The 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete will be remembered this week with a packed program organised by the Pancretan Association and Cretan Brotherhood.

The program begins on Friday 23 May with the arrival in Melbourne from Canberra of representatives of the Hellenic Armed Forces including Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Petkos (Hellenic Airforce) and his wife Erifilli Metalidou as well as Colonel Athanasios Zafiropoulos (Hellenic Airforce). The Pancretan Association book launch of The Battle of Crete; The Untold Stories by historian Dr Peter Ewer will take place followed by a dinner in honour of the delegation of the Hellenic Armed Forces and the Cretan Organisations by the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne Christina Simantiraki.

On Saturday 24 May will be the official visit and school ceremony at the Saturday Morning Greek Schools of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne, followed by a luncheon. Then the official dinner to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of Crete will take place under the auspices of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand and in honour of our Veterans. Musicians Sifis Tsourdalakis, Adonis Xylouris, Nikos Xylouris and Nikos Alygizakis will entertain those attending, with the Pancretan and Cretan Brotherhood Dance Groups also performing.

After the church service on Sunday 25 May a parade and wreath laying ceremony will take place at the Shrine of Remembrance with the participation of the Hellenic and Australian Armed Forces, local groups, community organisations, Australian schools and, more importantly, the Australian Veteran Associations. A visit to the olive tree planted in the gardens of the Shrine of Remembrance will be followed by a ceremony at the Australian Hellenic Memorial in the Domain Gardens hosted by the Australian Hellenic Memorial Foundation. The day will finish with a luncheon hosted by the Cretan Brotherhood and the Pancretan Association at the Cretan Centre.

On Monday 26 May, the official visit to Parliament House, hosted by the Friends of Greece-Victoria Parliamentary Committee in the presence of the President of the Legislative Council, will take place, then the official visit to the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese with Bishops Dervis Ezekiel and Militoupoleos Iakovos. Afterwards, there will be a luncheon in honour of the delegation of the Hellenic Armed Forces by the President of the World Council of Cretans Antonis Tsourdalakis. This will be followed by a visit to the Victorian Army Barracks to meet with Australian Defence personnel.

The Greek Tourism Minister, Ms Olga Kefalogianni, and the vice president of the Greek National Tourism Organisation, Mr Christopher Kaparounakis, were in Australia last week to promote tourism to Greece and to sign a working holiday visa agreement between Australia and Greece.

This is an important step in bringing Greece up to date with the way young Australians pursue their Antipodean travel. Our geographic distance often demands that our youth undertake longer trips overseas and subsidise their expenses with paid part-time jobs, often in the hospitality industry. This agreement will encourage both Greeks and non-Greek travellers to include Greece as part of their plans along with the usual other European destinations.

Minister Kefalogianni also spoke of ‘Thematic Travel’ objectives in marketing tourism. Gastronomy, health spa, historical and religious travel are becoming popular in various demographic groups. The GNTO is keen to work closely with travel wholesalers globally to develop these markets. The diaspora market has a distinct advantage – thousands of foot soldiers to help spread the word! This is an incredible resource that must be utilised and the GNTO can develop initiatives towards this end.

Whilst there is no need to convince Australian Greeks of the motivation to travel to Greece – ‘preaching to the converted’ – it is important that all Greek Australians consider themselves as ambassadors for Greece and promote travel to all their friends, acquaintances and a wider Australian audience.

The Hellenic Initiative, founded in 2012 as an alliance of global Greek and Philhellene communities, is an organisation that also intends to play a role in the recovery of Greece by stimulating investment and connecting our amazing global diaspora community. Apart from the obvious business investment, tourism, as the number one industry in Greece, should play a significant role in the economic and social recovery.

Minister Kefalogianni has promised that the Greek National Tourism Organisation will closely engage with the major Greek diaspora communities towards this important goal.
We must all work together to promote Greece and Greek tourism. Our rich cultural history and proud traditions deserve nothing less.

Αυξάνεται η «ψαλίδα» στο ποσοστό του πληθυσμού που έχει μια θέση εργασίας, μεταξύ Ελλάδας και Ευρώπης, σύμφωνα με τα στοιχεία της eurostat πυο είδαν σήμερα το φως της δημοσιότητας.

Ειδικότερα, η Ελλάδα βρίσκεται στην τελευταία θέση της πανευρωπαϊκής κατάταξης, με ποσοστό 53,2% για το 2013 έχοντας χάσει το 13,3% των απασχολούμενων από το 2008 που ξεκίνησε η κρίση. Αλλά και τότε η ελληνική αγορά εργασίας βρισκόταν σε δυσμενή θέση, με τον μέσο όρο απασχόλησης της ΕΕ να βρίσκεται στο 70,3%, απλά τώρα η απόσταση που τη χωρίζει από το στόχο που έχει τεθεί για το 2020 (70% απασχόλησης) φαντάζει αδύνατο να καλυφθεί.

Αντίστοιχη πτώση καταγράφεται και στο ποσοστό απασχόλησης στις ηλικιακές ομάδες 55-64 ετών: από το 42,8% το 2008, το ποσοστό υποχώρησε στο 35,6% το 2013.

Πρώτη σε απασχόληση το 2013 κατατάσσεται η Σουηδία (79,8%), ακολουθεί η Γερμανία (77,1%) και η Ολλανδία(76,5%). Η Σουηδία μάλιστα αποτελεί και τη μόνη χώρα μέλος της ΕΕ με ποσοστό απασχόλησης πάνω από 70% για τους εργαζόμενους ηλικίας από 55 έως και 64 ετών. Αντίθετα, η Ελλάδα, μαζί με τη Μάλτα, τη Σλοβενία, την Κροατία και την Ουγγαρία συγκαταλέγεται στις χώρες της ένωσης με την χαμηλότερη απασχόληση στην ηλικιακή ομάδα των 55-64.

Οι Έλληνες δουλεύουν πολύ

Οι Έλληνες εργάζονται κατά μέσο όρο 40,7 ώρες ανά εβδομάδα έναντι 40,4 ωρών που είναι ο μέσος χρόνος απασχόλησης στην Ευρώπη. Οι άντρες στην Ελλάδα εργάζονται κατά μέσο όρο 41,5 ώρες την εβδομάδα, ενώ οι γυναίκες εργάζονται 39,5 ώρες.

Τη Δευτέρα θα κυκλοφορήσει το πρώτο βιβλίο για την πτήση MH370 των Malaysia Airlines, που χάθηκε από τα ραντάρ στις 8 Μαρτίου. Το εν λόγω βιβλίο αναφέρει ότι το αεροσκάφος ενδέχεται να καταρρίφθηκε στη διάρκεια στρατιωτικών γυμνασίων, ένα ατύχημα που συγκαλύπτεται από τις Αρχές.

Ειδικότερα, το βιβλίο με τίτλο «Πτήση MH370 – Το μυστήριο», το οποίο έγραψε ο Αγγλοαμερικανός συγγραφέας Νάιτζελ Κόθορν, επικαλείται ανώνυμες πηγές και αναφέρει ότι στη δημοσιότητα δόθηκαν ψευδείς πληροφορίες, ώστε να επικεντρωθεί σε λάθος σημείο η έρευνα για το αγνοούμενο Boeing 777, αναφέρει σε σημερινό της άρθρο η αυστραλιανή εφημερίδα «The Sun Herald».

Το βιβλίο, το οποίο θα εκδοθεί από τον εκδοτικό οίκο «New South Books» του Σίδνεϊ, επικαλείται έναν ισχυρισμό του Νεοζηλανδού Μάικ Μακέι, ο οποίος είπε ότι είδε ένα φλεγόμενο αεροπλάνο από την εξέδρα άντλησης πετρελαίου στην οποία εργαζόταν στον Κόλπο της Ταϊλάνδης στις 8 Μαρτίου, την ημέρα της εξαφάνισης του αεροσκάφους.

Ο Κόθορν συνδέει το γεγονός αυτό με τα κοινά στρατιωτικά γυμνάσια ΗΠΑ–Ταϊλάνδης, που διεξάγονταν στην περιοχή την εποχή εκείνη, ενώ ο συγγραφέας επισημαίνει ότι αν η πτήση MH370 είχε καταρριφθεί κατά λάθος στη διάρκεια γυμνασίων με πραγματικά πυρά, «οι εμπλεκόμενοι θα είχαν κάθε λόγο να κρατήσουν τη σιωπή τους για το συμβάν».

Τέλος, αξίζει να αναφερθεί πως ο ίδιος ο συγγραφέας ισχυρίζεται πως αν βρεθεί το μαύρο κουτί του Boeing, τότε αυτό ενδέχεται να είναι πλαστό, τοποθετημένο από αυτούς που σχεδίασαν τη συγκάλυψη του δυστυχήματος.

Χιλιάδες νέοι στο εξωτερικό (και στην Αυστραλία) για ανεύρεση εργασίας.

Συνεχίζεται αμείωτη η φυγή των Ελλήνων προς το εξωτερικό. Το ποσοστό κυρίως των νέων και καταρτισμένων επιστημόνων και τεχνιτών που εγκαταλείπουν τη χώρα για μια καλύτερη τύχη αυξάνει κάθε χρόνο κατά 40%, ενώ οι χώρες προτίμησης είναι η Γερμανία, η Βρετανία, ο Καναδάς και η Αυστραλία (κυρίως για άτομα που είναι πολιτογραφημένοι Αυστραλοί).

Στη Γερμανία πέρυσι μετανάστευσαν περίπου 34.000 Έλληνες, λίγοι περισσότεροι έφυγαν για τη Βρετανία, ενώ πολλοί επιλέγουν τη Σουηδία, το Βέλγιο, τη Γαλλία και άλλες ευρωπαϊκές χώρες.

Η ανάγκη μετανάστευσης δεν είναι άγνωστη στους Έλληνες, όπως ξέρουμε πολύ καλά εμείς εδώ στην Αυστραλία, ωστόσο, η τεράστια διαφορά αυτού του ρεύματος φυγής που έχει προκαλέσει η βαθιά οικονομική κρίση, είναι το γεγονός ότι εγκαταλείπουν τη χώρα ικανοί επιστήμονες, καταρτισμένοι τεχνικοί και ταλαντούχοι φοιτητές. Με άλλα λόγια, η Ελλάδα χάνει μεγάλο ποσοστό του ικανότερου δυναμικού της, άτομα εξειδικευμένα σε κλάδους που είναι απαραίτητοι για την ανάπτυξή της.
Όσοι φεύγουν, ιδιαίτερα οι νεότεροι, δεν έχουν σκοπό να επιστρέψουν, τουλάχιστον σύντομα. Κι αν τις περισσότερες φορές επιθυμούν να γυρίσουν στην Ελλάδα, η ανεργία, η αναξιοκρατία και η έλλειψη αντικειμένου απασχόλησης, τους σπρώχνουν και πάλι στο εξωτερικό.

«Όσοι φεύγουν, φεύγουν για πάντα. Γιατί να ξαναγυρίσουν; Να κάνουν τι; Σε όλα μας τα νοσοκομεία, υπάρχουν γιατροί που έχουν επιστρέψει από το εξωτερικό. Ρώτα ποιος δεν το μετάνιωσε που γύρισε… Κι όσοι μπορούν, ξαναφεύγουν» μας δήλωσε Έλληνας επιστήμονας που έφτασε στην Αυστραλία πρόσφατα.
Το υψηλότερο ποσοστό Ευρωπαίων που θέλουν να μεταναστεύσουν το κατέχουμε οι Έλληνες. Σύμφωνα με την Κομισιόν, 400.000 Έλληνες σκέπτονται τη μετανάστευση ενώ ένας τους τέσσερις δεν επιθυμεί να επιστρέψει.

Αυτό απάντησε στην κυβέρνηση ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten.

Ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Bill Shorten, πέταξε το γάντι στον πρωθυπουργό, Tony Abbott, καλώντας τον να προκηρύξει πρόωρες εκλογές αν πιστεύει ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα είναι αδύναμο.

Ο κ. Shorten ολοκλήρωσε τη θεσμική «απάντηση» της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης στον πρώτο προϋπολογισμό του κυβερνώντος Συνασπισμού με την ανοιχτή πρόκληση στον πρωθυπουργό, να πραγματοποιήσει την απειλή του για πρόωρη προσφυγή στην κάλπη, αν τα κόμματα της αντιπολίτευσης προσπαθήσουν να παρακωλύσουν το έργο της κυβέρνησης, καταψηφίζοντας τα βασικά μέτρα του προϋπολογισμού. «Αν θέλετε πρόωρες εκλογές, δοκιμάστε μας. Αν νομίζετε, ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα είναι αδύναμο (μετά τις μεγάλες απώλειές του στις εθνικές εκλογές του 2010) τολμήστε εκλογές» προέτρεψε τον πρωθυπουργό.

Όπως αναμενόταν, ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης ανακοίνωσε, ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν πρόκειται να νομιμοποιήσει τις περικοπές δαπανών για την υγεία, την παιδεία, τις κοινωνικές παροχές, μήτε τους νέους φόρους που περιλαμβάνει ο πρώτος προϋπολογισμός της κυβέρνησης Abbott.

Ο κ. Shorten κατηγόρησε τον πρωθυπουργό για συνειδητή κατάργηση του κοινωνικού συμβολαίου με τον αυστραλιανό λαό, που τίμησαν όλες οι προηγούμενες κυβερνήσεις της χώρας, το οποίον εγγυάται ιατρονοσοκομειακή περίθαλψη μέσω του εθνικού συστήματος υγείας Medicare, παροχή ποιοτικής παιδείας, αξιοπρεπή διαβίωση της μέσης οικογένειας και των συνταξιούχων και πρόσβαση όλων των πολιτών στην τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση της χώρας.

«Απόψε ομιλώ εκ μέρους του αυστραλιανού λαού. Ομιλώ εκ μέρους των 9 εκατομμυρίων οικογενειών, που ο πρωθυπουργός και τα μέλη της συντηρητικής κυβέρνησής του αδυνατούν να καταλάβουν, διότι είναι μονίμως αλλοτριωμένοι από την πραγματικότητα» είπε ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης και πρόσθεσε:
«Ο αυστραλιανός λαός προδόθηκε από τον πρωθυπουργό, που άλλα υποσχόταν προεκλογικά και άλλα πράττει μετεκλογικά» σχολίασε ο κ. Shorten, και υπέδειξε στον πρωθυπουργό, ότι «δεν μπορεί, όσο και αν προσπαθεί, να κρύψει την αναξιοπιστία του, διότι ο λαός αντιλαμβάνεται το ψέμα, όσο επιδέξια και να του το σερβίρουν».
Κατά τον κ. Shorten, η οικονομική πολιτική της κυβέρνησης Abbott αντανακλά τις ιδεολογικές αποστεώσεις της συντηρητικής παράταξης οι οποίες, αν μεταφραστούν σε έργα, θα διχάσουν την αυστραλιανή κοινωνία σε δύο στρατόπεδα και θα αλλάξουν το χαρακτήρα της.

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα πιστεύει στην ισοσκέλιση του προϋπολογισμού, αλλά με δίκαια και λογικά μέτρα, όχι με μέτρα τα οποία ακυρώνουν όσα έχτισαν γενιές πολιτών και απειλούν τον κοινωνικό ιστό.

«Δυστυχώς, ο προϋπολογισμός της κυβέρνησης Abbott είναι η αφετηρία της μετάλλαξης της Αυστραλίας σε ψυχρό, ωμό, άδικο, στενοκέφαλο κράτος, που δεν θα αναγνωρίζουμε οι περισσότεροι. Είναι ο προϋπολογισμός που απειλεί να ισοπεδώσει τους τέσσερεις τους τέσσερεις πυλώνες της αυστραλιανής κοινωνίας, δηλαδή το ενιαίο Medicare, την ισότιμη παιδεία για όλους τους πολίτες, την παροχή αξιοπρεπούς σύνταξης και την απασχόληση όλων των πολιτών» δια διασαφήνισε ο κ. Shorten.
«Η οικονομική πολιτική της κυβέρνησης θεμελιώθηκε στο μύθο περί δήθεν «οικονομικής κρίσης», ο οποίος οδήγησε σε λανθασμένη ιεράρχηση των προτεραιοτήτων της. Η κυβέρνηση οργανώνει συνειδητή επίθεση στην υγεία και την παιδεία και εκβιάζει τις Πολιτείες να αυξήσουν το φόρο αγαθών και υπηρεσιών GST για να καλύψουν περικοπές 80 δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων -50 δις από την υγεία και 30 από την παιδεία- που ο θησαυροφύλακας έθαψε επιδέξια στα ψιλά γράμματα του προϋπολογισμού.
Το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν θα ψηφίσει αυτές τις περικοπές, διότι είμαστε, ιστορικά, το πολιτικό κόμμα που στηρίζει την ποιοτική παιδεία και υγεία για όλους τους Αυστραλούς πολίτες».

O κ. Shorten δεσμεύτηκε, ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν θα στηρίξει το χαράτσι των επτά δολαρίων που η κυβέρνηση ζητά να πληρώνουν οι ασθενείς για κάθε επίσκεψή τους στον οικογενειακό γιατρό τους, για ακτινογραφίες, για εξετάσεις αίματος κ.ά. Μήτε τη συμμετοχή των πολιτών στην αγορά των φαρμάκων που καλύπτονται από το εθνικό σύστημα φαρμακευτικής περίθαλψης.

«Η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση δεν θα ψηφίσει ένα μέτρο που στοχεύει την αποδόμηση του ενιαίου του Medicare και τη μετατροπή των γιατρών σε εισπράκτορες του κράτους. Στόχος της κυβέρνησης Abbott είναι να καταστρέψει την καθολικότητα του εθνικού συστήματος υγείας και να κάνει τους γιατρούς εισπράκτορες, υποχρεώνοντάς τους να εισπράττουν το χαράτσι από τους ασθενείς τους».
Η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση θα καταψηφίσει και τις περικοπές στην παιδεία. Ο κ Shorten σχολίασε, ότι οι περικοπές στην παιδεία που εξήγγειλε η κυβέρνηση «ακυρώνουν την παρακαταθήκη της κυβέρνησης Whitlam για την τριτοβάθμια εκπαίδευση, η οποία έδωσε σε 12 τουλάχιστον μέλη του υπουργικού συμβουλίου του κ. Abbott ίση ευκαιρία να αποκτήσουν πτυχίο πανεπιστημίου.

«Το Εργατικό Κόμμα σχεδίασε το σύστημα χρηματοδότησης της Παιδείας Gοnski -που η κυβέρνηση Abbott θα καταργήσει μετά από τέσσερα χρόνια- και δεν θα ψηφίσει τα μέτρα, που θα καταστήσουν την ανώτατη παιδεία απρόσιτη στα κατώτερα κοινωνικά στρώματα» τόνισε.
Αξιοσημείωτη είναι η εκτίμηση του «πατέρα» του ισχύοντος συστήματος πληρωμής διδάκτρων (HECS), καθηγητή του Εθνικού Πανεπιστημίου Αυστραλίας, Bruce Chapman, ότι «τα δίδακτρα γι τα ανώτατα εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα θα τριπλασιαστούν, αν περάσει το κυβερνητικό μέτρο για το καθορισμό των διδάκτρων από τα πανεπιστήμια». Πιο συντηρητικές εκτιμήσεις προβλέπουν αύξηση των διδάκτρων μεταξύ 20% και 50%, που θα εξομοιώσει τα δίδακτρα που θα πληρώνουν τα παιδιά μας με τα δίδακτρα που πληρώνουν αλλοδαποί φοιτητές.

Λαύρος και στην κριτική των επαχθών μέτρων για τους συνταξιούχους, που εξήγγειλε η κυβέρνηση. «Για τους Λίμπεραλς οι συνταξιούχοι είναι φορτίο. Δεν είναι οι πολίτες, που στο ξεκίνημα της εργασιακής ζωής τους το κράτος τους υποσχέθηκε μία σύνταξη, η οποία θα τους εξασφαλίζει μία αξιοπρεπή διαβίωση στα γεράματά τους. Η κυβέρνηση Abbott προτείνει μέτρα, τα οποία θα μειώσουν τη σύνταξη του πολίτη και θα υποβαθμίσουν το βιοτικό επίπεδό του. Το Εργατικό Κόμμα θα αγωνιστεί με όλες τις δυνάμεις και τα μέσα που διαθέτει για την προστασία της σύνταξης του πολίτη. Η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση θα καταψηφίσει τα κυβερνητικά μέτρα» υποσχέθηκε.
Ο κ. Shorten μήνυσε στην κυβέρνηση, ότι η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση διαφωνεί και με την αύξηση του ορίου ηλικίας στα 70 χρόνια για την παροχή σύνταξης γήρατος, από το 2035.

«Είμαι πρώην συνδικαλιστής και γνωρίζω πόσο δύσκολη γίνεται η εργασία μετά από κάποια ηλικία, ιδιαίτερα στα βαριά επαγγέλματα. Το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν θα ψηφίσει την αύξηση του ορίου ηλικίας» είπε.

Ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης κατήγγειλε και τα μέτρα για τους ανέργους κάτω των 30 ετών ως «άκαρδα», που θα βυθίσουν στη μιζέρια ανθρώπους που δεν ευθύνονται για τον εκτοπισμό τους από την παραγωγική διαδικασία.
«Η κυβέρνηση επιρρίπτει ευθύνες στα θύματα και αντί να σχεδιάσει πολιτική δημιουργίας νέων θέσεων απασχόλησης, σχεδίασε μέτρα τα οποία θα βυθίσουν χιλιάδες άνεργους στη φτώχεια και τη μιζέρια. Το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν πρόκειται να ψηφίσει τα μέτρα αυτά». Κάλεσε δε τον πρωθυπουργό να εξηγήσει, «πώς θα ζήσουν οι άνεργοι χωρίς κρατική βοήθησε επί έξι συνεχείς μήνες».

Το Εργατικό Κόμμα δεν πρόκειται να εγκαταλείψει και τις οικογένειες της Αυστραλίας, που θα πληγούν από τις αλλαγές που περιλαμβάνει ο προϋπολογισμός -κατάργηση και μείωση επιδομάτων και φορολογικών εκπτώσεων- ανακοίνωσε ο κ. Shorten.
Επικαλούμενος στοιχεία αξιολόγησης της επίδρασης των εξαγγελθέντων μέτρων σε μία μέση οικογένεια, που έκανε το Εθνικό Κέντρο Οικονομικού Σχεδιασμού, ο κ. Shorten υποστήριξε ότι ένα ζευγάρι με δύο ανήλικα παιδιά και ετήσιο εισόδημα $65,000 θα ζημιώσει φέτος $1,733, ενώ η ζημία του το 2016 θα ανέλθει σε $5,830, δηλαδή θα υπερτριπλασιαστεί.

Η αξιωματική αντιπολίτευση θα καταψηφίσει και την προτεινόμενη εξαμηνιαία αναπροσαρμογή της τιμής των υγρών καυσίμων στο κόστος ζωής, σημειώνοντας ότι η άνοδος της τιμής ων καυσίμων θα επιβαρύνει δυσανάλογα τον προϋπολογισμό των χαμηλόμισθων οικογενειών και των συνταξιούχων.
Ο κ. Shorten απέφυγε οποιαδήποτε αναφορά στο φόρο 2% (deficit levy) που θα επιβληθεί σε πολίτες με ετήσιο εισόδημα 180 χιλιάδες και άνω. Η σιωπή της αντιπολίτευσης ερμηνεύεται ως πρόθεσή της να στηρίξει το μέτρο. Ακόμη, ο κ. Shorten απέφυγε να δηλώσει, πώς μία Εργατική κυβέρνηση θα καλύψει το κόστος των έξτρα δαπανών για την υγεία και παιδεία.

Αναφέρθηκε, όμως, στον πολυπολιτισμό για να τονίσει, ότι «το Εργατικό Κόμμα εξακολουθεί να θεωρεί τον πολυπολιτισμό οικονομικά και κοινωνικά ωφέλιμη πολιτική». Η κυβέρνηση Abbott αγνοεί συστηματικά τον πολυπολιτισμό, κατά τα πρότυπα των πρώην Φιλελεύθερων κυβερνήσεων του John Howard.
Ο θησαυροφύλακας, Joe Hockey, χαρακτήρισε την απάντηση του αρχηγού της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης «πολιτική, τεκμήριο της αδυναμίας του Εργατικού Κόμματος να διαμορφώσει οικονομική πολιτική και της ανωριμότητάς του να κυβερνήσει».

Second Australian tour for the couple.

Nikos Kourkoulis and Kelly Kelekidou are back in Australia for a mid-winter tour. Playing three shows only, they will appear in early June in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Special guests on the tour will be Maria Stavropoulou and Nikita Ellenis.

The shows will take place on Friday 6 June at La Luna lounge in Sydney; Saturday 7 June at Stars International Reception Centre in Melbourne, and Sunday 8 June at Krystal Function Centre in Adelaide.

Legal and administrative framework needed before visa agreement comes into effect.

Young people from Greece and Australia are a step closer to having the opportunity to visit and work in each other’s countries, with the signing of a reciprocal Work and Holiday visa arrangement in Canberra on Wednesday.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), as the agreement is called, was signed by Australia’s Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Scott Morrison and by visiting Tourism Minister of Greece Olga Kefalogianni.

However, before it comes into effect the agreement between Australia and Greece needs to be ratified by the Greek Parliament. This is expected to happen within the next few months.

“This arrangement, when brought into effect, will enable up to 500 young adults from Greece and 500 young adults from Australia to enjoy a holiday in each other’s country, during which they may engage in short-term work and study,” Scott Morrison said, on behalf of the government of Australia.
According to Mr Morisson, if this arrangement which targets 18 to 30 years old people for a period of up to one year, proves to be a success, then, it might be expanded even further.

Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Senator Michaelia Cash, said over the coming months, both countries would be working closely together to implement the necessary legal and administrative processes to bring this visa into effect.

Olga Kefalogianni on her part acknowledged that the signing of the agreement is the end result of the consistent efforts of the Greek Australian community during the last two years, and went on to state that this memorandum will bring the two friendly countries even closer together.

The one-year Work and Holiday visa differs from a working holiday visa as it requires applicants to have the support of their government, hold or be studying towards tertiary qualifications and to speak functional English.

Other countries to have signed a reciprocal Work and Holiday (subclass 462) agreement with Australia include Poland, Argentina, Bangladesh, Chile, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, USA and Uruguay.
The Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, Fronditha Care, the Australian Greek Welfare Society, Labor federal MP Maria Vamvakinou, former Labor federal MP Steve Georganas, former minister of Immigration Chris Bowen who announced the initiative for the first time in August 2012, Neos Kosmos and others were some of the organisations and people involved in the campaign to sign this agreement.
The Melbourne Friendship Society of the Greek Communist Party denounced the signing of the M.O.U., saying that it will not help resolve the issue of youth unemployment.
The signing of the Work and Holiday visa agreement was part of a week-long visit to Australia of the Minister of Tourism of Greece Olga Kefalogiannis.
Ms Kefalogianni was in Melbourne on Tuesday, where she attended a working breakfast hosted by the Hellenic Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HACCI), and met tour operators and the Premier of Victoria Dr Denis Napthine at the Hellenic Museum. The Minister of Tourism also met with the leadership of the Victorian parliaments and Greek Australian state MPs as well as representatives of the Board of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria and the leadership of the Cretan Community.

It is worth noting that at the HACCI breakfast in Melbourne Ms Kefalogianni when asked about the issue of signing a double taxation agreement with Australia in order to avoid paying taxes in both countries, responded by saying that the Greek government is ready to deal with the issue and it is awaiting for an Australian response.

Australia has double taxation agreements with dozens of countries, including Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, UK, USA and others.

While in Canberra Ms Kefalogianni met with Greek Australian federal MPs and Senators, attended a function at the Greek Embassy and visited the Hellenic Club.

The Australian trip of the Greek Minister of Tourism closed with a visit to Sydney where Ms Kefalogianni met with tour operators, Archbishop Stylianos, Deputy Premier of New South Wales and Tourism Minister Andrew Stoner and the Lord Mayor of Sydney Ms Clover Moor.

In all of her meetings Olga Kefalogianni highlighted the advantages and the commercial incentives of Greece as a tourist destination for Australians throughout the year and stressed the investment opportunities that now exist in her country.

It’s not good to have a family, be sick, young or poor. That’s the verdict many Australian mastheads have come to after Treasurer Joe Hockey delivered his first Federal Budget this week.

For the Greek Australian community, pensioners and the young will be the biggest affected, while families will have payments cut if they reach a certain threshold. All will now have to pay $7 to see the doctor, fuel will rise twice a year by 2-3 cents and going to university will cost more as universities are given free rein over charging what they like for courses.

Named as one of the toughest budgets since 1997, the Coalition has chosen to raise taxes and cut funding to fix the country’s billion dollar deficit, but hasn’t distributed the heavy lifting equally.

Those earning more than $180,000 will have a temporary tax of just 2 per cent for three years, while the unemployed under 30 will be on a compulsory waiting list for six months to receive benefits, and will be given no assistance if they don’t participate in the work for the dole scheme for 25 hours a week.
Pensioners will lose $876.20 or $1320.80 per couple when their seniors supplement gets scrapped from July, and the pension will be scaled back, as it will be decided with a twice yearly indexation linked to inflation instead of wages growth from 2017.

People will also be forced to work till 70 by 2035 as the pension age limit rises again.

The Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) says its biggest clientèle is aged Greek Australians, and the added pressure from the budget won’t be welcome.

“Our biggest concern is for pensioners, who we believe are disproportionately unfairly hit by the budget measures,” AGWS CEO Voula Messimeri tells Neos Kosmos.
“CPI increases are usually lower than wage growth, so that’s a really huge blow for pensions.
“Another thing that is going to really impact negatively is the Medicare patient contribution.
“This is a really regressive step.”
It’s something Fair Go for Pensioners committee member Theo Nomikos did not want to accept.
“They’re punishing us, they’ve done nothing for pensioners, all they’re doing is chopping off [benefits],” he tells Neos Kosmos.
One of the positive measures the Budget has introduced for older Australians is a $10,000 incentive for businesses that hire older people out of work for six months.
Yet Mr Nomikos isn’t very happy with the incentive, as he believes it takes jobs away from the younger generation desperate to get into the workforce.
“They are taking unemployment benefits while we are working to pay for those benefits,” he says.

“Why don’t we give them the job and they work until they get the pension at 60 or 65?”

Now the young will be told to “earn or learn”, with some of the harshest policy hitting the unemployed under 30. They won’t receive any benefits for six months when they apply for the dole.

That is something AGWS says will be catastrophic for our community’s young.

“Essentially we’ve seen measures enforced on young people as if they deliberately stay on income support,” Ms Messimeri says.

“What is being asked with these types of measures is that families take up the slack again with a bigger burden put on parents.
“For younger people that don’t have that support I think there’s a real risk in their mental health and the vulnerability of becoming homeless.”
The young will also face higher university fees, with the government giving the green light for universities to set their own course fees. Government funded places will still exist, but students need to pay their way earlier and get slugged with a 6 per cent interest rate when they start earning more than $50,000.
The changes have 22-year-old politics student Sam Sofos worried.

“I am disappointed in the model we’re heading for, it’s more of an Americanised deregulation. It’s really bleak,” he tells Neos Kosmos.
“Those from a lower socio-economic background won’t be persuaded to seek higher education if it’s too expensive.”

For law student Yianni Kallianis, he says he’s lucky that he’ll be finishing up this year, and won’t be having to pay a university regulated fee on top of his HECS debt.

“It’s concerning because university fees now aren’t cheap, but because – especially in the law industry – there’s a real over supply of graduates. In that sense, if it is deregulated, prices will be driven up and fewer students will be doing it.”

The budget’s changes will be causing excess strain for community groups that are already buckling under demand.

For AGWS, volunteers and staff are already scratching their heads over how they will cope with a bigger backlog thanks to the budget when they are already catering to the needs of new migrants and an ageing population.

“We’re doing it really tough and we’re not able to respond to what the community wants, expects and needs,” Ms Messimeri says.

“This budget is not helping and this budget does not really have a strategy for a huge ageing population.”

Most of the budget will be coming into effect at the start of the new financial year in July, but could be met with strong opposition in the Senate.
“It will be interesting to see how the composition of the Senate after 1 July 2014 will affect the government’s ability to pass its budget measures into law,” HACCI writes to Neos Kosmos.

“We believe this will not be the first word (nor the last) on budget repair.”
