανισμό.

Όπως είπε ο Μάρτιλ «βρήκαμε τον πρόγονο όλων των φιδιών, τον χαμένο κρίκο μεταξύ των τετράποδων σαυρών και των φιδιών», όπως ο Αρχαιοπτέρυξ αποτελεί τον κρίκο μεταξύ δεινοσαύρων και πουλιών. Ο Μάρτιλ επεσήμανε ότι το βραζιλιάνικο απολίθωμα βρισκόταν ξεχασμένο σε ένα γερμανικό μουσείο, με την ένδειξη «άγνωστο δείγμα». Παραμένει ασαφές πότε ακριβώς βρέθηκε το απολίθωμα στη Βραζιλία και πώς κατέληξε -πιθανώς παράνομα- στη Γερμανία. Η ανακάλυψη δημοσιεύεται στην επιθεώρηση «Science».

Η εξέλιξη

Η νέα ανακάλυψη περιπλέκει μάλλον τα πράγματα, καθώς εφέτος τον Ιανουάριο είχε προηγηθεί η ανακάλυψη του απολιθώματος του αρχαιότερου φιδιού, που ζούσε πριν από περίπου 160 εκατ. χρόνια. Έτσι, το τετράποδο φίδι δεν είναι μεν το αρχαιότερο, αλλά σίγουρα -από εξελικτική σκοπιά- είναι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα απολιθώματα που έχουν βρεθεί μέχρι σήμερα.

Όλα τα αρχαία φίδια εκτιμάται ότι ζούσαν στη Γκοντβάνα, την αρχαία υπερ-ήπειρο που κάποτε κάλυπτε το νότιο ημισφαίριο και αποτέλεσε τη νότια «συνιστώσα» της κατοπινής υπερ-ηπείρου Παγγαίας. Σήμερα πια τα φίδια έχουν εξαπλωθεί σε όλο τον πλανήτη.

Ακρωτήριο Κανάβεραλ, Φλόριντα

Ακόμα ένα εξωπλανήτη με χαρακτηριστικά παρόμοια της Γης, εντόπισαν οι επιστήμονες σε απόσταση 1.400 ετών φωτός από τον πλανήτη μας, στον αστερισμό του Κύκνου, χρησιμοποιώντας το διαστημικό τηλεσκόπιο Kepler.

O Kepler -452b έχει μέγεθος 60% μεγαλύτερο της Γης και περιστρέφεται γύρω από το μητρικό του άστρο εντός της «φιλόξενης ζώνης», εντός της οποίας η ακτινοβολία που δέχεται επιτρέπει την ύπαρξη νερού σε υγρή μορφή.

Το μητρικό του άστρο είναι παρόμοιο σε μέγεθος και ακτινοβολία με τον δικό μας Ήλιο, έχει όμως αρκετά μεγαλύτερη ηλικία.

Ο επιστημονικός διευθυντής της NASA Τζον Γκράνφελντ χαρακτήρισε τον συγκεκριμένο εξωπλανήτη «ό,τι κοντινότερο μέχρι σήμερα» με τη Γη.

O Kepler -452b έρχεται να προστεθεί σε μία σειρά άλλων «συγγενών» εξωπλανητών που έχουν εντοπιστεί με το τηλεσκόπιο Kepler. Μεταξύ αυτών είναι ο Kepler 186f και ο Kepler -22b.

Το διαστημικό τηλεσκόπιο Kepler έχει ως αποστολή την αναζήτηση πλανητών και ειδικά εκείνων με συνθήκες ευνοϊκές για την ανάπτυξη ζωής.

Μέχρι στιγμής έχει υποδείξει περισσότερα από χίλια σημεία του διαστήματος στα οποία υπάρχουν αυξημένες πιθανότητες να βρίσκεται ένας πλανήτης με αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά.

European Union plans to seal the world’s largest free trade deal with the United States are threatened by intractable differences over food names, none more so than the right of cheese makers to use the term “feta.”

Negotiators talk of accelerated progress and hope to thrash out a skeleton agreement on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) within a year, aiming for a major boost to growth in the advanced Western economies.

But geographical indications (GIs), a 1,200-long list ranging from champagne to Parma ham, present a major headache.

At the same time as eurozone leaders are ordering Greece to balance its budget and liberalize its product markets, EU trade negotiators are fighting to defend its signature cheese.

GIs are a cornerstone of EU agricultural and trade policy, designed to ensure that only products from a given region can carry a name. To the United States, it smacks of protectionism.

“It’s politically extremely important in Europe. As (the EU) phases out direct agricultural support, there has to be a trade-off by promising to do more in trade policy,” said Hosuk Lee-Makiyama, director of the European Center for International Political Economy. “For 20 years they have been fighting about it at the World Trade Organization even if the economic value is disputed.”

EU member states will have to approve any deal and will need food name protection as compensation for EU farmers facing a flood of US beef and pork imports.

Agriculture is not a sizeable part of either the EU or the US economy but farmers retain political muscle, as French livestock and dairy producers showed this week by forcing the government to offer aid after protests including road blockades.

Washington does not object to protection of niche items such as British Melton Mowbray pork pies. But negotiators face a very difficult task to find a balance for widely produced feta, Parma ham or parmesan, the biggest maker of which is America’s Kraft Foods.

The EU introduced GIs and designations of origin in 1992, securing protection for Greek feta, which means “slice,” 10 years later when it declared that non-Greek producers’ use of the term was “fraudulent.”

6,000 year heritage

It is a view echoed by Christina Onassis, marketing manager at the Lytras & Sons dairy in central Greece. She describes the unique plants and microflora of Greece’s mountainous regions and says feta “imitations” mostly use cow’s milk.

“For 6,000 years, Greece has produced continuously using milk from ewes and goats,” she said. “We also ripen the cheese for days, which does not happen in any other feta production.”

The issue is about more than just national pride for near-bankrupt Greece. Its feta exports rose 85 percent between 2007 and 2014 to 260 million euros, and sales to countries outside the EU more than doubled.

US agricultural and trade experts generally recognize the region-specific terms such as “Gouda Holland” or “Camembert de Normandie,” meaning that US producers can still make and name their own gouda and camembert cheeses.

However, they argue that the European Union has gone too far by including the likes of gorgonzola and feta – terms they say are not region-specific but generic like cheddar or mozzarella, which do not have GI status.

“Show me on the map where feta is?” asked one US trade negotiator.

In fact, under EU law, the feta-producing region covers almost the whole of the Greek mainland plus the island of Lesvos. Only cheese using milk from here can be called feta.

The European Commission says names can be protected even if they are not linked to a particular place. Feta, it says, is so closely connected to Greece as to be identified inherently as a Greek product.

In 2012 several non-European food producers and associations, many from across the Americas, formed the Consortium for Common Food Names (CCFN) to fight what they see as Europe’s appropriation of generic food terms.

“There’s nothing wrong with GIs but is something a true GI or just a method of production?” said CCFN Executive Director Jaime Castaneda. “Most consumers do connect feta with Greece but most also connect cheddar with England but it does not have to be made there.”

US producers, he says, could lose billions of dollars in income if they are forced to rename their products.

Even before an EU-US free trade deal, Castaneda says US businesses are already affected in countries like South Korea, whose trade accord with Europe includes GI protection.

“It’s affecting us substantially in international markets, such as Korea, by preventing exports,” he said. “You see it too at international food shows in Europe. This is a never-ending issue.”

Ron Buholzer, president of the family-owned Klondike Cheese Co in Wisconsin, which makes award-winning feta and muenster cheeses, shares that view, deeming it outrageous that anyone would claim sole ownership of these names.

“This is an economic issue for us, certainly, but it’s also personal – it’s about what’s right and fair,” Buholzer said.

The United States says the EU system is unfair because many American producers of traditional products are immigrants from Europe or their descendants, such as the Buholzer family.

It also notes that EU members have had doubts.

Both Denmark and Germany took the Commission to court over its moves to grant Greece the exclusive right to use the name feta, with initial success in 1999 before losing in 2005.

A compromise was found in the EU-Canada trade accord (CETA), allowing Canadian producers already making “feta” or “gorgonzola” to continue doing so, while new entrants would have to adopt other terms such as “feta-style.”

Greece and US dairy exporters have already called this unacceptable, highlighting the difficulties that lie ahead.
