A memorial marking a historic battle involving Australian and New Zealand forces in Crete in May 1941 will be unveiled next week at the official Battle of Crete commemorations by Australia’s Ambassador to Greece.

Ambassador Jenny Bloomfield and Ms Glenda Humes – the eldest daughter of Aboriginal Battle of Crete veteran Reg Saunders – will present the specially-commissioned plaque to the Municipality of Chania on 21 May in the village of Tsikalaria, close to the 1941 battle site.

The 80kg ’42nd Street’ plaque – made of solid bronze and measuring one metre square – depicts a vital action by Australian and New Zealand forces in the last days of the Battle of Crete.

The action at 42nd Street on 27 May 1941 was one of the last major actions during the battle for Crete which pushed the Germans into retreat – buying precious time for Allied troops to be evacuated. The site has never previously been marked.

42nd Street was the name given by Allied soldiers to the country lane running south east of Chania towards Tsikalaria. Today it is known as Tsikalarion.
The presentation – as part of the official 73rd Battle of Crete anniversary commemorations – brings full circle three years of research, planning and fundraising.

The plaque has been largely paid for by donations from the Greek community in Australia. Etihad Airways and Aegean Airlines sponsored the air freight of the plaque from Melbourne to Chania.

The plaque’s organisers are The Friends of 42nd Street Trust – a not-for-profit organisation established three years ago by the daughters of Captain Reg Saunders MBE (1920-1990). Glenda Humes is the president of the Trust. Other members of the organisation’s committee include sisters Dorothy and Judith, and Pancretan Association of Melbourne vice-president John Rerakis.

After Crete, Reg Saunders, who was a member of the Australian 2/7 Battalion, became the first Aboriginal Australian to be made an officer in the Australian army.

Ms Humes, who will be in Crete for the plaque’s presentation, told Neos Kosmos that the event was the culmination of efforts and much generosity from the Greek Australian community, and the project’s many supporters in Australia, New Zealand and Greece.

“We’re very excited to be able to bring this plaque as a gift to the people of Crete, to mark a location which is a vital part of Australia, Greece and New Zealand’s entwined history,” she said.

“The Cretan people looked after my father after the Battle of Crete – along with hundreds of other Australian and New Zealand soldiers – and we are forever grateful to the Cretan people who sacrificed so much during WWII.”

Meanwhile Ambassador Jenny Bloomfield told Neos Kosmos that she was delighted to be able to attend the plaque’s presentation at this year’s Battle of Crete commemorations.

“I congratulate The Friends of 42nd Street Trust for this initiative, which has been strongly supported by the Australian Embassy in Athens. Of all the events in the shared history between Australia and Greece, the Battle of Crete is the most significant,” said the ambassador.

“Australians have never forgotten the resilience, the self-sacrifice, but also the mateship and compassion of the people of Crete. The events of those dark days forged a strong bond between our two nations and are part of the personal stories of many Australians – such as the Saunders/Humes family, and many others.

“As we mark the 73rd anniversary of the Battle, we would like to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives, and to express our heartfelt thanks to the people of Crete. Australians will never forget you.”

The 42nd Street event is one of the last major events Ambassador Bloomfield will attend in Greece, with her three year posting coming to an end in six weeks.

The plaque – which Neos Kosmos understands will be officially received by the Mayor of Chania Mr Manolis Skoulakis – comprises English, Greek and Maori texts and sculpted illustrations to tell the story of the 42nd Street battle and its consequences. The bronze has been produced by Melbourne plaque-maker Dr Ross Bastiaan AM.

Joining Glenda Humes and Ambassador Bloomfield for the presentation will be many Anzac veterans’ families, including descendants of the Maori troops who took part in the battle. The NZ 28 (Maori) Battalion – with the Australian 2/7 Battalion – were the first units to repulse the German advance to the west of 42nd Street on the morning of 27 May 41.

Their actions – a brutal bayonet charge against newly arrived German reinforcements – were spurred on by one Maori soldier performing a haka, the ancient war dance of the Maori people, as the fighting began.

The charge resulted in the death of some 200 enemy soldiers, with the Anzacs losing around 35 men killed. A number of the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who took part in the charge became the fighting rearguard of the Allied troops in western Crete – protecting those heading to the evacuation point at Sfakia.
Organisations in Australia which donated to the 42nd Street project include The Pancretan Association of Melbourne, The Cretan Association of Sydney and New South Wales, The Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, and The Australian Hellenic Council. The Andriotakis family of Sydney were also major donors.

The Municipality of Chania is finalising arrangements with the organisers over the location of the memorial site to be inaugurated later this year.

The Hellenic Coast Guard is intensifying its crackdown on people-smuggling rackets in the Aegean ahead of what is expected to be a difficult summer.

The Hellenic Coast Guard is intensifying its crackdown on people-smuggling rackets in the Aegean ahead of what is expected to be a difficult summer when it is feared that large numbers of would-be migrants will attempt the crossing from neighboring Turkey.

Following a three-day investigation, coast guard sources said on Tuesday that they had traced three suspected smugglers who are believed to have organized the transfer last Friday of a group of migrants from Turkey to Rhodes, in the Dodecanese. The attempted crossing was thwarted by Greek coast guard officers who subsequently launched a search for the smugglers.

Officers intercepted 13 migrants off the coast of Chios on Tuesday after stopping two boatloads of immigrants off Samos and Kos last week. Those came at the end of a busy month with 51 cases of attempted people-smuggling recorded by the coast guard in April. In 31 of these cases, the smuggling vessels were spotted while still in Turkish waters and in several instances the migrants were rescued by Greek authorities before being handed over to their Turkish counterparts.

The Greek coast guard wants to foster a closer cooperation with its Turkish equivalent, which is often accused of failing to honor a bilateral repatriation treaty with Greece.

Expecting a larger influx of migrants from Syria and other strife-torn countries in the coming months, authorities on Lesvos are planning to open a second reception center.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is behaving like a coward by cancelling his visit to a university amid nationwide protests, a student union says.

Mr Abbott and his Education Minister Christopher Pyne were due to visit a Geelong research facility at Deakin University on Wednesday, but called it off after federal police raised concerns about their personal safety.

The visit was to have coincided with a national day of student protests against the government’s higher education reforms, including removing caps on fees universities can charge.National Union of Students president Deanna Taylor said Mr Abbott must explain why he’s worried about facing students and answering their questions.

‘I think the prime minister and his ministers are being a bit cowardly and trying to portray students as though they’re violent rabble-rousers who are out to cause trouble, which isn’t the case at all,’ she told AAP.

‘They’re trying to make us sound like spoiled little brats who don’t know how good we’ve got it. They have a very clear agenda.

‘Ms Taylor said an expected 2000-strong rally in Melbourne would be the nation’s biggest, but thousands more would rally across the country in all capital cities except Darwin.She said government plans to deregulate fees would burden students with debt for 30-40 years and hinder them from buying a house or car.’We shouldn’t basically be penalising people for getting a higher education,’ she said.

In the past week, protesters at Sydney and Melbourne universities have come under fire for heckling Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and former federal Liberal MP Sophie Mirabella.

But Ms Taylor says students are so incensed by the proposed changes they are doing what they can to get their point across.

‘Not all students have access to the corridors of power and can’t go and lobby politicians,’ she said.’For a lot of students who are disenfranchised, protesting and demonstrating is really their only way of voicing their discontent.

‘Mr Pyne said it was the prime minister’s decision, in conjunction with his office, to call off the Geelong visit after receiving the police brief.'(He thought) it would be wiser to not go and create that tumult at Deakin so students can get on with their studies unmolested by the Socialist Alternative, which seem quite intent on shutting down democracy in Australia,’ Mr Pyne told the ABC.Socialist Alternative is a far-left wing organisation that publishes the Red Flag paper.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine is still expected to visit the university.

Global warming may not be so bad for sea turtles — at least, not at first. One of the quirks of sea turtles, along with many other reptiles, is that temperature determines the sex of their offspring.

At around 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) the ratio of males to females is fairly even, but as temperature rises, more and more hatchlings end up as females. Researchers from Swansea University in Wales calculated how that will change for one major population of sea turtles as the globe warms over the next century, and while they found that it would mean a growing population at first, eventually there will be too few males around.

Their research, which is being published today in Nature Climate Change, was focused on a population of loggerhead turtles in Sal, Cape Verde, an island to the west of Northern Africa. For the past 150 years, the temperature there has put the number of female hatchlings laid on light-sand beaches between roughly 50 and 70 percent of those born. Right now, the population of Sal is beginning to see a distinct uptick in the number of females, and the researchers believe that will steadily increase to around 80 percent of hatchlings on light-sand beaches in 2050 to about 98 percent by 2100.

“The possibility of sea turtles becoming extinct is not a far-fetched scenario,” Graeme Hays, Swansea’s aquatic biology chair, says in a statement. Even though the sex ratio will tip heavily toward females at Sal in the near future, male turtles’ tendency to mate more often means that the population should be able to continue growing for a while. But eventually, the researchers say that human intervention will likely be necessary to cool the turtles’ nests to ensure that males are brought into the population.

“Eventually a point will be reached when there are insufficient males to fertilize all eggs,” they write. “Ultimately if males are so scarce that egg fertility is compromised, management intervention will be needed. Translocating nests from dark beaches to [cooler] light beaches could be a strategy to produce more male hatchlings. Another strategy would be to shade nests (for example, with beach vegetation) to lower incubation temperatures.”

Though the paper only focuses on Sal, the researchers say that it can be repeated just about anywhere — and may need to be in order to monitor the safety of populations. The researchers also warn that warming isn’t likely to be the only big impact on sea turtles over the next century: in particular, rising sea levels could lead to the destruction of the beaches where they mate. Still, the researchers’ estimates show a striking example of how changing climates can impact a population. For these loggerhead turtles, it’s perhaps for the better at first, but only for so long.

Australia are on the way to Brazil as the lowest ranked nation but one of the highest paid.

The 2014 World Cup is rapidly approaching but the big dollar earnings days are about to end for Australia’s Socceroos as Football Federation Australia examines the team’s ailing financial situation.

FFA boss David Gallop warned Tuesday of cuts to player match fees ahead of what is to be the third consecutive World Cup appearance for the Socceroos.

The highly paid, fresh faced Socceroos squad face South Africa at ANZ Stadium early next week for a final international friendly before heading off to Brazil where the inexperienced squad is expected to come up against a tough time against Spain, the Netherlands and Chile in the group stage.

Players are currently paid $6,500 for each international cap and combined with prize money will see the squad take home some $2.6 million regardless of their performance, making them one of the highest paid teams in Brazil despite a tournament-low FIFA ranking. A group stage knockout would see each player still earn $150,000 for fewer than five hours on the pitch.

Gallop intends to restructure player pay so that it better reflects the overall earning potential of each Socceroos’ outing according to the AAP..

“It’s a product of where we were at that time but the next four-year cycle, I think we can come up with a more reasonable system,” Gallop said Tuesday of the lucrative deal the players received last time contract’s were negotiated.

“We need to look at the tiers of games we’re involved in.

“When we’re playing top-class opposition and there’s a big opportunity to make gate receipts, then the pay can be at one level.

“But when the Socceroos play in lesser games in the next four-year cycle then, as we did last year with the EAFF (East Asian Football Federation) tournament, we need to be looking at appropriate remuneration for those games.”

The Socceroos face a more immediate problem heading into the World Cup- a lack of a major sponsor.

Qantas pulled their backing last year and the hope is a big-time will jump on board a month out from the tournament kick off.

“It’s a bit of a concern,” Gallop told the AAP.

“These four weeks are an important few weeks.

“It’s not very often that we pull these guys in from every corner of the globe and get this intense opportunity to spend time with them.

One councillor’s quest to completely ban smoking in Melbourne.

Smokers in the city of Melbourne as well as the Victorian Premier Denis Napthine have rubbished one City of Melbourne councillor’s push to make Melbourne’s CBD completely smoke free.

If the ban goes ahead, it’s believed Melbourne would be the first CBD that has a smoke-ban. The ban, motioned by Melbourne City councillor Richard Foster, needs the support of six of eleven councillors, with Cr Foster telling the Herald Sun that he was confident he had majority support.

And the councillor has the support of Nicole Papasavas, restaurant manager of Stalactites on Lonsdale Street, who says the ban is a positive thing that she supports.

“It creates a nice atmosphere, it’s a lot cleaner and encourages good health,” Ms Papasavas tells Neos Kosmos of smoke-free environments.
The non-smoker says the last thing she wants is a “face full of smoke” when she’s dining in Melbourne’s CBD.

“I would rather it be a non-smoking environment at all cafes and restaurants in Melbourne’s CBD,” she says.

When asked if the smoking ban could potentially harm her business, she was certain it wouldn’t.

“I don’t believe the ban will affect us at all, I think people have accepted the non-smoking policy that’s been around for a quite a number of years now so it’s not something that would affect our business necessarily.”

If the ban goes ahead, smoking would be illegal for pedestrians, footpath diners and even building site workers anywhere in the Hoddle grid bounded by Flinders St, Spencer St, Spring St and the Queen Victoria Market. There would be designated smoking shelters in the CBD for smokers to gather.

Readers took to social media to voice their concern over the proposed ban. Mary Day agrees with the ban and says: “I think it’s an innovative idea and Melbourne would set the trend for the rest of the world. Let’s be real about this, no one smokes forever (unless they die from a smoking related disease).”

Toula Apostolopoulos says she doesn’t agree with the ban and says they should look at banning drugs and drunks in Melbourne’s CBD before smoking.
Soulz Hronis agrees with the smoking ban but says the same should go for drugs, alcohol, buses, and four-wheel drives, stating “it’s an absolute joke a mother of one or two kids to be driving such a vehicle, even on her own to work, not only dangerous but if we are so concerned of the environment many issues to consider.”

Peter/Sarah Bakoulas is concerned that there are too many restrictions on the people of Melbourne, with Di Drew saying it is “an act of class war”.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has cancelled a visit to Deakin University’s Geelong campus with Victorian Premier Denis Napthine on Wednesday, an event protesters were targeting.

A collection of different community groups had planned to protest against Mr Abbott and his first budget that has cut billions from the state budget and made dramatic changes to cost-of-living.

Extra security had been arranged for the event at the Waurn Ponds campus in the wake of a series of anti-government protests and backlash against the budget in the city.

Students at universities across Australia have targeted prominent Liberal figures who have appeared on campus since the federal budget was handed down last week.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop was attacked at Sydney University on Friday and heckled later that day at an event at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Former frontbencher Sophie Mirabella was also shouted down during a lecture at the University of Melbourne on Monday.

It is understood Mr Abbott and Dr Napthine are still scheduled to see each other on Tuesday night in Melbourne.

Dr Napthine has been critical of the federal budget and has called for an urgent meeting of all government leaders.

Victoria is facing up to a $20 billion cut to health and education funding over the next ten years with changes to national partnership funding set to impacting Victoria from July 1.

On Tuedsay afternoon Mr Abbott’s office cancelled an event with Deakin University that was to celebrate the work of Carbon Nexus, which had received some federal funds in the past.

The event had been confirmed by the Prime Minister’s office earlier in the day.

A federal source said the decision to cancel the visit to Geelong had nothing to do with what has been an at-times frosty relationship between Mr Abbott and Dr Napthine in recent months.

Dr Napthine has been angered by Canberra’s decision to allow Holden and Toyota to pull out of manufacturing operations in Australia, as well as at the refusal to assist fruit processor SPC.

Mr Abbott will still attend an event in Victoria on Wednesday as he continues to sell what has been a horror first budget for the Coalition, delivering a big hit in the Prime Minister’s popularity in Victoria in the Fairfax Nielsen polls.

Mr Abbott last week conceded “there was some things in the Budget that the premiers liked – there were other things in the Budget that the premiers would prefer weren’t there”  but has stressed the federal government would still look to work constructively with the states.

However, Mr Abbott refused to meet with state premiers collectively over the weekend in Sydney to discuss the fall out from the budget.

With Mr Abbott’s popularity in Victoria the lowest in the country, Monday’s Age/Nielsen poll showed the Coalition trailing 61-39 in the state, questions have also been raised about whether it is good for Dr Napthine to be seen with Mr Abbott, especially in a marginal seat, ahead of the November state poll.

Geelong Trades Hall secretary Tim Gooden said a community protest had been organised, including representatives from unions, students, the Greens, ALP, people from Men’s Sheds, pensioners and disability groups.

Earlier the university would not comment on whether there would be a strong security presence at the Waurn Ponds campus, but Victoria police are aware of protests and said there would be ‘‘adequate police’’ there to ensure safety.

On Tuesday Dr Napthine said he did not back a broadening or increase to the GST. He also said he had received a letter from the PM conceding that there were budget impacts that would affect Victoria from July 1, with the state up to $200 million worse.

Ο Ρος Μακρής, πρώτος από τα τέσσερα παιδιά του Κώστα, άρχισε να εργάζεται με τον πατέρα του το 1987 και ίδρυσε την εταιρία Precision Investment Corporation σαν δικό του όχημα επενδύσεων το 1995, σε ηλικία 25 ετών. Αυτή τη στιγμή η περιουσία των δύο αντρών, σύμφωνα με το οικονομικό περιοδικό «BRW» που δημοσιεύει τους σχετικούς καταλόγους, ξεπερνά το 1,5 δισ. δολάρια και τους καθιστά τους μοναδικούς δισεκατομμυριούχους ομογενείς στην Αυστραλία.

Όπως σημειώνεται στο προφίλ της εταιρίας, ο όμιλος Μακρή περιλαμβάνει εμπορικά κέντρα στην Αδελαΐδα, στο Σίδνεϊ και στη Μελβούρνη καθώς επίσης και αμέτρητα άλλα ακίνητα. Στο τελευταίο απόκτημα του ομίλου, το Oracle, ενσωματώνονται δύο σύγχρονοι ουρανοξύστες, που αποτελούν σήμα κατατεθέν της Χρυσής Ακτής, της πιο κοσμοπολίτικης τουριστικής περιοχής της Αυστραλίας, ενώ η αντικειμενική αξία τους αγγίζει τα 350.000.000 δολάρια. Στη δική του περίπτωση βεβαίως το άλλο του μισό δεν διαθέτει μόνο εξυπνάδα αλλά και ξεχωριστή ομορφιά. Η εντυπωσιακή εμφάνιση και οι τέλειες αναλογίες της Ολίβια τής χάρισαν τον τίτλο της Μις Αυστραλία 2003, βάζοντάς την μια για πάντα στο «πάνθεον» των ωραιότερων γυναικών της χώρας της.

Εκτός από πρώην εστεμμένη, η 32χρονη καλλονή έχει διαγράψει επιτυχημένη πορεία στα μίντια, ως παρουσιάστρια, ενώ κατέχει και μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο στη γαστρονομία με εμπειρία 10 και πλέον ετών στον χώρο του φαγητού και του κρασιού. Επιπλέον, η κυρία Μακρή μπορεί να καυχιέται ότι έχει δειπνήσει σε μερικά από τα πιο ονομαστά ρεστοράν του κόσμου και έχει γράψει κριτικές για κορυφαίους χώρους εστίασης και οινοποιητικές μονάδες στην Αυστραλία και την Ευρώπη. Ανάμεσα στα πιο αξιοσημείωτα γαστρονομικά επιτεύγματά της θεωρείται η ίδρυση του πρώτου φεστιβάλ κρασιού της νότιας Αυστραλίας το 2011, στο οποίο συμμετείχαν περισσότεροι από 100 οινοποιοί.

Στην τηλεόραση η όμορφη Ολίβια έχει παρουσιάσει και έχει λάβει μέρος σε διάφορες ταξιδιωτικές εκπομπές και εκπομπές γαστρονομίας, με πιο χαρακτηριστική την εμφάνισή της στην ταξιδιωτική σειρά «Bon Voyage», η οποία προβάλλεται σε 25 ασιατικές χώρες. Τέλος, έχει καταφέρει να πάρει συνεντεύξεις από μερικές από τις πιο ποθητές γυναίκες του πλανήτη, όπως το τοπ μόντελ Μιράντα Κερ, η πρώην τραγουδίστρια των Black Eyed Peas Φέργκι, η βασίλισσα του νεο-μπουρλέσκ, Ντίτα Φον Τιζ, από γνωστούς πολιτικούς, μύθους της γαστρονομίας, καθώς επίσης και από το «πιο πρόστυχο κορίτσι της βιομηχανίας του πορνό», τη Bella Donna.

Ο Ρος Μακρής φέρει όνομα «βαρύ» στον χώρο των επιχειρήσεων, καθώς είναι γιος του δισεκατομμυριούχου ομογενούς Κώστα Μακρή ή «Con Makris», όπως τον αποκαλούν στη μακρινή ήπειρο. Η ζωή του αυτοδημιούργητου κροίσου από το Λυγουριό Επιδαύρου και πρώην προέδρου της Παναχαϊκής θα μπορούσε να εμπνεύσει τη συγγραφή σεναρίου για το Χόλιγουντ, αφού από την απόλυτη ένδεια κατόρθωσε να κατέχει τεράστιο πλούτο.
Όπως έχει παραδεχτεί ο ίδιος, ξεκίνησε από το χωριό του το 1963, σε ηλικία 16 ετών, και έφτασε στη χώρα των ευκαιριών, την Αυστραλία, έχοντας στις αποσκευές του, εκτός από τα λιγοστά προσωπικά του αντικείμενα, την ελπίδα για μια καλύτερη ζωή. Άρχισε να εργάζεται σε χυτήρια και, όταν μάζεψε τα πρώτα χρήματα, αγόρασε μια αλυσίδα μαγαζιών fast food.

Στη συνέχεια άλλαξε πορεία και από το χώρο της εστίασης στράφηκε στον κλάδο των ακινήτων. Η έμπνευσή του αποδείχτηκε «χρυσοφόρος», καθώς με τα χρόνια και με πολλή δουλειά κατόρθωσε να φτάσει στην οικονομική κορυφή. Την πρώτη αγορά εμπορικού κέντρου έκανε το 1987 και σήμερα κατέχει μια αυτοκρατορία στο χώρο των ακινήτων.

Ανάμεσα στα πολλά «αποκτήματά» του βρισκόταν κάποτε και η Παναχαϊκή, όμως αποφάσισε να παραχωρήσει το πλειοψηφικό πακέτο στον δικηγόρο Αλέξη Κούγια. Η Ελλάδα παραμένει μία από τις μεγάλες αγάπες του και την απολαμβάνει σε κάθε ευκαιρία ταξιδεύοντας με το πολυτελές σκάφος του, το «Ouzo Palace».

ΓΑΜΟΣ ΧΛΙΔΗ ΣΤΗ ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ

Ο γάμος της 32χρονης καλλονής και του «χρυσού αγοριού» από την Αδελαΐδα τελέστηκε στις 22 Δεκεμβρίου 2013, με τα αυστραλιανά μίντια να χαρακτηρίζουν την ένωση του ζευγαριού το «κοσμικό γεγονός της χρονιάς». Η γαμήλια τελετή, η οποία διακρινόταν από διάχυτη πολυτέλεια, έγινε σε στενό κύκλο στη Νέα Υόρκη -που είναι και ένας από τους αγαπημένους προορισμούς των δυο τους-, ενώ ο μήνας του μέλιτος ήταν κατά τι μεγαλύτερος, αφού διήρκεσε έξι ολόκληρες εβδομάδες!

Όπως σημείωναν τα τοπικά μέσα ενημέρωσης, η 32χρονη νύφη έλαμπε μέσα στο εντυπωσιακό νυφικό που έφερε την υπογραφή του Paolo Sebastian, ενώ ο γαμπρός φορούσε μαύρο σμόκιν με παπιγιόν. «Οι καμπάνες αντήχησαν σε όλη την περιοχή καθώς διασχίζαμε το διάδρομο της εκκλησίας» δήλωνε περιχαρής τότε η κυρία Μακρή, συμπληρώνοντας: «Για το «κάτι μπλε», ο Ρος έραψε σε μια κρυφή ραφή του νυφικού μου μια μπλε κλωστή. Η Νέα Υόρκη, δε, ήταν πανέμορφη»! Το ζευγάρι γνωρίστηκε το 2010 και σχεδίαζε να παντρευτεί στην Αυστραλία, ωστόσο τελικά επέλεξε να κάνει το γάμο του στην Αμερική. Το ζευγάρι έρανε με ροδοπέταλα η επτάχρονη κόρη του γαμπρού.

Εκατοντάδες φίλοι και υποστηρικτές της ομογενούς γερουσιαστή και σκιώδους υπουργού, Τζένης Μικάκου, παρευρέθηκαν στην εκδήλωση στο Moonlight Receptions, για την ενίσχυση της προεκλογικής εκστρατείας της δημοφιλούς Τζένης.

Την εκδήλωση τίμησε με την παρουσία του ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης, Daniel Andrews, συνάδελφοι και συνυποψήφιοι της κ. Μικάκου στις πολιτειακές εκλογές του Νοεμβρίου.

Η αθρόα προσέλευση πιστοποίησε τη δημοτικότητα της σκιώδους υπουργού και τις στενές σχέσεις της με την ομογένεια, πράγματα που επισήμανε στην ομιλία του ο αρχηγός της αξιωματικής αντιπολίτευσης.

Ο κ. Andrews διαβεβαίωσε τον ελληνισμό της Μελβούρνης, ότι το Εργατικό Κόμμα εκτιμά την προσφορά των Ελλήνων για την πολιτισμική οικονομική και πολιτική ανάπτυξη της Πολιτείας και προσβλέπει στη διατήρηση και ενδυνάμωση των πολύχρονων δεσμών προς όφελος της ελληνικής παροικίας και της ευρύτερης κοινωνίας.

Φανερά συγκινημένη, η Τζένη Μικάκου από την παρουσία παλαιών και νέων φίλων και υποστηρικτών της, δεσμεύτηκε να συνεχίσει τους αγώνες της εντός και εκτός του πολιτειακού κοινοβουλίου για τα συμφέροντα του Ελληνισμού και της Πολιτείας.

Μετά το πάγωμα των συντάξεων και τα χαράτσια.

Χιλιάδες συνταξιούχοι θα λάβουν μέρος στη δημόσια διαμαρτυρία, μεθαύριο Τετάρτη στο κέντρο της Μελβούρνης, κατά των περικοπών που ανακοίνωσε η κυβέρνηση Abbott, οι οποίες θα μειώσουν σημαντικά τις συντάξεις και θα υποβαθμίσουν το βιοτικό επίπεδο χιλιάδων συνταξιούχων.

Σύμφωνα με τα μέτρα που περιλαμβάνει ο πρώτος προϋπολογισμός του Joe Hockey, χιλιάδες συνταξιούχοι, που λαμβάνουν μειωμένη σύνταξη, θα τη χάσουν μετά το 2017, διότι θα μειωθεί το ετήσιο εισόδημα που θα επιτρέπεται να κερδίζουν από άλλες πηγές. Σημαντική θα είναι η χρηματική απώλεια χιλιάδων συνταξιούχων από την ανακοινωθείσα προσαρμογή της σύνταξης στο κόστος ζωής, αντί του υψηλότερου ανδρικού βασικού μισθού.

Σήμερα πολλά ζευγάρια συνταξιούχων, με εισόδημα έως και $77.600 τον χρόνο από άλλες πηγές, δικαιούνται να λαμβάνουν και κάποιο μικρό ποσό επιδόματος γήρατος από το κράτος, ενώ, παράλληλα, τους χορηγείται και η κάρτα Ηealth Care, που τους παρέχει εκπτώσεις στα φάρμακά τους, στους λογαριασμούς ρεύματος και γκαζιού, αλλά και στις επισκέψεις τους στο γιατρό. Η κυβέρνηση Άμποτ, όμως, ανακοίνωσε, ότι το ποσόν αυτό θα μειωθεί από το 2017 στις $50,000 ετησίως, που σημαίνει ότι μεγάλος αριθμός συνταξιούχων θα χάσει όχι μόνο το επίδομα γήρατος αλλά και όλες τις άλλες παροχές που τους προσφέρει η κάρτα Health Care.

To ανάλογο εισόδημα, που επιτρέπεται να κερδίζουν σήμερα από άλλες πηγές άγαμοι/άγαμες ή χήροι/χήρες συνταξιούχοι πριν χάσουν το δικαίωμα παροχής σύνταξης από το κράτος είναι $46.600, και αυτό το ποσόν θα μειωθεί στις $30,000 μετά το 2017.

Η απόφαση της κυβέρνησης να μειώσει το επιτρεπόμενο ετήσιο εισόδημα από άλλες πηγές για τους συνταξιούχους της χώρας σε συνδυασμό με το γεγονός, ότι θα πρέπει να πληρώνουν και αυτοί $7 για κάθε τους επίσκεψη στον γιατρό, με εξαίρεση τους κατόχους κάρτας έκπτωσης (concession card) θα πληρώνουν μόνον για τις πρώτες δέκα επισκέψεις στον οικογενειακό γιατρό τους, αναμένεται να έχει τραγικό αντίκτυπο σε πολλούς ηλικιωμένους μας. Επίσης, οι συνταξιούχοι θα επηρεαστούν και αυτοί από την αυτόματη εξαμηνιαία αναπροσαρμογή του φόρου καυσίμων στο κόστος ζωής.

Ήδη, οι συνταξιούχοι της χώρας έχουν αρχίσει να ανησυχούν για το μέλλον τους και οργανώνουν κινητοποιήσεις. Μεθαύριο, Τετάρτη, 21 Μαΐου 2014, στις 10.00πμ, η Ομοσπονδία Ελληνικών Συλλόγων Ηλικιωμένων Βικτώριας διοργανώνει συγκέντρωση διαμαρτυρίας στα σκαλοπάτια της Βικτωριανής Βιβλιοθήκης (State Library), 328 Swanston Street, Melbourne, απευθύνοντας έκκληση προς όλους τους ομογενειακούς φορείς και σε ολόκληρη την ελληνική παροικία να στηρίξουν την προσπάθειά της για την υλοποίηση των αιτημάτων της.

Το συλλαλητήριο οργανώνεται σε συνεργασία με την Επιτροπή Fair Go For Pensioners, η οποία δημιουργήθηκε από την Ομοσπονδία Ελληνικών Συλλόγων Ηλικιωμένων.
