Real Madrid booked their place in the Champions League last 16 with a narrow but comfortable victory over a depleted Liverpool side at Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema scored the decisive goal for the reigning European champions in the 27th minute, peeling away from Kolo Toures and applying a clinical finish to Marcelo’s whipped cross from the left flank.

Cristiano Ronaldo endured a rare off-night and Brendan Rodgers introduced Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling in the second half in a bid to find a Liverpool equaliser, but the visitors rarely troubled the Madrid defence.

Rodgers made seven alterations to the the side that suffered a dispiriting 1-0 Premier League loss at Newcastle on Saturday – Gerrard, Sterling and Mario Balotelli among those on the bench as their boss cast an eye towards this weekend’s Premier League clash with leaders Chelsea.

Simon Mignolet experienced a predictably busy evening but his team-mates offered a growing threat in the second half, with Adam Lallana the closest to finding an equaliser.

Real poured forwards once more in the closing stages as they looked to make sure of a 12th consecutive win in all competitions, but Ronaldo was unable to equal Raul’s Champions League all-time record of 71 goals.

Fresh from a brace including a spectacular volley in Real’s 4-0 win at Granada on Saturday, James Rodriguez forced Mignolet to palm an early 20-yard effort behind at full stretch.

The Belgian goalkeeper was called into action again in the 10th minute when an error from Martin Skrtel allowed Benzema to tee up Ronaldo.

A handful of important blocks from the defenders stationed in front of Mignolet saw Liverpool weather the early pressure and eventually play with increased assurance, but they fell behind with 27 minutes played.

Isco exchanged passes with Ronaldo to find Marcelo and the left-back crossed for Benzema to steer the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

As they did in Liverpool, Real sought a swift second to kill off the game after opening the scoring – Mignolet turning away a stinging Ronaldo free-kick before Kolo Toure touched a lofted pass from Raphael Varane onto the roof of his own net under pressure from Benzema.

Ronaldo uncharacteristically missed his kick on the end of Luka Modric’s chipped 39th-minute through ball and, although Emre Can was wasteful on a rare venture into the Real box, Liverpool were grateful to see no time added for first-half stoppages.

Mignolet continued to get the better of Ronaldo in their personal duel, grasping a 49th-minute side-footed effort at the second attempt.

Alberto Moreno then gave Iker Casillas his first save of the night in the Madrid goal and the Liverpool full-back also played in a pass for Lallana to cleverly turn and slide a shot narrowly beyond the far post.

Fabio Borini’s 61st-minute free-kick deflected wide off a disorganised Real defensive wall and that relatively rocky period prompted Carlo Ancelotti to bring on Gareth Bale for Rodriguez, the Wales winger ending three weeks on the sidelines with a gluteal injury.

As Rodgers prepared to send on Gerrard and Sterling to exploit an increasing sense of Real vulnerability, Toure produced an excellent last-ditch challenge to thwart Ronaldo.

Benzema was unsuccessful from another teasing Marcelo cross in the 69th minute before Bale struck the crossbar as the Brazilian supplied further ammunition.

As it was, Liverpool retained a measure of pride but three straight European defeats means there is no further room for error in their remaining group encounters with Ludogorets and Basel.

Juventus scored twice in as many minutes after the hour mark as they recovered from 2-1 down to defeat Olympiacos FC in UEFA Champions League Group A.

After consecutive European losses, to Club Atlético de Madrid and the Greek side, Juventus started in determined mood, forcing their opponents to defend deep. The Serie A leaders, however, had to wait until 16 minutes had elapsed before seriously testing Roberto, Claudio Marchisio obliging with a powerful shot from distance that the goalkeeper tipped over the crossbar.

Five minutes later Paul Pogba embarked on a run that was halted by Alberto Botía a few metres outside the penalty area – prime Andrea Pirlo territory. Having scored a free-kick on Saturday against Empoli FC, Pirlo repeated the feat with a brilliant curling effort over the wall. Not a bad way for the midfielder to mark his 100th appearance in Europe’s top club competition.

Juventus’s advantage lasted only three minutes, though, as Botía headed in Alejandro Domínguez’s right-wing corner. The Old Lady reacted and could have swiftly retaken the lead, but Leonardo Bonucci nodded over from a good position. Álvaro Morata then fired wide with just Roberto to beat following a pass by Carlos Tévez.

Marchisio failed to hit the target with a volley from close range and Pogba placed a low attempt wide from the edge of the box as Massimiliano Allegri’s men continued to press.

The home team had another opportunity to score ten minutes after the interval when a dribble by Tévez prised open the visiting defence. The Argentinian international passed to the unmarked Arturo Vidal on the right, but the midfielder hesitated, enabling Roberto to smother.

Olympiacos punished Juventus’s profligacy on 61 minutes, Delvin N’Dinga heading in Giannis Maniatis’s hooked return cross after a free-kick had been partially cleared. Juventus’s response was swift and devastating. First, substitute Fernando Llorente’s header hit the upright, the ball then striking the unfortunate Roberto and rebounding into the net.

The Italian outfit regained the initiative moments later through Pogba, who celebrated a century of games for Juventus in all competitions with a powerful right-foot drive from the edge of the area after his first effort had been blocked. Roberto denied the Bianconeri a fourth in added time, superbly palming Vidal’s spot kick against the crossbar, following Luka Milivojević’s foul on Tévez.

Ο Ολυμπιακός ηττήθηκε 3-2 από τη Γιουβέντους στη ματσάρα του Τορίνο, αλλά εξακολουθεί να κρατά την τύχη στα χέρια του με την ΕΠΕΜΒΑΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΡΟΜΠΕΡΤΟ, παραμένοντας στη δεύτερη θέση του ομίλου (πρώτη η Ατλέτικο, 2-0 τη Μάλμε). Μέσα σε λίγα λεπτά χάθηκε ένα τεράστιο διπλό των πρωταθλητών Ελλάδας.

Με τους ουρανούς στο Τορίνο να έχουν ανοίξει για τα καλά και τη βροχή να πέφτει ασταμάτητη, η μεγάλη μάχη του Ολυμπιακού με τη Γιουβέντους ξεκίνησε με πίεση των Ιταλών, έλεγχο του αγώνα από το ξεκίνημά του από την πλευρά τους και προσπάθεια να κλείσουν τους Πειραιώτες στο μισό γήπεδο.

Η ελληνική ομάδα δυσκολευόταν να κρατήσει τη μπάλα στα πόδια της, την ώρα που ο Πίρλο έπαιρνε το παιχνίδι πάνω του και προσπαθούσε να περάσει κάθετες μπαλιές πίσω από το χώρο του κέντρου. Εν μέσω της πίεσης που ασκούσαν οι παίκτες της Γιουβέντους, το κερδισμένο φάουλ στο 21’ λίγο έξω από την περιοχή του Ολυμπιακού, αποτέλεσε μια ιδανική ευκαιρία για τον σπεσιαλίστα αρχηγό. Η εκτέλεση του φάουλ από τον Πίρλο ήταν πράγματι αριστουργηματική και με τον Ρομπέρτο να μην μπορεί να κάνει τίποτα, το 1-0 ήταν γεγονός.

Πριν όμως κοπάσουν οι πανηγυρισμοί των Ιταλών, ο Ολυμπιακός όχι απλά έδειξε ότι δεν πτοείται, αλλά με παλικαρίσιο τρόπο «πάγωσε» το Τορίνο μόλις τρία λεπτά αργότερα! Ήταν ένα εξαιρετικά εκτελεσμένο κόρνερ από τον Ντομίνγκες, που έστειλε τη μπάλα συστημένη στον Μποτία και εκείνος με άπιαστη κεφαλιά «εκτέλεσε» τον Μπουφόν και ισοφάρισε.

Η Γιουβέντους προσπάθησε να συνέλθει από το «χτύπημα», διατήρησε την πίεση και τον πλήρη έλεγχο του ματς, αλλά η αστοχία αυτή τη φορά (και όχι ο Ρομπέρτο) την ανάγκασε να πάει στο ημίχρονο με το σκορ στο 1-1.

Ούτε η κεφαλιά του Μπονούτσι στο 28’, ούτε το τετ-α-τετ του Μοράτα στο 31’, ούτε το σουτ του Πογκμπά στο 44’ είχαν το επιθυμητό –για τους Ιταλούς- αποτέλεσμα.

Στην επανάληψη η Γιουβέντους μπήκε φουλ επιθετικά και έκλεισε τον Ολυμπιακό, χάνοντας μια σπουδαία ευκαιρία με τον Τέβες στο 56’ (έσωσε ο Αμπιντάλ). Οι «ερυθρόλευκοι», ωστόσο, κατάφεραν να ισορροπήσουν γρήγορα, με αποτέλεσμα όχι απλώς να «παγώσουν» το παιχνίδι, αλλά να «παγώσουν» για δεύτερη φορά ολόκληρο το γήπεδο!

Ήταν μια εκτέλεση φάουλ από τον Ντομίνγκες στο 61’, με τον Μανιάτη να κάνει το γύρισμα από τα δεξιά και τον Εντινγκά να πετάγεται στο πρώτο δοκάρι και με καρφωτή κεφαλιά να νικάει τον Μπουφόν, σημειώνοντας το 1-2, μέσα σε ένα ανεπανάληπτο πανηγυρικό ξέσπασμα από τους παίκτες και τους οπαδούς του Ολυμπιακού που βρίσκονταν στις εξέδρες.

Η συνέχεια όμως, έμοιαζε με εφιαλτικό σενάριο! Παρά το ανεβασμένο πλέον ηθικό, η άμυνα του Ολυμπιακού έπεσε για λίγα λεπτά σε τρικυμία με καταστροφικά αποτελέσματα.

Αρχικά ήταν μια φάση στο 65’ με πολλές καραμπόλες και τη μπάλα να πηγαίνει στο δοκάρι από το κεφάλι του Γιορέντε. Η μπάλα όμως, μας έχει πει ο Όσιμ τι είναι: από το δοκάρι, φεύγει και χτυπάει πάνω στον Ρομπέρτο και καταλήγει στα δίχτυα!

Σα να μην έφτανε η άτυχη αυτή στιγμή, μέσα σε ένα λεπτό η Γιουβέντους ανέτρεψε πλήρως την κατάσταση που είχε αρχίσει να διαμορφώνεται, κάνοντας το 3-2 με δυνατό σουτ του Πογκμπά μέσα από την περιοχή!

Το ματς μετετράπη σε αληθινό θρίλερ, με τον Ολυμπιακό να χάνει σπουδαία ευκαιρία στο 77’ με τον Ελαμπντελαουί να σουτάρει διαγώνια αλλά ελάχιστα άστοχα και από την άλλη τους Μπονούτσι με κεφαλιά στο 80’ και τον Τέβες στο 85’ με σουτ από πλεονεκτική θέση, να στέλνουν τη μπάλα λίγο άουτ.

Η πίεση των Ιταλών έφερε ένα κερδισμένο πέναλτι στις καθυστερήσεις, ε ανατροπή του Τέβες από τον Μιλιβόγεβιτς. Όμως ο τρομερός Ρομπέρτο, είχε τον τελευταίο λόγο, πραγματοποιώντας μια σπουδαία επέμβαση στην εκτέλεση του Βιδάλ!

Το 3-2 ήταν το τελικό αποτέλεσμα, με τον Ολυμπιακό να πληρώνει την αδράνειά του για ελάχιστα λεπτά μετά το δεύτερό του γκολ, αλλά να διατηρεί ένα σπουδαίο πλεονέκτημα σε περίπτωση ισοβαθμίας με τη Γιουβέντους.

The Greek soccer federation denied on Monday media reports that it has lost confidence in national coach Claudio Ranieri.

“There is no problem of collaboration with Mr Claudio Ranieri. Anything written or spoken in the media or rumored bears no relation to reality,» a statement by the federation said.

The federation added that Ranieri «continues to work hard and systematically for the success of the national team with a view to qualification of our team to the 2016 European Championships in France.”

In an interview with Greek state television station NERIT on Monday, the 63-year-old coach – who replaced Fernando Santos after the Portuguese left following the World Cup finals in June – said he was surprised with his team’s poor start in the Euro qualifiers so far.

Home losses to Romania (1-0) and Northern Ireland (2-0) and a 1-1 draw in Finland have left the Greeks with just one point in the group.

“I honestly did not expect such a start from the team,» said Ranieri.

“I knew it would be difficult. But I want my players on the pitch to give everything and give their maximum capabilities. I want my players to eat grass,» added the Italian, who has a two year contract.

Ranieri has come under heavy criticism from the Greek media for the poor results so far.

Last month the federation appointed former captain Giorgos Karagounis to act as liaison between Ranieri and the players in order to help bridge a communication gap.

Ranieri has a lot to live up to in terms of his predecessors successes.

Santos had taken the team for the first time in their history to the last 16 of the World Cup finals, and prior to that to the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, while before that German Otto Rehhagel guided Greece to a surprising Euro 2004 title.

Ranieri was sacked by Monaco in May and had very little time to gain knowledge of the Greek players and it showed with the immediate loss to Romania.

Ranieri led Monaco to second place in Ligue 1 in 2013 and also had spells with Chelsea, Serie A clubs Inter Milan, Napoli, Fiorentina, Juventus, Roma and Parma as well as Spanish outfits Atletico Madrid and Valencia.
