Vocalist Maria Farantouri, will be giving a talk on her ongoing determination to make a difference for her country through music and culture, at the Wheeler Centre next Saturday. This coincides with her visit to Australia with saxophonist Charles Lloyd as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and presented by The Greek Centre for Contemporary Culture.
The talk to be held on Saturday 31 May in Greek, will be hosted by journalist Dina Gerolymou.
The unmissable event ‘The Greek Project’, will take place on Sunday 1 June at the Melbourne Town Hall, 100 Swanston Street, Melbourne.
Farantouri’s voice has been described as “a present from the gods of Olympus”. And over the past half century, saxophonist Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most influential and inventive musicians in jazz history.
This critically-acclaimed project – also featuring lyra master Socratis Sinopoulos and pianist Takis Farazis – explores the subtle connections between jazz and traditional Greek music to create hauntingly beautiful new sounds.
