Σε «εφιάλτη» εξελίχθηκε για τον Ολυμπιακό το εκτός έδρας παιχνίδι του με την Ατλέτικο Μαδρίτης, για την 5η αγωνιστική των ομίλων του Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ.

Οι «ερυθρόλευκοι» πραγματοποίησαν τη χειρότερη φετινή τους εμφάνιση στη διοργάνωση την Τετάρτη στο «Βιθέντε Καλντερόν», με αποτέλεσμα να γνωρίσουν βαριά ήττα με 4-0 σκορ από τους «ροχιμπλάνκος», που έκαναν ό,τι ήθελαν στον αγωνιστικό χώρο.

Πλέον, και μετά τη νίκη με 2-0 της Γιουβέντους στην έδρα της Μάλμε, για να καταφέρει η ομάδα του Μίτσελ να προκριθεί στους «16» του Τσάμπιονς Λιγκ, θα πρέπει την τελευταία αγωνιστική να νικήσει στο «Καραϊσκάκη» τους Σουηδούς, περιμένοντας παράλληλα ήττα της Γιουβέντους από την Ατλέτικο στο Τορίνο.

Η εστία των Πειραιωτών παραβιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στο αποψινό ματς από τον Ραούλ Γκαρθία στο 9ο λεπτό, έπειτα από λάθος μεταβίβαση του Ρομπέρτο, ενώ στη συνέχεια ανέλαβε δράση ο Μάντζουκιτς, ο οποίος με χατ-τρικ (38′, 62′, 65) μετέτρεψε σε… περίπατο το παιχνίδι για το συγκρότημα του Σιμεόνε.

Μάλιστα η Ατλέτικο, η οποία δεν κατέβασε ταχύτητα, ακόμη κι όταν είχε… καπαρώσει το «τρίποντο», σημείωσε και πέμπτο γκολ με τον Γκριεζμάν, ωστόσο αυτό ακυρώθηκε, καθώς ο Χιμένεθ ήταν σε θέση οφσάιντ και επηρέαζε την φάση.

Το ματς δεν αντέχει ιδιαίτερης κριτικής και η έκταση του σκορ, με την οποία ηττήθηκε η ομάδα του Πειραιά, θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να είναι ακόμη μεγαλύτερη.

Οι «ροχιμπλάνκος» έδειξαν την ανωτερότητά τους από το πρώτο λεπτό, έκλεισαν στα καρέ τους τους «ερυθρολευκους», που έδειχναν να μην έχουν καθαρό μυαλό, κι έτσι το πρώτο γκολ δεν άργησε να έρθει.

Μόλις στο 9ο λεπτό, έπειτα από φάση διαρκείας στα καρέ του Ολυμπιακού η μπάλα κατέληξε στον Ρομπέρτο. Ο Ισπανός γκολκίπερ θέλησε να διώξει την μπάλα, ωστόσο την έστειλε με λάθος μεταβίβαση στον Χουανφράν, ο οποίος με τη μία βρήκε τον Ραούλ Γκαρσία, που σκόραρε από κοντά.

Το γρήγορο γκολ της Ατλέτικο καταρράκωσε τη ψυχολογία των πρωταθλητών Ελλάδας. Η άμυνα των Πειραιωτών πραγματικά πελαγοδρομούσε, με αποτέλεσμα να «μυρίζει» γκολ κάθε φάση των γηπεδούχων, οι οποίοι εν τέλει διπλασίασαν τα τέρματά τους, εκμεταλλευόμενοι αυτή τη φορά το τραγικό λάθος του Μποτία.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα στο 38ο λεπτό, μετά από σέντρα του Ανσάλντι η μπάλα πέρασε μέσα στη μεγάλη περιοχή της ελληνικής ομάδας, κι αφού ο Ισπανός αμυντικός στην προσπάθειά του να διώξει βρήκε αέρα, ο Μάντζουκιτς από κοντά την έστειλε στο βάθος της εστίας του Ρομπέρτο.

Αυτό το γκολ άνοιξε την όρεξη του Κροάτη φορ, ο οποίος στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο έμελλε να παραβιάσει την εστία των Πειραιωτών ακόμα δύο φορές.

Στην αντίπερα όχθη ο Ολυμπιακός είχε να αντιπαρατάξει σε ολόκληρο το πρώτο μέρος μόλις μία ευκαιρία στο 22ο λεπτό, όταν ο Αμπιντάλ σούταρε μετά από σέντρα του Ντομίνγκεζ, με την μπάλα ωστόσο να περνάει εκατοστά δίπλα από το αριστερό δοκάρι του Μόγια, ο οποίος ήταν θεατής στο σημερινό ματς.

Στο δεύτερο ημίχρονο ο Μίτσελ επιχείρησε να κάνει την ομάδα του πιο επιθετική, ρίχνοντας το… βάρος στα άκρα και πέρασε στον αγωνιστικό χώρο τους Φουστέρ και Κασάμι, αντί των Αφελάι και Μανιάτη, με τον Ισπανό να πηγαίνει στα αριστερά και τον Ελβετό στην αντίθετη πλευρά.

Παρά το… ανακάτεμα της τράπουλας από τον τεχνικό του Ολυμπιακού, οι Πειραιώτες δεν μπόρεσαν να ξυπνήσουν από τον αγωνιστικό «λήθαργο», κι έτσι οι γηπεδούχοι συνέχισαν να κάνουν ό,τι θέλουν στον αγωνιστικό χώρο.

Οι «ερυθρόλευκοι» έτσι μοιραία είδαν τον Μάντζουκιτς στη συνέχεια να φτάνει στην επίτευξη ακόμη δύο τερμάτων στο 62ο και στο 65ο λεπτό, με αποτέλεσμα το τελευταίο σφύριγμα του Βόλφγκανγκ Σταρκ να προκαλέσει ανακούφιση στην ομάδα του Μίτσελ, η οποία παραδόθηκε άνευ όρων, όντας επηρεασμένη και από τη διακοπή στο ελληνικό πρωτάθλημα.

Arsenal FC secured their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase with a 2-0 victory against already-qualified Borussia Dortmund that leaves top spot in Group D still to play for.

Yaya Sanogo and Alexis Sánchez scored in each half as the home side bounced back from a disappointing 3-3 draw against RSC Anderlecht here last time out to inflict a first defeat of the European campaign on the German visitors.

Arsenal got off to a terrific start and went ahead in the second minute. Cazorla exchanged passes with Sanogo on the right and the 21-year-old slotted his first Arsenal goal under the advancing Roman Weidenfeller. Sanogo was only in the team because of injury to Danny Welbeck and the Frenchman nearly had another soon after when he burst clear only to miscontrol in the area.

Dortmund slowly worked their way back into the game, but it was not until the 20thminute that they really threatened. Łukasz Piszczek crossed low from the right and the ball flashed tantalisingly across goal and just out of Ciro Immobile’s reach. Moments later Henrikh Mkhitaryan fired over as Dortmund pressed.

Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, standing in for the injured Wojciech Szczęsny, was tested for the first time six minutes before the interval and proved up to the task. İlkay Gündoğan played the ball deep into the area where Piszczek headed it back into the path of Mkhitaryan, whose low shot was well blocked by the Argentinian’s legs.

Arsenal were back in the ascendancy at the start of the second half. Weidenfeller dived at full stretch to keep out Cazorla’s low drive, then moments later Arsenal came even closer, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain striking the bar with a dipping drive on his 100th appearance for the club.

The second goal was not long in coming and it was no surprise that it was the inspirational Alexis Sánchez who scored it. The Chilean curled in his 12th goals of the season for Arsenal with a low shot from the just outside the area that left Weidenfeller no chance. Arsenal could yet snatch top spot from Dortmund.

PFC Ludogorets Razgrad had Georgi Terziev to thank after his 88th-minute equaliser denied Liverpool FC what would have been a vital Group B victory in Sofia and earned the hosts a rousing point – although it was still not enough to keep his team in qualifying contention.

Instead of losing 2-1 to a Liverpool side playing catch-up on second-placed FC Basel 1893, with Rickie Lambert and Jordan Henderson having replied to Dani Abalo’s third-minute opener for the Bulgarian title holders, Terziev nodded past Simon Mignolet after Svetoslav Dyakov flicked on a Wanderson corner. The late leveller could not save Ludogorets from elimination but nonetheless damaged Liverpool’s chances as only a home win against Basel – who are two points better off – on matchday six will now suffice.

If the evening started with local fans discussing the merits of coach Georgi Dermendzhiev replacing injured forward Roman Bezjak with midfielder Dani Abalo and not striker Younes Hamza, the Spaniard put a quick end to the debate. Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet could not handle a shot from Marcelinho and the makeshift attacker took his opportunity for 1-0. The 27-year-old Abalo had also scored in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

After clearing their heads, Liverpool produced a quick riposte. Ludogorets defended a long ball with fatal hesitancy and Lambert headed beyond Vladislav Stoyanov with two defenders stood watching. It was the England forward’s first UEFA Champions League goal.

The highly motivated hosts reacted positively, belying their bottom ranking in the section, and were nearly rewarded when Kolo Touré almost turned an Aleksandar Aleksandrov cross into his own net. Troubled by Ludogorets’s rapid attacking players, Brendan Rodgers’ men were living dangerously.

However, backed by about 2,000 travelling fans, the visitors resisted, improved and even managed to claim a half-time lead. With 37 minutes played, Raheem Sterling was too fast for the right side of the home back line and put in a perfect pass to Henderson, who did well to squeeze the ball over Stoyanov.

Come the second half Ludogorets attempted to regain the initiative but were not as menacing as in the opening 45. A Virgil Misidjan effort and Fábio Espinho free-kick were their only real chances, whereas the fleet-of-foot Sterling again turned provider for the Reds, only Lambert’s header was blocked and, following up, Henderson fired over from seven metres. Stoyanov also denied the Liverpool winger in a one-on-one situation before, in a late twist to the plot, Terziev conjured the Ludogorets equaliser from a corner.

Mario Mandžukić struck a hat-trick as Club Atlético de Madrid sealed their place in the round of 16 thanks to an emphatic Group A victory over Olympiacos FC.

Knowing a win would confirm their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages with a game to spare, the hosts made a fast start, Juanfran enjoying particular success down the right. The defender twice crossed for Mandžukić in the opening five minutes, although the Croatian was unable to apply the finishing touch, while a Raúl García header brought a smart stop from former Atlético goalkeeper Roberto, who enjoyed a mixed night on his return to the Vicente Calderón.

Last season’s runners-up did not have to wait long to make the breakthrough, however, as Roberto cleared a back-pass straight to Juanfran inside the penalty area. The full-back unselfishly squared for García, who clipped a subtle finish over the sprawling keeper at the near post.

Éric Abidal volleyed over as the visitors offered a rare foray forwards in search of an immediate riposte, but it was Atlético who were turning the screw. Cristian Ansaldi forced a smart Roberto stop from distance before Tiago fired over from the edge of the box. A second goal was not long in coming, Ansaldi sending in a low delivery from the left that was completely missed by Alberto Botía, allowing a grateful Mandžukić to tap in from close range.

Roberto then denied Arda Turan on the stroke of half-time as the Group A leaders set a tone that would continue into the second 45 minutes. With Atlético dominating possession, their Turkish winger was allowed space on the right just past the hour, and his precise cross found Mandžukić for the forward’s second goal of the night.

Three minutes later Mandžukić completed his hat-trick, nodding in a Gabi free-kick before departing to a standing ovation. His replacement Antoine Griezmann had an effort disallowed for offside, but not even that could dampen spirits on an excellent night for the Spanish champions.

MELBOURNE Victory’s admission in to the Victorian National Premier League competition next season will see it open their doors to dozens of talented youngsters.

Both Victory and Melbourne City will play their youth teams in Victoria’s second-tier league in 2015 and Victory announced on Wednesday that it will also field a team in the under 20s competition.

The Victorian season runs from about March to September, while the National Youth League – which pits youth teams from most A-League clubs against each other – traditionally runs from October to late February.

It means that Victory will have up to 46 players training for and playing in competitive matches for 12 months of the year, moving it in to line with clubs from top European and South American countries.

The youth teams will continue to be based at AAMI Park alongside the senior team players and coaching staff, while recruitment – particularly for the under 20s side – will now begin in earnest.

“Entry into the NPL enhances the club’s commitment to providing the best high performance environment we can for the development of some of the most talented young players in Victoria, and the country,” Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said.

“It also provides a defined pathway through an A-League club environment for the advancement of their careers.

“The benefit to young players is they will be coached and educated through the Melbourne Victory system and have the opportunity to work with elite coaches, mentors and conditioning and medical experts throughout their time with us, to be the best they can be.”
